ENMU Establishes New
Major in Biochemistry – Eastern New Mexico
University has established a new major in biochemistry beginning
in the fall of 2005. The new degree leading to a bachelor of science
is an interdisciplinary major designed to prepare students to enter
either graduate school or the growing high-tech job markets in biomedical
research, pharmaceuticals, and other areas combining chemistry and
biology.
The curriculum is supported by modern scientific facilities in ENMU’s
Biological Structure-Function Core Facility, funded by National
Institutes of Health BRIN/INBRe, and housed in Roosevelt Hall. Available
facilities include cell culture, fermentation, protein FPLC, single
and multidimensional electrophoresis, isotope counting, UV/Vis and
fluorescence spectroscopy, and state-of-the-art imaging and microscopy.
According to Dr. Newton Hilliard, assistant professor of chemistry,
biochemistry majors have opportunities for hands-on training in
these facilities during both classroom and student research projects.
Research training opportunities exist in areas ranging from proteomics
to biological electron transfer. In addition, the biochemistry major
is a part of the BS/MS “fast-track” program in chemistry.
This program allows qualified students to acquire both the BS and
MS degrees in a much shorter time than would occur in more traditional
programs.
For more information, call Dr. Hilliard at 505.562.2463.

New Mexico Attorney
General Coming to Campus on Thursday, April 21 –
New Mexico Attorney General Patricia Madrid and the Century Council
will be on campus in the Faculty Lounge of the Campus Union Building
at 1 p.m. on April 21 to give a presentation on alcohol. “This
Alcohol program is aimed towards college students called Alcohol
101+,” says Karen Roach from ENMU student health services.
In 1978 Patricia Madrid became the first woman elected to the district
court bench in New Mexico. In 1998 she became New Mexico's 29th
Attorney General, New Mexico’s first woman Attorney General.
In 2002 she was re elected to a second term. As the top law enforcement
officer in the state, Attorney General Madrid has placed priority
on violent crime prosecution. One of her first actions as Attorney
General was the establishment of a Capital Litigation Unit to provide
assistance to district attorneys statewide in the prosecution of
violent crimes, particularly death penalty cases. This unit brought
together some of the best and most experienced violent crimes prosecutors
in the state. Attorney General Madrid is currently Chairwoman of
the Western Conference of Attorneys General, an organization that
focuses on energy, environment and Indian gaming issues.
Since taking office she has created two new task forces: Underage
Drinking and the Committee on Metamphetamine Abuse. This appointment
further empowers the Attorney General to continue her efforts to
improve and protect the rights and the lives of New Mexicans through
collaborative action with her fellow Attorney’s Generals.
Century Council is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to fighting
drunk driving and underage drinking. The Council develops and implements
innovative programs and public awareness campaigns and promotes
action through strategic partnerships. The Century Council promotes
responsible decision-making regarding drinking or non-drinking of
beverage alcohol and discourages all forms of irresponsible consumption
through education, communications, research, law enforcement and
other programs.
The presentation will be approximately one hour long with the option
to try the program immediately after on the computers that will
be provided. All who attend will receive a free copy of the Alcohol
101+ CD-ROM. For more information Contact Karen Roach at 505.562.2321
or Karen.Roach@enmu.edu.
Noted Author, Retired
from National Park Service, to Speak at ENMU – Bill
Dunmire, a noted author who is retired from the National Park Service,
will speak at Eastern New Mexico University on Monday, April 18,
at 7 p.m. in the Becky sharp Auditorium in the College of Business.
After 28 years with the National Park Service, Dunmire retired as
Superintendent of Carlsbad Caverns National Monument and the Guadalupe
Mountains National Park. He is now a full-time writer, lecturer,
and professional photographer, with recent research trips to Spain,
Mexico, and throughout the Southwest.
The free public program, sponsored by the Roosevelt County Museum
and supported by the New Mexico Council for the Humanities, will
be illustrated with slides taken during research field trips to
Spain, Mexico, and throughout the Southwest.
Dunmire’s illustrated talk tells the story of how plants and
foods made their way from Spain to the Southwest, especially colonial
New Mexico, and how native Indians brought the new crops and foods
into their own cultures. Our menus today connect back to those Hispanic
colonial times.
When plants, foods and agriculture from the Old World made their
way from Spain to Mexico up the El Camino Real with explorer Onate
to the colonial frontier in northern New Mexico, the Southwest would
be changed forever. Dunmire’s presentation will focus on the
positive contributions the Spanish colonizers and missionaries from
Columbus, to Cortes, to Onate made to New Mexico’s agricultural
heritage.
For more information, contact Dr. Donald Elder III at 562.2601.

