North Central Coordinator Announced – During the 2006-2007 academic year, Eastern will undergo a site visit for reaffirmation of accreditation by the Higher Learning Commission (North Central Association). It is my pleasure to announce that Dr. Linda Gies has agreed to coordinate the efforts involved to ensure our reaccredidation. Prior to the visit, Eastern will develop and implement a plan for engaging in a comprehensive self-study that will include all Portales campus units and the Ruidoso Instruction Center. Our projected timeline calls for the appointment of the self-study steering committee next fall and the development of the self-study plan during spring 2005. The self-study will occur during the 2005-2006 academic year. Dr. Gies will be calling on many of you in the months ahead to participate in the self-study process. This time of self-examination prior to the visit in 2006-07 can be of tremendous value to us. It gives us an opportunity to look critically at our strengths and the areas in which we need to improve. It is part of the on-going improvement we seek as an institution. I am confident that everyone will give Dr. Gies the support she will need to fulfill our objectives. – Steven G. Gamble, President

Are Your Legal Affairs in Order? – With the everyday stresses that we all cope with, sometimes it's hard to think ahead regarding the "What If?" types of scenarios. But we usually find that the time invested "up front" can eliminate many headaches "down the road." Such is the matter of having your legal affairs in order. It can make difficult situations easier to cope with, for you as well as your loved ones. Good legal "health" eliminates many of the most emotionally draining legal problems, which commonly occur. Over and over again, these problems surface as a result of a crisis, often a sudden illness or death. At the worst possible time it is discovered that no one has the authority to act for their stricken loved one, or no one can find important information required to apply for a needed benefit or to begin helping a grieving widow or widower to settle the affairs of a deceased spouse. To help you become "legally healthy," the Roosevelt County Extension Office is sponsoring the Legal Checkup program, at the NM Ag Expo, Wednesday, Feb. 25 at 10 a.m. at the Jake Lopez Building, Roosevelt Co. Fairgrounds. Attorney Kathleen Haynes will present a program on Estate Planning. Legal Checkup booklets will be available. For more information, call Connie Moyers, Roosevelt Co. Extension Home Economist, at 356.4417.

'Kitchen Creations' Comes to Curry and Roosevelt Counties – People with diabetes in Curry and Roosevelt Counties will have another chance to learn how to prepare good-tasting and healthy foods at the new "Kitchen Creations Cooking School" sponsored by the Curry and Roosevelt County offices of the New Mexico Cooperative Extension Office, in partnership with the New Mexico Department of Health Diabetes Prevention and Control Program. Kitchen Creations offers recipes and up-to-date information for nutrition and meal planning. People with diabetes, as well as their family members or caretakers, are encouraged to attend.

Three separate classes will be conducted:
" Tuesdays for four weeks beginning March 9, 2-5 p.m. at the Curry County Extension Office, 818 Main, Clovis
" Mondays for four weeks beginning March 29, 6-9 p.m. at ENMU Family and Consumer Science Building, Portales
Call Glenda Belcher, Curry Co. Extension Home Economist at 763.6505 to register for Clovis classes and Connie Moyers, Roosevelt Co. Extension Home Economist at 356.4417 to register for Portales class.
The classes are free but spaces are limited, so call now to enroll.
