Next Day Off Will be Presidents' Day – Due to a vote by employees last year, Eastern will be closed on Presidents' Day on Monday, Feb. 21. Eastern will be open on Monday, Jan. 17, on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Retirement Reception for Alma Lyle – Ms. Alma Lyle Bilberry will be honored at a retirement reception on Monday, Jan. 17, from 2-4 p.m. in the SAS Atrium. Punch and cake will be served. Everyone is invited.

New Regent Named to Replace Blaine Hess – Pauline Ponce of Roswell has been appointed by Gov. Richardson to replace Blaine Hess, whose term has expired, as an ENMU regent. Ms. Ponce served as the state representative from District 58 from 2000-2004. She has three educational degrees from ENMU and was formerly the deputy superintendent for the Roswell Independent School District, where she retired in 2000.

ENMU's New Student Regent Named to Replace Tracy Henderson – Student Governor Bill Richardson has announced the appointment of Diego Espinoza of Moriarty as the new student regent at Eastern New Mexico University. Diego is seeking a degree in physical education and previously attended the University of New Mexico. He is a founding member and president of Lambda Theta Phi Latino Fraternity at ENMU and enjoys politics. Diego participates in varsity track and field and served as a mentor for students at Albuquerque High School, where he founded La Raza Unida.

Intranet Gets Name – ENMU has voted to name the new Web system InsideENMU. The system will be used to keep our internal forms and information separate from the public Web site. You can find more information about the new system by visiting www.enmu.edu/intranet.

Performance Appraisal Information – This is a reminder that the annual performance appraisal period for support, professional and at-will employees is the calendar year: Jan. 1 through Dec. 31, 2004. Forms and general guidelines are available at www.enmu.edu/services/personnel. The evaluation form will be completed by the employee's immediate supervisor and reviewed by the appropriate second level supervisor. Note to Supervisors: Please mark your calendars to begin notifying employees of the time and place to discuss their annual performance. Annual performance evaluations are to be completed no later than March 1, 2005. If you have any questions or need assistance with the process, please call Personnel Services at ext. 2115.

Employee Briefs

Dr. Jerry Harmon is the new dean of the College of Education and Technology at Eastern. He previously served as the dean of Education and a tenured full professor at Western New Mexico University.

Due to the departure of Dr. Haig David-West, Ms. Mic Muhlbauer has agreed to serve as interim chair of the Department of Art for the spring semester.

ITS Heldesk Holiday Hours – ITS Helpdesk Hours are as follows: Jan. 3-14: 8-12 and 1-5. Normal hours will resume on Jan. 18: M-Th: 7:30-5:30. Friday: 7:30-5.

Student Health Services to Close for Holidays – Student Health Services will be closed until Tuesday, Jan. 18. Please call and make an appointment now if you are needing to be seen for medication refills, birth control pick-up, Depo's etc. Merry Christmas to all, be safe and see you in 2005.

Web Guru Classes Offered in January – A series of Web Guru classes will be offered Jan. 10-14 to employees of ENMU. These classes will teach you how to use Dreamweaver to update ENMU web pages. For more information or to sign up for a class, go to http://www.enmu.edu/webguru.

Bad Weather Announcements – If ENMU has a delay in opening due to bad weather, employees and students can find out details by calling 505.562.4636. Also, Communication Services contacts all area media. Broadcast e-mails and phone messages are also sent to all employees' offices. If there is no delay, no announcement is made.

Payroll Reminders and Deadlines

Deadlines for the January 14, 2005 Payroll
The Jan. 3 paperwork deadline for the Jan. 14 payroll will be unchanged.

Vision Insurance Open Enrollment
Interested employees who are not currently covered by the ENMU Vision Insurance Plan (VSP) may enroll for 2005 coverage. Applications for January deductions (February coverage) must be completed in the Payroll Office by Monday, Dec. 20.

Medical Premium Tax-Shelter Plan
ENMU's medical premium tax-shelter plan is on a calendar year basis. If you currently have your premiums tax-sheltered and wish to cancel the tax-shelter or if you would like to begin to tax-shelter your medical premiums in 2005, the appropriate documents need to be completed in the Payroll Office by Monday, Dec. 20.

Proper Way to Submit Authorized Absences – Authorized Absences cannot be submitted simply by sending an announcement to the Monday Memo. Electronic forms from the Monday Memo Web site must be used. The forms automatically go to Student Affairs for approval, and are then directed to the Monday Memo for publication.

Online Request Form Available for Publications – Communication Services has a new online request form for publications with no more inconvenient PDFs to print out. You can attach files, choose paper and ink types (and more) and then submit it online. Go to www.enmu.edu/publication_request to request your official university publication.

Work Orders May Be Submitted Online – Work Orders may be submitted online. If you will begin at ENMU home page/campus services / additional services / Physical Plant, you will see a link on the left that says Work Orders. If you have any questions, call 562.2511 for more information.