History 322 Class to
Show What They Learned – The History 322 class
taught by Dr. Alex Garman, assistant professor of history at Eastern
New Mexico University, is having his students show what it was like
in medieval times on April 28 from 8 a.m. to 12 noon at the patio
area next to the Jack Williamson Liberal Arts Building. “The
students tell me that they enjoyed creating the projects,”
says Dr. Garman. “Each of the students had their own reasons
for their enjoyment.” Dr. Garman added that his students like
making weapons; another built a catapult. “The catapult is
3 feet long by 4 feet high and it will be demonstrated by firing
water balloons,” says Dr. Garman. The students will show foods
that were eaten during the Middle Ages. “The food will be
on display to show what people ate during that time period,”
says Dr. Garman. “The students could not afford to make enough
for everyone to sample it; at this point the students still have
not decided exactly what to make.” The showing of the Middle
Ages will include a show of wedded bliss. “The wedding will
be performed in a series of scenes with commentary made by the participants,”
says Dr. Garman. "This is the first time that I have taught
this class and so this is the first time that I have assigned a
project like this.”

Message from the President
Regarding Realigning Administrative Units –
I encourage you to look over this document and reply back to me
before Wednesday, April 27, with any concerns or comments you might
have. – Steve Gamble
Campus Police – Change in Reporting Line:
From VPSA to VPBA
Justification: Historically, Campus Police report to Student Affairs,
and many of their activities directly involve students. The Campus
Police have the authority to enforce all applicable laws, ordinances
and campus traffic regulations, and the authority to arrest offenders.
Officers are also called upon to work with Portales Police to cover
emergencies, investigate complaints of on-campus criminal activity
and, if requested, work closely with the District Attorney's Office
to ensure effective prosecution. Their duties of protecting campus
and enforcing law and policy align more appropriately with Business
Affairs.
KENW – Change in Reporting Line: From VPAA
to VPURES
Justification: In addition to KENW's continuing and vital role in
distance education and instructional television, the Broadcast Center
is a critical link to state-wide telecommunications and communication
media. While continuing its support of ENMU's academic programs,
KENW has a larger regional and statewide mission, one that requires
a close linkage with IT.
Athletics – Change in Reporting Line: From
President to VPSA
Justification: Team sports and the number of ENMU athletes have
increased dramatically. The wide range of athletic program management
issues require a great deal of time and energy. The president's
travel and off-campus appearances limit the time he has for program
oversight. The VPSA is well equipped to oversee these programs and
their finances, and to assure a positive experience for students.
Faculty Resource Center – Change in Reporting
Line: From Library to Extended Learning
Justification: The placement of the Faculty Resource Center in Golden
Library is an ideal location for technology training activities.
However, the logical reporting line for technology instruction to
enhance teaching should be Academic Affairs and, specifically, Extended
Learning.
Advising and Freshman Studies – Change in
Reporting Line: From President to VPAA
Justification: Historically, oversight of curriculum and advising
are ENMU faculty responsibilities. Following the reorganization
of the Advising Office and the Freshman Studies Program (including
UNIV 101) under the president's direct oversight, these areas now
report to the VPAA.
Media Services – Change in Reporting Line:
From Library to Information Technology Services
Justification: As the number of smart classrooms grows and instructional
media becomes increasingly technology-based, the operations that
relate directly to computer technology need to be incorporated into
the campus-wide lab and instructional technology support structure,
appropriately housed in ITS.
Ruidoso Campus – Change in Reporting Line:
From VPAA to President
Justification: With the approval of the Ruidoso Instruction Center
for branch/community college status, the Dean of Ruidoso becomes
a Provost and, as such, has a direct reporting line to the President.
Grants and Contracts – Change in Reporting
Line: From President to Ex Dir, Planning & Analysis
Justification: Informal campus discussions have supported the creation
of a full-time grant writer/grant manager position. While any institutional
grant initiative would be guided by the University president, the
day-to-day supervision of this position would move to Planning &
Analysis. Grant writing is integrally associated with institutional
data research and institutional planning.
Retention Initiative – Office of Responsibility:
Executive Director, Planning and Analysis
Justification: While several initiatives have been launched on ENMU's
campus (Freshmen Seminars, learning communities, a retention task
force, and some activities of the AAC&U "Greater Expectations"
initiative), these require broad coordination. A major planning
initiative, the retention effort can be coordinated in the Planning
Office, collaborating with critical areas in Academic Affairs, Student
Affairs, University Relations, and other units on campus.
Annual Faculty Emeritus
Luncheon on Monday, May 2 – The Friends of
Eastern Foundation will host the annual Faculty Emeritus Luncheon
on Monday, May 2, at 12 noon in the Zia Room of the Campus Union
Building. The Distinguished Faculty Emeriti awards will be presented
at the luncheon. This year's recipients include Dr. Bill Calton,
Mr. B.B. Lees, Dr. Victoria Sanchez, Dr. Jack Secor, Dr. Candido
Tafoya, and Dr. Bill Wood. In addition, Dr. Ralph Black, Mr. Eugene
Fox, and Dr. George Jones will be honored posthumously. Members
of the university community are cordially invited to attend the
luncheon on a dutch-treat basis. Tickets can be purchased at the
door for $8. Please RSVP by April 22 by calling the Office of Development
at ext. 2412.

