It is free, and all materials will be provided.
Eastern Participating
in National Survey of Student Engagement –
The NSSE will soon come to ENMU and several hundred other colleges
and universities across the
country. While it's easy to ignore surveys, this one is short but
has the potential to actually make a difference in the quality of
undergraduate education here and elsewhere because it asks the kinds
of questions that matter to student learning and institutional effectiveness,
according to a release from NSSE.
How much reading and writing is required? How often do students
interact with other students who are from different backgrounds
and cultures? How good is the academic advising? How many students
work with faculty members on research and other activities? “A
sample of 450 freshmen and 450 seniors will be asked to complete
the survey. The survey takes less than 15 minutes to complete –
they will be sent a paper copy initially or they can complete it
on the Web,” says Dr. Sue Strickler. The survey will be mailed
to the students and reach them around Feb. 14. The National Survey
of Student Engagement is supported by a grant from The Pew Charitable
Trusts to help colleges and universities improve undergraduate education.
Pew is a philanthropic organization interested in college students
and collegiate quality and is underwriting the project as a public
service. Additional information about The National Survey of Student
Engagement (NSSE) is available on the Web
at
http://www.iub.edu/~nsse/) or http://www.indiana.edu/~nsse/html/quick_facts.htm.

with only a few scores selected out of hundreds submitted each year.
“Galactica,” along with four other compositions, were
recorded in late spring by the Kiev Philharmonic conducted by Robert
Ian Winstin. The Kiev Philharmonic has also programmed “Galactica”
on their fall 2005 concert series. Other performances of “Galactica”
include the November 2004 College Music Society National Conference
Composer’s Concert in San Francisco, Calif., where it was
performed by the San Jose State University Wind Ensemble. Additional

Science Fair
Set for March 12 – The Southeastern New Mexico
Regional Science and Engineering Fair will be held in the Campus
Union Ballroom on the campus of Eastern New Mexico University on
Saturday, March 12. The fair is one of six Regional Science Fairs
held throughout New Mexico, and is open to students from the 6th
through the 12th grade. According to The International Science and
Engineering Fair official rules, students wishing to participate
in the fair need not have been previously entered in any other fair,
although some of the schools in the district send their winners.
Home-schooled students are also eligible to enter, as are students
from the public schools, even if their teacher isn’t sponsoring
them. The fair has 13 categories: Behavioral and Social Sciences,
Biochemistry (senior division only), Botany, Chemistry, Computer
Science, Earth and Space Sciences, Engineering, Environmental Science,
Mathematics, Medicine and Health Science, Microbiology, Physics,
and Zoology. The fair is divided into two divisions: A junior division
that includes 6th through 8th grades, and a senior division for
9th through 12th grades, according to Rosemary Mathews, secretary
for the mathematical sciences department. Fair day consists of four
activities: setting up, free time, interviews with judges, and an
awards assembly. Lunch will be provided for participants and their
sponsors. Winners of 1st and 2nd place in their categories are invited
to exhibit their projects at the New Mexico Science Fair held at
New Mexico Tech University in Socorro in April. Each Regional Science
Fair sends two delegates to the Intel International Science and
Engineering Fair, which are held this year in Phoenix, Ariz., on
May 8-14. For additional information on the International Science
and Engineering Fair rules and regulations, please visit the ISEF
website at www.sciserv.org/isef.
College of
Business Participating in Black History Month –
To take a more active role in Black History Month, the ENMU
College of Business (COB) has worked with the Office of Multicultural
Affairs and the Office of African-American Affairs to invite Dr.
Percy Vaughn to the ENMU campus. Dr. Vaughn earned his DBA at Texas
Tech University and has been dean of the College of Business at
Alabama State University since 1975. Dean Gerry Huybregts and Professor
Bill Brunsen have worked with Dr. Vaughn for nearly 15 years as
a part of their involvement with the Association of Collegiate Business
Schools and Programs (ACBSP) and Delta Mu Delta National Honor Society
in Business Administration. Dr. Vaughn is a nationally known educator
who is held in high regard within the higher education community.
ENMU is confident that he will bring an important perspective and
message to our students. Given Dr. Vaughn’s stature in ACBSP
and the academic community in general, we are fortunate to have
him visit ENMU. Dr. Vaughn will speak to the African-American students
during a special luncheon on Feb. 22. Dr. Vaughn will also speak
to ENMU classes during his visit. He has strong views on students
accepting and meeting their responsibilities; while supportive,
he is demanding. Further information is available from Office of
Multicultural Affairs, 562.4914, Office of African-American Affairs,

story collections. His science fiction is "varied, intelligent
and powerfully imaginative," according to his bio. "Hardwired"
(1986) and "Voice of the Whirlwind" (1987) extend cyberpunk
in new directions. "The Rift" (1999), "Metropolitan"
(1995), "City on Fire" (1996, Hugo and Nebula nominee),

ENMU-Roswell
News
The Phi Theta Kappa International Honor
Society of the Two-Year College has recognized ENMU-Roswell’s
Alpha Mu Pi Chapter with a $100 Pinnacle Silver Scholarship
Award. The Pinnacle Scholarship Award Program encourages
chapters to enhance their methods of communicating the benefits
of membership to eligible students. To earn the Pinnacle Silver
Chapter designation, a chapter must increase its membership acceptance
rate by 10 percent over the previous year.
Under the guidance of Jennie Bower, Advisor, the Alpha Mu Pi Chapter
at ENMU-Roswell works to make students aware of the multitude of
honors, benefits, and opportunities available to them through membership
in Phi Theta Kappa. The Pinnacle Scholarship funds can be used to
assist new inductees with payment of membership fees, provide a
scholarship to an outstanding chapter officer upon completion of
his or her term, or create a scholarship for a worthy member to
attend International Convention. “We congratulate your Alpha
Mu Pi Chapter for their superlative efforts that earned them the
2004 Pinnacle Silver Chapter Award,” said Rod A. Risley, Executive
Director of Phi Theta Kappa.

