Former Professor of Year Announces Retirement After 24 Years
Story and photo by Marc Schoder

Dr. Dale Davis, professor of marketing at Eastern New Mexico University, has announced that he will retire on June 1 after 24 years at Eastern.

“It’s time; I will turn 78 in June,” said Dr. Davis. “My wife and I would like to travel more, and we believe that this is the time to do it while we are still able.”

Dr. Davis has trips planned to Ireland in June, Minneapolis in July, and Hawaii in September. “My wife and I try to go to Hawaii every year,” he said.

The retired Marine officer noted that, besides traveling, he has other commitments.

“I am currently committed to a textbook, as well as researching an article. Other writing projects are also a possibility,” he said.

Born and raised in the western part of New York, Dr. Davis dropped out of high school to enlist in the Merchant Marine at the age of 16. After being hurt, he returned home to finish high school. After high school, he enlised in the Marine Corps. He explained that during World War II there was something called the 'World War II G.I. Bill." If one stayed in the Corps for three years, their college education would be paid for. “It seemed like a good way to get my schooling funded," he said.

Instead of going to school right away, Dr. Davis ended up staying in the service longer, eventually becoming a Lieutenant Colonel.

The 2004 U.S. Professor of the Year for New Mexico by The Carnegie Foundation and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education noted that another big event coming up is the celebration of his 60th wedding anniversary in November.

“We will most likely fly our son, Carter, and our daughter, Beth, to a central location so that they can celebrate with us,” said Dr. Davis. The retired marine Lt. Col. and his wife intend on staying in Portales because of the area and the people.

“When I was in the Corps, we moved 19 times in 22 years,” said Dr. Davis. “Here (in Portales) we have good friends, and have built a brand new home. People here are very friendly.”

Dr. Davis said that he was grateful to Eastern for allowing him to be a part of the action for the last 24 years.

“Eastern has been very good to me,” said Dr. Davis. “It’s been a wonderful experience.”

The forum’s purpose was to strengthen the relationship between the local communities and ENMU, and assist community leaders and others interested in gaining a broader understanding of local economic development.

“The good news is that we had ENMU academic experts and practitioners—city representatives, county commissioners and economic development experts—come up with a common vision, interests and direction,” said Kim Huffman, executive director of the Roosevelt County Community Development Corporation.

“It’s the first step in getting everyone on the same page.”

ENMU students could also benefit from stronger community partnerships.

“Although this forum was not directed at our students, there were implications for students and faculty in regard to student internships and, perhaps, in developing a Center for Local Economic Development at ENMU,” said finance professor David Hemley.

During the forum, Dr. Hemley gave an overview of local economic development, including discussing key economic drivers, such as growth in personal income, wealth and value of housing.

Dr. John Groesbeck, dean of the College of Business, gave an overview of local strategic management analysis. Dr. Sue Stockly, assistant professor of economics, provided an overview of working with data.

The faculty members also facilitated a brainstorming discussion on developing a strategic plan, including a vision and mission statement, and a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) analysis, which included an inventory of current assets and liabilities.

Weese coached at Texas Tech from 1982-83 through 2004-05. He helped the Lady Raiders achieve a 555-173 (.762) record during his lengthy stay on the TTU campus. He also contributed to Texas Tech winning five regular season Southwest Conference championships (1990-92, 1992-93, 1993-94, 1994-95, 1995-96) and three Southwest Conference Tournament titles (1991-92, 1992-93, 1995). He helped the Lady Raiders win three regular season Big 12 titles (1997-98, 1998-99, 1999-00) and achieve two Big 12 Tournament championships (1997-98, 1998-99).

While coaching and recruiting at Texas Tech, Weese was involved with 18 teams selected for the NCAA Division I national Tournament, including 10 teams which reached the Sweet 16. The Lady Raiders reached the Elite Eight in 1992-93, 1994-95, 1999-00 and 2002-03. Texas Tech won the NCAA National Championship in 1992-93.

“We are very pleased to have hired a head coach for the Zia basketball team who brings so much experience at the collegiate level,” Maguire said. “Linden Weese coached for a tremendously successful women’s basketball program at Texas Tech for more than two decades. He coordinated recruiting for the Lady Raiders in this part of the country as well as nationwide. He impressed our players, coaches and staff with his professionalism and enthusiasm for the game.”

