appointments have now been made, committee chairs are reminded to
convene their committees (if they have not already done so) to review
their charge, elect a chair (if needed), and set meeting times.
Committee chairs are reminded that approved minutes of committee
meetings should be sent via email to Deborah.Bentley@enmu.edu

the Office of Planning and Analysis at extension 2315 if you have
any questions regarding committees or university governance.
Software Clearinghouse
Offering New Titles – The New Mexico Educational
Software Clearing House (NMESCH), located in the Center for Teaching
Excellence (CTE) at ENMU, is offering for review two new educational
software programs: Cross Country USA 2 and Auditory Memory for Quick
Stories. If the following reviews interest you, come check out the
software for yourself at the CTE.
Cross Country USA 2 is an educational software simulation game,
produced by Ingenuity Works Inc., aimed at teaching basic facts
about the United States, map reading and interpretation, and budgeting
skills. Students participate in one or two player games as truck
drivers responsible for delivering goods to places across the country
given budget constraints, and limited pick-up and delivery options.
All in all, Cross Country USA 2 accomplishes its educational objectives
successfully, and is fun to play too. The game can be useful from
K-12 grades, and would recommend it to teachers looking for a good
classroom resource with these educational needs.
Auditory Memory for Quick Stories is an interactive program for
improving auditory memory and comprehensive skills. The CD-ROM and
Reproductive Workbook contain delightful and engaging short stories
with follow-up comprehensive questions. This software accomplishes
its goal of improving auditory memory and comprehension skills through
drill and practice of listening and understanding skills. In a nutshell,
this software is recommended for the teaching of elementary school
kids auditory memory skills.

Use of University
Facilities Clarified – Earlier this
semester I sent out an e-mail quoting the University policy for
use of facilities, which read: "University facilities may not
be used in any manner to involve the university as endorsing a partisan,
political, sectarian, or religious position." I interpreted
this policy to include private offices. Since sending that e-mail,
I have consulted with the University's legal counsel and she has
a different interpretation than I. She believes that private offices
are not covered under this policy and individuals are free to post
signs of any nature in their offices. The attorney does state that
we cannot post in hallways or windows, nor can we distribute in
any fashion, material that would fall under the definition of partisan,
political, sectarian or religious. I'm sorry for any discomfort
caused by my misunderstanding. – Steven Gamble, President
Speech
and Hearing Clinic Conducting Free Screenings
– The ENMU Speech and Hearing
Clinic will conduct free hearing screenings for children and adults

as The Literacy Council, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Habitat for Humanity
and many others. This season, we will once again be seeking your
support. Eastern New Mexico University has always been a strong
supporter of the United Way, and with your support we want this
year to be better than ever. In the coming weeks, you will be hearing
more about us and the agencies we support, as well as receiving

a special thanks to Dr. Gamble for his endorsement and encouragement
in our endeavors. Together we can make a difference.

TechTips
Helpful Hints for using ENMU Technology (courtesy of ITS Computing)
Computing
Word series – A faster way than the Thesaurus to find synonyms
You can see a list of synonyms by:
1. Right-clicking on a word.
2. Then choose Synonyms from the menu.
Unfortunately, some types of formatting disable this feature. For
example, if the word is in a bullet or numbered list item, the synonym
option does not appear when you right-click.
Outlook series – Delay delivery of a message
Did you ever want to create a message and not send it until a later
date? Outlook has that ability.
1. Create a message as usual.
2. Double click Options on the toolbar.
3. Click on Options again (depending on version you may not need
to do this).
4. Under Delivery options, select the Do not deliver before check
box, and then click the delivery date and time you want.
DAT file version update – To check that your computer is up-to-date
with the most current versions of virusscan software, locate the
blue and white shield with a red “V” in it by your system
clock on the bottom right side of your screen and click on it with
the right mouse button. Then choose “About VirusScan Enterprise”
in the pull-down box. There are two things to look for; one is the
“Virus Definitions” which should be at 4399 and the
other is the “Scan Engine” which should be at 4.3.20.
If either one is not displaying the above versions, please contact
the Helpdesk at 562.4357 for assistance.
Telephony
Extended Absence Greeting:
Are you going to be away from your office for an extended period
of time and will not be listening to messages? If so, record an
Extended Absence Greeting to let your callers know when you will
return to your office. With this type of greeting, your mailbox
will not accept messages from callers so you should suggest another
contact name and number who can offer immediate assistance. This
greeting temporarily overrides the personal greeting.
To activate:
Dial into the voice mail system: 4200 or 562.4200 (from off-campus).
From the Ready prompt, press 4 7 and begin recording.
When you are finished recording, press the # sign to accept and
turn the greeting on.
To deactivate:
Dial into the voice mail system: 4200 or 562.4200 (from off-campus).
From the Ready prompt, press 4 2.
NOTE: Your personal greeting will have to be re-recorded at this
point.
If you have a tip you would like to share with us please send it
to: ENMU.TechTips@enmu.edu
