Reception for Retiring Rita Today – After 30 years with ENMU, Rita Hill will retire on July 29. Business Affairs will host a retirement reception in her honor on Monday, July 25, from 2-3:30 p.m. in the SAS Coffee Shop. Please come and enjoy cake and punch as you say goodbye to Rita. (Warning to Rita: Keep an eye out for Monday Memo cameras.)

Outage of Cooling System Scheduled – There is a scheduled outage of the campus cooling system for the weekend of Aug. 5-7. On Friday afternoon, Aug. 5, at 5 p.m. the Physical Plant will turn off the cooling water and drain the system to accommodate the tie-in of the new Communication Building. This will affect all of the buildings on the inner part of the campus. Please call ext. 2511or e-mail lewis.reeves@enmu.edu or james.chacon@enmu.edu by July 27 about any concerns regarding this outage. The expectation is to be up and running when work resumes on Monday.

ENMU Community Invited to Ice Cream Social – Faculty, staff and studeents are invited to join the College of Business for free ice cream sundaes. To welcome everyone back and get the 2005-2006 academic year off to a great start, please come to The College of Business' 13th Annual Ice Cream Social on Wednesday, Sept. 7 from 3-4:30 p.m. in the foyer of the College of Business. Gene Smith, instructor of accounting in the College of Business, was selected to receive the New Mexico Society of Certified Public Accountants' Outstanding Accounting Educator award.

Dr. Donald C. Elder III, professor of history, recently presented two papers. On July 21 he spoke to the Southeast Iowa Civil War Roundtable in Ottumwa, Iowa. His paper was titled "The Fire in the Rear: Anti-war Activism in Iowa During the Civil War." On July 22 he presented "A Change of Fortune: Mary Kemper Vermilion's Years in Appanoose County" to the Appanoose County Historical Society in Centerville, Iowa.

ENMU Video Airing on Amarillo TV Stations – The 30-minute "Touring Your Future" show, which features ENMU and other educational institutions, is airing again in July and August on KAMR, KCIT and KCPN TV stations in Amarillo. ENMU also has a 30-second spot which will air 50 times on the three stations.

Number Changed for Employees to Make Long Distance Calls While Traveling – For the past three years, Eastern New Mexico University employees traveling outside of the local calling area could dial an 800 number and use their long distance authorization code and a four-digit PIN (Personal Identification Number) to make long distance calls. These calls would be billed to their department. On June 26 a new toll-free number will be activated for this purpose, eliminating the need to enter the PIN. After this date, the previous toll-free number will no longer be used. This toll-free service should only be used outside our local calling area.
To use the new toll-free access:

Dial 1.866.788.7016 and you will hear dial tone.

Dial * 6 * + authorization code + # (sign) + 6 + area code and phone number.
(This is the same dialing sequence that is used when you are on campus)

Charges for these calls will appear on your department bill.

Academic Affairs Announces Changes – Academic Affairs has announced the following changes:

I. Reorganization within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (effective FY06):

A. Psychology and Political Science
The disciplines within the former Department of Social & Behavioral Sciences will be reduced to Psychology and Political Science. The unit's new title is Department of Psychology and Political Science.

B. Social Work
The Social Work faculty will join with Communicative Disorders in a Department of Health and Human Services.

C. Nursing Program
We are searching for a new director of the Nursing completion program who will also be the director of Roswell's associate program in Nursing. The new director will be located in Roswell and will report directly to the CLAS dean regarding the BSN program and its students.

D. Criminal Justice and Sociology
These faculty have joined with the History and Humanities faculty in what will be the Department of History, Humanities and Social Sciences.

II. Appointments:

Students Must Be Advised Before Registering – Please remember that all new students (both freshmen and transfers) and those who have not declared a major must make an appointment with the Advising Center prior to registration. Walk-in registration will be accommodated when possible, but for the students' convenience, we encourage students to make an appointment. All continuing undergraduate students must consult an academic advisor prior to registering. For distance education students, this means that advising is handled electronically via telephone or e-mail.

Leadership ENMU Sponsoring Scholarship Golf Tournament on August 27 – The 2004-05 Leadership ENMU group is sponsoring a scholarship golf tournament on Saturday, Aug. 27, at the Clovis Municipal Golf Course. The entry fee will be $200 per four-member team, which includes green fees and golf carts. It will be a "scramble" format in which each team member hits their shot from the spot of the player with the best previous shot.

Tentatively, Leadership ENMU is considering awarding an ENMU scholarship to one student from Curry County and one student from Roosevelt County. For more information, contact Wendel Sloan at 562.2253 or e-mail wendel.sloan@enmu.edu.

Helpdesk Summer Hours for University Computer Center – In between semesters, 8 a.m. to noon and 1-5 p.m. on Monday-Friday. During the summer sessions, the Helpdesk hours will be 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday-Friday. Time changes are effective May 16.

Work Orders Should Now Be Submitted Online – If you will begin at ENMU home page/campus services/ additional services/ Physical Plant, you will see a link on the left that says Work Orders. You have the capability of tracking your work orders with this system. You will receive an e-mail saying it has been accepted or rejected and another e-mail when work is completed. If you have any questions, please call the Physical Plant at 562.2511.

Campus Police Provides Escort Service for Students – If a student needs an escort to their car, dorm or classroom, ENMU has an escort service available during the hours of darkness. For escort services, call Campus Police at 760.2945.

How to Reach Campus Police After Hours – To reach the Campus Police Officer on duty after 5 p.m., before 8 a.m. and all day Saturday and Sunday you can call the officer on his cell phone number at 760.2945. If for some reason you are unable to reach the officer on that number, call the Portales Police Department at 356.4404 extension 0. The dispatcher will then send a Campus Officer to your destination to assist you.

