ABE Program Receives $30,000 Grant – The Adult
Basic Education Program at ENMU-Ruidoso has been awarded a $30,000
Workplace Literacy grant today by the New Mexico Commission on Higher
Education. The purpose of the award is to underwrite the costs of
English as a Second Language and basic literacy skills for an estimated
fifty workers in hospitality/tourism, construction trades or retail
business across Lincoln County. Partners in the project include
the Ruidoso Valley Chamber of Commerce, the Lincoln County Homebuilders
Association, and Wal-Mart of Ruidoso Downs [details].

ENMU Chapter
of Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society and the Sigma Xi Distinguished
Lecturer Program Presenting Talk on October 14 –
Dr. Gordon Orians of the University of Washington, Department of
Zoology, will speak in the Becky Sharp Auditorium in the College
of Business at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 14 about "Industrial
Development and Alaska’s North Slope Environment." The
lecture, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by Eastern's
Chapter of Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society and the Sigma
Xi Distinguished Lecturer Program. Dr. Orians recently chaired an
National Academy of Sciences/National Research Council committee
on "Cumulative Environmental Effects of Oil and Gas Activities
on Alaska's North Slope," whose report was published by the
National Academy Press in 2003. Dr. Orians is a member of the National
Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
His honors include the Eminent Ecologists Award from the Ecological
Society of America and the Distinguished Service Award from the
American Institute of Biological Sciences. For more information,

Events from the College of Fine Arts
Trio Encantada
Trio Encantada will present a faculty recital titled "From
Commission to Performance: A Behind-the-Scenes Look at the Creative
Process" at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct.. 12 in Buchanan Hall in
the Music Building at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales.
Trio Encantada features ENMU music professors Drs. Tracy Carr, oboe;
Jeanie Ornellas, lyric soprano; and Mark Dal Porto, pianist and
composer. The group will perform Dr. Dal Porto's "Song of the
Night for Oboe, Voice and Piano." Dr. Dal Porto will discuss
how he came to compose the piece, highlight each movement, and then
demonstrate at the piano the cyclic structure of the work as a whole.

GEAR UP Conducting
Leadership Retreat – GEAR UP will conduct
the Leadership Retreat for county 11th and 12th grades. The college

Wins Homecoming Window Decorating Contest –
The Campus Bookstore won the Community Window Display Contest for
Homecoming. Bookstore director Jessie Luna reports that his employees
worked very hard on the project. Congratulations to the Campus Bookstore.

Dr. Michael F. Shaughnessy
has just completed guest editing a special issue of Gifted Education
International. The journal included papers by Professor Joan Freeman
of England, Dr. Kirsi Tirri of Finland, Dr. Kimmo Lehtonen of Finland,
Dr. Sal Mendaglio of Canada, and Dr. Meredith Greene, Dr. Sylvia
Rimm, and Dr. Dorothy Sisk of America.
Annual Peanut Valley
Festival Slated for October 23-24 – It’s
just about peanut harvest time and that means it’s almost
time for the 31st annual Peanut Valley Festival.
The arts and crafts extravaganza takes place from 9 a.m. to 6:30
p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 23, and from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Oct.
24, inside of the Campus Union Building on the Eastern New Mexico

Defensive Driving Offered
– The 6-hour defensive driving course is being offered on
Oct. 19-20 in the Zia Room. The times will be from 8:30-11:30 a.m.
on both days. Please note that you must attend all 6 hours in order
to receive credit for the course. Defensive driving is required
for anyone who plans to drive a vehicle for university business
and be covered under the university's insurance. To sign up call

Debaters Listed in National
Rankings – The first round of the Cross-Examination
Debate Association (CEDA) and American Forensics Association (AFA)
debate team ranks reveal that the Eastern New Mexico University
Greyhounds are ranking 13th and 15th in the country under the two
different rankings systems. ENMU holds a comfortable lead in the
regional rankings as well, placing first in both the Rocky Mountain
CEDA Region and AFA District 9. District 9 includes all participating
colleges and universities in Colorado, Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, New
Mexico and the University of Texas at El Paso.

ENMU-Roswell
Presenting Free Magic Show – Eastern New Mexico
University-Roswell will present a special performance of “The
Magic of Virgil” on Monday, Oct. 11 at 6:30 p.m. in the Performing
Arts Center on campus. The event is free and open to the public.
The magician is currently performing at the Eastern New Mexico State
Fair, but will perform an expanded illusion show in the Performing
Arts Center on Oct. 11. University officials encourage all ages
to attend. A show will also be presented to students at ENMU-Roswell’s
partner school, Sunset Elementary, at 8:30 a.m. on Oct. 11.

