Memorial Service Held
for James Cobb – I just wanted to let everyone
know that our family memorial service for James was held on Saturday,
July 30, at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 3001 Wolflin
Avenue, in Amarillo, Texas. The children and I will then be traveling
to NC to scatter James' ashes in the Linville Wilderness Area, as
per his wishes. Since this will involve a little hike, I was waiting
until my physical condition allowed me to make this trek. We are
looking forward to some final closure after a very difficult year.
I appreciate so much the love and support of the ENMU community.
I am looking forward to returning to work in August. I hope that
the summer terms have gone well and that everyone had a chance for
some relaxation time. With much appreciation. – Jeanne

will air 50 times on the three stations.
Number Changed for Employees to Make
Long Distance Calls While Traveling – For
the past three years, Eastern New Mexico University employees traveling
outside of the local calling area could dial an 800 number and use
their long distance authorization code and a four-digit PIN (Personal
Identification Number) to make long distance calls. These calls
would be billed to their department. On June 26 a new toll-free
number will be activated for this purpose, eliminating the need
to enter the PIN. After this date, the previous toll-free number
will no longer be used. This toll-free service should only be used
outside our local calling area.
To use the new toll-free access:
Dial 1.866.788.7016 and you will hear dial tone.
Dial * 6 * + authorization code + # (sign) + 6 + area code and phone
number.
(This is the same dialing sequence that is used when you are on
campus)
Charges for these calls will appear on your department bill.
If you have questions or need assistance, please contact Linda Hamrick
at extension 2287 or Rick Bresler at extension 2265.

ENMU-Roswell Nursing
Program Receives State Funding –
The nursing program at Eastern New Mexico
University-Roswell is one of 16 programs in the state selected to
receive funds from a $2 million appropriation announced by Governor
Bill Richardson. ENMU-Roswell will receive $98,808 to expand the
nursing program with the goal of graduating more students with nursing
degrees.
According to Jane Batson, Division of Health Chair
at ENMU-Roswell, the nursing program is already growing, with the
largest first year nursing class in the history of the campus starting
this fall semester. “This funding allows us to continue the
growth of the program,” said Batson. “Our graduation
rate doubled this year, and we anticipate continued growth of the
program with greater retention. We are also grateful to our partners
who are helping make this a reality, especially Eastern New Mexico
Medical Center.”
“We are so grateful to have these funds to help
us keep our nursing program functioning at its maximum capacity,”
said Dr. Judy Armstrong ENMU-Roswell Provost. “The more students
we can graduate, the better it is for our county and our state.
We are doing our best to fill the huge need for nurses, and our
nursing program is one of the best in the nation,” she said.
Richardson said the funding is needed to increase
the number of nurses in New Mexico. He said the state has 25 percent
fewer nurses than it needs, and some estimates predict that the
shortfall could double by the year 2020. “New Mexico, like
virtually every state in the country, is facing a nursing shortage
that threatens to become a crisis.” Richardson said this is
the third year that additional funding has been directed toward
nursing education. He also pledged significant capital outlay funding
next year for nursing education programs.
Katherine Cantrell, interim secretary for the New
Mexico Higher Education Department, said the state is now graduating
about 700 new nurses a year. She said the additional funding in
the previous two years has resulted in a growth rate of about 10
percent at community colleges in New Mexico.
Construction
Underway on New Health Sciences Center
Construction has begun on the new Health Sciences
Center on the Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell campus. The
new 38,000 square foot building will consolidate all of the health
programs under one roof. The project calls for the renovation and
expansion of a former Walker Air Force Base building on the south
end of campus.
Construction is expected to take about one year, and university
officials hope to begin classes in the new building in fall of 2006.
The $7 million project is being funded through a $3 million statewide
general obligation bond issue passed by voters in 2004 and a portion
of an $8.1 million local bond issue passed by Chaves County voters
in 2003.
According to Jane Batson, Division of Health Chair, enrollment in
healthcare programs at the university has grown 76 percent over
the past five years. Batson said the largest first year nursing
class in the history of the campus will be starting this fall semester.
“We’re thrilled to see construction in progress and
to know that we will be able to meet the increasing demands in our
region for healthcare professionals,” she said.
Kirtland AFB Pararescue Candidates
Graduated
A group of 21 United States Air Force pararescue candidates from
Kirtland Air Force Base graduated with Certificates of Completion
in Paramedic during a ceremony on Wednesday, July 20 at 6 p.m. in
the ENMU-Roswell Occupational Technology Center Seminar Room. One
civilian student will also graduate during the ceremony.
Since January, the parajumpers or “PJ” students have
been enrolled in an accelerated paramedic training program on campus
taught by ENMU-Roswell Emergency Medical Services (EMS) instructors.
The students have completed 62 credit hours of training and recently
returned from six weeks of clinical field experience in Orlando,
Florida. While there, they worked with the Orange County Fire and
Rescue Department and in a number of regional medical centers.
On Friday, July 22, the graduates took the National Registry Exam
and, for those who passed, will start the pararescue apprenticeship
course at Kirtland AFB in Albuquerque. This is the final stage of
the training pipeline that for some of the men has taken two years
to complete. Following the apprenticeship period, the men will graduate
in March of 2006 with the maroon beret and will then be assigned
to one of only six pararescue military units in the country. They
will then be deployed to support troop missions fighting the war
on terrorism in places like Afghanistan and Iraq. Those missions
will include rescuing and caring for pilots and soldiers who fall
behind enemy lines and providing medical treatment to civilians.
ENMU-Roswell Offering New Fall
Courses
Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell is offering two new Heating,
Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Technology courses this coming
fall semester. A Basic Electric and Control class will be held Tuesdays
and Thursdays from 6-8:30 p.m. A Fundamentals of Refrigeration class
will be held Mondays and Wednesdays from 6-8:30 p.m. These introductory
courses are included in two new certificates and an associate’s