Construction Underway on New Health Sciences Center

Construction has begun on the new Health Sciences Center on the Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell campus. The new 38,000 square foot building will consolidate all of the health programs under one roof. The project calls for the renovation and expansion of a former Walker Air Force Base building on the south end of campus.

Construction is expected to take about one year, and university officials hope to begin classes in the new building in fall of 2006. The $7 million project is being funded through a $3 million statewide general obligation bond issue passed by voters in 2004 and a portion of an $8.1 million local bond issue passed by Chaves County voters in 2003.

According to Jane Batson, Division of Health Chair, enrollment in healthcare programs at the university has grown 76 percent over the past five years. Batson said the largest first year nursing class in the history of the campus will be starting this fall semester. “We’re thrilled to see construction in progress and to know that we will be able to meet the increasing demands in our region for healthcare professionals,” she said.

ENMU-Roswell Holds Special Services Graduation

The Special Services Occupational Training Program will hold its Eighteenth Annual Graduation ceremony on Thursday, July 28. The ceremony will begin at 2:00 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center on campus. The featured speaker will be Shill Breedyck, Supervisor of Patient Billing at Eastern New Mexico Medical Center.

About 50 students will graduate from the program in a number of areas, including auto mechanics, child care, office skills, nursing assistant and food service. Two graduating students, Timothy Haris and Jadanne Wilson, will also speak during the ceremony.

Dr. Judy Armstrong, provost, will welcome parents and the graduating class. Dr. Dwight Rogers, Dean of Instruction, Denise McGhee, Director of Special Services, and the Special Services faculty from the various occupational training programs will present Certificates of Completion to the students. A reception will immediately follow the ceremony.

Established 18 years ago, the Special Services program attracts students with disabilities from all across the country, training them in a number of occupational areas. Students are also provided with various adaptive equipment and other services on campus to help them reach their academic goals. After graduation, most students are able to find employment and live independently.

Kirtland AFB Pararescue Candidates Graduated

A group of 21 United States Air Force pararescue candidates from Kirtland Air Force Base graduated with Certificates of Completion in Paramedic during a ceremony on Wednesday, July 20 at 6 p.m. in the ENMU-Roswell Occupational Technology Center Seminar Room. One civilian student will also graduate during the ceremony.

Since January, the parajumpers or “PJ” students have been enrolled in an accelerated paramedic training program on campus taught by ENMU-Roswell Emergency Medical Services (EMS) instructors. The students have completed 62 credit hours of training and recently returned from six weeks of clinical field experience in Orlando, Florida. While there, they worked with the Orange County Fire and Rescue Department and in a number of regional medical centers.

On Friday, July 22, the graduates took the National Registry Exam and, for those who passed, will start the pararescue apprenticeship course at Kirtland AFB in Albuquerque. This is the final stage of the training pipeline that for some of the men has taken two years to complete. Following the apprenticeship period, the men will graduate in March of 2006 with the maroon beret and will then be assigned to one of only six pararescue military units in the country. They will then be deployed to support troop missions fighting the war on terrorism in places like Afghanistan and Iraq. Those missions will include rescuing and caring for pilots and soldiers who fall behind enemy lines and providing medical treatment to civilians.

ENMU-Roswell Offering New Fall Courses

Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell is offering two new Heating, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Technology courses this coming fall semester. A Basic Electric and Control class will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-8:30 p.m. A Fundamentals of Refrigeration class will be held Mondays and Wednesdays from 6-8:30 p.m. These introductory courses are included in two new certificates and an associate’s degree currently under development.

“The HVACR industry is rapidly growing and offers very competitive wages,” said Dusty Heritage, Associate Dean of Career and Technical Education. “Certified techs can specialize in a variety of areas—service, installation, food services, residential, commercial, or industrial,” she said. Word series – Paste Special
When you are in a Word document and pasting something you have copied from another document, or from a web page or other source, more often than not you want the formatting to match the destination document rather than the source. From the Edit menu, use Paste Special instead of Paste. The Paste Special window that opens gives you several options. Choose Unformatted Text to have your pasted content take on the formatting of the paragraph it is pasted into. If you have Word 2002 (in Office XP), pasting is even more flexible. In this case the choice you want is called Match Destination Formatting.

Outlook series – Saving an email in the Draft folder
Have you started an e-mail message and did not have time to finish and you need to come back to it later? To save the unfinished message to the Draft folder area, press and hold down the Ctrl key, then press the S key (Ctrl-S). This will place the message in the Draft folder where you can come back later, click on the message in the Draft folder area and continue typing your message.

NM Real Estate Commission Mandatory Course (8 Mandatory Credit Hours) will be held Friday, July 22, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. for $75 with an on-your-own lunch.

Brokerage Relationships (4 Education Credit Hours) will be held Saturday, July 23, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. for $50. Please register by July 19.

Kids' College - Melinda Ramirez is back as Lead Teacher for eight theme-packed weeks, Monday-Thursday., 8 a.m.-5 p.m., June 6-July 29. Daily activities including computers and swimming plus lunch delivered by Portales Public Schools are routine with a few field trips and a year-end variety show scheduled as well. The fee is $60 per week with payment confirming your child's spot for the summer's fun, so enroll today!

Aqua Aerobics - Alisha Eldridge, Red Cross Certified Lifeguard, will offer eight, two-day rotations at the Natatorium this summer, Tuesday/Thursday, 6:30-7:20 p.m., June 7-July 28. The fee is discounted to $60 for all eight rotations or pay $8 per rotation each Tuesday.
