Input Sought About
ENMU's Teacher Education Program The College of
Education and Technology at Eastern New Mexico University is scheduled
for a spring 2004 continuing accreditation review by the National
Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). Federal
regulations require that accrediting agencies allow for public comment
on the qualifications of institutions under consideration for continuing
accreditation.
Both NCATE and ENMU recognize graduates, parents, schools, and community
organizations have valuable perspectives on the quality of the programs
that prepare teachers and other school personnel. ENMU invites interested
parties to submit written testimony on the College of Education
and Technology to: Board of Examiners, NCATE, 2010 Massachusetts
Avenue NW, Suite 500, Washington, DC 20036-1023 or by e-mail to
callforcomments@ncate.org.
Comments must address substantive matters related to the quality
of professional education programs offered at ENMU, and should specify
the respondents relationship, if any, to the institution (i.e.
graduate, present or former faculty member, employer of graduates).
Copies of all correspondence received will be sent to ENMU for comment
prior to the review. No anonymous testimony will be considered.
Letters of comment should be received no later than three months

Spring Semester
Begins Tuesday, Jan. 20 Eastern will begin the
2004 spring semester on Tuesday, Jan. 20. The last day to late-register
is on Friday, Jan. 23. Currently enrolled non-freshman students
can register online anytime at www.enmu.edu.

Upward Bound Program
Raising Funds with Krispy Kremes The Upward Bound
program at Eastern New Mexico is selling Krispy Kreme doughnuts
to raise funds for a students' trip to Washington, D.C. in the summer
of 2004. Orders will be taken through Jan. 22. Each dozen of the
original glazed doughnuts will be $6. Money will be collected at
the time the order is placed. Doughnuts will be delivered on Jan.

at Library Local artist Marie Littlejohn will

Becoming Available The install dates for the smart
classrooms in the Sandia Room has been scheduled for Feb. 2-4, and
JWLA 112 for Feb. 5-6. Science 214 and Lea Hall 111 have been equipped
as smart classrooms, too. There will be a Polycom system working
in LH 111, hopefully in 3-5 weeks.

Bell, administrative secretary/records clerk, reports some changes
in the Teacher Education Office, located at ENMU-Roswell. The office
has changed its name to the Portales Information Center. The services
have expanded to fit the new name. The office still has the Teacher
Education Program and the High Plains Writing Project, but now can
help anyone needing:

New Mexico Public
School Textbooks Available for Public Review at ENMU
Teachers, parents, and other community members are invited
to review and comment on the proposed Language Arts textbooks approved
for adoption by the State of New Mexico's Department of Education
Instructional Material Bureau. The new Language Arts textbooks are
currently available for examination at the Instructional Resource
Center (IRC) located at Eastern New Mexico University's Golden Library.
The IRC is located on the second floor of Golden Library and is
open on Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and by appointment.
New Mexico follows a six-year cycle in approving textbooks for each
subject area for use in the public schools. These new textbooks
are for use in all New Mexico public schools for the next six years.

music star Jessica Andrews will appear in a free concert at 8 p.m.
on Wednesday, Jan. 28, in the Campus Union Ballroom. The concert

Lifelong Wellness
Getting Ready for Spring Semester Many fall semester
participants earned their first semester T-shirts and certificates.
If you did not participate last fall, I encourage you to sign up
this spring. Those of you who were part of the program last fall,
if you join again, you will be on your way to a second T-shirt.
To earn that second T-shirt you need to participate in three out
of four consecutive fall and spring semesters.
Additional benefits to participants for spring will be drawings
for basketball tickets for games on Jan. 29, Jan. 31, Feb. 12, Feb.
14, Feb. 19, and Feb. 21, and for theater tickets for productions
on the Main Stage. E-mails will be sent to participants giving instructions
for entering the drawings.

ENMU-Roswell Hits
Record Fall Enrollment The growth trend at ENMU-Roswell
continues, with enrollment for this past fall semester surpassing
the 4,000 mark for the first time. University officials report the
number of students who registered and were served during the fall
2003 semester was 4,004. The fall semester ended December 13.
Course on Death
Offered at ENMU-Roswell Thanatology, the study
of death and the psychological mechanisms for coping with death,
is the topic of a new course this spring semester at ENMU-Roswell.
The class, Psychology 262, will meet on Thursdays on campus from
5:30-6:45 p.m. The course will cover loss and grief management,
specifically focusing on the meaning of death, the process of death,
the rituals of death, causes of death, and responses to death. A
variety of guest lecturers who are professionals in their fields
will also make presentations throughout the semester. Students will
study voodoo, mythology, history, fads, fashions, and the place
of death in art and music. The course will provide an essential
background for residents working in the fields of psychology, nursing,
sociology, social welfare, home management, and human services.
The spring semester at ENMU-Roswell begins Jan. 12. For registration