Additional accomplishments for the Lady Raiders while Weese was coaching at TTU included the graduation of 76 student-athletes, increased attendance from 876 per game in 1982-83 to 12,660 per game (ranked second in the nation) in 2004-05, and Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) berths in 1982-83 and 1984-85. The Texas Tech women ranked sixth nationally in wins during the 1990s.

“I’m just so excited to have the opportunity,” Weese said. “I’m really looking forward to seeing where we can take the program in the future. I just want to thank Mike (Maguire) and the administration for this opportunity.”

Weese began his coaching career at Floydada High school in Floydada, Texas, where he was the head coach for girls’ basketball and girls’ track in 1977-78. From 1978-79 through 1981-82, he was the head girls’ basketball coach at Stratford High School in Stratford, Texas. The following season, 1982-83, he began his long tenure at Texas Tech. Weese won 65% of his games as a head coach at the high school level.

He was a member of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and served on the Assistant Coaches Committee from 1984-1986. He participated on the WBCA Special Committee on Recruiting and Access in 2004. He was recognized in a national women’s basketball publication as one of the top three assistant coaches in the NCAA.

He graduated from Higgins High School in Higgins, Texas, in 1972. He received an Associate of Arts degree in Education form Frank Phillips Junior College in 1974 and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Northwestern Oklahoma State University in 1976. He has been involved in numerous local and regional basketball camps and clinics, and has been a guest speaker at athletic and civic events in the Lubbock area. He was the local Co-Chairman of the Children’s Miracle Network Telethon in 2002.

Weese and his wife, Gay, live in Lubbock, Texas. They are the parents of five grown children between the ages of 23 and 37.

“My wife and I like this area. We have a place in Ruidoso as well. Our family is here (High Plains Region) and I think it’s a good fit for me and my family,” Weese said.”

The Zias compete in NCAA Division II and the Lone Star Conference. ENMU has earned an all-time record of 425-397 (.517) in 32 seasons since the team first played in 1974-75. Eastern won the LSC regular season title in 1992-93 and qualified for the LSC Tournament 15 times between 1985-86 and 2003-04. ENMU was 11-17 in 2005-06, including 3-11 in the LSC South.

Eastern will have an experienced group of returning players, as the Zias lose just one senior this spring — First Team All-Conference post player Tiana Bryant (Roswell, NM/University of New Mexico). Three players injured this past season are eligible for medical hardship waivers.

“We’re going to evaluate the kids that are here (at ENMU), Weese said. “I’ve met with them and really enjoyed what I’ve seen out of them so far.

Weese added that he wanted to field a team capable of playing an up-tempo brand of basketball. “I hope we put out a product that will compete every minute from start to finish,” he said. “I really like to push the ball up the floor. I think kids like that style. I think it’s an exciting style of ball.

Questions and Answers with Kenny Prince
Interview and photo by Wendel Sloan
Communication Services

Q. What do you do at the University and how long have you been here?

A. I have worked as an accountant in Business Affairs for 3 ½ years. During that time, I was the grants and contracts accountant for two years and currently approve requisitions for the university, do the accounting for the ENMU Foundation, and KENW TV/FM, and prepare monthly financial statements for the Foundation and annual financial statements for KENW TV/FM.

Q. What did you do before coming to Eastern?

A. I worked as a controller for a metal building manufacturer and farm store in Clovis for seven years and was a CPA for Terry L. Cone, CPA, in Portales for 17 years doing tax returns and governmental audits. Yes, I was one of those confounded auditors that come around once a year to cause inconvenience, grief and despair to those working in the government sector.

kenny prince

Q. How do you feel about your current job, and what are your future plans?

A. I like my job here at Eastern! It presents unique opportunities and challenges. Having worked in the private sector for 24 years, this has been a pleasant change. Speaking of change, in the short time I have been here, my job has changed or expanded four times and I have changed offices three times. All in all, it has been a great place to work. I hope to work here until I retire or I win the lottery. Whichever comes first.

Q. What extracurricular activities/organizations/hobbies/jobs are you involved in?

A. I belong to various professional organizations. I am a member of the First United Methodist Church, Portales Masonic Lodge and treasurer for the Wesley Foundation here on campus. Most of my extracurricular activities consist of attending the things in which my kids are involved. I do like to play golf and the piano.

Q. What do you like about Eastern, and what would you like to see changed?

A. Eastern is a very important and driving force in the community. I like being associated with such a class act. The only thing that I would change is the communication between departments.

