Ginger's
Fire Safety Tips for the Christmas Holidays –
H ere are some guidelines when decorating the office for the holiday
season:
1) The best locations for decoration include reception areas, lobbies,
foyers, and break rooms. Please do not block exit corridors, nor
place in such a manner as to obstruct the view of exit signs, fire
alarm pull stations, fire extinguishers, or hose cabinets.
2) Always check Christmas lights whether they are old or fresh out
of the box. Examine them carefully for broken or frayed wires or
loose connections. If you find any of these conditions, do not attempt
to repair it. Discard the lights.
3) Remember no open flames and candles in state-owned property.
4) Use of extension cords is discouraged; if they are used, make
sure they are in good condition. Make sure the extension cord is
large enough to carry the intended load. (The thicker the cord,
the greater the load it should be able to carry without overheating.)
Never staple an extension cord to the wall or woodwork. It could
damage the cord and present a fire hazard. Don't run cords through
doorways or under rugs. The insulation on the cords can become damaged
if the door closes on the cord, or if people step on it under the
rug, causing a potential fire and/or shock hazard.
5) Turn decorative lights on only when you are at work. Never leave
lights on when the office is unoccupied.
The Safety Office wishes you all a very merry and safe Christmas!
