Annual Williamson Lectureship
Back For 29th Year on March 3 – The 29th annual
Williamson Lectureship series will be held on the campus of Eastern
New Mexico University on March 3, 2005. The day’s events include
a luncheon, hosted by noted science fiction author Connie Willis.
The luncheon will begin at 11:45 a.m. in the Campus Union Ballroom
and will be attended by Dr. Jack Williamson and guest speakers Gregory
Benford and Walter Jon Williams. There will also be a panel presentation
by the authors at 7 p.m. that evening in Buchanan Hall of the Music
Building. This year’s lectureship will address “Posthumanity
Evolving,” and will engage the audience in discussion.
The lectureship honors distinguished science fiction author, scholar
and Emeritus Professor of English Jack Williamson, whose recent
and widely acclaimed novel,
“Terraforming Earth,” (2001) will soon be joined by
“The Stonehenge Gate” (Tor, anticipated publication,
August 2005). Joining Dr. Williamson will be two other noted science
fiction authors, Gregory Benford and Walter Jon Williams.
Benford is a physicist and astronomer at the University of California,
Irvine, and serves as a consultant for NASA. His best-known novel,
“Timescape” (1980), his popular Galactic Center series
“In The Ocean of Night” (1977), “Across the Sea
of Suns” (1984), and "many others are all marked by the
talent of a gifted writer and the knowledge of a practicing scientist,"
according to a supplied biography.
Walter Jon Williams is the author of 20 novels and several short
story collections. His science fiction is "varied, intelligent
and powerfully imaginative," according to his bio. "Hardwired"
(1986) and "Voice of the Whirlwind" (1987) extend cyberpunk
in new directions. "The Rift" (1999), "Metropolitan"
(1995), "City on Fire" (1996, Hugo and Nebula nominee),
and his trilogy of "Dread Empire’s Fall" "create
worlds that readers want to explore and long to escape from,"
according to his bio.

Messenger: Common Workplace Courtesies That Reduce Tension &
Lower Stress.” In this brief video, you’ll learn how
to “arrest” bad workplace behavior such as: Verbal assault
with a deadly tongue, disturbing the peace, mismanaging meetings,
stealing co-workers’ supplies, kidnapping co-workers’
time, the “I didn’t break it” sneak-away, hovering
in a no-hovering zone, and more. The facilitator for this session

Science Fair
Set for March 12 – The Southeastern New Mexico
Regional Science and Engineering Fair will be held in the Campus
Union Ballroom on the campus of Eastern New Mexico University on
Saturday, March 12. The fair is one of six Regional Science Fairs
held throughout New Mexico, and is open to students from the 6th
through the 12th grade. For more information, call Rosemary Mathews
at 562.2309.
According to The International Science and Engineering Fair official
rules, students wishing to participate in the fair need not have
been previously entered in any other fair, although some of the
schools in the district send their winners. Home-schooled students
are also eligible to enter, as are students from the public schools,
even if their teacher isn’t sponsoring them.
The fair has 13 categories: Behavioral and Social Sciences, Biochemistry
(senior division only), Botany, Chemistry, Computer Science, Earth
and Space Sciences, Engineering, Environmental Science, Mathematics,
Medicine and Health Science, Microbiology, Physics, and Zoology.
The fair is divided into two divisions: A junior division that includes
6th through 8th grades, and a senior division for 9th through 12th
grades, according to Rosemary Mathews, secretary for the mathematical
sciences department. Fair day consists of four activities: setting
up, free time, interviews with judges, and an awards assembly. Lunch
will be provided for participants and their sponsors.
Winners of 1st and 2nd place in their categories are invited to
exhibit their projects at the New Mexico Science Fair held at New
Mexico Tech University in Socorro in April. Each Regional Science
Fair sends two delegates to the Intel International Science and
Engineering Fair, which are held this year in Phoenix, Ariz., on
May 8-14.
For additional information on the International Science and Engineering
Fair rules and regulations, please visit the ISEF website at www.sciserv.org/isef.