Q. Where are you from and what was your life like growing up?

A. I have lived Portales all of my life. My parents owned a successful welding supply business and they taught me the value of strong work ethics and morals. I was in band and played golf on the Portales High School golf team. Not a very exciting life, but I survived.

Q. Tell us about your own family?

A. I am married to my best friend and confidant, Katrina. She is a special education teacher at Valencia Elementary School here in Portales. I have a son, Spencer, 14 and a daughter, Kelsey, 11. They are both active in band. Kelsey attends dance classes three nights a week at Jeffie Hamar’s The Dance Academy. Spencer and I attend Mr. Blakeley’s Eastern New Mexico Tae Kwon Do two nights a week.

One of the unique things about our family is that my son was born on his mother’s birthday and my daughter was born on my birthday. No, we didn’t plan it that way, it just happened.

Q. What kind of music do you like and what are some of your favorite songs?

A. I like all types of music with the exception of some types of opera. Sometimes I even like rap! I prefer to listen to ‘70s and country music. My favorite musical piece is Canon in D Major by Johann Pachelbel.

Q. What are your favorite foods?

A. Mexican food, pork chops, chocolate cream pie and Mississippi mud. Not at the same time, mind you.

Q. What are your favorite sports?

A. I like to play golf, but I don’t get the opportunity to play as much as I want to. I play in more tournaments than for leisure, although I am by no means a scratch player. I like the challenge of competition.

Q. What would be your perfect vacation spot?

A. I think somewhere near the ocean or mountains. We went on vacation to Whidbey Island, Washington and had a great time whale watching and enjoying the northwest part of the United States.

Q. What are some of your general philosophies or attitudes about life, religion, wars, etc.?

A. I think Robert Fulgham said it best in “All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten.”

Q. What is one thing you'd really like to do before you die?

A. Two things actually, make a hole in one and break 70.

New Decal Sought for Football Helmets – Coach Ribaudo would like a new decal for the Greyhound football helmets. He wants to open it up to students, faculty, staff, etc., to design and submit new ideas for the decal. The contest deadline is May 12. The only requirement for the decal is it must be able to go onto a silver football helmet. Green is the preferable color. The winner will be announced publicly at a football game during half-time and will be presented with a plaque. They will also be the honorary coach for that game. For more information, call Molly Hunter at 562.2971.

Human Rights Film Series Continues Tonight – "The Fourth World War" will continue the Human Rights Film Series tonight, Monday, April 17, at 7:30 p.m. in the Sandia Room of the CUB. The film will be followed by discussion. It is free and open to all.

“The Fourth World War” is a film about people taking the social struggle for democracy into the streets. From the front-lines of conflicts in Mexico, Argentina, South Africa, Palestine, Korea, 'the North' from Seattle to Genoa, and the 'War on Terror' in New York, Afghanistan, and Iraq. It is the story of men and women around the world who resist being annihilated in this global war.

While our airwaves are crowded with talk of a new world war, narrated by generals and filmed from the noses of bombs, the human story of this global conflict remains untold. "The Fourth World War" brings together the images and voices of the war on the ground. It is a story of a war without end, of those who resist, of those who struggle to overcome the conditions and institutions that are committed to violence, oppression, profits and aggression.

The product of over two years of filming on the inside of movements on five continents, "The Fourth World War" is a film that would have been unimaginable at any other moment in history. Directed by the makers of "This Is What Democracy Looks Like" and "Zapatista," produced through a global network of independent media and activist groups, it is a truly global film from our global movement and a window into the burgeoning struggle in the US over immigrant rights. According to Doug Moris, it is essential and inspiring viewing.

Free 9-Volt Batteries – KENW-TV is giving away 9-volt batteries with varying amounts of life left. These batteries are used in their microphones and have to be changed out before their life is up to prevent them from failing during a show. If departments have non-critical applications, they could get a lot of use in some applications from these used batteries. To obtain free batteries, call KENW at ext. 2112.

Eastern Student Picked for Internship in Washington, D.C.
Story and photo by Marc Schoder

jessica onsurez

Jessica Onsurez, a 21-year-old junior at Eastern New Mexico University, has been selected for a six-week internship with New Mexico Senator Pete Domenici.

“I have always had an interest in politics from a very young age,” said Ms. Onsurez. “My aunt was a former mayor of Loving, as well as other family members having involvement with politics.”

The internship is set to start in Sen. Domenici’s Washington D.C. office in late May until July.

