The University of New Mexico Science and Technology Corporation (STC) has agreed to commercialize a technology developed by two Eastern New Mexico University professors. Dr. Robert Long, assistant professor of chemistry, and Dr. Newton Hilliard, assistant professor of chemistry/graduate coordinator for chemistry, at ENMU have synthesized new compounds for use as biological buffers.robert longnewt hilliard
The agreement enables STC to take the technology through the patenting process, and to begin researching markets. “STC is very pleased that we can be of assistance to one of UNM's sister institutions in the state of New Mexico,” says Lisa Kuuttila, president and CEO of STC. “Since we have a comprehensive infrastructure in place for serving the University of New Mexico in the commercialization of its technology, we can effectively provide these services to ENMU.”

The new buffers exhibit desirable properties at lower pH levels and have significant advantages over those currently available. The discovery of the compounds occurred while the doctors were investigating alternate production methodologies for biological buffers.

Dr. Long says, “The chemistry faculty at ENMU is happy to have an avenue for commercialization of our research work with the cooperation of UNM and STC. We are hopeful that this invention will provide additional tools to researchers and laboratories for conducting work at low pH levels.”

STC is a non-profit corporation formed by and wholly owned by the University of New Mexico to protect and transfer intellectual property and faculty inventions to the commercial marketplace. As STC has evolved as a unique entity, the corporation not only assists UNM faculty, but students, outside inventors and entrepreneurs.

For more information about this technology, contact Karol-Lynn Reed at 505.272.7346.

ENMU Professor Receives Internal Grant to Study Design of Viologen-Functionalized Monolayers on Gold...

(Editor's Note: This is an ongoing Monday Memo series looking at the projects of ENMU professors who have received internal grants to further their work. Today, we look at the proposal of assistant professor of chemistry Dr. Juchao Yan's "Design of Viologen-Functionalized Monolayers on Gold for Direct Transduction of Biorecognition." )

The motivation of the proposed research is to develop juchao yana novel approach of forming molecular assemblies on surfaces for direct transduction of biorecognition. Specifically, a transducer molecule with immobilized viologen and biotin groups will be formed on gold by performing reactions on preformed monolayers to modify the surface chemistry, instead of synthesizing this complicated molecule.

The expected outcome of the proposed research includes the following: 1) the development of surface derivatization methodologies for viologen- and biotin-functionalized monolayers; 2) the demonstration of a prototypical electrochemical biosensor for direct transduction of biorecognition. A feature of this transduction setting it from all other electrochemical detection schemes is the modularity (i.e., the potential use with a wide range of affinity receptors for detection and quantitation of various chemical analytes). Such modularity may prove uniquely well-suited to simultaneous detection of multiple analytes.

This proposal will involve materials synthesis and characterization, fundamental study of charge transport and transduction mechanism, and development efforts towards the biosensing application in real systems. This will be a collaborative effort with Dr. López in the Department of Chemical and Nuclear Engineering at the University of New Mexico.

Registrar to Retire After 36 Years
by Marc Schoder
Communication Services

Betty Crane, Registrar at Eastern New Mexico University, is retiring on Jan. 19 after a total of 36 years at Eastern.betty crane

“I have truly enjoyed my time working here at Eastern and will miss the entire university community when I leave,” says Betty. One thing that I wished that I had done was to keep a diary that included the names of all the employees that I worked with and notes of all the good, fun times that was enjoyed and shared by all."

She has had two stints of employment at Eastern: first, working as a secretary in the Admissions Office from 1965-1972, then in 1977 as a secretary for the dean of Admissions and Records. In 1983, she became the office manager for the Registrar’s Office, then worked her way up to Associate Registrar and then Registrar.

Betty says that she intends on enjoying the true meaning of retirement. “I am going to relax, react to any opportunity that arises, enjoy the moment, and spend more time with the grandbaby,” she says.

Betty says that her husband, Bobby, a former Portales High School football coach, is also looking forward to her retirement. He is currently semi-retired and works part-time as a science teacher at the junior high.

Betty’s former and current co-workers say that they will miss her.

“I worked with Betty for seven years in the Registrar's Office,” said Rhobetty cranenda Garcia, ebetty cranexecutive secretary in Student Affairs and one of Betty’s former employees. “She is a wonderful person, not to mention a great supervisor and work companion.”

Margaret Estrada, Student Records Clerk, agrees. “I will have to say she has been the best boss I have ever had because she trusts me with making decisions, she never criticizes me, she never scolds me and never, ever makes me feel less important than she is.

“Betty allows me to try new things in the office and with me being the “Question Asker” that I am, she always explains things to me – then lets me try them. If I don’t get it right the first time, she walks me through the plan.

“It will be difficult for me to see her go, but by the same token I’m happy for her. She’s dedicated many years to this university and to the success of the students.  She deserves to rest and relax.”
Rhonda added that one trait about Betty she loved is that she made everyone’s job enjoyable.