Campus Police Provides Escort Service for Students – If a student needs an escort to their car, dorm or classroom, ENMU has an escort service available during the hours of darkness. For escort services, call Campus Police at 760.2945.

How to Reach Campus Police After Hours – To reach the Campus Police Officer on duty after 5 p.m., before 8 a.m. and all day Saturday and Sunday you can call the officer on his cell phone number at 760.2945. If for some reason you are unable to reach the officer on that number, call the Portales Police Department at 356.4404 extension 0. The dispatcher will then send a Campus Officer to your destination to assist you.

ENMU-Roswell News

The Rural Community College Initiative (RCCI) Team from Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell has been nominated for a 2005 Leadership for a Changing World Award – a program of the Ford Foundation in partnership with the Advocacy Institute and the Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service, New York University. Cornelia Butler Flora, Charles F. Curtiss Distinguished Professor of Agriculture and Sociology and Director of the North Central Regional Center for Rural Development, and Mary Emery, Associate Director of the North Central Regional Center for Rural Development, nominated the ENMU-Roswell RCCI Team for the award. Team members are: Jane Batson, ENMU-Roswell Division of Health Chair; Dr. Judy Armstrong, ENMU-Roswell Provost; Judy Stubbs, Roswell City Councilor; Ray Baca, Executive Director, Boys and Girls Club of Roswell; Steve Henderson, Roswell City Councilor; and Leslie Andrews, Principal, University High School. After site visits are completed and nominations are fully evaluated throughout the summer, the Advocacy Institute, the Ford Foundation and a National Selection Committee will present the awards to the winners in the fall.

“We believe their work is changing the face of educational and economic opportunity in Chaves County far into the future,” said Flora and Emery in the nomination form. “At the same time they offer a model that can inspire others to create new opportunities in their own communities by building on local assets and focusing on specific strategies.” The Roswell team applied to join the Rural Community College Initiative in 2002. Since that time, team members have created and implemented unique programs to address the goal of reducing poverty by developing a highly skilled workforce earning high wages and benefits in Chaves County. Some of the activities noted include a tutoring program at Mountain View Middle School and the establishment of the College Access Program Scholarships (CAPS) at Sunset Elementary School.

Flora and Emery highly praised the RCCI Team for their demonstration of true, shared leadership and collaboration focused on common goals. “Together, they all look forward to the day when every child goes to college. Their success is a guide for others to follow. We believe they their experience deserves recognition.”

Computing
Word series – A faster way than the Thesaurus to find synonyms
You can see a list of synonyms by:
1. Right-clicking on a word.
2. Then choose Synonyms from the menu.
Unfortunately, some types of formatting disable this feature. For example, if the word is in a bullet or numbered list item, the synonym option does not appear when you right-click.

Outlook series – Delay delivery of a message
Did you ever want to create a message and not send it until a later date? Outlook has that ability.
1. Create a message as usual.
2. Double click Options on the toolbar.
3. Click on Options again (depending on version you may not need to do this).
4. Under Delivery options, select the Do not deliver before check box, and then click the delivery date and time you want.
DAT file version update – To check that your computer is up-to-date with the most current versions of virusscan software, locate the blue and white shield with a red “V” in it by your system clock on the bottom right side of your screen and click on it with the right mouse button. Then choose “About VirusScan Enterprise” in the pull-down box. There are two things to look for; one is the “Virus Definitions” which should be at 4418 and the other is the “Scan Engine” which should be at 4.3.20. If either one is not displaying the above versions, please contact the Helpdesk at 562.4357 for assistance.

Extended Absence Greeting:
Are you going to be away from your office for an extended period of time and will not be listening to messages? If so, record an Extended Absence Greeting to let your callers know when you will return to your office. With this type of greeting, your mailbox will not accept messages from callers so you should suggest another contact name and number who can offer immediate assistance. This greeting temporarily overrides the personal greeting.
To activate:
Dial into the voice mail system: 4200 or 562.4200 (from off-campus).
From the Ready prompt, press 4 7 and begin recording.
When you are finished recording, press the # sign to accept and turn the greeting on.
To deactivate:
Dial into the voice mail system: 4200 or 562.4200 (from off-campus).
From the Ready prompt, press 4 2.
NOTE: Your personal greeting will have to be re-recorded at this point.

Proof of high school diplomas or GED, immunizations and student clinical liability insurance are required before clinical rotation can begin. No class will be held March 22, Spring Break. Yoga, Stretch, Tone and Relax – with Lisa Moyer Tuesdays and Thursdays, Feb. 1-April 28, 7-7:50 p.m., GA-11. Be sure to wear comfortable clothes. Children 5-10 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. The fee is $60. Please register by Jan. 27. No class will be held March 22 and 24, Spring Break.