Lowe's Tax Solution
There is a problem with the charging of tax on purchases from Lowe's
in Clovis. When the clerk asks you for a phone number, please use
the phone number of 562.2425 (Purchasing Department) it will link
your purchase to Eastern New Mexico University, therefore, eliminating
the problem with being charged tax. Also, I was informed that Eastern
New Mexico University has been assigned the number 20 with Lowe's.
So, use 20 if they ask you for your assigned number.
If you have any questions, please give me a call. – Dorothy

Relay for
Life Fundraiser a Success – The Roosevelt
County Relay For Life’s Art Auction fundraiser was a success
due to support from several local artists, banking institutions,
and art patrons. Nine local artists, Marilyn Rigsby of Investments
Out West, Phillip Million, Doris Fleming, LaWanda Calton, Jula May,
Betsy Freeman, Shirley Ford, Tim McGee, and Lois Fox, donated art
pieces to Relay For Life for the fundraiser. Roosevelt County banking
institutions, Access Bank, Portales National Bank, and Wells Fargo,
provided display space for the art pieces during the auction. Many
art patrons participated to bid on the pieces provided by the artists.
The Roosevelt County Relay For Life was able to raise nearly $1,800
to aid in the fight against cancer. The Art Auction was the first
fundraiser leading up to the Relay For Life event being held April
22-23.
What Is Relay for Life?
Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society's (www.cancer.org)
signature activity. It offers everyone in the community a chance
to participate in the fight against cancer. Teams of people camp
out at the Eastern New Mexico University Greyhound Arena and take
turns walking or running around the court. Each team is asked to
have a representative on the track at all times during the event.
Relay For Life is an overnight event, up to 24 hours in length.
Join the Fight Against Cancer
Because Relay For Life is a community gathering rather than an athletic
event, anyone and everyone can participate. Currently, there are
a number of teams participating from Eastern New Mexico University,
including the College of Business lead by Rebecca Cree, Communications
Department lead by Patti Dobson, and the Music Department lead by
Jean Wozencraft-Ornellas.
If you are interested in joining a team or starting your own Relay
For Life team, contact team recruitment chair Janeice Scarbrough
at 359.1013 or e-mail Janeice.Scarbrough@enmu.edu.
For more information about Relay For Life events, contact Mandi
Park at (home) 356.8180, (work) 562.2166 or e-mail Mandi.Park@enmu.edu.

Alpha Lambda Delta Initiates at
Eastern New Mexico University – 33 students accepted
membership and were initiated into National Alpha Lambda Delta Honor
Society for First Year Students on February 20, 2005. Founded in
the Spring of 1924 at the University of Illinois, Alpha Lambda Delta
is a national honor society that recognizes and encourages academic
excellence among first-year students. Today, Alpha Lambda Delta
has over 245 chapters throughout the nation and offers over $120,000
each year in scholarships and fellowships to its members. Membership
in Alpha Lambda Delta is open to full-time freshmen who earn a scholastic
average of 3.5 or better at a four-year college or university and
are in the top 20 percent of their class. Alpha Lambda Delta emphasizes
that educated persons have a responsibility to "have tolerance
in dealings with all persons, generosity in giving to those in need,
and insight into the feelings of others." Members are challenged
to make a "meaningful contribution to society" and, through
their chapters, engage in community service projects as well as
campus service activities. The new initiates to Alpha Lambda Delta
at Eastern New Mexico University have taken an oath to continue
to "maintain high scholarship and to use my education for the
benefit of my community, my nation, and the world in which we live."
Congratulations to these ENMU students. For more information about
Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society for First Year Students, visit

and illustrations by clicking on "Famous Cases: Roswell"
and then on the article itself.
Dr. Burleson's article uses vector analysis to show that after the
Roswell UFO apparently exploded over the Debris Field, it could
only have fallen within a certain approximately computable range
of distances down-country, based on reasonable assumptions (assumptions
consistent with witness accounts) about the object's velocity and
altitude at the time of the explosion. The article includes analysis
of the assumption that the UFO lost self-propulsion at the moment
of trauma. Employing the principles of physics, this is the first
study of its kind on the Roswell UFO crash.