“The one thing that I love the most about Betty was that even though we worked very hard during registration and drop and add, we always had a good time,” says Rhonda.

Rhonda adds that when something needed to get done, you would turn to Betty Crane. “She is as efficient, friendly and knowledgeable as they come. I know that every job will be filled when a person leaves, but it will be hard to replace her knowledge, common sense and abilities.

“I know we will probably find a good person for the job, but there is only one Betty Crane.”

Question and Answer Session with Employee Serena Marquez
by Wendel Sloan
Communication Services

Q. When did you come to Eastern and what do you do?

A. I currently work in the Registrar's Office as a Record Clerk, and I'm also one of the V.A Certifying Officials for the Montgomery Gi-Bill. There are currently two V.A Certifying Officials on campus. The other is Margaret Estrada? I have been with Eastern since October 11, 2004.serena marquez

Q.
What did you do before?

A. Before coming to Eastern, I worked at the University Of New Mexico in the Accessibility Services Department as an admin II. I love the campus here compared to UNM! Here, you can find parking!!

Q. What do you like about your job and Eastern? What would you like to see changed?

A. I love my job here at ENMU. I love being involved with the students and the wonderful staff! love the small town hospitality and the sense of family. I would like to see the aggressive diving birds tamed!

Q. Where are you from, and what was your life like growing up? Tell us about your family?

A. I was born and raised in Albuquerque. I'm 32 years old and I have three brothers, one sister, and two sons. I went to Albuquerque High School where I played basketball. Growing up is what I miss: the late summer evenings with friends playing basketball or playing tag, just being a kid. My family is very loving and supportive; my parents are both sixty-five, and I try to cherish every minute of the time I have left with them. I'm the second to the youngest of three boys and one girl. We, like every family, fought constantly and couldn't stand each other, but would defend each other to the death!

Q. What do you like to do outside of work?

A. The only hobby I can say I have is writing poetry. It has been something I started doing my freshman year of high school and continue to do so now. I currently have one poem published with the National Library of Poetry. I would like to continue my poetry for as long as I possibly can.

Q. What kind of music do you like and what is your favorite song?

A. Basically, I love country music, but I have been slowly broadening my taste to different kinds of music. My favorite song right now (next week it will change, stay tuned) would have to be Gary Allen's "Man to Man."serena marquez likes to tell whoppers about the ones that got away

Q. Are you a better cook or dancer?

A. Oh, this is funny! Am I a better cook or dancer? Well, all I can say is that I am the "EXPERT" on dancing around that subject! Plus, I am not allowed in the kitchen.

Q. What is your ideal vacation or retirement spot?

A. Hmmm, the perfect vacation spot? Well, I used to think Cancun, but that got a little re-directed with the weather lately. So I guess for me it would be at home in my pj's with no phone, no work, no worries. And someone that is allowed in the kitchen to cook for me!

Q. What is one thing you would like to do before you die?

A. The thing I would like to do before I die (editor's note: she likes to repeat the questions)? I haven't really thought about that. I mean there is a lot that I would love to do, but I don’t know that I could choose that one thing. I just hope that I can watch my kids get married and maybe be here for a few grandkids.

"Forgiveness Is All I Have"

I thought I caught him by surprise
When I finally called out his name,
But he simply turned to me and said,
"I knew today would be the day."
I tried to make excuses, but
There was nothing I could say.
For in his eyes I saw the truth
No excuse could wash away.
I told him all the things I'd done,
Some good, but mostly bad.
He simply turned to me and said,
"Forgiveness is all I have."
I told him how my heart, it hurt,
How I was lost and all alone,
If he could please forgive me
And if I could come back home.
"I did not choose the roads you picked,
But with you I did walk.
And when you closed your ears to me,
It was with your heart that I did talk!"

By Unknown Artist – This new sculpture on campus, "The Naked Tree" by an unknown artist wearing a Physical Plant shirt, came close to stirring up a protest by the John Birch Society over its scabrous depiction of the timber figure – but the Birchers couldn't agree on which side they were on.

Open Enrollment for the Medical Leave Bank through November 30

Medical Leave Bank Policies Explained

What is the Medical Leave Bank?

The medical leave bank is a pool of hours to which any regular employee who earns medical and/or annual leave may donate some of their accumulated leave hours. The purpose of the medical leave bank is to provide medical leave to contributors who have suffered an unplanned personal illness, injury, disability or quarantine and who have exhausted their compensatory time and medical and annual leave balances.

Who is eligible to join?

Any regular ENMU employee who earns medical and annual leave and has a current medical leave balance of at least six days (hours are prorated for part-time employees) as of September 30, 2005, is eligible to participate in the Bank.

How much do I have to contribute?

