Country Star Jessica Andrews in Free-Admission Concert on Wednesday – 19-year-old country singing star Jessica Andrews will appear in a free-admission concert at 8 p.m. this Wednesday, Jan. 28, in the Campus Union Ballroom at Eastern New Mexico University. Multicultural Affairs Organization Fair Is Today – The Multicultural Affairs Organization Fair is today, Jan. 26, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Ground Zero. This will be an opportunity for everybody on campus (faculty, staff, and students) to know who you are and your organizations. Make sure your organizations are notified and have representatives. The organizations are: N.A.T.I.V.E; Kappa Psi Alpha, B.E.S.O, A.H.O.R.A, Spanish Club, Kappa Delta Chi, Omega Delta Phi, Ballet Folklorico. International Club, and all of your offices. Each organization will have their own table to provide information. This will be a great opportunity to talk about upcoming events. Refreshments will be served.

ENMU Hosting Student Art Exhibit from All Three Campuses – Eastern New Mexico University is hosting the 2004 ENMU Student Juried Art Exhibition, Jan. 26–Feb. 6, in the Runnels Gallery in Golden Library on the Portales campus. The Awards Ceremony/Reception will be at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 4, in Room 112 of the Jack Williamson Liberal Arts Building. The exhibit and ceremony/reception are free and open to the public.

The 2004 ENMU Student Juried Art Exhibition is open to all currently enrolled students in any major at all three ENMU campuses. Eligible art can include works in any media, including traditional and new approaches, as well as motion graphics. All work must be original and completed within the last year. No work from previous exhibits is eligible.

Art faculty from all three ENMU campuses will choose entries for the exhibition. William Green, associate professor of art at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, will serve as external juror. He will determine winners, present awards, and speak at the Awards Ceremony/Reception.

Professor Green holds an MFA from the University of Michigan and a BFA from Kansas City Art Institute, in addition to a CATD from London, England.

ENMU Women Sponsoring 'Lovers for Learning' Dinner – The Eastern New Mexico University Women organization is sponsoring a "Lovers for Learning" scholarship fundraiser dinner at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 10, upstairs at The Roosevelt restaurant in Portales. The Valentine's dinner will feature musical entertainment and a silent auction. Tickets are $25 per ticket, with proceeds going toward women's scholarships at ENMU. The menu includes a choice of green chili chicken or 8-ounce New York center cut steak. At least year's event, ENMU Women raised more than $1,400 for women's scholarships. The dinner is not intended to be a "for couples only" event. Anyone who wants to support women's education at ENMU is encouraged to attend. Seating capacity is limited to 70. Small Business Development Center Located at ENMU-Roswell Announces a Record Year of Service – The Small Business Development Center (SBDC), located in the Occupational Technology Center on the campus of Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell, announced a record year of service to the City of Roswell, Chaves, and Lincoln counties.

Accomplishments for the year of 2003 included:
· The SBDC assisted a total of 341 clients.
· New clients numbered 274.
· Over $42 million in capital formation was created for 21 different businesses.
· Fourteen new businesses were established.
· 192 new jobs were created.
· 73 existing jobs were retained.
· A new incubator and youth entrepreneurship facility began operation.

The SBDC team members responsible for these significant accomplishments are Gene Simmons, Director; Nancy Holland, Business Support Specialist; Janie Gosselin, Business Specialist; Carolyn Arias, Office Manager; David Howard, Incubator Manager.

Distance Education Forum – Distance Education will hold a forum monthly in a two-series format for staff and faculty. The first series, titled Design and Delivery of Online Courses, will begin on Jan. 30 in Room 110 of the College of Business from 1-3 p.m. The second series, Design and Delivery of Courses Delivered via Videoconference Systems, begins July 30. The Financial Aid Office will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. every Thursday from Jan. 29 through March 18 to assist students and parents in completing their 2004/2005 Free Application for Federal Aid (FAFSA). Anyone who would like to complete their FAFSA online for the Fall 2004 semester may come to the office of Financial Aid in the SAS building room 107. There will be someone to answer questions.

Clarinet Students Perform at Baylor University – Clarinet Students of Dr. Tamara Raatz traveled to Baylor University on Jan. 16 to perform and participate in a Guest Artist Masterclass featuring Kenneth Grant, professor of clarinet at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y. The students participating from Eastern New Mexico University were Victoria Fernandez, a freshman music major from Clovis, Tira Neal, a sophomore music major from Artesia, Rodrigo Reyes, a senior music major from Artesia, and Katie Smith, a high school student from Clovis.