Campaign Ready to Kickoff – Members of the
Roosevelt County United Way are excited to announce the kickoff
of the 2004 campaign season. Our goal this year is to raise $60,000
for the agencies of Roosevelt County. Roosevelt County United Way
is a community-based organization that funds local agencies such
as The Literacy Council, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Habitat for Humanity
and many others. This season, we will once again be seeking your
support. Eastern New Mexico University has always been a strong
supporter of the United Way, and with your support we want this

Provide Escort Service for Students – If a
student needs an escort to their car, dorm or classroom, ENMU has
an escort service available during the hours of darkness. For escort

How to Reach
Campus Police After Hours – To reach the Campus
Police Officer on duty after 5 p.m., before 8 a.m. and all day Saturday
and Sunday you can call the officer on his cell phone number at
760.2945. If for some reason you are unable to reach the officer
on that number, call the Portales Police Department at 356.4404
extension 0. The dispatcher will then send a Campus Officer to your
destination to assist you.

– One of just a handful of 30 minute, professional newscasts
produced at the university level, News 3 airs live Monday through
Thursday at 5 p.m. on KENW-TV, Channel 3 in Portales. News 3 New
Mexico is written, produced and reported by student writers, reporters,
producers and production professionals from Eastern New Mexico University.
Policy Regarding
Using University Facilities to Promote Political/Religious Partisanship
on Campus – University facilities may not
be used in any manner to involve the University as endorsing a partisan,
political, sectarian, or religious position. This includes posters,
flyers, etc., that are partisan in nature in any University facility,
including offices.
ENMU-Roswell
Foundation Hosting Golf Tournament – There
is still time to sign up for the ENMU-Roswell Foundation Scholarship
Golf Tournament. The event will begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Oct.
16 at the Spring River Golf Course. The cost for the four-person
scramble tournament is $50 per player. Teams should have a minimum
total handicap of 40. The fee includes lunch, promotional bags for
each player, and awards for the top three teams, the longest drive,
and closest to the pin. Additional prize drawings will also be held
with items donated from a number of local businesses. Players will
also have an opportunity to win a new car, a vacation package, a
vehicle service contract or a new set of golf clubs.
Proceeds from the golf tournament will benefit College Access Program
Scholarships (CAPS). CAPS will give every student in Chaves County
schools (public or private) the opportunity to attend ENMU-Roswell
after high school graduation. Players are urged to sign up by Oct.
9. Hole sponsorships, team sponsorships, and corporate sponsorships
are also being sought. A sign up sheet and more information is available

Register for University
Parking Permit Online – It's that time of
year that all vehicles on campus need to have 2004-2005 parking
permits. The University Police has a way to register vehicle(s)
on-line. The link to the registration form is: https://ad05.enmu.edu:7177/prod/plsql/parking.p_ApplicationForm.
Read the instructions on the application and be sure to fill in
all blanks. If not, this may delay your parking permits from being
delivered.
ENMU Offering CLEP Testing Program for
Military Military service members can now take
CLEP exams, without paying the exam fee (normally $55), at Eastern
New Mexico University. Service members will still need to pay a
registration fee of approximately $15 to ENMU. CLEP is also available
to military dependents and civilians who are interested in taking
CLEP exams but these candidates are responsible for paying the exam
fee of $65. In Portales, New Mexico candidates can take CLEP exams
in Room 204 of the SAS Building at ENMU. Testing is available: Oct.
12, 13, 26, 27; Nov. 9, 10, 23; and Dec. 14, 15, 21, 22. The tests
are administered at 8 a.m., 10 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. on Tuesdays
and Wednesdays. Candidates can make an appointment by calling the
Testing Center at 505.562.2280.

At present, the organization is raising funds in order to send students
to the National Association of Bilingual Education Convention which
will take place late January of 2005 in San Antonio, Texas. The
organization expects to collect $3,000 to send six students to the
Convention. The winner for the BESO raffle was Mr. Marshall Stinnett.

Helpful Hints for using ENMU Technology (courtesy of ITS Computing)
Computing
Word series – View Multiple Pages in Word
Isn't it great how you can see several pages at a time in print
preview? Did you know you could also view multiple pages when working
in print layout view in Word? Just add the Multiple Pages button
to the Standard toolbar. Here's how:
1. On the File menu, click Print Preview.
2. Right-click the toolbar and click Standard.
3. Right-click the toolbar again and click Customize.
4. Holding down the CTRL key, drag a copy of the Multiple Pages
button from the Print Preview toolbar to the Standard toolbar.
5. Close Print Preview.
Now the Multiple Pages button appears on the Standard toolbar in
print layout view. Just click it and select how many pages you want
to view.
Outlook series – To create an attachment
via drag-and-drop in Outlook
This is an easier way to add an attachment to an e-mail on Outlook.
• Open the folder containing the file you want to attach in
Windows Explorer.
• Make sure your Inbox is open in Outlook.
• Grab the file from Windows Explorer with your mouse and
drop it on your open Inbox.
Outlook automatically starts a new email message with the file attached.
This works with multiple files as well.
DAT file version update – To check that your computer is up-to-date
with the most current versions of virusscan software, locate the
blue and white shield with a red “V” in it by your system
clock on the bottom right side of your screen and click on it with
the right mouse button. Then choose “About VirusScan Enterprise”
in the pull-down box. There are two things to look for; one is the
“Virus Definitions” which should be at 4397 and the
other is the “Scan Engine” which should be at 4.3.20.
If either one is not displaying the above versions, please contact
the Helpdesk at 562.4357 for assistance.

