ENMU Receives
NCATE Accreditation – I am pleased to report
that the Unit Accreditation Board of the National Council for Accreditation
of Teacher Education (NCATE) has approved the recommendation of
the Board of Examiners for continued accreditation of ENMU's teacher
education initial preparation and advanced preparation levels. This
continuing accreditation was with one condition. Eastern will be
required to host a visit no later than fall 2006, focused solely
on Standard 2 (Assessment System and Unit Evaluation). I want to
thank everyone involved (particularly Dr. Isham and his steering
committee) for their role in this successful request for continued
accreditation. The final report contained several statements of
praise for the quality of our teacher education faculty and staff
and the learning opportunities we provide our students. I am confident
we will be able to demonstrate by fall 2006 that we have in place
a comprehensive and integrated set of evaluation measures that document
the efficacy of our programs and the measures used to monitor candidate
performance. Congratulations to all involved. – Steven

Caller ID
Updated on Camnpus Phones – AT&T has completed
the installation of the new long distance ISDN circuits that allows
Caller ID to be sent with our campus outbound long distance and
international calls. A few months ago, Qwest installed local ISDN
circuits that allow our PBX to accept Caller ID on local and long
distance calls, but only local outbound calls were able to send
Caller ID. Now all calls will send and receive caller ID. The campus
community needs to be aware that our current system supports Caller
ID only on incoming calls to the campus digital phones. The good
news is that all outgoing calls from the campus now carry Caller
ID. This includes calls from digital, analog, fax or modem lines.

Software Clearinghouse
Offering New Titles – The New Mexico Educational
Software Clearing House (NMESCH), located in the Center for Teaching
Excellence (CTE) at ENMU, is offering for review two new educational
software programs: Cross Country USA 2 and Auditory Memory for Quick
Stories. If the following reviews interest you, come check out the
software for yourself at the CTE.
Cross Country USA 2 is an educational software simulation game,
produced by Ingenuity Works Inc., aimed at teaching basic facts
about the United States, map reading and interpretation, and budgeting
skills. Students participate in one or two player games as truck
drivers responsible for delivering goods to places across the country
given budget constraints, and limited pick-up and delivery options.
All in all, Cross Country USA 2 accomplishes its educational objectives
successfully, and is fun to play too. The game can be useful from
K-12 grades, and would recommend it to teachers looking for a good
classroom resource with these educational needs.
Auditory Memory for Quick Stories is an interactive program for
improving auditory memory and comprehensive skills. The CD-ROM and
Reproductive Workbook contain delightful and engaging short stories
with follow-up comprehensive questions. This software accomplishes
its goal of improving auditory memory and comprehension skills through
drill and practice of listening and understanding skills. In a nutshell,
this software is recommended for the teaching of elementary school
kids auditory memory skills.

