ENMU Names
New Director of Nursing – Jan Meyers is the
new interim director of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing-Completion
Program at Eastern New Mexico University. A search is being conducted
for a permanent director.
Ms. Meyers will continue being a full-time faculty member in nursing
at ENMU-Roswell, while assisting New Mexico registered nurses to
transition into the BSN completion program at ENMU-Portales. Her
office will be located on the Roswell campus.
A former faculty member at San Juan College in New Mexico and a
clinical nurse specialist in a hospital emergency room in California,
Ms. Meyers has a master's in nursing from Kansas University Medical
Center. She first began at ENMU-Roswell in 1988 as an adjunct faculty
member. She left in 1991, and returned in 2002.
"We hope to have a booming enrollment," says Ms. Meyers
of the free-tuition nursing classes which will be offered at a number
of sites through two-way video conferencing. "Some of our students
will actually be able to take all the courses they need at their
work site to earn a bachelor's degree. This will save them time
and travel costs," says Ms. Meyers.
The BSN-Completion program is open to all registered nurses currently
registered in New Mexico and will be offered
at a number of videoconferencing sites including Clovis Community
College, New Mexico Junior College, ENMU-Ruidoso, the ENMU-Roswell
Artesia Workforce Center, Eastern New Mexico Medical Center in Roswell,
and ENMU in Portales.
"This is a wonderful opportunity for nurses in our area to
advance their education and training without leaving home,"
says Ms. Meyers.
Ms. Meyers notes that Tammy Lueras, RN, MSN, and Jane Batson, RN,
MA, in the ENMU-Roswell Division of Health will assist her until
a new nursing director is named.
ENMU Offering
Free Tuition for Bachelor of Science in Nursing Completion Program
– The Eastern New Mexico University Bachelor
of Science in Nursing (BSN)-Completion program is gearing up to
address the needs of Registered Nurses in Southeastern New Mexico
who want to complete a BSN close to home and at the lowest cost
possible. Tuition is free for the BSN-Completion classes.
Under the guidance of the ENMU-Roswell Division of Health, the program
will provide all classes via videconferencing to locations in a
number of communities. Those locations include: Clovis Community
College, New Mexico Junior College, ENMU-Ruidoso, the ENMU-Roswell
Artesia Workforce Center, Eastern New Mexico Medical Center in Roswell,
and ENMU in Portales.
The introductory class, “BSN Basics,” taught by Jan
Meyers, RN, MSN, will be offered via videoconferencing to all sites
on May 21 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Assignments in the class must be
completed by June 4.
The BSN-Completion program is open to all registered nurses currently
registered in New Mexico. The following steps should be completed:
1. Send applications to ENMU-Portales and the BSN-completion program
2. Send official transcripts to ENMU-Portales
3. Complete California Critical Thinking Skills Test
4. Send a letter of intent to the BSN program office along with
3 letters of reference
5. Send an official degree plan in collaboration with the BSN program
director or her designee.
6. Have documentation of current CPR certification: adult, child,
and infant
“Although the initial steps sound daunting, representatives
from the program and the faculty are easily accessible to answer
questions, assist students with the application process, and get
them started on the road to success,” said Ms. Meyers.
For more information, contact Jan Meyers, RN, MSN, Tamaliah Lueras,
RN, MSN, or, Jane Batson, RN, MA, at the ENMU-Roswell Division of
Health, 505.624.7235 or toll free at 1.800.243.6687, extension 235.