11. Tickets go on sale Saturday, April 2. The opening act will be
Billy Joe Shaver.

Nelson, born in 1933 in Abbott, Texas, has recorded over 200 albums,
appeared in several movies, been inducted into the Country Music
Hall of Fame, and received the prestigious Kennedy Center honor
for preemininent performing artists. He is also known for Farm Aid,
an annual concert which raises money and awareness for American
family farmers.
Nelson’s latest CD is “Milk Cow Blues.” It combines
the talents of Nelson, an array of special guests, and the cream
of the Austin, Texas, blues community. Guest stars include B.B.
King, Dr. John, young singer-guitarist Susan Tedeschi, Keb' Mo',
Francine Reed (who usually duets with Nelson's fellow Texan, Lyle
Lovett), and blues prodigies Johnny Lang and Kenny Wayne Shepherd.
Legendary singer/songwriter Billy Joe Shaver will open the show.
Shaver wrote all but one of the songs on Waylon Jennings' "Honk
Tonk Heroes" album which started the outlaw stage of country
music in the '70's. Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Billy Joe Shaver
and David Allan Coe were considered the outlaws of country music.
Shaver's songs have been recorded by Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, The
Highwaymen, The Allman Brothers Band, Kris Kristofferson, Bruce
Springsteen, Joe Ely, Robert Earl Keen, Johnny Rodriquez and
many others.
For more information on the concert, call 505.562.2631.

Legislative Internships
Available – The New Mexico Legislative Council
is seeking applicants for the 2005 Legislative Internship Program.
This is the tenth year that the Legislative Council Service has
administered the program. The opportunity is for two applicants
to work in the New Mexico Legislature, one of the interns is assigned
to the Legislative Council Service and one to the Legislative Finance
Committee.
The purpose of the Legislative Internship Program is to educate
interested students about the state legislature and to provide practical
experience in the performance of day-to-day staff work for New Mexico's
citizen-legislature. Interns will provide staff support to interim
legislative committees that study the criminal justice system, governmental
ethics, election issues, tax policy and planning, Indian affairs,
health care, welfare reform and scientific and technological developments.
Work performed by interns may include research, issues analyses,
speech writing and helping to organize interim legislative committee
meetings.
Each intern will receive a stipend of $9,000, paid in bi-weekly
installments, and will be reimbursed for expenses incurred while
traveling with interim legislative committees. The internships will
be full time and will last from July 1 through December 31, 2004.
An intern's day will commence at 8:00 a.m. and end at 5:00 p.m.
Interns will be responsible for making their own housing arrangements.
The Legislative Council Service cautions applicants that housing
in or near Santa Fe may be a problem. Attempts are made to assist
interns with housing, but no convenient and affordable housing arrangements
are certain.
All applicants must be full-time, degree-seeking undergraduates
at one of the six state universities. Students receiving undergraduate
degrees in May 2005 are eligible for the program.