Cheerleading – Chalise Baker will offer three age-related classes Wednesdays, Feb. 2-April 27, GA-95, Racquet Ball Court I. Ages 4-8 years will be held from 5-5:50 p.m., ages 9-13 years will be held from 6-6:50 p.m. and a cheer performance class for ages 10+ will be held from 7-7:50 p.m. Please wear t-shirt, shorts and athletic shoes. The fee is $70. Please register by Jan. 28. No class will be held March 23, Spring Break.

Quilted Sweatshirt Jacket – end up with a cute and practical jacket in just four classes with Kerri Forrest, Sewing Basket, Clovis Thursdays, Feb 3-24, 6:30-9 p.m., FCS-100. Samples can be seen at the Sewing Basket. Be sure to pick up a supply list when registering at Extended Learning by Jan. 31. The fee is $50.

Beginning Stained Glass – Amy Armenta will provide some of the necessary materials for this five-week class with a $10 kit fee including practice glass for your first class. After the first class, additional colored glass can be purchased at Hobby Lobby, Clovis for $3.99 to $4.99 per square foot. This class meets Saturdays, Feb. 5-March 5, 11 a.m.-2 p.m., Tech-112. The fee is $85. Please register by Feb. 2 and bring safety goggles to class if you have them. Please plan an early lunch since no lunch breaks are scheduled during this session.

Tumbling – Join former ENMU Cheerleader, James Villanueva, for one of three age-related, Tumbling classes this spring, GA-11. Students are required to wear a leotard or tight-fitting shorts and t-shirt. Bare feet or tumbling shoes are also required for safety purposes. Beginning Tumbling, Ages 5-6 Years, will be held Saturdays, January 22-April 30, 9:30-10:20 a.m. No class will be held March 12, Science Fair or March 19 and 26, Spring Break. Intermediate Tumbling, Ages 7-12 Years, will be held Mondays, Jan. 24-April 25, 8-8:50 p.m. No class will be held Feb. 21, Presidents’ Day and March 21, Spring Break. Advanced Tumbling, Ages 13 Years -Adult, will be held Thursdays, Jan. 27-April 28, 8-8:50 p.m. No class will be held March 24, Spring Break. The fee is $70 per class. Please register by Jan. 19.

Swimming – for ages four years and up with Red Cross Certified Lifeguard Instructor, Devin McMaster, at the Natatorium. Rotations are Monday-Thursday, 4-4:50 p.m. scheduled as follows: Rotation 1-Jan. 24-Feb. 3; Rotation 2-Feb. 7-17; Rotation 3-March 7-17; and Rotation 4-March 28-April 7. The fee is $40 per rotation and includes a Red Cross certification card for the level passed. Please register by Friday noon prior to each rotation.

Ballet/Tap/Jazz/En Pointe – Join Summer Lasiter for her 13-week dance classes this spring with leotard, tights and appropriate shoes required. All classes are $70, but be sure to ask about discounts if you have more than one child enrolled or if your child is enrolled in more than one of Miss Summer’s dance classes. All classes will participate in our annual spring recital with ages 9 years and under paying a costume fee at registration. Ages 10+ years will pick and pay for their costumes at each first class. All costumes will range between $30-$60, depending on detail and size. Call Extended Learning at 505.562.2165 for class dates, times and location.

Aqua Aerobics – Join Alisha Eldridge, Red Cross Certified Lifeguard Instructor at the Natatorium for this 12-week class offered two times a week, Mondays and Wednesdays, 6-6:50 p.m., Jan. 24-April 27. Pay $8 per week or receive a discount by prepaying $90. Don’t forget your swimsuit, towel and appropriate shoes. No classes will be held Feb. 21, Presidents’ Day and March 21 and 23, Spring Break.

Paralegal – this is a nationally acclaimed program for beginning or advanced students held during six consecutive weeks Tuesday and Thursday evenings and all day Saturday, Jan. 25-March 5, COB-130. The fee is $845. Five textbooks, approximately $250, are required and should be ordered by January 18. Please call Extended Learning at 505.562.2165 for information.

Hip Hop – Join Chris Chavez an ENMU graduate this spring for his semester long Hip Hop classes Fridays, Jan. 28-April 29, GA 11. Ages 6-10 years will meet 6-6:50 p.m. while ages 11+ years will meet 7-7:50 p.m. The fee is $70 with no classes held March 18 and 25, Spring Break. Please register by Jan. 25.

Off-Campus Announcements

The Community Services Center is accepting applications for the position of Retired and Senior Volunteer Program Director. Applicants must possess managerial skills and experience in working with the senior population. Applications may be picked up at 1100 Community Way in Portales. The Community Services Center is an EOE. Deadline to apply is Jan. 21, 2005.

Higher Learning Magazine is currently accepting submissions (in the form of press releases, completed articles or news briefs, and story ideas) for its March/April 2005 issue.