“The HVACR industry is rapidly growing and offers very competitive
wages,” said Dusty Heritage, Associate Dean of Career and
Technical Education. “Certified techs can specialize in a
variety of areas—service, installation, food services, residential,
commercial, or industrial,” she said. For more information,

Higher Learning Magazine Accepting
Submissions
Higher Learning Magazine is currently
accepting submissions (in the form of press releases, completed
articles or news briefs, and story ideas) for its September/October
2005 issue. If your school has any new and exciting developments
or events focusing on the use of technology in learning and teaching,
please feel free to submit them to kglen@teachmag.com,
before July 31.
Higher Learning concentrates on technology-based educational applications
for post-secondary institutions. The worlds of teaching and learning
are quickly evolving, pushed by rapid technological change. Higher
Learning addresses the many ways technology impacts post-secondary
teaching and learning through practical information in articles,
columns, application stories, case histories and profiles, and presents
comprehensive product information to readers. No other electronic
publication in North America presents consistent, substantive content
in this area for the post-secondary school market.
We know what educators are looking for: information that is useful
and pragmatic. As an electronic publication, Higher Learning directly
reflects the interests and concerns of our readers. Better yet,
much of the content comes directly from educators themselves. Peers
speak directly to peers about the latest applications affecting
the delivery of information. Readers have the opportunity to respond
immediately to information they view in Higher Learning. Online
readership surveys and feedback posted on Higher Learning¹s
Web site (http://www.teachmag.com/higher_learning.asp)
create an instant dialogue with readers.
Higher Learning reaches some 234,000 post-secondary school staff,
instructors, assistant professors, professors, department heads,
deans and presidents of colleges and universities in North America.
This audience constitutes the key technology decision-makers at
the post-secondary school level.

Outlook series – Attachments Being Blocked Because
of Filename
Have you ever had a file that you attached to an e-mail
message or received as an attachment blocked or sent to the “Quarantine”
area in Outlook? Barring that the file is not infected with a virus,
there is another reason why this might be happening. If you included
any punctuation such as a period in the filename before the extension
name, the virus-scanning program will consider this as a non-trusted
file and block it. Many trojans and viruses use punctuation characters
in their naming convention. An example of a filename that will be
blocked by the scanning software is 03.23.05Letter.doc. Although
the file is not infected by a virus, the file will be quarantined
because it has a naming convention of a trojan or virus. A valid
filename would be 032305Letter.doc; the only punctuation character
is the period between the filename (032305Letter) and the extension
(doc). When naming files that you will be attaching to email messages,
be sure to not include any punctuation characters in the filename.
