Employee Tuition Waiver
Policy – The university has issued a new policy
regarding the employee tuition waiver program. The intent of this
new policy is to clarify the procedures to be applied when an employee
or their spouse is taking a course under this waiver program. Should
you have any questions, please contact Scott Smart at extension
2600 or scott.smart@enmu.edu.
As a benefit of employment, ENMU will pay the tuition for one course
per semester (fall, spring, eight-week summer session) for full-time
employees and retirees. The maximum tuition waiver for this course
is not to exceed 4 credit hours. If a lab is connected to a lecture,
this combination will be considered to be one course. No other combinations
are permissible. Tuition will also be waived for employees enrolling
in the university wellness program for 1 to 2 credits.
University employees are allowed to take one course during the regular
work day. Approval from their immediate supervisor is required to
insure that appropriate office coverage is maintained. Hours missed
while the employee is taking a course during the normal workday
must be made up. Vacation and comp time cannot be used to make up
these hours.
If a course is offered during the employee's normal workday as well
as outside of the employee's normal workday, the employee must take
the course outside of their normal workday.
Requests for exceptions to the "one course during the normal
workday" rule must submitted through the area supervisor and
approved by the President. Per New Mexico state law, employees are
allowed to enroll in up to 11 undergraduate credits or 8 graduate
credits in any semester. For purposes of this policy, "summer
semester" is defined as the period between spring commencement
and the first day of the fall semester.
This policy is applicable to regular full-time employees and retirees.
This benefit is transferable to the employee's spouse, should the
employee not use the waiver. The waiver applies only to tuition.
All other fees are payable by the employee/spouse.

Employees Invited to
Participate in Safe Space Program – Alliance
invites all faculty and staff members to take part in the Safe Space
program. Safe Space members mark their offices/workplaces as "safe"
for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) and other alternatively
identified students. Alliance will provide laminated signs for participating
faculty and staff members.
Alliance will provide a short (approximately one hour) orientation
session prior to participation. The session will arm participants
with strategies for intervening in anti-LGBT bias and for being
a supportive ally when someone comes out to them. Alliance will
ask participants to sign a working agreement in which they affirm
their support and affirmation of the identity of their GLBT students.
Individual and group orientation sessions will begin immediately.
To register, please contact Tracy Riley at tracy.riley@enmu.edu
or by phone at 693.7082.
According to a 2003 campus climate survey published by the National
Gay and Lesbian Task Force, fully one-fifth of LGBT students fear
for their physical safety. Over half conceal their sexual identity
in order to avoid harassment or intimidation. The visible presence
of allies to whom students can turn for support can change the school
atmosphere for the student who feels marginalized. A supportive
and friendly climate enhances academic performance, school experience,
and mental and emotional health of the students who experience it.
For more information, please contact Tracy Riley at tracy.riley@enmu.edu
or by phone at 693.7082.
Alliance Sets Day of
Silence – Alliance at Eastern New Mexico University
asks all students and faculty to join in the Day of Silence, Wednesday,
April 13, 2005. Gay and lesbian students will take a stand with
their straight student, faculty and staff allies against harassment
and discrimination.
Over 150 ENMU students have already vowed to remain silent April
13 to protest the discrimination, harassment and abuse in effect,
the silencing faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning
people and their allies.
On the Day of Silence, rather than speaking, participants hand out
"speaking cards" explaining their reasons for remaining
silent throughout the day. Alliance will provide red "Day of
Silence" t-shirts to the first 200 participants.
At 6 p.m., participants will gather at the patio of the Campus Union
Building for a Breaking the Silence Event. Student voices will break
loose at the 20-30 minute event in speech, song and dramatic recital.
Everyone is welcome to attend.
Sign up for the Day in the CUB lobby on Tuesday and Wednesday, April
12 and 13. We would love to answer any questions you may have. Contact
Chris Keim at 714.0478 or Tracy Riley at 693.7082, or e-mail tracy.riley@enmu.edu.
(Note: Participants are requested to speak if participation is required
during classes or contact their professor before the Day to discuss
alternative ways to participate in class. Instructors who wish to
remain silent during the Day are encouraged to develop creative
lesson plans or to speak during classes as usual. Please do not
skip or cancel classes due to the Day. If you stay home, no one
will know you were silent.)

Many of you know we have launched a CET team for the Relay for Life.
There are a number of fundraisers underway and we invite you to
contribute in anyway you can to our team and to this worthy cause.