ENMU-Roswell Holds
Spring Employee In-Service A number of ENMU-Roswell
employees were recognized during the spring faculty and staff in-service
meeting held today on campus. Cherryl Kilness, associate dean of
Instructional Support and chairperson of Developmental Studies,
reported that at the close of regular registration, enrollment for
the spring semester is at 2,586, which is a 4.5 percent increase
over spring 2003. FTE is up 9.5 percent. The number of students
enrolled in online classes totaled 2,058, which is an increase of
500 students from the previous fall semester. Dr. Judy Armstrong,
provost, reported on the university's strategic plan and said the
campus is making good progress towards its three main goals: Superior
student learning, Community development, and Responsible stewardship.
Dr. Armstrong presented certificates and pins to a number of employees
in recognition of their years of service. They are:
Five years: James Edwards, Chaves County Career Center; Delcia
Gudgel, Chaves County Career Center; Ramona Miranda, Student Support
Specialist; and Guadalupe Ramirez, Chaves County Career Center
Ten years: Theresa Chavez, Groundskeeper
Twenty years: Robert Gonzales, Groundskeeper; Tammy Bennett,
Nursing instructor and Nursing Program director
Instructors receiving nominations for the 2004 National Institute
for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) Teaching Excellence
Award from each instructional division are: Marielle Ainsworth,
English instructor; Keith Ervin, EMS instructor; Jan Tharp, Freshman
Seminar/Success Skills for Health Careers instructor; Karen Cain,
Aviation Maintenance Technology instructor, and De Ann Young, Computer
Information Systems instructor. Those who have been selected to
receive NISOD Teaching Excellence Awards and representing the campus
at the annual conference in Austin, Texas, in May are Marielle Ainsworth
and Jan Tharp.
Division of Health Chair, Jane Batson, reported on activities and
plans related to the Rural Community College Initiative (RCCI) Neighbors
Helping Neighbors program. The campus has adopted Sunset Elementary
School, Mountain View Middle School, and University High School
on the south side of the city with the goal of improving access
to education and community economic development. ENMU-Roswell employees
are volunteering to work with the students in these schools, serving
as reading and math tutors and assisting with other extracurricular
activities.
Responding to a proposal brought forward by a group of students,
ENMU-Roswell staff and faculty will be participating in two Pride
Weeks from April 19-30. Employees will dress according to a specific
theme each day of the week.
The University Computer and Technology
Policy Committee (Computer Committee) has recommended
the Campus Desktop Computer Renewal Proposal (CDCRP) be adopted
with the addendum that the program is reviewed on an annual basis.
The Proposal provides a starting point for formalizing the process
of allocating desktop computing resources on this campus. It is
hoped all interested parties will continue to provide comments to
the Computer Committee as they pertain to the CDCRP. The Computer
Committee values all comments and hopes the program will evolve
as all interested parties articulate their desktop computing needs.
Science Fair
The Science Fair is coming Saturday, March 6, 2004. Eastern
New Mexico University is hosting a science fair for sixth through
twelfth graders in Portales. The competition is open to every student
whether home-schooled or in public or private school. Each science
project must be sponsored by an adult mentor, either a parent, a
teacher or an adult friend.
Do you know a student who would enjoy recognition for his or her
ability to do science research? Students may enter any one of these
categories: Behavioral & Social Sciences; Biochemistry (Senior
Division Only); Botany; Chemistry; Computer Science; Earth &
Space Science; Engineering; Environmental Science; Mathematics;
Medicine & Health Science; Microbiology; Physics; Zoology.

Committee The Water Conservation Committee has
been formed to provide guidance to our university as we go forward
in an environment of declining water resources. The membership of

ENMU MBA to Be
Offered Online Eastern New Mexico University (ENMU)
is announcing plans to offer the Master of Business Administration
(MBA) program online. According to Dr. Gerry Huybregts, dean of
the ENMU College of Business, offering the ENMU MBA online is a
natural progression for the ENMU program. Currently, ENMU offers
the MBA through an instructional television system (ITV) that broadcasts
classes to Cannon AFB, Clovis, Hobbs, Roswell, and Ruidoso. Additionally,
ENMU will deliver MBA classes to Carlsbad using video conferencing
starting January 2004. Dr Lee Weyant, ENMU MBA coordinator, said
that ENMU will offer Organizational Behavior and International Marketing
during the spring semester. Students interested in registering for
these classes should complete registration by Jan. 9, 2004. Classes
will begin Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004. For more information about the

Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship Available
Students interested in applying for the Barry M. Goldwater

or 562.2328. The scholarship is awarded based on merit to those
who will be college juniors and those who will be college seniors
in the 2004-2005 academic year, have outstanding potential, and
intend to pursue careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, or
engineering.
AA Meetings
The Lamplighter Group of Alcoholics Anonymous announces that two
AA meetings are offered near the campus. The meetings are on Tuesdays
and Thursdays at 6 p.m. at the Wesley Foundation. These are open
meetings, and anyone with a drug or alcohol problem or with concerns
for family or friends with drug or alcohol problems are welcomed.

Phlebotomy Technique Training a 12-week (40 lecture
and 120 hour lab) class taught by Mike Blankenship, CMT, will prepare
you to take the ASCP examination. Proof of high school diploma or
GED, immunizations and liability insurance are required before clinical
rotation can begin. Lecture begins Tuesday, Jan. 27, 5:30-9 p.m.,
SAS-166. The fee is $325 with one required textbook ($47.50) and
one optional textbook ($46.75) available at the ENMU bookstore.

Microsoft Word and Excel Basics learn the fundamentals
of these two programs with Technology Resource Center Manager, Chris

Swimming for ages four years and up with Kristi Hamilton,
Lifeguard/Red Cross Certified Instructor, with four two-week rotations
scheduled Mondays-Thursdays, 4-4:50 p.m. at the Natatorium for a
fee of $40, which includes a Red Cross Card for the level passed.
Rotation dates are: #1-Feb. 2-12; #2-March 1-11; #3-March 29-April
8; and #4-April 19-29. Please register by Friday prior to each rotation.
Ballet (Child and Adult)/Tap/Jazz/Pointe 11 age-related
13-week classes with Summer Lasiter beginning the week of Feb. 2.
Leotards of any color with pink or white tights for ballet/tap and

Internet Basics learn the basics with Technology Resource

Paralegal Live lecture classes will be held for six
weeks from 6-9:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays and 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
on Saturdays, Feb. 17-March 27, COB-137. Five textbooks for approximately
$250 can be ordered at registration by Feb. 10. The fee is $845.
Real Estate Weekend Workshops Lou Tulga, CRB, Albuquerque
will conduct two weekend real estate workshops for a total of 32
