ENMU-Roswell
News
The Rural Community College Initiative
(RCCI) Team from Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell
has been nominated for a 2005 Leadership for a Changing World Award
– a program of the Ford Foundation in partnership with the
Advocacy Institute and the Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public
Service, New York University. Cornelia Butler Flora, Charles F.
Curtiss Distinguished Professor of Agriculture and Sociology and
Director of the North Central Regional Center for Rural Development,
and Mary Emery, Associate Director of the North Central Regional
Center for Rural Development, nominated the ENMU-Roswell RCCI Team
for the award. Team members are: Jane Batson, ENMU-Roswell Division
of Health Chair; Dr. Judy Armstrong, ENMU-Roswell Provost; Judy
Stubbs, Roswell City Councilor; Ray Baca, Executive Director, Boys
and Girls Club of Roswell; Steve Henderson, Roswell City Councilor;
and Leslie Andrews, Principal, University High School. After site
visits are completed and nominations are fully evaluated throughout
the summer, the Advocacy Institute, the Ford Foundation and a National
Selection Committee will present the awards to the winners in the
fall.
“We believe their work is changing the face of educational
and economic opportunity in Chaves County far into the future,”
said Flora and Emery in the nomination form. “At the same
time they offer a model that can inspire others to create new opportunities
in their own communities by building on local assets and focusing
on specific strategies.” The Roswell team applied to join
the Rural Community College Initiative in 2002. Since that time,
team members have created and implemented unique programs to address
the goal of reducing poverty by developing a highly skilled workforce
earning high wages and benefits in Chaves County. Some of the activities
noted include a tutoring program at Mountain View Middle School
and the establishment of the College Access Program Scholarships
(CAPS) at Sunset Elementary School.
Flora and Emery highly praised the RCCI Team for their demonstration
of true, shared leadership and collaboration focused on common goals.
“Together, they all look forward to the day when every child
goes to college. Their success is a guide for others to follow.
We believe they their experience deserves recognition.”
