Next 'Lunch and Learn' on April 6 – Limited spaces are available for Lunch and Learn, "Don't Shoot the Messenger," on Tuesday, April 6, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the COB, Room 103. Lunch will be provided. Those who would like to attend should email sd.assistant@enmu.edu. Reservations will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis.

Changes in Various Campus Activities Announced – There will be no College Music Tour during the month of April. The Big Brothers/Big Sisters Orientation for April 8 has been cancelled. Lastly, the Trash Walk, sponsored by Portales City Hall, has been rescheduled from April 24 to Saturday, April 17. On the calendar it is called the ENMU-Portales Community Action Day. Student organizations that wish to sign up may pick up an application in CU 104.

Thesis Defense – A Study of the Potential Effects of Automobile Traffic on Lithic Flakes, presented by Albert Cheung. Friday, April 9 in Lea Hall, Room 123, at 2:00 P.M. All who are interested are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Internship Presentation – Please join the faculty of the College of Business in COB 117 on Tuesday, April 6, at 2:30 p.m. as Amorette T. Sanchez presents the results of her internship at the ENMU Internal Auditor's office. A copy of the final paper is available for review in COB 204.

Summer Aid Applications Available April 1 – Summer Aid Applications will be available April 1 in the Office of Student Financial Aid and online through the Financial Aid website. All students seeking financial aid for the summer sessions must fill out and submit one if these forms after registering for summer classes.

ENMU Concert Band Clinic on April 5-6 – Eastern New Mexico University will host the 2004 Concert Band Clinic, featuring the Clovis High School Symphony Band, Artesia High School Band, (Clovis) Marshal Junior High School Varsity Band and (Amarillo) Randall High School Symphonic Band from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on April 5-6 in the Campus Union Ballroom in Portales. The host is Dustin Seifert, director of ENMU university bands, and the clinician is Dr. Michael Golemo, director of university bands at Iowa State University. Tiki Week at Student Success Center – Hey! It is tiki week at the Student Success Center! Come on down and let a tutor lei one on ya. Some of the bodacious events include tropical trivia, raffling Hawaiian shirts off every day of the week, raffling off a gnarley $25 gift certifcate to the Bookstore and every fifth visitor will receive a rad door prize and a raffle ticket. The University community is invited to participate. Surf is up dude!

Teacher Education Advising Session at ENMU-Portales on Wednesday, March 31 – Eastern will host a teacher education advising session from 4-6:30 p.m. in the CUB Sandia Room on Wednesday, March 31. The "Everything You Wanted to Know About Teacher Education" session will provide information on general education requirements, admission requirements, field experience requirements, and important deadlines. ENMU-Roswell Observes Spring Break With Abbreviated Campus Hours – Students and faculty at Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell will be taking some time off from classes the last week of March. Spring Break will run from Sunday, March 28 through Saturday, April 3. All main campus offices, including the bookstore, student computer lab, and the library, will remain open. However, from Monday, March 29 through Friday, April 2 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. GED testing, LaserGrade testing and computer-based testing will not be conducted during this week. Placement tests will continue to be conducted during Spring Break week between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Classes will resume Monday, April 5. For campus information, call 624.7000.

Child Sexual Abuse Workshop Set for April 14 – Child Sexual Abuse WorkshopsPresented by Stella Gallegos, LMSW, on Wednesday, April 14, Becky Sharp Auditorium in the College of Business from 2-5 p.m. for ENMU students and professionals. ENMU-Roswell Announces Upcoming Events – Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell and the New Mexico Department of Labor will host the Third Annual Spring Job Fair on Saturday, April 10 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Roswell Convention and Civic Center, 912 N. Main. Admission is free.

High school juniors and seniors and parents are invited to spend an Evening with Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell on Thursday, April 15 from 6-8 p.m. in the Campus Union Building. Fund Set Up for Injured ENMU Student – Matt Jackson, a Garvey Processing employee, fell 47 feet from a ladder onto a catwalk at work on Monday, March 1.He is currently in Surgical Intensive Care Unit at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock with injuries to his back and pelvis. Matt is an ENMU student. A fund has been set up at Portales National Bank. Donations may be made at any of the bank's locations.

Learn About Law School – Want to learn more about law school? The ENMU Phi Alpha Delta Pre-Law Fraternity is sponsoring a student visit to Texas Tech University School of Law, Friday, April 2. Attend an actual law school class; have lunch with law school faculty and students; learn about the admissions and financial aid process. The van will leave ENMU promptly at 7 a.m. Seats are guaranteed and there is no cost for ENMU Phi Alpha Delta Pre-Law Fraternity members. Attention Sophomores: Stay on Track to Graduation – Beginning with the registrations for summer and fall 2004, all students with less than 60 semester hours will be required to consult with an advisor prior to registering. To prepare for your advising session, print your transcript from the web, prepare a tentative degree plan if you do not already have one
(see <http://www.enmu.edu/degreeplans04> for blank forms), and contact your advisor for an appointment. After consulting with your advisor, you may register online or at the Registrar’s Office. Please contact the Registrar’s Office if you have any questions.

