Festival Romanico
Set for Friday, February 13 Valentines Day
is a day dedicated to romance. But the day before, Friday, Feb.
13, will be a day dedicated to romantic Latin languages. More than
500 high school students from around New Mexico are expected to
participate in the annual Festival Romanico at Eastern New Mexico
University.
The daylong event will run from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Becky
Sharp Auditorium, located in the College of Business, and in the
Campus Union Ballroom. The public is invited.
Students from at least 15 high schools will compete in Spanish poetry,
recitation, essay, original skits, video and talent competitions.
A display of arts and crafts will also be exhibited in the Sandia
Room in the CUB. ENMU students will serve as judges. The whole
festival is a celebration of being bilingual. Bilingualism is an
asset to your life, said Dr. Vitelio Contreras, an assistant
professor of Spanish at ENMU who has served as director of the festival
for the past five years.
He is excited about a newly created $500 scholarship which will
be awarded to a student planning to attend ENMU. He said a winner
would likely be chosen out of essays that students write. ENMUs
newly formed ballet folklorico will also perform traditional Mexican
dances.
Dr. Contreras noted that competition between schools at the festival
has grown over the years, with Lovington, Clovis and Portales high
schools being particularly competitive. He said ENMU would also
use Festival Romanico as an opportunity to try and recruit students
to the University.

Are Your Legal
Affairs in Order? With the everyday stresses that
we all cope with, sometimes it's hard to think ahead regarding the
"What If?" types of scenarios. But we usually find that
the time invested "up front" can eliminate many headaches
"down the road." Such is the matter of having your legal
affairs in order. It can make difficult situations easier to cope
with, for you as well as your loved ones. Good legal "health"
eliminates many of the most emotionally draining legal problems,
which commonly occur. Over and over again, these problems surface
as a result of a crisis, often a sudden illness or death. At the
worst possible time it is discovered that no one has the authority
to act for their stricken loved one, or no one can find important
information required to apply for a needed benefit or to begin helping
a grieving widow or widower to settle the affairs of a deceased
spouse. To help you become "legally healthy," the Roosevelt
County Extension Office is sponsoring the Legal Checkup program,
at the NM Ag Expo, Wednesday, Feb. 25 at 10 a.m. at the Jake Lopez
Building, Roosevelt Co. Fairgrounds. Attorney Kathleen Haynes will
present a program on Estate Planning. Legal Checkup booklets will
be available. For more information, call Connie Moyers, Roosevelt
Co. Extension Home Economist, at 356.4417.
'Kitchen Creations'

and Roosevelt County offices of the New Mexico Cooperative Extension
Office, in partnership with the New Mexico Department of Health
Diabetes Prevention and Control Program. Kitchen Creations offers
recipes and up-to-date information for nutrition and meal planning.
People with diabetes, as well as their family members or caretakers,
are encouraged to attend.
Three separate classes will be conducted:
" Tuesdays for 4 weeks beginning March 9, 2-5 p.m. at the Curry
County Extension Office, 818 Main, Clovis
" Mondays for 4 weeks beginning March 29, 6-9 p.m. at ENMU
Family and Consumer Science Building, Portales
Call Glenda Belcher, Curry Co. Extension Home Economist at 763.6505
to register for Clovis classes and Connie Moyers, Roosevelt Co.
Extension Home Economist at 356.4417 to register for Portales class.
The classes are free but spaces are limited, so call now to enroll.