ENMU-Roswell
News
The ENMU Center of Teaching Excellence
has awarded a $1000 grant to the ‘Roswell Reads Beyond Courage’
program sponsored by the High Plains Writing Project. Annemarie
Oldfield, Project Coordinator and ENMU-Roswell English instructor,
said the funds will be used to purchase copies of the book, Beyond
Courage to donate to local schools and organizations, acquire promotional
materials, and provide a stipend for the speaker.
This university initiated One Book, One Community project began
with a kickoff celebration on March 1 featuring a presentation by
Beyond Courage author, Dorothy Cave. A panel discussion with WWII
veterans and Bataan survivors was held March 8 at NMMI. A public
discussion of the book will be held March 15 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00
p.m. at the Roswell Public Library’s Bondurant Room. A Wrap-Up
celebration is scheduled for March 22 at 7:00 p.m. at the Roswell
Museum and Art Center.
According to Oldfield, the project has the following purposes:
· To encourage participation by the community at large in
reading and discussing a book.
· To encourage and facilitate teachers’ use of oral
history and interview in the classroom.
· To foster relationships between classrooms and the community.
· To provide a forum for literate public discussion
· To provide information about other literacy opportunities
in Roswell and the surrounding communities
· To demonstrate how literature can stimulate inquiry among
students, teachers, and the general public
The co-sponsors of the Roswell Reads project are ENMU-Roswell, Roswell
Public Library, Roswell Literacy Council, Roswell Sertoma, and New
Mexico Military Institute.

The Automotive Technology Program at ENMU-Roswell
recently acquired two more vehicles for its training fleet,
thanks to the staff at Roswell Honda (one of Krumland Automotive
Resources family of dealerships). Ray Torrez and Troy Sutherland,
ENMU-Roswell Automotive Technology instructors, accepted the keys
to a 1990 Honda Civic and a 1990 Honda Prelude at the Roswell Honda
Dealership on March 7.
Jim Collins, Roswell Honda Service Manager, helped to arrange the
donation and shipment of the vehicles from the American Honda service
and training facility in Denver, Colorado. Collins said even though
the cars are 15 years old, they were kept indoors and only used
for training purposes in Denver, so they are almost like brand new
vehicles. The Prelude had only 34 miles when it arrived in Roswell
and the Civic’s mileage was 1,098. The interiors and exteriors
of both vehicles are spotless. Collins said Roswell Honda has made
improvements in its Customer Service Index and the district office
wanted to do something nice for the community. At his urging, ENMU-Roswell
was chosen from among schools in 8 states in the district to receive
the vehicle donation.
“This is a wonderful gift to our students and will enhance
their knowledge and training,” said Dr. Judy Armstrong, ENMU-Roswell
Provost. Tom Krumland, owner of Krumland Automotive Resources, said
he is pleased to be able to support the Automotive Technology program
and looks forward to seeing more certified technicians produced.
Torrez said the students are excited about working with Hondas.
Prior to this donation, the program had only Ford, Chrysler and
GM vehicles available for hands-on training.
The Automotive Technology program at ENMU-Roswell has earned the
highest level of achievement recognized by the National Institute
for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE). ASE certification is conducted
under the supervision of the National Automotive Technicians Education
Foundation (NATEF). The primary mission of NATEF is to improve the
quality of automotive technician training programs nationwide through
voluntary certification. NATEF is responsible for the program evaluation
process and makes recommendations for program certification based
on the evaluation.