Howard Dean Forum Set for January 29 – All interested in knowing more about Governor Howard Dean, candidate for President, come to the Dean for President Rally on Thursday, Jan. 29, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.. The rally will be in the Pecos Room of the CUB. Coffee and donuts will be available. Come meet representatives of the Dean for America Campaign for answers to questions and information. Author Who Spoke at ENMU Listed as One of Top 15 Women to Watch – Alisa Valdez-Rodriguez, whom ENMU hosted last semester, is listed by MSN.Com as one of the top 15 women to watch in 2004. Input Sought About ENMU's Teacher Education Program The College of Education and Technology at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales is scheduled for a spring 2004 continuing accreditation review by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). Federal regulations require that accrediting agencies allow for public comment on the qualifications of institutions under consideration for continuing accreditation.

Both NCATE and ENMU recognize graduates, parents, schools, and community organizations have valuable perspectives on the quality of the programs that prepare teachers and other school personnel. ENMU invites interested parties to submit written testimony on the College of Education and Technology to: Board of Examiners, NCATE, 2010 Massachusetts Avenue NW, Suite 500, Washington, DC 20036-1023 or by e-mail to callforcomments@ncate.org.

Comments must address substantive matters related to the quality of professional education programs offered at ENMU, and should specify the respondent's relationship, if any, to the institution (i.e. graduate, present or former faculty member, employer of graduates). Copies of all correspondence received will be sent to ENMU for comment prior to the review. No anonymous testimony will be considered.

Letters of comment should be sent as soon as possible.

ENMU-Portales Office at ENMU-Roswell Gets New Moniker – ChrisAnne Bell, administrative secretary/records clerk, reports some changes in the Teacher Education Office, located at ENMU-Roswell. The office has changed its name to the Portales Information Center. The services have expanded to fit the new name. The office still has the Teacher Education Program and the High Plains Writing Project, but now can help anyone needing:

ENMU-Portales Opens MBA Office at ENMU-Roswell – Area residents interested in pursuing a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from Eastern New Mexico University in Portales can now find out more information on the ENMU-Roswell campus.  Dr. Lee Weyant, ENMU MBA Coordinator, announced an MBA office will open on the Roswell campus on Jan. 21.

Initially, the office will be open every Wednesday from 3-5 p.m. The new MBA office will be located in the Portales Information Center, in Room 205 of the Instructional Center.
 
"Opening this office provides an opportunity for better understanding of Roswell's graduate business education needs," said Weyant. "Also, this office gives all Roswell business students better access to an advisor for the ENMU undergraduate and graduate business degrees," he said.

ENMU-Roswell Has New Web Site – Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell's Web site has a new look. For the past eight months, University staff and Yates Consulting have worked to redesign the site. Visitors will find it easier to navigate the site, which has a fresh, modern appearance, more information and new features, like an interactive campus map and University calendar.

"We have known for awhile that our current Web site needed a make-over and we have spent a lot of time developing the new pages so that they are useful for current students and staff, as well as visitors and prospective students," said Donna Gutierrez, Community Relations director and game photographer for the April Fool's Basketball Battle between the Roswell and Portales campuses. "Of course, our Web site will continue to evolve and change as we maintain it. We do hope to hear from students and visitors to the site about what they like and don't like, because this is our connection to the world outside of our campus and we want to be responsive to suggestions," she said. Jacob Puckett, Web Master and Raul De Lara, Publications Coordinator worked with Yates on the new web site, providing technical assistance and graphic elements. New Mexico Public School Textbooks Available for Public Review at ENMU – Teachers, parents, and other community members are invited to review and comment on the proposed Language Arts textbooks approved for adoption by the State of New Mexico's Department of Education Instructional Material Bureau. The new Language Arts textbooks are currently available for examination at the Instructional Resource Center (IRC) located at Eastern New Mexico University's Golden Library.

The IRC is located on the second floor of Golden Library and is open on Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and by appointment. New Mexico follows a six-year cycle in approving textbooks for each subject area for use in the public schools. These new textbooks are for use in all New Mexico public schools for the next six years.

