Remarks from President
Gamble at Graduation About Recipients of Presidential Excellence
Awards
Dr. Nina Bjornsson – Presidential Award for Excellence in
Advising
"Dr. Bjornsson, assistant professor of English
and Graduate Coordinator in the Department of Languages and Literature,
has been involved in all levels of advising during her six years
at ENMU. For her, advising has been a natural extension of teaching
and an integral part of ensuring student success.
" As Graduate Coordinator she has the responsibility of advising
all of the program’s Masters’ level students, and she
has served as Thesis Chair of the lion’s share of our recent
graduates. Not surprisingly, she had demonstrated her commitment
to 'go the extra mile' by serving as an advisor for new students
in ENMU’s Advising Center. In each of these roles, Dr. Bjornsson
has been a model of excellent advising and commitment to student
success."
Dr. Bill Brunsen – Presidential Award for Excellence in Service
"Dr. Brunsen is well known across campus for his service activities
in his 18 years at Eastern. Faculty Senate president multiple times,
he has also served as a department chair, associate dean or graduate
coordinator in the College of Business for 14 of his 18 years at
Eastern New Mexico University. On the behalf of the college, he
has also chaired the Recruiting Committee and has served as coordinator
of all internship activities.
"Dr. Brunsen has also been active in his professional associations
and the community. He served for three years as president of Delta
Mu Delta, the business honor society. Dr. Brunsen’s extensive
community activity includes serving as a board member of the Roosevelt
County Chapter of the American Red Cross, and, more importantly,
as a member of the disaster relief team where he would go out and
provide immediate relief to victims of house fires. In all areas
he has a reputation for being well prepared, holding everyone to
high standards, and being a tireless worker."
Mr. Dustin Seifert – Presidential Award for Excellence in
Teaching
"One student who recommended Mr. Seifert for the excellence
in teaching award wrote, 'Dustin Seifert, as a teacher, is the model
of everything I desire to become as a future educator. His refined
communication skills, open-minded cooperation with other faculty
and administration and a tireless work ethic make him a consummate
educator.'
"This sentiment was echoed by a colleague who observed: 'Dustin
has exceeded his colleagues in his passion for teaching and his
extraordinary ability to communicate information in the most understandable
and organized manner.'
”Since his arrival at Eastern, Dustin Seifert
has excelled not only in front of his ensembles but also in the
classroom. In addition to teaching his music classes, he has, for
four of his five years at Eastern, taught a freshmen seminar course
because he 'enjoys interacting with new students, keeping current
with regard to social changes, and building the ENMU family.' Overall
student evaluations of Mr. Seifert’s teaching have been among
the highest in his department, and rightly so."
Dr. Michael Shaughnessy – Presidential Award for Excellence
in Scholarship
"A professor in Educational Studies and Special Education,
Dr. Michael Shaughnessy has served the university and College of
Education and Technology since 1983. He received his doctorate from
the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, Nebraska. Since his initial
employment, Dr. Shaughnessy has consistently contributed research
and literature in his discipline of special education.
"Dr. Shaughnessy is currently Consultant Editor of Gifted Education
International and on the Editorial Board of Educational Psychology
Review. He has done post-doctoral work in special education at Texas
Tech in Lubbock and is currently doing post-doctoral work in special
education through George Washington University.
He serves the State of New Mexico on the Governor’s Traumatic
Brain Injury Advisory Council and The Gifted Education Advisory
Board. Dr. Shaughnessy is also a columnist for Education News.org,
the number one rated internet site for education."

Most ENMU-Portales Employees Taking Off Friday Afternoon, May 27
– Governor Richardson asked all state agencies to give employees
four hours off work in memory of Pope John Paul II. The University
excused those employees who wanted to take off the day of the Pope's
funeral and established that the remainder of the employees would
be given four hours off in May.
Those hours will be taken on Friday, May 27, from 1-5 p.m. However,
all offices that provide direct services to students need to remain
open. Those employees will be allowed to take the four hours off
at another time with approval of their supervisors. Any employee
who already observed those hours will be expected to be at work.
All offices should check with their vice presidents to see if their
office needs to remain open.
ENMU Closed for Memorial
Day on Monday, May 30 – Eastern New Mexico
University will be closed for Memorial Day on Monday, May 30. The
campus will reopen on Tuesday, May 31.
ENMU-Roswell Closed
on Friday, May 27, and Monday, May 30, for Memorial Day
– ENMU-Roswell employees will take four hours off (8 a.m.
to noon) granted through the Governor's executive order in memory
of Pope John Paul II on Friday, May 27. Because the campus is normally
open from 8 a.m. to noon on Fridays, the campus will be essentially
closed on May 27, with the exception of the Child Development Center.
Areas normally open on Saturday and Sunday will be open on May 28
and 29. The pool will open for the summer on May 28.
The Roswell campus will be closed on Monday, May 30, in observance
of Memorial Day and no classes will be held. Classes will resume
and the campus will re-open on Tuesday, May 31.
Students May Register Now for Summer
and Fall – The first summer term at Eastern
begins June 6. Currently enrolled students may register now for
the summer or fall terms.