accompanying essay of no more than 500 words, explaining why the
applicant is seeking the internship; a resume; and a transcript
(an unofficial copy will suffice) of college courses. Failure to
provide the requested documents will result in disqualification
of an applicant.
Submit application materials to Dr. Anthony B. Schroeder in the
Department of Communicative Arts and Sciences on or before Friday,
May 06. According to Dr. Schroeder, ENMU can nominate two primary
applicants and one alternate.
The Legislative Council Service is an equal opportunity employer.

with strategies for intervening in anti-LGBT bias and for being
a supportive ally when someone comes out to them. Alliance will
ask participants to sign a working agreement in which they affirm
their support and affirmation of the identity of their GLBT students.
Individual and group orientation sessions will begin immediately.
To register, please contact Tracy Riley at tracy.riley@enmu.edu
or by phone at 693.7082.
According to a 2003 campus climate survey published by the National
Gay and Lesbian Task Force, fully one-fifth of LGBT students fear
for their physical safety. Over half conceal their sexual identity
in order to avoid harassment or intimidation. The visible presence
of allies to whom students can turn for support can change the school
atmosphere for the student who feels marginalized. A supportive
and friendly climate enhances academic performance, school experience,
and mental and emotional health of the students who experience it.

or by phone at 693.7082.

Many of you know we have launched a CET team for the Relay for Life.
There are a number of fundraisers underway and we invite you to
contribute in anyway you can to our team and to this worthy cause.
You received a notice already regarding the SCEC raffle of multicultural
books. The books are a truly nice selection and I encourage you
to buy some raffle tickets.
If you sponsor a student group that engages in community service
this may be a good project for them. Donations both large and small
are welcomed.

in the Lobby of the Education Building on Monday, April 11, from
8 a.m. until noon and on Monday, April 18, from 3-7 p.m. You can
participate in two ways: donate baked good to the sale or come buy
some goodies.
At the Relay we would like to sell breakfast burritos beginning
at 5 a.m. the morning of the 23rd. If any of you are "awesome"
burrito makers we would love to have your help. – Cheri

Eastern New Mexico University's Department of Anthropology and Applied
Archaeology and Mu Alpha Nu Anthropology Club are pleased to announce
the Fifth Annual Blackwater Draw Atlatl Throw. The competition will
include a WAA (World Atlatl Association) Target Round and an ISAC
(International Standard Accuracy Contest). It will be held on Saturday,

Park, on the road to Cannon Air Force Base. Registration and practice
will start at 9 a.m. with the Target Round beginning at 10 a.m.
The ISAC round will take place in the afternoon.
There will be categories for men, women, and children, and prizes

for loan and sharing if you don’t. This competition is NOT
restricted to primitive technology. Atlatls may be made of traditional
or modern materials.
Some refreshments will be available for sale. Otherwise, bring a