Global Community Course Being Offered – To meet the General Education requirement for Globalization and Diversity, the Family & Consumer Sciences Department. will offer Developing Global Community Family Members FCS 310 this semester on MWF at 10 a.m. in Room 116 of the College of Education. News 3 Rolling – News 3 New Mexico is on the air at 5 p.m. each day, Monday-Thursday. The anchor team of Abby Dunn, Kris Nation (weather) and Jared Olguin and Paul Garcia (sports) bring the latest to viewers in local, state, national and international news. In addition, Jennifer Best and Melissa Chavez are doing some news anchoring on Thursdays. News 3 New Mexico is a professional news broadcast, staffed entirely by ENMU student broadcasters. It airs on KENW-TV (Channel 3 on local cable).

Community Services Center Needs Canned Food – This non-profit organization that provides a variety of services to the residents of Roosevelt County is in great need of canned goods and non-perishable food items to restock the shelves. ENMU-Roswell Security to Receive AED – In an effort to enhance emergency preparedness resources on campus, the security staff at ENMU-Roswell will soon have a dedicated Automated External Defibrillator (AED) to use in the event of a cardiac emergency. The AED will be placed in a campus police car on Monday, Feb. 9 at 11 a.m. in front of the Student Services Center. The campus safety team will also be present for the event. Late last year, ENMU-Roswell purchased an AED for campus use and several staff members, including Security Chief Ernie Williamson, have received training in CPR and in the use of the AED in a sudden cardiac arrest situation. Incidents have shown that the use of an AED in the hands of a trained layperson can mean the difference between life and death. The EMS program at ENMU-Roswell is providing AED training through the American Heart Association. For more information on the AED's, the Public Access Defibrillation program or any American Heart Association courses, call 624.7249.

Homecoming Dates Announced (Greyhounds Will Play Bitter Arch Rival, WT Buffs) – The Eastern New Mexico University Homecoming is scheduled for Oct. 8-10. The Homecoming committee will meet this spring to determine the schedule of events and select the 2004 Homecoming theme. If you have ideas for special events or reunions, we will be happy to assist you. The Homecoming game will match the Greyhounds against the Buffs of West Texas A&M on Saturday, Oct. 9. This is also the legendary "Wagon Wheel" game.

Post Student Jobs on Monstertrak – The Counseling and Career Services office is using Monstertrak.com to post work study/student hire positions available to ENMU students. If you are interested in hiring a student worker for this semester, please post the job on Monstertrak. The directions on using this system are included on this memo. We have already encountered several students who are looking for employment. Each department has been set up in the system, by our office.

To enter job openings, you will need to follow these simple steps:

ENMU to be Closed for Presidents' Day – Eastern will be closed for Presidents' Day on Monday, Feb. 16. Employees wil have the day off.

Smart Classrooms Becoming Available – The install dates for the smart classrooms in the Sandia Room has been scheduled for Feb. 2-4, and JWLA 112 for Feb. 5-6. Science 214 and Lea Hall 111 have been equipped as smart classrooms, too. There will be a Polycom system working in LH 111, hopefully in 3-5 weeks.

Lifelong Wellness Underway for Spring Semester – Many fall semester participants earned their first semester T-shirts and certificates. If you did not participate last fall, I encourage you to sign up this spring. Those of you who were part of the program last fall, if you join again, you will be on your way to a second T-shirt. To earn that second T-shirt you need to participate in three out of four consecutive fall and spring semesters.

Additional benefits to participants for spring will be drawings for basketball tickets for games on Jan. 29, Jan. 31, Feb. 12, Feb. 14, Feb. 19, and Feb. 21, and for theater tickets for productions on the Main Stage. E-mails will be sent to participants giving instructions for entering the drawings.

T-Shirts Available for Successful Participants of Lifelong Wellness - We will have a table in the lobby of Greyhound Arena on Thursday, Jan. 29, from 11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. where you can pick up your T-shirt if you have not already received it. The University Computer and Technology Policy Committee (Computer Committee) has recommended the Campus Desktop Computer Renewal Proposal (CDCRP) be adopted with the addendum that the program is reviewed on an annual basis. The Proposal provides a starting point for formalizing the process of allocating desktop computing resources on this campus. It is hoped all interested parties will continue to provide comments to the Computer Committee as they pertain to the CDCRP. The Computer Committee values all comments and hopes the program will evolve as all interested parties articulate their desktop computing needs.

Science Fair – The Science Fair is coming Saturday, March 6, 2004. Eastern New Mexico University is hosting a science fair for sixth through twelfth graders in Portales. The competition is open to every student whether home-schooled or in public or private school. Each science project must be sponsored by an adult mentor, either a parent, a teacher or an adult friend.

