Manuel Varela, associate professor of biology, at Eastern New Mexico
University, has been notified that he will receive a $150,000 AREA
(Academic Research Enhancement Award) grant for a study of solute
(dissolved substance) transporters.I received the grant from
the National Institutes of Health so that we could study how molecules
cross the membrane, says Varela. If we can figure out
how these transporters work in bacteria, we can say they might work
elsewhere, like in genetic research, adds Varela. The grant,
scheduled to start in July, will last three years. The study will
look at ways to help combat genetic diseases. Cystic fibrosis
is one example of a genetic disease with a defective transporter,
says Varela. Varela intends on hiring two graduate students as well
as two undergraduate students to assist him in the research process.

General Comments
"Just a note of appreciation. I wanted to tell you how much
I love teaching my Comm 101 class. I think I'm doing a good job,
but I really owe the department at ENMU a lot. I'm comfortable with
the curriculum, I know the material, and I feel prepared for this.
I may/not be asked to teach another class here and no doubt there's
room for improvement, but it's been a wonderful experience because
of the education I received at ENMU. I just wanted to let you know
how much I appreciate it. P.S. My son, Eric Irvin, has received
scholarships and is attending ENMU this fall. He's going to try
out for the football team even though he only started playing his
senior year. (He did make the 6-man all star team and will play
for the North All Stars in June.) ENMU graduate assistant