ENMU-Roswell
News
In a continuing effort to enhance
emergency preparedness resources on campus, Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell
will soon have four dedicated Automated External Defibrillators
(AEDs) to use in the event of a cardiac emergency. The
fourth AED will be placed in the Residence Halls on Thursday, April
14 at 2 p.m.
The campus currently has AED’s available in the Security Office
in the Student Services Center, in the P.E. Center, and in the Cafeteria.
All of the AED’s on campus were purchased through the Safety
Committee.
”The Safety Committee is always at work trying to improve
the safety of the campus,” said Charles Hendrickson, Safety
Committee Chair. “It has been our initiative to place as many
AED’s on campus as our budget allows. We will continue to
add AED’s each year until we feel that we have an adequate
number on campus,” he said.
Incidents have shown that the use of an AED in the hands of a trained
layperson can mean the difference between life and death. “AED’s
are sophisticated computerized devices that are reliable and simple
to operate allowing almost anyone to attempt defibrillation,”
said Peggy Harelson, Emergency Medical Services/Training Center
coordinator. “The AED ‘shocks’ or defibrillates
the heart back from ventricular fibrillation. With every minute
that defibrillation is delayed, the chance of survival declines
by 10 percent. The AED are small and durable devices that can and
will save lives. I’m pleased that our campus has taken the
initiative to not only purchase several AEDs, but also to provide
staff training so we can be ready should an emergency happen,”
she said.
Harelson said a number of AED’s have been placed in police
vehicles and department stores throughout Chaves County, thanks
to grant funding and generous donations from community organizations
like the Roswell Woman’s Club and the Assistance League of
Chaves County. The EMS program at ENMU-Roswell is providing AED
training through the American Heart Association. For more information
on the AED's, the Public Access Defibrillation program or any American
Heart Association courses, call Harelson at 624-7249.
Five students at ENMU-Roswell were
each awarded $750 scholarships from the Roswell Woman’s Club
this spring semester. The students had the opportunity
to thank club members personally during a luncheon meeting on campus
April 13.
The scholarship recipients are: Crystal Aguilar, majoring in Nursing;
Nancy Hidalgo, majoring in Occupational Therapy Assistant; Violet
Jackson, majoring in Occupational Therapy Assistant; Lance A. Kloefkorn,
majoring in University Studies; and Rosa Mendez, majoring in Accounting.
Established in 1895, the Roswell Woman’s Club is one of the
oldest civic clubs in Roswell and has a long history of support
for ENMU-Roswell. The club now awards 10 scholarships a year—five
in the spring semester and five in the fall semester—to students
who have a GPA of 2.8 or higher and have completed at least 12 credit
hours. The object of the club is to promote higher educational,
social, moral, and civic conditions in the community.
The New Mexico Border Health Council
has selected Jane Batson, RN, MA, and Division of Health Chair at
ENMU-Roswell, as one of four Lifetime Achievement Award recipients.
The award recognizes individuals who contribute to the improvement
of healthcare in border populations. Batson will receive her award
on April 22 in Las Cruces during the Border Health Council’s
Annual Awards Luncheon. The event is sponsored by the New Mexico
Office of Border Health, Department of Health New Mexico Outreach
Office, U.S.-Mexico Border Health Commission, Border Epidemiology
and Environmental Health Center, and New Mexico State University.
Other Lifetime Achievement Award recipients are Dr. Gilbert Handal,
Regional Chairman, Department of Pediatrics at Texas Tech University
Health Science Center in El Paso, Texas; Dr. Jorge Magana, Director,
El Paso City-County Health and Environmental Health District in
El Paso, Texas; and Nancy Rivera, LPN, First Step Pediatrics in
Las Cruces.
Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell recently welcomed
six new members to the Community Advisory Council. They
are Doug Austin, Cory Butler, David Chavez, Russ DeKay, Linda Sacra,
and Diane Taylor. The Community Advisory Council meets the first
Thursday of every other month at 4:00 p.m. on campus. Members advise
administrators in a number of areas, including programs, communication,
and public relations. The council also assists in the development
of needed resources for the promotion, expansion, and operation
of the Roswell campus. The next meeting will be held on June 2.
The continuing members of the Community Advisory Council are Ray
Baca, Mike Bush, Bob Cates, Deanna Cheney, Magil Duran, Otto Eachus,
Steve Gonzales, Major Carl Hansen, Steve Henderson, Shawn Hughes,
Glen Packard, John Reid, and LaNelle Witt.

Excel series – Auto-Expanding Chart Series
In earlier versions of Excel, it was difficult to create a chart
that expands when data is added to the end of one or more of the
series. Excel 2003's List feature solves this problem. To designate
a data area as a list, click in a cell in the soon-to-be list, and
choose Data | List | Create List. Then create your chart using the
list data. Now, whenever you add new data to your list, the data
area plotted by the chart expands automatically to include it.
PowerPoint series – For a quick preview of a slide
show while you're editing a presentation, hold down the Ctrl key
while clicking on View Show in the Slide Show menu. Instead of launching
in full-screen mode, the presentation, starting with the current
slide, will appear in a small window atop the slide being edited.
To edit the slide and see your changes in real time, resize the
PowerPoint window so the preview slide is in view. Any modifications
you make will instantly appear in the preview window.
DAT file version update – To check that your
computer is up-to-date with the most current versions of virusscan
software, locate the blue and white shield with a red “V”
in it by your system clock on the bottom right side of your screen
and click on it with the right mouse button. Then choose “About
VirusScan Enterprise” in the pull-down box. There are two
things to look for; one is the “Virus Definitions” which
should be at 4469 and the other is the “Scan Engine”
which should be at 4.4.00 (4400). If either one is not displaying
the above versions, please contact the Helpdesk at 562.4357 for
assistance.
