Professor's Original Play Being Produced on April 26-29
by Ashley Marken
Communication Services

Janeice Scarbrough, chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance at Eastern New Mexico University, will have one of her original plays produced at ENMU. The play, titled “Mia, Emma and Rose,” will run April 26-29 at 8 p.m. in the studio theatre at the University Theatre Center.

“I am a playwright who hasn't been able to see her own work done in some time. I teach playwriting and have been instrumental in my students' plays being seen, so I wanted to get back to my own writing," said Ms. Scarbrough. "We, as a faculty, decided last year that I would have a play done in this slot. I wrote the first draft over the summer, finished draft two over Christmas, and draft three only about a month ago.”

Ms. Scarbrough has written six plays. "Mia, Emma and Rose," directed by Dr. Anne Beck, is about a girl named Rose who comes to New York to find Emma, her birth daughter. Mia, who is looking for her own birth mother, meets the two of them and through their relationship they come to know something about love, family and commitment.

“I have always wanted to explore the issue of adoption – people who choose to search for their birth parents and those who don't. I also love all things Irish and have become very interested in the subject of the Magdalene Asylums – where what the Irish thought of as 'fallen' women were put to do penance. I combined those two areas of interest for this play. It also explores some of Ireland’s murky politics – what the Irish love to call 'the troubles,'" Ms. Scarbrough said.

Ms. Scarbrough has sent the play to theatres where she has connections and it is currently being read by at least two theatres on the East Coast. As for plans for the future Ms. Scarbrough said, “I am a news junkie, actually, and I cannot watch TV without thinking about issues I'd like to explore.”

Ms. Scarbrough added, “I have a very talented director, cast and designers. Theatre is a collaborative art ...what sounds good while I'm writing may not sound so good when the actress says it. The only way you can really know that is to see and hear it.”

Admission will be three dollars at the door.

Gravitational Wave Researcher to Give Public Lecture at ENMU on April 28
by Dr. William Andersen
Assistant Professor of Physics

Although gravity has been studied for more than four centuries, it remains on the frontiers of modern scientific research and discovery.

On Friday, April 28, a worker in this field will visit ENMU and present a public lecture on one of these exciting ventures. Dr. Stephen Lau, currently a postdoctoral fellow at the University of New Mexico, will speak on the topic "Gravitational Waves and Numerical Relativity." The lecture will begin at 5:30 pm in Room 214 of the Science Building at ENMU. Refreshments will be served approximately one hour prior to the talk.

Dr. Lau is researching numerical methods for simulating gravitational waves. Such simulations are necessary for predicting signatures of gravitational waves emitted in various astrophysical events. Dr. Lau has collaborated with researchers worldwide in several areas of general relativity, including concepts of gravitational energy. Prior to his work at the University of New Mexico, he collaborated with Richard Price, a world renowned expert in general relativity at the Center for Gravitational Wave Astronomy at the University of Texas at Brownsville.

In ongoing work with Price, he is developing numerical methods for approximately calculating the gravitational wave signature expected from orbiting black holes.

The field of gravitational wave astronomy promises to be one of the more revolutionary ventures in science as experimentalists around the world vie to be the first to detect the ripples in space and time which constitute these waves. Although not yet directly detected, the existence of gravitational waves has been unambiguously verified by the observation of certain binary star systems whose orbits around each other are seen to lose energy in precise agreement with the predictions of general relativity.

The detection and use of gravitational waves would arguably be the biggest revolution in astronomy since Galileo first turned a telescope to the heavens. Gravitational wave telescopes under development in the United States have a good chance of being the first to detect gravitational waves. The most promising of these, a space borne detector under the auspices of NASA, unfortunately appears scheduled for indefinite postponement due to the redirection of funds towards landing a human on Mars. Even if other countries beat the United States in the race to detect these waves, gravitational wave astronomy will certainly play a key part in the astrophysical research in the United States in 21st century.

Members of the public interested in getting a first-hand account of the science of gravitational wave astronomy are cordially invited to Dr. Stephen Lau's public lecture. Admission is free.

For more information, call Dr. William Andersen, associate professor of physics, at 562.2355.