Do you know a student who would enjoy recognition for his or her ability to do science research? Students may enter any one of these categories: Behavioral & Social Sciences; Biochemistry (Senior Division Only); Botany; Chemistry; Computer Science; Earth & Space Science; Engineering; Environmental Science; Mathematics; Medicine & Health Science; Microbiology; Physics; Zoology.

ENMU MBA to Be Offered Online – Eastern New Mexico University (ENMU) is announcing plans to offer the Master of Business Administration (MBA) program online. According to Dr. Gerry Huybregts, dean of the ENMU College of Business, offering the ENMU MBA online is a natural progression for the ENMU program. Currently, ENMU offers the MBA through an instructional television system (ITV) that broadcasts classes to Cannon AFB, Clovis, Hobbs, Roswell, and Ruidoso. Additionally, ENMU will deliver MBA classes to Carlsbad using video conferencing starting this semester. Dr Lee Weyant, ENMU MBA coordinator, said that ENMU will offer Organizational Behavior and International Marketing during the spring semester. Students interested in registering for these classes should complete registration by Jan. 9, 2004. Classes will begin Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004. AA Meetings – The Lamplighter Group of Alcoholics Anonymous announces that two AA meetings are offered near the campus. The meetings are on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6 p.m. at the Wesley Foundation. These are open meetings, and anyone with a drug or alcohol problem or with concerns for family or friends with drug or alcohol problems are welcomed.

Tax Accounting for Small Businesses – learn tax-saving strategies for your small business with Gene Smith, Thursdays, 6-8 p.m., Jan. 22 and 29, COB-156. The fee is $40. Please register by Jan. 20.
Fly Rod Building – an eight-week class with Vance Dewbre, Thursdays, 6:30-9 p.m., January 22-March 11, JWLA-109. The fee is $35 with material costs ranging from $100-250 depending upon the quality of selection. Please register by Jan. 20.
Family Photo Calendar – ages 14 years through adult will create a family oriented photo calendar with Creative Memories Consultant Mandi Park providing a packaged kit containing two calendars! Keep one and give the other as a gift or bring a friend Saturday, Jan. 24, 9 a.m.-12 p.m., JWLA-109. The fee is $10 with a kit fee of $20, payable to the instructor. Don't forget your 12 to 24 family photos showcasing seasonal traditions. Please register by Jan. 21.
Phlebotomy Technique Training – a 12-week (40 lecture and 120 hour lab) class taught by Mike Blankenship, CMT, will prepare you to take the ASCP examination. Proof of high school diploma or GED, immunizations and liability insurance are required before clinical rotation can begin. Lecture begins Tuesday, Jan. 27, 5:30-9 p.m., SAS-166. The fee is $325 with one required textbook ($47.50) and one optional textbook ($46.75) available at the ENMU bookstore. Please register by Jan. 22.
Microsoft Word and Excel Basics – learn the fundamentals of these two programs with Technology Resource Center Manager, Chris Stockdale. Your choice of either Thursday, Jan. 29 or March 4, 6-8:30 p.m., COB-132 for a fee of $30. Please be sure to bring a diskette.
Swimming – for ages four years and up with Kristi Hamilton, Lifeguard/Red Cross Certified Instructor, with four two-week rotations scheduled Mondays-Thursdays, 4-4:50 p.m. at the Natatorium for a fee of $40, which includes a Red Cross Card for the level passed. Rotation dates are: #1-Feb. 2-12; #2-March 1-11; #3-March 29-April 8; and #4-April 19-29. Please register by Friday prior to each rotation.
Ballet (Child and Adult)/Tap/Jazz/Pointe – 11 age-related 13-week classes with Summer Lasiter beginning the week of Feb. 2. Leotards of any color with pink or white tights for ballet/tap and black tights for jazz as well appropriate shoes are required except for adult ballet, which requires comfortable clothes and ballet shoes. Paralegal – Live lecture classes will be held for six weeks from 6-9:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturdays, Feb. 17-March 27, COB-137. Five textbooks for approximately $250 can be ordered at registration by Feb. 10. The fee is $845.
Real Estate Weekend Workshops – Lou Tulga, CRB, Albuquerque will conduct two weekend real estate workshops for a total of 32 continuing education hours, Campus Union, Sandia Room. Pre-pay $330 for the two weekends and receive a $15 discount, or register for any one or more classes that you need to attend.
