Retirement Reception for Carolyn Edwards – A campus-wide retirement reception for Carolyn Edwards, director of publications, will be held from 3:30-5 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 2, in Communication Services (Administration Building, Room 218). Refreshments will be served. Please join us in thanking Carolyn for her 17 years of service to Eastern, as well as many more years in higher education.

Finanical Aid and Scholarship Night Set for Tuesday, February 10 – The Multicultural Affairs Office is sponsoring a Financial Aid and Scholarship Night from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 10, at the Student Success Center (CUB lower level). The event is geared toward students having trouble filling out financial aid forms as well as for all students – who are urged to apply early for ENMU Friends of Eastern Scholarships. The Friends of Eastern Foundation has approximately 170 scholarships available. The deadline to apply for these scholarships is March 1. Two representatives from Financial Aid and one from the Friends of Eastern Foundation will be present to answer questions. Refreshments will be served. Examinations in College of Education (rooms will be posted)

Comprehensive Examination Workshop: Saturday, Feb. 7 in the Education Building from 10 a.m. until noon. Students taking the comprehensive examination are strongly urged to attend this workshop. No prior registration necessary.

Comprehensive Examination: Saturday, March 6, in the Education Building from 9 a.m. to noon ans 1-4 p.m. Registration required by Feb. 6.

Writing Proficiency Examination: Saturday, Feb. 7 in the Education Building from 10-11:30 a.m.. Graduate students must complete this exam during thier first semester of graduate study.

There is no charge for these events. Students are required to bring a pen or pencil. Questions may be directed to Pat Gallegos at ext. 2691 or Dr. Cheri Quinn at ext. 2938.

Aqua Aerobics Becomes Convenient Option for Lifelong Wellness Sessions – The class will meet Mondays and Wednesdays from 8-8:50 a.m. in the Natatorium. Dawn Reeves will be the instructor. If you are already enrolled in Lifelong Wellness, please feel free to attend aqua aerobics as one of your activity choices. Fine Arts Students Honored – Christina Hall, junior vocal performance major at ENMU, won the title of Miss Albuquerque last weekend, winning along the way the talent competition as well. Senior Theatre Major/Music Minor Jennifer Livingston also received her acceptance letter for the prestigious Academy of Musical and Dramatic Arts in New York (AMDA). Congratulations to these talented students.

Defensive Driving Scheduled – The below listed Defensive Driving Courses will be offered during the 2004 Spring Semester for first time and refresher courses. Transportation Provided to UNM Career Expo – Attention Graduating Seniors seeking full-time employment and Juniors seeking internships: ENMU Counseling and Career Services Department will providd transportation to the UNM Career Expo in Albuquerque on Tuesday, Feb. 3.

Volunteer Income Tax Services Offered – The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program of Roosevelt County will once again be offering VITA (volunteer income tax assistance) services this year. VITA services will begin Feb. 3 and run through April 15. Hours of operation are on Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Community Services Center, inside the Community Room. We provide free tax consultation and preparation to the low-income, elderly, and disabled citizens of Roosevelt County. No appointment is necessary. ENMU-Roswell Releases Speakers' Bureau List – The Community Relations/College Development Department at ENMU-Roswell has released its 2004 Speakers' Bureau list. Anyone who needs a guest speaker with expertise in a particular subject area may refer to it. Please contact the ENMU-R Community Relations/College Development Office at 624.7404 to make arrangements. Kiwanis Famous Chili Supper Set for Friday, February 13 – Portales Kiwanis presents its famous annual chili supper from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 13 at the Fellowship Hall of the brand new Methodist Church in Portales. Tickets and placemat advertising are still available. Proceeds go to the Kiwanis mission of helping local children. For tickets or more information, call Jim Lee at 562.2675 or 359.2204. Regular and vegetarian chili will be on hand, and tickets are just $5. It's the best chili in town, and it's for a really great cause.

ENMU Hosting Student Art Exhibit from All Three Campuses – Eastern New Mexico University is hosting the 2004 ENMU Student Juried Art Exhibition through Feb. 6 in the Runnels Gallery in Golden Library on the Portales campus. The Awards Ceremony/Reception will be at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 4, in Room 112 of the Jack Williamson Liberal Arts Building. The exhibit and ceremony/reception are free and open to the public.

The 2004 ENMU Student Juried Art Exhibition features art from students in any major at all three ENMU campuses. Art includes works in all media, including traditional and new approaches, as well as motion graphics. All work is original and completed within the last year.

Art faculty from all three ENMU campuses chose entries for the exhibition. William Green, associate professor of art at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, will serve as external juror. He will determine winners, present awards, and speak at the Awards Ceremony/Reception.

Professor Green holds an MFA from the University of Michigan and a BFA from Kansas City Art Institute, in addition to a CATD from London, England.

Distance Education Forum – Distance Education will hold a forum monthly in a two-series format for staff and faculty. The first series, titled Design and Delivery of Online Courses, began on Jan. 30 in Room 110 of the College of Business from 1-3 p.m. The second series, Design and Delivery of Courses Delivered via Videoconference Systems, begins July 30. The Financial Aid Office will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. every Thursday from through March 18 to assist students and parents in completing their 2004/2005 Free Application for Federal Aid (FAFSA). Anyone who would like to complete their FAFSA online for the Fall 2004 semester may come to the office of Financial Aid in the SAS building room 107. There will be someone to answer questions.