Employee Briefs

Dr. Caryl Johnson of the Family and Consumer Sciences/Agricultural Department published an article titled "U.S. Teachers Learn About Family Security in Ghana" in the April 2006 issue of the Journal of Family and Consumer Sciences. The article addresses (1) the importance of American educators participating in and observing daily life of the extended compound family in Ghana; and (2) the issue of family security in Ghana.

Dr. Darron L. Smith, Department of Agriculture, had a manuscript published in the Journal of Animal Science titled: Diet-induced alterations in progesterone clearance appear to be mediated by insulin signaling in hepatocytes. This research is a culmination of four separate experiments conducted over three years to investigate the association of progesterone clearance and embryonic survival. The article can be viewed in JAS 84:1102-1109.

Don Morris, professor of accounting and chair of the Department of Accounting, Finance and CISC, has authored a new book called "Opportunity: Optimizing Life's Chances." The description below is from Amazon.

Can you recognize an opportunity when it comes your way? Even though the concept seems fairly basic, most people harbor regrets about missed opportunities that in retrospect might have significantly improved their lives. This book will give you the critical tools to sort through the complexities that often obscure the perception of an opportunity and help you take full advantage of what author Donald Morris calls "high-end opportunities"—pivotal situations that can change your life for the better. Morris begins by developing a model of opportunity in the abstract, analyzing its elements and the contexts and frameworks that affect our recognition of opportunities.

Drawing from a wide range of applications, including investing, business, law, criminology, gambling, and even religion, he shows how opportunities can be defined in various contexts. He also examines highly undesirable situations, where opportunity is lacking, such as poverty and historical instances of slavery, to further illustrate, by way of contrast, the defining characteristics of opportunity. How does a significant opportunity differ from a simple option? How does taking advantage of opportunities differ from being an opportunist? Does our ability to predict the future affect our opportunities? What do we mean by equality of opportunity? By addressing these and other probing questions, Morris shows how to develop more critical perceptions of real opportunities.

About the Author
Donald Morris, CPA, Ph.D. (Los Alamos, NM), is associate professor of accounting and chair of the department of advanced business studies at Eastern New Mexico University. A former owner of a private accounting firm and instructor of philosophy, he is the author of Dewey and the Behavioristic Context of Ethics.

Human Rights Film Series Presenting 'Salt of the Earth' on May 1 – The Human Rights Film Series will present the classic film "Salt of the Earth" at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, May 1, in the Sandia Room of the Campus Union Building. Films are free, open to everyone, and followed by discussion. The film is 94 minutes.

“Salt of the Earth” was filmed in Silver City, N.M. It is the only blacklisted film in U.S. history. The star actress was kicked out of New Mexico before filming was completed. Those who participated in making the film were harassed and intimidated by the FBI, Howard Hughes, the State Department, and others. The story of the labor, intrigue and struggle required to complete the film is as heroic as the struggles for social justice depicted in the film itself, according to Doug Morris, series organizer.

Why the harassment? “Salt of the Earth” is a story about workers' rights, community organizing, democracy and the struggle for freedom from wage slavery.

In a gritty mining town in New Mexico, Mexican-American workers organize and go on strike to protest exploitation, dangerous working conditions, abominable living conditions, and low wages. They meet fierce opposition from company thugs and the local sheriff and his deputies. After harassment, violent beatings, imprisonment and much suffering among the families of the workers, a noble and heroic struggle for freedom and social justice is engaged.

The film was banned in the U.S. for its daring and emancipatory content about workers' rights, women’s rights, ethnic rights, and human rights. The film takes its title from the Gospels, Matthew 5:13.

“Salt of the Earth,” is being shown on May Day in commemoration of International Worker Solidarity Day, itself a commemoration of four U.S. union organizers struggling for the eight-hour day, Albert Parsons, August Spies, Adolf Fischer, and George Engel, who were hanged on Nov. 11, 1887 by the State of Illinois. In 1893 Illinois Governor John Altgeld proclaimed that the men were not guilty but victims of “hysteria, packed juries and a biased judge."

For more information, call Doug Morris at 562.2207 or e-mail doug.morris@enmu.edu or Geni Flores at geni.flores@enmu.edu.