Greyhound Football Team
Gives Back to Community – Since January Eastern’s
football team has been voluntarily doing community service throughout
the city. Ninety football players were split into teams of 10 with
a captain and a lieutenant to compete in the Spring Challenge.
Each team acquired points by assisting the community in various
ways and receiving a certain amount of points. The groups went around
the community doing good deeds, including: assisting the P.E. class
at Lindsey Middle School, mowing lawns, washing cars, judging the
Spanish Fair at ENMU, doing various jobs at the Baptist Children’s
Home, working in the Community Action Day and assisting Dr. Megan
Chilson with National P.E. day.
Head Coach Mark Ribaudo says, “Giving to the community is
very rewarding. We consider ourselves a part of the community and
want to help in anyway we can.''
Coach Ribaudo adds, “The kids were very creative about ideas
to help the community and we are very proud of them.”
The three top teams in points were cooked a steak dinner donated
by Scott, Don and Steve Davis. The rest of the groups did various
duties around the fieldhouse and weight room.
The Portales City Council and the Mayor recognized the football
team for their efforts and rewarded them with a certificate. –

If you will be traveling during the summer and using your Purchasing

have your Purchasing Card Statement and itemized receipts turned
in to the Business Office by designated due dates. If you have charges,
a Purchasing Card Statement will be sent to your e-mail.
Please give me a call if you have any questions
Thank you,

Message from President
Regarding Realignments – After reviewing the
comments that were expressed by faculty and staff regarding the
realignment proposed in the e-mail dated April 19, 2005, I have
decided to recommend the following to the Board of Regents, effective
July 1, 2005.
1. Campus Police - Change in Reporting Line: From VPSA to VPBA
2. KENW - Change in Reporting Line: From VPAA to VPURES
3. Athletics - Change in Reporting Line: From President to VPSA
4. Faculty Resource Center - Change in Reporting Line: From Library
to Extended Learning
5. Ruidoso Campus - Change in Reporting Line: From VPAA to President
6. Grants and Contracts - Change in Reporting Line: From President
to Executive Director, Planning and Analysis
7. Retention Initiative - Office of Responsibility: Executive Director,
Planning and Analysis
It was decided to maintain Media Services' reporting relationship
to the Library, but to move the responsibilities for the "smart"
classrooms and other IT - related items to Information Technology
Services.
Advising and Freshman Studies will move to the Retention Initiative
which will report to Dr. Patrice Caldwell. A new position entitled
director of Retention Activities has been established to coordinate
initiatives aimed at improving student success.
The most comments received were in regard to the move of Grants
and Contracts from the president to the executive director of Planning
and Analysis. I believe the location of the grants coordinator is
much less important than the quality and dedication of the person
who will hold the position. Thus far, our search for the grants
coordinator has been unsuccessful, but we will attempt to offer
good service through people in the Business Office until we can
employ the right person. Please be assured that the area of grants
and contracts will continue to be a priority at the University.
I thank those of you who offered input. Please call me if you have
further questions or comments.

ENMU-Roswell Hosts ParaRescue Students
by Donna Gutierrez
ENMU-Roswell
United States Air Force ParaRescue students from Kirtland Air Force
Base in Albuquerque took part in a simulated mass casualty incident
in ‘battlefield’ conditions (smoke, pyrotechnics) on
Wednesday, May 18, in the field behind the Occupational Technology
Center at ENMU-Roswell.
|

The incident involved an airplane crash
at an air show with multiple "victims." The "victims"
were cadets with the New Mexico Youth ChalleNGe Academy, who are
currently taking EMT-Basic classes. Members of the Heaton family,
which includes three children, also participated as "victims."
The PJ students were evaluated on their plan of action in treating
the victims and how well they communicated and executed their plan.
Background:
Since January, the “PJ” students have been enrolled
in an accelerated paramedic training program taught by ENMU-Roswell
Emergency Medical Services (EMS) instructors.
The PJ’s will travel to Orlando, Fla., soon for six weeks
of intense field and clinical practicum. They will return to Roswell
for two weeks of review classes to prepare for the National Registry
of EMT Paramedic exam. After earning their certification, they will
then return to Kirtland Air Force Base to complete an apprenticeship
period. The students will then be assigned to one of only six pararescue
military units in the country. They will then be deployed to support
troop missions fighting the war on terrorism in places like Afghanistan
and Iraq. Those missions will include rescuing and caring for pilots
and soldiers who fall behind enemy lines and providing medical treatment
to civilians.
This unique consortium arrangement was completed in 2002 to allow
ENMU-Roswell to provide sponsorship to the U.S. Air Force ParaRescue

TechTips
Helpful Hints for using ENMU Technology (courtesy of ITS
Computing)
Computing
Excel series –Adjusting Column Widths and Heights
Working with Excel can be tricky. If you click one column one way
you decrease or increase the width or height of the other rows.
This can be irritating if you want consistency, but this can be
fixed. If you want to get real precise about defining your column
widths or heights follow these steps:
• Click the row or column you want to modify.
• Choose Format pick Row or Column and then chose width or
height. A box should appear.
• Type the precise number that you want to change the width
or height to.
Powerpoint series – Printing an Outline
How annoying is it when you go to print on power point and it prints
a slide per page? What if you do not want to have all the pictures
and text setup? If you are just wanting the information there is
an easier way. You can print an outline of the text inside your
slide show. To do this create or open the presentation you want
to print.
• In normal view, click the Outline tab in the left pane,
and then on the Standard toolbar, click Expand All to show just
the slide titles or all levels of text. (If Expand All isn't on
the toolbar, click the arrow at the end of the toolbar, point to
Add or Remove Buttons, point to Standard, and then click Expand
All.
• On the File menu, click Print Preview. In the Print What
box, click Outline View On the Print Preview toolbar, click Print
DAT file version update – To check that your
computer is up-to-date with the most current versions of virusscan
software, locate the blue and white shield with a red “V”
in it by your system clock on the bottom right side of your screen
and click on it with the right mouse button. Then choose “About
VirusScan Enterprise” in the pull-down box. There are two
things to look for; one is the “Virus Definitions” which
should be at 4497 and the other is the “Scan Engine”
which should be at 4.4.00 (4400). If either one is not displaying
the above versions, please contact the Helpdesk at 562.4357 for
assistance.