the clinic a check for $1,000 for needed equipment and an exam table
was high on the list.
In an effort to raise awareness about the
negative effects of smoking, the ENMU-Roswell Student Activity Board
and the Smoking Cessation Program will present “Smoke
Outta My Hair.” The event will
be held on Tuesday, Nov. 9 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Student
Services Center lobby on campus. Interested participants will receive
a temporary hair coloring to symbolize the smoke that lingers in
hair long after the cigarette is extinguished. The event is centered
upon the importance of a support group and ‘friends helping
friends’ to quit smoking. Smoking cessation staff and students
will also provide free information on smoking cessation programs,
gums and patches. Prizes and refreshments will also be available
throughout the day. The Smoking Cessation program at ENMU-Roswell
is funded by the New Mexico Department of Health. For more information,
contact Giselle Keyes at 624.7373.
As a service to area residents interested in current weather information,
the Safety Engineering Technology program at ENMU-Roswell has added
three ‘real time’ regional radar profiles to its home
page on the campus web site. Individuals looking for up-to-date
radar images covering Roswell, Albuquerque, Clovis, El
Paso and all areas in between, can type in ‘radar,’
‘storm,’ or ‘weather’ in the upper left
hand corner search box on the ENMU-Roswell home page (www.roswell.enmu.edu),
then click on the first entry for Safety Engineering to be directed
to current weather information. The weather radar link is located
in the lower left hand corner. Severe weather ‘written’
notices can be found on the NOAA weather web site by clicking on
the city’s home page hotlink located above the radar image
on the NOAA site. For more information, contact Michael O’Berry,
Safety Engineering/Fire Protection Technologies at 624.7381.
Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell invites the community to attend
a Christmas Bazaar on Friday, Dec. 3 from 10 a.m.
to 7 p.m. in the Instructional Center on campus. Proceeds from the
event will benefit the ENMU-Roswell Foundation’s College Access
Program Scholarships (CAPS). The event is free and open to the public.
A wide variety of handcrafted merchandise will be available for
sale, with everything priced under $25. Those who attend the bazaar
can visit Mrs. Santa’s Kitchen, Jewelry Box, Sewing Basket,
and Yarn Basket. Santa’s Pottery Shed, Arts and Crafts Shop,
Library, and Attic will also be open for business. A special area
will be available just for children, The Elves’ Gift Shop,
where everything is priced under $2.00, and the Elves’ Workshop,
where children can make their own gifts for family and friends.
Children can also have their picture taken with Santa. For more
information about the Bazaar or to reserve a craft table, contact
the Liberal Arts department on campus at 624.7253 or Annemarie Oldfield
at 624.7001.
A first-year student at ENMU-Roswell, Katie Aves, 20, is the winner
of the William C. Witter Scholarship essay competition
granted by the New Mexico Association of Community Colleges. For
her essay, Aves was asked to write about how a liberal arts education
will influence her future chosen career. She received $500 for her
winning essay. Aves transferred to ENMU-Roswell from New Mexico
State University, and is now completing her core classes. She intends
to pursue a career in optometry so that, in her words, she “can
enable people to see a beautiful world even more clearly.”
She plans to transfer to the University of Houston next fall. According
to one of Aves’s instructors, Jennie Bower, who helped to
nominate her for the scholarship, Aves is making a huge sacrifice
for her education – driving to Roswell from her home in Carlsbad
three times a week. Aves said it’s worth it. “There
are more options here, more classes available. I want to succeed
in life and whatever I need to do I will do it. I think it’s
a great campus. The instructors really care and I’m learning
a lot,” she said. Aves said she would use her scholarship
money to buy books.
You might call them ENMU-Roswell’s version of the
Partridge Family. Tuku (pronounced Too-Koo) is a family
of musicians who will perform in a free concert in the Performing
Arts Center on campus Saturday, Nov. 13 at 6:30 p.m. The public
is invited to attend. The group’s drummer, Andrew Sheafor,
21, of Wellington, Colorado, is a freshman in ENMU-Roswell’s
Special Services program for students with disabilities. He is studying
to be a childcare attendant and also has a strong interest in music.
Andrew’s siblings, including his twin brother, and father
are traveling to Roswell just for the opportunity to play together
again. The group has recorded a CD, entitled “Where the Sun
Lingers” for Unbroken Records. Tuku's musical vision can be
traced back to strong family ties. Twin brothers, Ben and Andy Sheafor,
anchor the group. Ben is Tuku's true front man, handling vocals,
acoustic guitar as well as songwriting duties. Andy is the group's
drummer, keeping the rhythms snappy while remaining sensitive to
the rest of the music. Younger sister, Megan Sheafor adds distinctive
vocal harmonies and keyboards. Bassist and close family friend,
Jeremy Justus, is also part of the group as a vocalist and songwriter.
The newest member of the group is father, Chris Sheafor, who has
switched from bass to lead guitar, adding the finishing touches
to Tuku's sound. Tuku's semi-electric acoustic rock music is full
of uplifting melodies, fresh harmonies, irresistible rhythms and
personally expressive lyrics. But more than that, Tuku's sound is
energetic and youthful, driven by a musical vision shared by all
the members of the band.

TechTips
Helpful Hints for using ENMU Technology (courtesy of ITS Computing)
Computing
Word series – Did you know that you can combine several word
documents into a single document. To combine several relatively
simple documents into a single document, repeat the following procedure
until all of the individual documents have been combined. The original
documents are unaffected by this procedure.
1. Start a new, blank document.
2. Choose File from the Insert menu.
3. Browse to the document you want to insert.
4. Select the document, then click Insert.
5. Usually, you will want to insert a page break after each file
you insert: Choose Break from the Insert menu, select Page break,
then click OK.
Some attributes of the documents you insert after the first one
may be lost (e.g., margins, headers, and footers). Once you get
all the documents combined, you can work on finishing up document
formatting details, page numbering, etc
Outlook series – Color-code your calendar
In your Outlook Calendar, you can use colors to help you manage
your appointments. For example, you can choose colors with predefined
labels such as "Personal", "Needs Preparation,"
or "Must Attend;" or, you can create your own labels.
Here's how:
To color an appointment or meeting with a predefined label:
1. Click Calendar.
2. Right-click an appointment or meeting, point to Label on the
shortcut menu, and then click a color-coded label in the list. (To
remove the color from the appointment or meeting, in the Label list,
click None.)
To create your own colored label:
1. Click Calendar.
2. Right-click an appointment or meeting, point to Label on the
shortcut menu, and then click Edit Labels.
3. Pick the color you want to rename, type in your new label name,
and then click OK.
DAT file version update – To check that your computer is up-to-date
with the most current versions of virusscan software, locate the
blue and white shield with a red “V” in it by your system
clock on the bottom right side of your screen and click on it with
the right mouse button. Then choose “About VirusScan Enterprise”
in the pull-down box. There are two things to look for; one is the
“Virus Definitions” which should be at 4404 and the
other is the “Scan Engine” which should be at 4.3.20.
If either one is not displaying the above versions, please contact
the Helpdesk at 562.4357 for assistance.