“They have a total of 10 interns selected, nine of which, including myself, come from New Mexico schools,” said Ms. Onsurez. The communication major added that UNM and NMSU have four each coming from their respective institutions.

Ms. Onsurez said that she looks at the opportunity as a way to gain more knowledge of the inter-workings of the Federal Government.

According to Senator Domenici’s senate Website, the requirements for internships include completing at least one year of study in an institution of higher education. The site also adds that New Mexico residents and students receive priority in the selection process.

Ms. Onsurez added that one of the other requirements was to write an essay about current events. In her essay, “Secure Border Initiative,” the current Housing and Residence Life director of Eddy Hall stated her position on what she believed that the United States should do to solve border security issues.

She said that she believes that the current measures are in good faith, but little good will come of them. She added that building a wall and enforcing new initiatives will be expensive and add more strain to an already overworked border patrol.

“Diplomacy is the key,” said Ms. Onsurez. The 21-year-old junior gives credit for preparing for the internship to Eastern.

“I think three years at Eastern gave me as much preparation as a person needs to go into an internship like this,” she said.

Gravitational Wave Researcher to Give Public Lecture at ENMU
by Dr. William Andersen
Assistant Professor of Physics

Although gravity has been studied for more than four centuries, it remains on the frontiers of modern scientific research and discovery.

On Friday, 28 April, a worker in this field will visit ENMU and present a public lecture on one of these exciting ventures. Dr. Stephen Lau, currently a postdoctoral fellow at the University of New Mexico, will speak on the topic "Gravitational Waves and Numerical Relativity." The lecture will begin at 5:30 pm in Room 214 of the Science Building at ENMU. Refreshments will be served approximately one hour prior to the talk.

Dr. Lau is researching numerical methods for simulating gravitational waves. Such simulations are necessary for predicting signatures of gravitational waves emitted in various astrophysical events. Dr. Lau has collaborated with researchers worldwide in several areas of general relativity, including concepts of gravitational energy. Prior to his work at the University of New Mexico, he collaborated with Richard Price, a world renowned expert in general relativity at the Center for Gravitational Wave Astronomy at the University of Texas at Brownsville.

In ongoing work with Price, he is developing numerical methods for approximately calculating the gravitational wave signature expected from orbiting black holes.

The field of gravitational wave astronomy promises to be one of the more revolutionary ventures in science as experimentalists around the world vie to be the first to detect the ripples in space and time which constitute these waves. Although not yet directly detected, the existence of gravitational waves has been unambiguously verified by the observation of certain binary star systems whose orbits around each other are seen to lose energy in precise agreement with the predictions of general relativity.

The detection and use of gravitational waves would arguably be the biggest revolution in astronomy since Galileo first turned a telescope to the heavens. Gravitational wave telescopes under development in the United States have a good chance of being the first to detect gravitational waves. The most promising of these, a space borne detector under the auspices of NASA, unfortunately appears scheduled for indefinite postponement due to the redirection of funds towards landing a human on Mars. Even if other countries beat the United States in the race to detect these waves, gravitational wave astronomy will certainly play a key part in the astrophysical research in the United States in 21st century.

Members of the public interested in getting a first-hand account of the science of gravitational wave astronomy are cordially invited to Dr. Stephen Lau's public lecture. Admission is free.

Ginger's Safety Tip of the Month

Ladder Safety – Careless use and maintenance of ladders and scaffolds are a frequent cause of falls, injuries and, occasionally, deaths. The first important point to remember about ladders is to use them. A chair, table, box, or piece of equipment is not a safe substitute. Don't use a ladder for any other purpose, either. It is not meant to be a platform, scaffold, skid, brace, etc.

It is also important to use the right ladder for the job, one that's long enough and strong enough for your needs. Ladders are rated according to the amount of weight (human and equipment) they can safely hold. Set the ladder on a firm, level surface so the feet are parallel to the surface that the ladder rests against. Position the ladder at the proper angle. Make sure there is clear access at ladder top and bottom. Don't place a ladder in front of a door unless the door is blocked, locked, or guarded.

TechTips – Helpful Hints for using ENMU Technology (courtesy of ITS Computing)

Computing
Word series - Pick Up Where You Left Off
Nothing is more frustrating than being interrupted while you are in the middle of a major word processing project. Word can take you back to the text you were working on before you closed your document. When you reopen the document, press Shift + F5 before you do anything else. This shortcut executes the Go Back command, which moves the insertion point marker to your most recent editing location.