Dr. Donald R. Burleson, independent researcher
and Faculty Director in the Developmental Studies Lab at ENMU-Roswell,
has submitted a Freedom of Information Act request
to the U.S. Department of Energy seeking the release of the classified
portions of the 1954 Atomic Energy Commission hearings in which
Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer attempted, without success, to have his
suspended security clearance reinstated.
Dr. Oppenheimer, who had headed up the team at Los Alamos that successfully
developed the atomic bomb during World War II, had his Top Secret
security clearance suspended in December 1953 due to his reluctance
to work on the hydrogen bomb project and due to allegations that
some of his family members and friends had been Communists during
the 1930s. His hearings with the AEC lasted for several weeks during
April and May of 1954 and were classified, with his lawyers being
barred from the room when classified information was presented.
In the end his clearance was not reinstated, and he left government
service forever to resume his directorship of the Princeton Institute
for Advanced Studies. He died in 1967.
The transcripts of the hearings were published, but extensive classified
portions were edited out, and Dr. Burleson has been assembling evidence
that the reasons given for denial of Oppenheimer’s clearance
were not the real reasons. According to Burleson, suspicious procedures
were also used. For example, in the weeks leading up to the hearings,
Dr. Oppenheimer’s private phone line was wiretapped and his
strategy planning with his attorneys was passed along ahead of time
to the AEC legal team that would be opposing him.
“Oppie was shafted,” says Burleson, “and if we
ever can get the classified portions of the hearing transcripts
released, we may find out why. I think the real reasons were a great
deal more mysterious than some people in government want to admit
even now.” For one thing, Burleson says, documents exist linking
Oppenheimer to crash retrieval activities in New Mexico in the late
1940s, and the chairman of the security board that presided over
his AEC hearings was reputed to be a member of MJ-12, the group
reportedly set up by President Truman in 1947 to oversee investigation
into unidentified flying objects and crash retrievals.
“That may well be the main reason,” Burleson claims,
“why someone wanted Oppenheimer permanently out of the loop.”

Kiwanis of Portales is
both a local and international organization which has been helping
children all over the world since 1915. It has been serving the
children of Portales over a half century (since 1953). The organization
will observed its 90th anniversary at the home of Dr. James Lee
on Friday (February 11th). Lee is the president of the Portales
club, news and public affairs director for KENW/KMTH-FM, adjunct
faculty here at the university, and a weekly columnist for the Portales
News Journal. Kiwanis meets each week in the Pecos Room at the CUB.
The Portales club is also in the process of forming a Circle K Club
on campus for ENMU students. Circle K members have the opportunity
for involvement in Kiwanis programs helping children here and internationally,
to earn community service hours, have something special on resumes
in addition to degrees upon graduation, have the chance to meet
new friends, and have the opportunity to apply for Kiwanis scholarships.
Portales Kiwanis presents its famous annual chili supper
5-7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 18, at the First United Methodist
Church Fellowship Hall on 2nd Street and Avenue C in Portales. Tickets
are still available. Proceeds go to the Kiwanis mission of helping
our local children. For tickets or information, call Dr. Jim Lee
at 562.2675 or 359.2204. Regular and vegetarian chili will be on
hand, and tickets are just $5 ($3 for children). It’s the
best chili in town, and it’s for a really great cause.

TechTips
Helpful Hints for using ENMU Technology (courtesy of ITS Computing)
Computing
Word series – Word Count Toolbar
As many of us know, having to manually check the word count in your
document can cut into your typing time. To get rid of this pesky
problem, use this easy shortcut: Go to View, Toolbars, and select
Word Count. Drag the floating toolbar to the right side of your
existing toolbar so that it remains at the top of your screen. You
can resize the window that displays the number of words by choosing
Tools, Customize, and Toolbars resizing the window while the Customize
dialog box is open. You can periodically update the count by clicking
on the Recount button.
Outlook series – System Administrator - Your Mailbox is over
its Size Limit!!!!
This seems to pop up quite a bit, and is a never-ending problem.
There are several reasons why:
1. If you don’t need it, delete it. Be reasonable about keeping
too much information.
2. Empty your deleted items folder often; many are set up to automatically
delete upon exit.
3. Don't forget about deleting messages from your Sent Items as
well.
4. Archive your Inbox to your file server or hard drive.
These simple tips can eliminate this problem all together.
DAT file version update – To check that your
computer is up-to-date with the most current versions of virusscan
software, locate the blue and white shield with a red “V”
in it by your system clock on the bottom right side of your screen
and click on it with the right mouse button. Then choose “About
VirusScan Enterprise” in the pull-down box. There are two
things to look for; one is the “Virus Definitions” which
should be at 4427 and the other is the “Scan Engine”
which should be at 4.4.00 (4400). If either one is not displaying
the above versions, please contact the Helpdesk at 562.4357 for
assistance.
If you have a tip you would like to share with us please send it
to: ENMU.TechTips@enmu.edu