Input Sought About ENMU's Teacher Education Program The College of Education and Technology at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales is scheduled for a spring 2004 continuing accreditation review by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). Federal regulations require that accrediting agencies allow for public comment on the qualifications of institutions under consideration for continuing accreditation.

Both NCATE and ENMU recognize graduates, parents, schools, and community organizations have valuable perspectives on the quality of the programs that prepare teachers and other school personnel. ENMU invites interested parties to submit written testimony on the College of Education and Technology to: Board of Examiners, NCATE, 2010 Massachusetts Avenue NW, Suite 500, Washington, DC 20036-1023 or by e-mail to callforcomments@ncate.org.

Comments must address substantive matters related to the quality of professional education programs offered at ENMU, and should specify the respondent's relationship, if any, to the institution (i.e. graduate, present or former faculty member, employer of graduates). Copies of all correspondence received will be sent to ENMU for comment prior to the review. No anonymous testimony will be considered.

Letters of comment should be sent as soon as possible.

New Mexico Public School Textbooks Available for Public Review at ENMU – Teachers, parents, and other community members are invited to review and comment on the proposed Language Arts textbooks approved for adoption by the State of New Mexico's Department of Education Instructional Material Bureau. The new Language Arts textbooks are currently available for examination at the Instructional Resource Center (IRC) located at Eastern New Mexico University's Golden Library.

The IRC is located on the second floor of Golden Library and is open on Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and by appointment. New Mexico follows a six-year cycle in approving textbooks for each subject area for use in the public schools. These new textbooks are for use in all New Mexico public schools for the next six years.

News 3 Director and Students Have Dinner with Albuquerque Journal Reporter – News 3 New Mexico director John Kirby and three students – Abby Dunn/News Anchor, Chris Sturgess/ Producer/ Director, and Jared Olguin/ Producer – had dinner with Albuquerque Journal reporter Olivier Uyttebrouck at Cattle Baron Friday night. President Gamble, Ronnie Birdsong and the Monday Memo editor were also present. John and the students were able to share with the reporter details about their broadcast. News 3 is on the air at 5 p.m. Monday-Thursday. The anchor team of Abby Dunn, Kris Nation (weather) and Jared Olguin and Paul Garcia (sports) bring the latest to viewers in local, state, national and international news. In addition, Jennifer Best and Melissa Chavez are doing some news anchoring on Thursdays. News 3 New Mexico is a professional news broadcast, staffed entirely by ENMU student broadcasters. It airs on KENW-TV (Channel 3 on local cable).

Community Services Center Needs Canned Food – This non-profit organization that provides a variety of services to the residents of Roosevelt County is in great need of canned goods and non-perishable food items to restock the shelves. Homecoming Dates Announced (Greyhounds Will Play Bitter Arch Rival, WT Buffs) – The Eastern New Mexico University Homecoming is scheduled for Oct. 8-10. The Homecoming committee will meet this spring to determine the schedule of events and select the 2004 Homecoming theme. If you have ideas for special events or reunions, we will be happy to assist you. The Homecoming game will match the Greyhounds against the Buffs of West Texas A&M on Saturday, Oct. 9. This is also the legendary "Wagon Wheel" game.

Post Student Jobs on Monstertrak – The Counseling and Career Services office is using Monstertrak.com to post work study/student hire positions available to ENMU students. If you are interested in hiring a student worker for this semester, please post the job on Monstertrak. The directions on using this system are included on this memo. We have already encountered several students who are looking for employment. Each department has been set up in the system, by our office.

ENMU to be Closed for Presidents' Day – Eastern will be closed for Presidents' Day on Monday, Feb. 16. Employees wil have the day off.

Smart Classrooms Becoming Available – The install dates for the smart classrooms in the Sandia Room have been scheduled for Feb. 2-4, and JWLA 112 for Feb. 5-6. Science 214 and Lea Hall 111 have been equipped as smart classrooms, too. There will be a Polycom system working in LH 111, hopefully soon.

Lifelong Wellness Underway for Spring Semester – Many fall semester participants earned their first semester T-shirts and certificates. If you did not participate last fall, I encourage you to sign up this spring. Those of you who were part of the program last fall, if you join again, you will be on your way to a second T-shirt. To earn that second T-shirt you need to participate in three out of four consecutive fall and spring semesters.

Additional benefits to participants for spring will be drawings for basketball tickets for games on Feb. 12, Feb. 14, Feb. 19, and Feb. 21, and for theater tickets for productions on the Main Stage. E-mails will be sent to participants giving instructions for entering the drawings.

AA Meetings – The Lamplighter Group of Alcoholics Anonymous announces that two AA meetings are offered near the campus. The meetings are on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6 p.m. at the Wesley Foundation. These are open meetings, and anyone with a drug or alcohol problem or with concerns for family or friends with drug or alcohol problems are welcomed.
