ENMU-Ruidoso Seeking KEDU Radio Station Dr. Mike Elrod, ENMU-Ruidoso provost, has announced that he has entered into preliminary negotiations with Fort Stanton Inc. to transfer KEDU’s FCC license to ENMU-Ruidoso and acquire the radio station assets. “We have agreed in principal to the conditions of acquiring the radio station.” Elrod stated that he is requesting financial assistance from area legislators to purchase the station assets. “I have requested $125,000 from state Capital Outlay funds to purchase the equipment. The funds, if approved during the 2006 legislative session, will also allow the college to professionally engineer and install the equipment. “I am excited about the professional career training possibilities for our students and think an all volunteer, student run educational radio station would be of tremendous benefit for the entire community.” According to the Federal Communications Commission, KEDU’s Low Power FM (LPFM) license is authorized for noncommercial educational broadcasting only and is limited to operating at 100 watts or less. The approximate service range of a 100 watt LPFM is a 3.5 mile radius. Elrod stressed that “the transfer of the license and acquisition of the radio station assets is far from being complete; however, should the opportunity become a reality, (upon approval of the legislature and the governor), the station could be up and running by late summer.” “In conversations with Tony Hoffman, President of Fort Stanton Inc., various community leaders, and KWES and MTD radio representatives, I have pledged to them we will provide high quality educational programming for the residents of Ruidoso and our neighbors in Mescalero.” “Our goals include offering students a high quality broadcast communications program, producing local educational programming, and providing public service announcements.” “Ongoing operational costs will be supported in part by college funds supplemented with donations from corporate and community sponsors.” “Elrod emphasized that we will operate much like any university student run radio station and not be in competition with local commercial radio stations.” “We will call upon community volunteers and the talents of ENMU-Ruidoso students to operate, produce and broadcast a wide array of educational and community service programs.” For more information, call Elrod at 505.257.2120.