Upward Bound Seeking Teachers – The Eastern New Mexico University Upward Bound Program is looking for qualified individuals to teach Upward Bound Classes this summer. The positions can be work-study, student hire, and licensed or professional teachers. Instructors are needed in the following areas:

Math (1 position for each class: Pre-Algebra through Pre-Calculus), English (1 position for each class: Composition and Literature), French (Beginning), American Sign Language (Beginning), Science (1 position for each class: Chemistry and Anatomy), Study Skills (Real World 101), American Government (Civics), Film Appreciation, Beginning Swimming, Weight Training and Art.

The dates of employment will be from June 14 through July 22, with mandatory training on June 4. Salary ranges from $8 to $15 an hour depending on teaching experience.

In addition, the Upward Bound Program is seeking one qualified hall director and five resident assistants. Benefits include room and board plus a salary of $200-$300 per week. Dates of employment are June 2 through July 30, with mandatory training June 2 through June 5.

Student Research Conference Set for April 13 – Eastern New Mexico University will host the 30th Annual Student Research Conference on Tuesday, April 13, from 1-3 p.m. in the College Of Business. The categories are business, communication, English, Hispanic studies, humanities and social sciences, math/computer science and the sciences.Cash awards will be given to both graduate and undergraduate student winners in each category. Awards will be presented at a 6 p.m. banquet in the Campus Union Ballroom. All students and faculty are invited to attend presentations. Endowed Scholarships and Departmental Awards Ceremony – On Tuesday, April 13, classes will be dismissed from 3:30-5 p.m. so that students and faculty may attend the Spring Endowed Scholarship and Department Awards Program. Early afternoon and evening classes will meet as usual. The program will begin at 3:30 pm in the Campus Union Ballroom. Endowed sholarships and department honors will be presented. Graduation honors will be presented at the Honors Convocation to be held Friday, May 14.

2004 President's 'Spirit of Eastern Awards' Call for Nominations – In 1995 the Board of Regents approved an employee compensation bonus program known as the "President's Spirit of Eastern Awards." Any employee or student is encouraged to nominate one or more faculty, professional, and/or support staff members whom s/he believes has performed in the most superior manner relative to the award criteria listed on the nomination form. Deadline for submitting nominations is 5 p.m. on April 2.

President Gamble has appointed a selection committee, made up of prior award winners, who will review all nominations and make recommendations to him. Those nominees confirmed (four employees from each employee group) will receive a check for $500, a plaque, and a pin and will be recognized at the Spirit of Eastern Awards Ceremony at 3:30 p.m. (refreshments at 3 p.m.) on Wednesday, April 14, in the University Theatre for the Portales and Ruidoso Campus. Roswell campus employees and students should contact the Human Resources department for nomination forms. The Roswell campus ceremony is held at the begninning of the fall semester.

ENMU Is On TV – Eastern is currently sponsoring the 7:56 a.m. local news break on KOBR-TV in Roswell each Wednesday morning during the Today Show. After an announcement that the newscast is sponsored by Eastern New Mexico University, a 30-second award-winning ENMU TV spot is shown.

Defensive Driving Scheduled – The following Defensive Driving Courses will also be offered during the 2004 Spring Semester for first time and refresher courses. For students, faculty and staff required to drive university vehicles: April 12, 6-9 p.m., Aztec Room, first-time class; April 13, 6-9 p.m., Aztec Room, six-hour class; April 21, 1-5 p.m., Aztec Room, refresher class, four-hour class. Anyone required to attend one of the classes must sign up at the University Campus Police.

Volunteer Income Tax Services Offered – The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program of Roosevelt County will once again be offering VITA (volunteer income tax assistance) services this year. VITA services will run through April 15. Hours of operation are on Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Community Services Center, inside the Community Room. We provide free tax consultation and preparation to the low-income, elderly, and disabled citizens of Roosevelt County. No appointment is necessary. If you have any questions, please contact Vonnie Banther at 356.8576, ext. 22.

Community Services Center Needs Canned Food – This non-profit organization that provides a variety of services to the residents of Roosevelt County is in great need of canned goods and non-perishable food items to restock the shelves. Post Student Jobs on Monstertrak – The Counseling and Career Services office is using Monstertrak.com to post work study/student hire positions available to ENMU students. If you are interested in hiring a student worker for this semester, please post the job on Monstertrak. The directions on using this system are included on this memo. We have already encountered several students who are looking for employment. Each department has been set up in the system, by our office.