Outlook series - Copy Outlook Data
When you need to copy a table of data, such as names and phone numbers, create a new view that uses just the fields you need. Select the rows you need, then copy and paste into another document. If the document is OLE-aware, you will need to paste into Notepad first, then Select All and copy from Notepad, otherwise, the actual contacts are pasted as objects, not text.

DAT file version update – To check that your computer is up-to-date with the most current versions of virusscan software, locate the blue and white shield with a red “V” in it by your system clock on the bottom right side of your screen and click on it with the right mouse button. Then choose “About VirusScan Enterprise” in the pull-down box. There are two things to look for; one is the “Virus Definitions” which should be at 4741 and the other is the “Scan Engine” which should be at 4400. If either one is not displaying the above versions, click on the red “V” again with the right mouse button, then choose “Update Now” in the pull-down box. This will open a dialogue box displaying the status of the update process. Once complete, close the dialogue box and rerun the “About VirusScan Enterprise” option as described above. If the version is not at or greater than the one above, please contact the Helpdesk at 562.4357 for assistance.

If you have a tip you would like to share with us please send it to: ENMU.TechTips@enmu.edu

Applicants Sought for 2006 Legislative Internship Program

The New Mexico Legislative Council is seeking applicants for the 2006 Legislative Internship Program. The opportunity is for two applicants to work in the New Mexico Legislature, the interns will be assigned to the Legislative Council Service, the Legislative Education Study Committee or the Legislative Finance Committee.

The purpose of the Legislative Internship Program is to educate interested students about the state legislature and to provide practical experience in the performance of day-to-day staff work for New Mexico's citizen-legislature. Interns will provide staff support to interim legislative committees that study the criminal justice system, education, governmental ethics, election issues, tax policy and planning, Indian affairs, health care, welfare reform and scientific and technological developments. Work performed by interns may include research, issues analyses, speech writing and helping to organize interim legislative committee meetings.

Each intern will receive a stipend of $9,000, paid in bi-weekly installments, and will be reimbursed for expenses incurred while traveling with interim legislative committees. The internships will be full time and will last from July 1 through December 31, 2006. An intern's day will commence at 8 a.m. and end at 5 p.m. Interns will be responsible for making their own housing arrangements. The Legislative Council Service cautions applicants that housing in or near Santa Fe may be a problem. Attempts are made to assist interns with housing, but no convenient and affordable housing arrangements are certain.

All applicants must be full-time, degree-seeking undergraduate or graduate students at one of the six state universities. Students receiving degrees in May 2006 are eligible for the program.

Applicants for the internships must submit a cover letter, or an accompanying essay of no more than 500 words, explaining why the applicant is seeking the internship; a resume; and a transcript (an unofficial copy will suffice) of college courses. Failure to provide the requested documents will result in disqualification of an applicant.

Submit application materials to Professor Anthony B. Schroeder in the Department of Communicative Arts & Sciences on or before Friday, May 05, 2006. ENMU can nominate 2 primary applicants and one alternate.

Those selected for the Legislative Internship will be notified May 22, 2006.

The Legislative Council Service is an equal opportunity employer. No applicant for the Legislative Internship Program shall be discriminated against on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, sexual preference, age or handicap.

New Mexico First® is making a limited number of full and partial scholarships available for students to attend the upcoming town hall that will be held in Santa Fe April 20-22 on higher education and workforce development. The scholarships will cover the cost of registration, materials, meals and lodging, if required, at The Lodge at Santa Fe. Students can request an application by contacting Krista Koppinger via e-mail at kristak@nmfirst.org. Information on the Town Hall is available at: www.nmfirst.org.

The purpose of the town hall is to develop recommendations for policymakers based on statewide citizen input for strengthening our system of higher education to better prepare students for careers.

“The work product of the forum will provide guidance to the legislature, governor’s office, and higher education policymakers on how to increase enrollment in higher education and improve completion rates at colleges and universities to address the state’s needs for a higher skilled workforce and better paying, more rewarding jobs,” said Heather Balas, town hall director.

New Mexico First convenes statewide town halls annually on issues of broad interest. During the past 20 years, the nonpartisan, self-sustaining organization has convened more than 50 forums on issues ranging from taxes to water, education, economic development, health care, tribal relations, energy and federal spending.

New Mexico First was co-founded by Senator Pete Domenici and Jeff Bingaman, along with civic and business leaders, in 1986 to involve more citizens in the democratic process. More than 5,000 citizens have participated in the town halls since then.
