Todd Scalise
Tod's Scalise Art

The Runnels Gallery in the Golden Library at Eastern New Mexico University will host the art exhibition ‘Second-hand Chakra’ by Todd Scalise, ENMU assistant professor of art. The show runs from Dec. 11 through Jan. 15 during library hours (Monday-Thursday 7:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.; Friday 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Sunday Noon to 11 p.m.). A reception will be from 5-7 p.m. on Dec. 15 with a brief gallery walk-through by the artist at 6 p.m. The public is welcome.

This exhibition marks Scalise’s tenth anniversary of finishing his formal education. Scalise said, “My teacher, John Walker, once told me it would take a decade to get away from my education; the only way to move ahead was to paint my way ahead. So I have.”

This exhibition includes paintings and rugs that Scalise created during his first year at Eastern. The exhibition was made possible with the help of an ENMU Instructional Grant. With this grant assistance, the artist was able to attend the Rockmirth Artist-in-Residency program in Sapello, N.M., this past summer. The grant, in combination with an instructional opportunity, allowed Scalise to further his teaching and art-related experience.

Scalise's work can be found on line at www.toddscalise.com.

Ginger's Safety Tip of the Month

Please Don't Ignore Tape, Barricades and Orange Fencing

Caution tape, barricades, and orange fencing. What do these items have in common? They are safety devices to keep people from going into an area that is unsafe for pedestrian traffic. It is not merely a suggestion, it is a warning that if you enter this area you are at risk of injury. Human nature is to take the shortest route, and the caution tape is for people that don’t know how to watch out for obstacles and/or falling debris. Fencing was installed at the Campus Union building when they were taking down huge sheets of glass, and people were still going over the barricades. Caution tape, barricades, orange fencing, and other safety devices are used to keep people from going into a work area that is unsafe. Please do not go under or through these safety devices. They are there for your protection. The life you save may be your own.

Computing
Outlook series- To quickly move between Outlook windows or other programs
Use the ALT-TAB key combination. While holding the ALT and pressing tab, it will cycle you through each of the running programs. Release the keys when you find the one you want.

PowerPoint series – Playing Sounds Across Slides in PowerPoint
Sounds stop playing when you move to the next slide. If you want them to play across multiple slides or even for the entire presentation, try this:
1. Go to the slide where you want the sound to begin playing
2. Choose Insert, Movies and Sounds
3. Click Sound from Clip Organizer (or Sound from File) to insert the sound. If you don't want the sound icon to appear in the slide show, drag it just off the slide.
4. Click yes when asked if you want the sound to play automatically. If you are not asked this, don't worry, the next steps will let you set that (or double-check the settings if you were asked and said yes.)
5. Right-click the sound's icon and pick Custom Animation from the popup menu. The Custom Animation pane will open and your sound file should be listed.
6. Click the arrow directly to the right of the sound icon to pull down the various options
7. Select Effect Options, and on the Effects tab, click the radio button beside Stop Playing after XXX slides. Put 999 in the box so the track will play throughout all your slides, even if you go back and forth among slides. PowerPoint considers each transition a "slide," so you want to put a large number in there.
8. Check the settings in the Timing tab. To play automatically, the timing should be set to Start After Previous with a 0-second delay. Click OK to close the dialog box.

DAT file version update – To check that your computer is up-to-date with the most current versions of virusscan software, locate the blue and white shield with a red “V” in it by your system clock on the bottom right side of your screen and click on it with the right mouse button. Then choose “About VirusScan Enterprise” in the pull-down box. There are two things to look for; one is the “Virus Definitions” which should be at 4908 and the other is the “Scan Engine” which should be at 4400. If either one is not displaying the above versions, click on the red “V” again with the right mouse button, then choose “Update Now” in the pull-down box. This will open a dialogue box displaying the status of the update process. Once complete, close the dialogue box and rerun the “About VirusScan Enterprise” option as described above. If the version is not at or greater than the one above, please contact the Helpdesk at 562.4357 for assistance.

Telephony – To change the personal greeting:
• From Ready, press 4 6
• Record greeting
• Press # to accept and turn on greeting

My Name is Jesus C.
I am: 14 years old
I am in: 7th grade
My favorite things to do: Goosebumps books, watching movies, cooking and swimming
My favorite foods: Fast foods (especially Taco Bell), pizza, and pasta

Jesus, 14 is a very intelligent and easy going child. He is playful, outgoing and relates well with younger children and adults. He has this great gift to make you laugh (and who could resist those dimples?). He is in 7th grade special education and lists science as his favorite subject. Jesus is an excellent reader and loves to read “Goosebumps” type books. He likes to watch movies, cartoons and comedy shows and has the amazing ability to memorize them and recall scenes and dialogues at verbatim. Jesus cleans his own room, does his laundry and helps with chores around the house. He enjoys helping in the kitchen, cooking and trying out new dishes. Nevertheless, fast food (especially Taco Bell), pizza and pasta are his favorites. Jesus is working with horses as part of his therapy and has bonded with them from the start. He likes animals and would love to have a dog. He is described by his social worker as outgoing, friendly and has a great sense of humor. TC

Community Services Center Seeking Food

The Community Services Center is a 501(c3) private not-for-profit corporation which has been in existence since 1965. We serve as the sponsoring agency for many programs in our community. These programs include, but are not limited to the following: The Senior Meal Site; Adult Day Care; Foster Grandparent Program; Senior Companion Program; Home Care Programs; Retired Senior Volunteer Program; senior transportation; Food Pantry; Commodities; Assistance with gas, wood, or propane through the PNM Good Neighborhood Fund; rent/mortgage and food assistance through the FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency); and water utility assistance through The Salvation Army.

The Food Pantry located at the Center provides canned foods for approximately 30 needy families each month. These families can receive food from the CSC Food Pantry up to twice per year. We strive to keep the Food Pantry stocked at all times through community donations from the Post Office’s Annual “Stamp-Out Hunger Campaign,” and through donations from various service clubs and organizations.

During the holiday season the CSC Food Pantry is hit especially hard by needy families in our community. The Community Services Center would like to express its sincere appreciation to the Family & Consumer Sciences Family Resource Management Class for their efforts in helping us stock our Food Pantry for the Holidays by “Trick or Treating for Cans” on Halloween night. In addition, we have had several other students as well as faculty members that have contributed significantly to the Food Pantry, and we sincerely appreciate it. Several programs offered through the Community Services Center rely heavily on community donations, especially the Food Pantry and the Senior Meal Site. If you would like more information about the programs or services offered through the Community Services Center, located at 1100 Community Way in Portales, please call 356-8576.