Initial contribution is three days if you work full-time; hours are prorated if you work part-time. With prior written notice, the medical leave bank committee may request additional hours from the membership if the hours in the bank fall below one day per member.

Who makes decisions on request for time from the bank?

The medical leave bank is administered by a five-member committee appointed by the President to review requests for withdrawal of medical leave from the bank.

How do I enroll?

The medical leave bank policy, enrollment and request forms are available from the office of Personnel Services, Administration Building, Room 207, or by calling the office at 562.2115. Return completed form to Personnel Services, Station 21, by Nov. 30. Members who have been in the Medical Leave Bank for 30 calendar days are eligible to apply for days from the Bank.

Note: If you are already in the Bank, additional contributions are not needed unless notified by the committee.

Student News

Students in Communication 212 recently competed in three categories of digital photography. The categories were:

CENTER – Students had to center a main subject in the middle of the frame.

OFF-CENTER – Students had to put the same main off-center in the frame. The idea was to experiment with the Rule of Thirds. To summarize the Rule of Thirds in action….imagine a tic-tac-toe grid over a scene. Place the main subject at one of the intersections where the lines of the grid meet. More often than not, you will have created an interestingly and artistically composed shot.

DOG’S EYE VIEW – Students had to shoot something that was no more than 12 inches off the ground. In other words, they had to get down on the ground and think about an interesting shot from that angle.

The top three winners in each category are below.

Eastern New Mexico Fall Handbell Festival

The thirteenth annual Eastern New Mexico Fall Handbell Festival will be held at First United Methodist Church in Portales, 200 S. Ave. C, on Saturday, Nov. 19, with a public concert at 4 p.m. in the church sanctuary. You are invited to hear 90 handbell ringers from eastern New Mexico and west Texas perform massed ringing numbers as well as individual choir and small ensemble solos chosen from classical, folk, holiday, and sacred repertoires. Admission to the concert is free but an offering will be taken to help defray festival expenses.

Guest director Tim Waugh of Bluefield of West Virginia will conduct the mass ringing festival choir and play the organ offertory. Waugh is nationally known as a handbell festival conductor and clinician as well as a composer of choral and handbell music. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in music education from Concord College in WV. Professionally he is a high school choral, music theatre and handbell director, directs summer musical theater productions, and is active as a baritone soloist and recital organist.

Chris Beaty, ENMU Department of Music faculty member, will perform on flute during the concert and William Wood, professor emeritus of music, will accompany the massed choir on organ. A number of other ENMU personnel, students, and retirees will be involved in the event.

Participating handbell ringers will come from Albuquerque, Carlsbad, Clovis, Eunice, Lovington, Portales, and Santa Fe, as well as Levelland, Texas.

TechTips – Helpful Hints for using ENMU Technology (courtesy of ITS Computing)

Computing
Word series – Find Your Place
If you are editing a long document, you may forget where you left off the last time it was open. With Microsoft Word documents, you can pick up where you left off in your last editing session because Word keeps track of the last three locations where you typed or edited text.

Press SHIFT+F5 immediately after opening the document and the cursor will appear at the exact point where you last made a change.

To reach the previous two editing locations, press SHIFT+F5 until you reach the location you want.

Outlook series – Assigning Tasks in Outlook

Do you often ask others to perform specific tasks related to projects or other activities? Most people phone or send a simple email message. A more efficient method is to assign them the task from within Outlook.

ASSIGNING THE TASK:
To assign a task to someone else, click the drop-down arrow underneath the File menu, and select New, Task Request.

File -> New -> Task Request

You will see a screen similar to the New Task screen, but with a To field, where you can specify who to assign the task to. You have numerous options, including Subject, Due and Start dates, Priority, and Status.

RECEIVING TASK ASSIGNMENT:
The assigned users receive a new message in their Inbox stating that a task has been assigned to them and who assigned it. The recipient can click to Accept or Decline the task.
If the user accepts the task, Outlook automatically adds it to their Task List.
TASK COMPLETION:
As the person performs the task and checks it off their task list, an email is sent to the task creator regarding the task's completion.
DAT file version update – To check that your computer is up-to-date with the most current versions of virusscan software, locate the blue and white shield with a red “V” in it by your system clock on the bottom right side of your screen and click on it with the right mouse button. Then choose “About VirusScan Enterprise” in the pull-down box. There are two things to look for; one is the “Virus Definitions” which should be at 4626 and the other is the “Scan Engine” which should be at 4400. If either one is not displaying the above versions, click on the red “V” again with the right mouse button, then choose “Update Now” in the pull-down box. This will open a dialogue box displaying the status of the update process. Once complete, close the dialogue box and rerun the “About VirusScan Enterprise” option as described above. If the version is not at or greater than the one above, please contact the Helpdesk at 562.4357 for assistance.

If you have a tip you would like to share with us please send it to: ENMU.TechTips@enmu.edu
