ENMU-Roswell
Receives GEAR UP Grant – The Adult Basic Education
GEAR UP Program at ENMU-Roswell has been awarded a $95,000 grant
for the 2004-05 school year. The grant will be used to continue
tutoring programs at the Roswell Boys and Girls Club, Mountain View
Middle School and Mesa Middle School. “We are very proud to
be able to continue this program in Roswell, and recognize that
ENMU has been a strong supporter of the middle school students in
your area,” said Kate Smith, GEAR UP Coordinator in Santa
Fe. GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate
Programs) tutors visit the schools throughout the school year, helping
and mentoring students who are not performing well academically.
GEAR UP tutors also promote higher education, encouraging students
to graduate from high school and go to college. During the school
year, students tour the ENMU-Roswell campus and staff members speak
to students and their parents about the college enrollment and financial
aid processes. GEAR UP tutors also promote the six pillars of Character
Counts! in all their activities. Hilda Pacheco, Assistant Director,
Adult Basic Education, said the GEAR UP program works. “Through
our testing, we see students making big improvements and their attitude
toward school changes too. I love working with the schools and keeping
track of our students because we are so proud of them. The program
is making a big difference,” she said. Pacheco said through
the summer programs alone, 500 students were served through GEAR
UP and more will be served this year.

Medical Leave Bank Policies Explained
What is the Medical Leave Bank?
The medical leave bank is a pool of hours to which any regular employee
who earns medical and/or annual leave may donate some of their accumulated
leave hours. The purpose of the medical leave bank is to provide
medical leave to contributors who have suffered an unplanned personal
illness, injury, disability or quarantine and who have exhausted
their compensatory time and medical and annual leave balances.
Who is eligible to join?
Any regular ENMU employee who earns medical and annual leave and
has a current medical leave balance of at least six days (hours
are prorated for part-time employees) as of July 31, 2004, is eligible
to participate in the Bank.
How much do I have to contribute?
Initial contribution is three days if you work full-time; hours
are prorated if you work part-time. With prior written notice, the
medical leave bank committee may request additional hours from the
membership if the hours in the bank fall below one day per member.
Who makes decisions on request for time from the bank?
The medical leave bank is administered by a five-member committee
appointed by the President to review requests for withdrawal of
medical leave from the bank.
How do I enroll?
The medical leave bank policy, enrollment and request forms are
available from the office of Personnel Services, Administration
Building, Room 207, or by calling the office at 562.2115. Return
completed form to Personnel Services, Station 21, by Nov. 30. Members
who have been in the Medical Leave Bank for 30 calendar days are
eligible to apply for days from the Bank.
Note: If you are already in the Bank, additional contributions are
not needed unless notified by the committee.

President Announces
Search to Begin For Vice President for Academic Affairs
– Due to the retirement of Dr. K. Paul Jones at the conclusion
of the 2004-05 year, the university will begin a search for a vice
president for Academic Affairs early in the fall semester. It is
anticipate that a screening committee will be formed by mid-September
and a formal job announcement will be advertised nationally in early
October.
Search to
Be Conducted for Dean of Education and Technology

starting Sept. 1. Appointments are available by calling 505.624.7221
or 505.562.2342.
Clarification About Taxes on Tuition
Waivers – Several employees who have a bachelor's
degree have expressed a desire to sign up for a Wellness course
under the tuition waiver but are turned off by the misunderstanding
they have to pay taxes on the tuition waiver. Please be advised
that this is no longer true due to a new admission category established
over a year ago – post-baccalaureate admission. Anyone with
a bachelor's degree who wants to enroll only in undergraduate courses
will be admitted under post-baccalaureate admission. You will not
be taxed for any tuition waiver for an undergraduate class. Also,
if you are paying for an undergraduate course, you will be charged
at the undergraduate, not the graduate, rate.
But please note that no one in this category can take a graduate
course. If you want to take a graduate course, you have to receive
graduate admission. You will be charged graduate rates for all of
your courses, including undergraduate courses, and any tuition waiver
will be taxable.

TechTips
Helpful Hints for using ENMU Technology (courtesy of ITS Computing)
Computing
Last week we learned how to receive updates to our computer systems
through the web browser accessing the Microsoft Updates web site.
There is a much easier way to receive and apply the latest updates.
It is done through the Windows “Automatic Updates” feature
that will keep your computer up-to-date automatically with the latest
updates and enhancements. You no longer have to search for critical
updates and information; Windows delivers them directly to your
computer. Windows recognizes when you are online and uses your Internet
connection to search for downloads from the Windows Update Web site.
An icon appears in the status area by the system clock each time
new updates are available. You will also periodically see a message
appear above the icon stating that there are updates that need to
be applied. Double click on the icon and follow the installation
screens. It is very important that you apply the updates when they
arrive on your system. Doing so will protect your system from the
many daily virus attacks that attempt to infect your system. If
you have any questions concerning the Automatic Updates feature,
call the Helpdesk at 562.4357. They can assist you with making sure
this feature is configured and functioning properly.
To check that your computer is up-to-date with the most current
versions of virusscan software, locate the blue and white shield
with a red “V” in it by your system clock on the bottom
right side of your screen and click on it with the right mouse button.
Then choose “About VirusScan Enterprise” in the pull-down
box. There are two things to look for; one is the “Virus Definitions”
which should be at 4389 and the other is the “Scan Engine”
which should be at 4.3.20. If either one is not displaying the above
versions, please contact the Helpdesk at 562.4357 for assistance.