Existing coverage will be automatically transferred to the new plan without a new application for employees who are currently participating. However, UNUM has agreed to offer an open enrollment for coverage up to five times base annual salary with guaranteed approval for coverage up to $100,000. Employees with existing coverage below that amount will be eligible to apply for an increase if interested.

The new plan is offering a decrease in premiums of approximately 10 percent. The primary difference between the new Term Policy and the old Universal Policy is that the Universal Policy (old plan) included the option to attach a savings account to the policy. Employees with existing UNUM saving accounts will receive a one-time payment to close the saving portion of their policies.

Interested employees are asked to stop by the Payroll Office, Admin 117, no later than May 10 for further information on this benefit.

The winner will be announced publicly at a home football game at half-time where their artwork will be displayed on all the Greyhound helmets. They will also be the honorary coach for that game and will receive a plaque.

For more information, contact Molly Hunter at 562.2971 or molly.hunter@enmu.edu.

Ginger's Safety Tip of the Month

Ladder Safety – Careless use and maintenance of ladders and scaffolds are a frequent cause of falls, injuries and, occasionally, deaths. The first important point to remember about ladders is to use them. A chair, table, box, or piece of equipment is not a safe substitute. Don't use a ladder for any other purpose, either. It is not meant to be a platform, scaffold, skid, brace, etc.

It is also important to use the right ladder for the job, one that's long enough and strong enough for your needs. Ladders are rated according to the amount of weight (human and equipment) they can safely hold. Set the ladder on a firm, level surface so the feet are parallel to the surface that the ladder rests against. Position the ladder at the proper angle. Make sure there is clear access at ladder top and bottom. Don't place a ladder in front of a door unless the door is blocked, locked, or guarded.

TechTips – Helpful Hints for using ENMU Technology (courtesy of ITS Computing)

Computing
Word series - Quick way to arrange table rows
If you need to move one or more rows in a table...
1. Position the insertion point marker in the row you want to move (or highlight multiple rows if you are moving more than one).
2. Press Alt Shift and the up arrow to move the row(s) up a row, or press Alt Shift and the down arrow to move the row(s) down a row.
3. You can repeat the shortcut to continue relocating the row(s) one row at a time.
You can also use this technique to separate a row from its table.
For example, suppose you place the insertion point marker in the third row of a table.
1. Pressing Alt Shift and the up arrow once will make it the second row.
2. Pressing Alt Shift and the up arrow again will make it the first row.
3. And if you press Alt Shift and the up arrow a third time, Word will insert a paragraph mark above the table and place the row above the mark (unless the table is at the top of the document).
4. You can reverse the process to reunite the row with its original table--or simply delete the paragraph mark that separates them.

Outlook series - Turning off the Outlook Journal
Outlook provides the ability to automatically record log entries in the Outlook Journal of activity that occurs with in all applications of the Office suite. Most users do not ever use the journal.
By default the option to capture activity to the journal is turned on. If you do not use the journal, you want to turn off the feature for two reasons.
• First, it slows down the performance of all Office applications. This is especially noticeable when you open and close Outlook. Have you ever wondered why it takes so long to open and close? It can even cause delays when opening other Office documents or databases.
• Second, it creates excessive data.
Turning off
Within Outlook from the menu bar...
• Select the Tools
• Select Options
• Click on the Journal Options button on the Preferences property sheet.
• Clear all check boxes in the Also Record Files From list box.
• Click OK and automatically journal recording is turned off

DAT file version update – To check that your computer is up-to-date with the most current versions of virusscan software, locate the blue and white shield with a red “V” in it by your system clock on the bottom right side of your screen and click on it with the right mouse button. Then choose “About VirusScan Enterprise” in the pull-down box. There are two things to look for; one is the “Virus Definitions” which should be at 4746 and the other is the "Scan Engine” which should be at 4400. If either one is not displaying the above versions, click on the red “V” again with the right mouse button, then choose “Update Now” in the pull-down box. This will open a dialogue box displaying the status of the update process. Once complete, close the dialogue box and rerun the “About VirusScan Enterprise” option as described above. If the version is not at or greater than the one above, please contact the Helpdesk at 562.4357 for assistance.