Governor Bill Richardson has announced
that the Film Technicians Training Program, a statewide program
designed to prepare New Mexicans for careers in the film industry,
is coming to southeastern New Mexico. The three-semester program
is scheduled to begin at Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell on
March 19.
“Expanding access to this important program will help us fill
the growing demand for qualified technicians in New Mexico,”
said Governor Richardson. “Our thriving film industry means
high-wage jobs and opportunities for people across the state. As
we expand into digital media technologies and production, the need
for trained workers will multiply.”
There is still time to register for the Film Technicians Training
Program for this spring at ENMU-Roswell. Students can register through
March 19 for "Introduction to Film Production," which
is the first of three 9-credit hour classes, each running for 13
weeks. The introductory class will meet every Saturday from 9:00
a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and then again on Tuesday evenings from 6:30
p.m. to 9:30 p.m. through May 14.
Courses will be taught by instructors who are union members and
active in the film industry and facilitated by ENMU-Roswell film
instructor, Alan Trever. Many of the instructors will have just
finished work on the feature film “First Snow”, which
is currently shooting in Albuquerque. "ENMU-Roswell is pleased
and proud to become the third school in the state of New Mexico
to host the Film Technicians Training Program,” said Dr. Judy
Armstrong, Provost, ENMU-Roswell. “This is an outstanding
opportunity for our students and graduates to 'hit the ground running'
in a high-skill, high-demand career field. It is also a gigantic
step forward for our state and local economic development efforts.
We appreciate the work done by our faculty member, Alan Trever,
to form this partnership, and we are excited about the program's
potential. We look forward to working with the state to promote
and expand the film industry in the state."
Although classes from the very beginning will be practical and hands-on,
in the third semester, ENMU-Roswell will partner with Technical
Vocational Institute in Albuquerque to actually produce a film.
Once students complete the required courses, they will have the
option of submitting an application to the International Alliance
of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) Local 480 for union membership.
Students are encouraged to register in advance but can register
on the first day of class, Saturday, March 19, at 9 a.m. Students
will initially meet in Room 129 of the Learning Resource Center
on campus. For more information, contact Alan Trever at 624.7045.

Studies Lab, have recently been accepted for publication.

novella, Papa Loaty, for publication in their anthology Poe’s
Progeny to appear in mid-2005. This is a tale set in New Mexico,
and concerns a haunted windmill. The same British publisher has
accepted Burleson’s short story Up and About for an upcoming
issue of their horror magazine Fusing Horizons.
The new U.S. magazine Inhuman has accepted Burleson’s existentialist
horror story “Mandy-Lu,” his second appearance in the
magazine. Also, the U.S. magazine Bare Bone, in which both Burleson
and his wife Mollie have appeared before, has accepted both a story
by Dr. Burleson and a story by Mollie Burleson for an upcoming issue.
Dr. Burleson has published over 100 short stories, three novels,
and three book length collections of short stories, as well as over
a hundred journal articles and several nonfiction books in the fields
of literary criticism and UFO studies. His most recent nonfiction
book is UFOs and the Murder of Marilyn Monroe. Burleson and his
wife met at a horror convention in Rhode Island in 1979, and both

Helpful Hints for using ENMU Technology (courtesy of ITS Computing)
Computing
Word series – If Word changes your formatting without your
permission
There is a little “feature” in Word which can automatically
updating your styles for you. Unfortunately, this is more of a headache
than a feature. If you find that when you change some formatting
(for instance, making some text bold), Word changes all of your
text instead of just the text you had highlighted, this is your
culprit. To fix it:
1. From the Format menu, choose Style. In the list on the left,
select Normal, and then click on the Modify button.
2. Uncheck the “Automatically update” box. (If the “Automatically
update” box is not checked, then this style is not the problem.
Go back to the list, choose a different style, and repeat the process.)
3. Click OK, and then click Apply.
Outlook series – Signatures
If you create signatures through the Tools | Options dialog, OE
has a Signatures tab, but you will find Outlook signatures under
the Mail Format tab. If you create more than one signature, you
choose the one that will be the default via the Set as Default button
in OE and the Signature Picker button in Outlook. In both programs,
you can have the default signature inserted into each e-mail message
automatically, or you can have no signatures appended automatically
and select the one you wish through the Insert | Signature menu
command. You can opt to omit signatures from replies and forwards.
DAT file version update – To check that your
computer is up-to-date with the most current versions of virusscan
software, locate the blue and white shield with a red “V”
in it by your system clock on the bottom right side of your screen
and click on it with the right mouse button. Then choose “About
VirusScan Enterprise” in the pull-down box. There are two
things to look for; one is the “Virus Definitions” which
should be at 4444 and the other is the “Scan Engine”
which should be at 4.4.00 (4400). If either one is not displaying
the above versions, please contact the Helpdesk at 562.4357 for
assistance.