Traditional
Tamales 101 with a New Twist – Join Carmen
Matthews, Saturday, Nov. 13, 9 a.m.-3 p.m., FCS-98 for this continued
series and learn how to make the traditional Mexican tamales with
a twist of new flavors. Participants are encouraged to bring a brown
bag lunch to class. Due to food purchases and preparation for specific
numbers, this class must be prepaid with no refunds issued to non-attendees.
Registration is $15 with a $10 lab fee, payable to the instructor.

Genealogy-Discover Your Roots
– join genealogist Jenny Blaylock and learn how to research
your family history, Mondays, Nov. 1 and 8, 6:30-8:30 p.m., UCC-204.

Paralegal – an intensive, six-week course
held Tuesday and Thursday evenings 6-9:30 p.m. and Saturdays, 9

Ristra Making –
Come to class Wednesday, Oct. 27, 6:30-8:30 p.m., COB-138 with your
supply of ripe red chilies, clothes hanger, wire cutters, kite string
and scissors and learn “a tying of the chilies” with
Fred Chino who has been making ristras since childhood. Your chilies
should be fresh and picked with the stem remaining as well as allowed
to “cure” for 24 hours before class. Cornhusks and raffia
are optional. The fee is $16. Please register by Oct. 22.
Yoga – relax and stretch Wednesdays through
Dec. 1, 7-7:50 p.m., GA-11 with Lisa Moyer. There will be no class
Nov. 24, Thanksgiving week. Averaging approximately $3 per class,
a proportionate payment to pay through the last class can be made
at Extended Learning, Quay Hall, Room 106.
All About Hummingbirds – Join Dan True and
learn how to attract, feed and encourage nesting of these feathered

Busy Gourmet Does Salads on the
Side – Jan Hauptmann will conduct a one-night, hands-on

Pasta Fruit Salad and Kielbasa Salad as well as learning a quick

Quilted Medallion with 9º
Wedge Ruler – Judy Mathews, Patchwork House, Clovis
will teach how to make a standalone medallion for quilt or wall
hanging with a 9º wedge ruler. The required ruler can be purchased
at the Patchwork House at 10% discount. Sewing machines can be provided
although most students prefer to bring their own. It’s your
choice for lunch-either take a short break or bring your own, Saturday,
Nov. 6, 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m., FCS-100. The fee is $30. Please be sure
to ask for your supply list when registering by Nov. 3.
SHINE-Providing Exceptional Customer
Service – Bob LaHue, MorningStar Training, offers
this workshop twice for your convenience focusing on vital customer
service issues and motivational employee training, Saturdays, 1-5
p.m., Sept. 25 or Nov. 20, COB-113. The fee is $50 with a $5 each
discount for five or more from one organization. Please register
by Sept. 22 or Nov. 17, respectively.
Swimming – For ages four and above, two week
rotations Monday-Thursday with Red Cross certified lifeguard Devin
McMaster, 4-4:50 p.m., Natatorium. Rotation number one, Sept. 13-23;
rotation two is Oct 4-14, rotation three is Oct. 25-Nov. 4 and number
four is Nov. 8-18. Register by Friday noon prior to each rotation.
Fee $40. Includes Red Cross certification card for level passed.
Aqua Aerobics –
Alisha Eldridge will offer 12, two-day rotations, Mondays and Wednesdays,
Sept. 13-Dec. 8, 7-7:50 p.m.. Natatorium,. The fee is $8 per week
or receive a $6 discount by prepaying $90. No classes on Nov. 22
and 24 during Thanksgiving holiday.
ONEStroke Painting (tm) –
Technique of folk art painting taught by Kris Cranford that enhances
almost anything, from glassware and pottery to furniture and walls.
May take one or both classes, in the COB Building, Room 130, for
$20 each with complete supply kits furnished and payable to the
instructor. Basic Technique I will be offered Tuesday, Sept. 14,
6-9 p.m., with a kit fee of $22. Basic Technique II will create
a design on a clay flowerpot, and is Tuesday, Oct. 12, from 6-9
p.m., with a kit fee of $18 for Basic Technique I students and $25
for new students (Contains an additional basic brush). Register
by Sept. 9 or Oct. 12.

Basics – A “what I always wanted to
ask” 10-week course titled “Life with God” covering
the basics of Christianity will start at 7 p.m. at Faith in Christ
Lutheran Church on Sunday, Oct 17. FICLC is located at 1024 W 14th
Lane. Their new pastor, Gary Piepkorn, will lead the course. Refreshments
will be provided. Open to all. More info: 356.2510. It will include
all the basic questions about God, Life, Heaven, Sin, Creation,
the Bible, Prayer, and a bunch more of those things that you always

Meeting
The New Mexico Alliance for Minority Participation
student group, Scientists of Color will have their
monthly meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 13, from 5-6 p.m. in JWLA 127.
Topics of discussion include internships, undergraduate research
and scholarship opportunities. Nathan Padilla will present his poster
on enhancement of tetracycline and ciprofloxacin resistances in
enteric dairy soil bacteria by salycilate and orange oil. For more