If you sponsor a student group that engages in community service
this may be a good project for them. Donations both large and small
are welcomed.

and Governance Policies and Procedures Manual (called by some “The
Big Grey Book”) is now ready to begin the campus review process.
All members of the University community are invited to review and
comment on several excerpts from the Board of Regents Manual. To

Anyone is welcome to attend and provide comments in person or submit
them via email to Patrice.Caldwell@enmu.edu or in writing to University

Walt Disney Recruiting
on Campus – The Walt Disney World® College
Program Recruiters will be on campus Thursday, April 14, offering
students of all majors and college levels the opportunity to take
part in a paid internship for the fall 2005 semester. This is a
great opportunity to be part of the Disney magic and start building
a strong résumé. On Thursday, April 14, at 2 p.m.
in the Sandia Room in the Campus Union Building. Attendance is mandatory
at the presentation to interview for the program. If you would like
to have a Disney Representative speak to you, please contact Justin

ENMU Telephone
System Upgrade – The ENMU telephone system
has been upgraded to the latest software revision available. Below
are some important differences that the user may immediately notice:
When calling from a digital telephone, the display will show the
call is ‘deflected’ (rather than “diverted”)
if the called number has a diversion profile set up on it. If a
call to your extension can be rolled over to more than one phone
number on busy/no answer, you will notice the words ‘profile
1’ on the display of a digital telephone, or you will hear
a ‘stuttered dial tone’ on an analog telephone. This
message tells you that your telephone will be able to divert to
more than one point if your number is busy or does not answer. On
digital telephones with a two-line display, the ‘profile 1’
message has replaced the date and time. The date and time will reappear
when the handset is lifted and stay on the display until the handset
is placed back on the cradle. When the new software was installed,
all default settings on the telephones were restored. Anything that
was programmed into a telephone from the keypad will need to be
set up again. For example: On a digital telephone, if there is a
second access key, the key will need to be pressed to reactivate
this function. On a digital telephone, the ring tone will need to
be reprogrammed if it was changed from the default ring. To do this,
press the ‘program’ key, press any number 0 through
9 and press the ‘program’ key once again when you have
chosen the ring you like. On a digital or analog telephone, if there
was a ‘follow me’ diversion created, it will need to
be reprogrammed. If you have any questions on setting up a function
on your telephone, please log a call with the Helpdesk at 4357.
We appreciate your patience through this transition.

CURRY/ROOSEVELT COUNTY CASA
MARKS NATIONAL CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION AND AWARENESS MONTH BY
LIGHTING CANDLES OF HOPE
CLOVIS, NM—Every year, more than 380 children
are abused and neglected in Curry and Roosevelt Counties. To
raise awareness of alarming statistics like these, the Curry/Roosevelt
County CASA today announced it will host a Light Of Hope Candlelight
Ceremony at both the Curry and Roosevelt County Courthouse.
Curry/Roosevelt CASA, a non-profit organization that trains
community volunteers to speak for the best interests of abused
and neglected children in court, supports national efforts to
fight child abuse throughout the month of April, which is National
Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness Month (NCPAM).
This year’s events will help to kick off the several awareness
and educational activities across the country in April to recognize
National Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness Month. Curry/Roosevelt
County CASA hopes to encourage community members to come together
to shine their light at either event. The Roosevelt County Light
of Hope ceremony will be held at noon on Thursday, April 7 at
the Roosevelt County Courthouse lawn.
The Curry County Light of Hope ceremony will be
held at noon on Friday, April 8 at the Curry County Courthouse
lawn.
“Nothing touches your heart more than helping a child,”
said Catharine Johnson, CASA Program Coordinator. “And
helping a child who’s been abused or neglected will affect
you in ways you’d never expect.” “Here in
our communities, the future lies with our children, and they
each deserve the possibility of being brought up in secure,
loving permanent homes.”
Curry/Roosevelt County CASA is a member of the National Court
Appointed Special Advocate Association, more than 900 local
community programs that recruit and train citizen volunteers
to advocate for the rights of abused and neglected and abused
children. “Every day, our volunteers work to bring hope
into the lives of children who need hope the most. That is why
we are lighting candles in parks and courthouses across the
county, to remind us all that there is always hope for a child,”
said Michael Piraino, CEO, National CASA Association.
For more information on The Light of Hope Ceremonies in Curry
and Roosevelt County, and the CASA program, or how you can be
