ENMU Bachelor's Film Degree is First Among State's Public Universities
by Wendel Sloan
Communication Services

Eastern New Mexico University will offer a bachelor's degree in film for the first time this fall. Called the Digital Cinema Arts (DCA) Degree, the new bachelor's degree is a cooperative effort between Eastern's Departments of Art, Music, Theatre and Dance, and Communicative Arts and Sciences.

greg erf
Greg Gets a Taste of Reality TV – KBIM StyleGreg Erf, professor of art, was interviewed by Mike Paluska of KBIM-TV out of Roswell about Eastern's new film degree which begins this fall. The piece aired twice on KIBIM-TV last Wednesday, July 5. The Albuquerque Journal, Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, Portales News-Tribune and other media have also reported on the new degree.

It is believed to be the first bachelor's film degree offered among New Mexico's public universities. ENMU-Roswell offers an associate degree in media arts and has developed film technician training classes. The new bachelor's degree at ENMU-Portales will expand the film technician training class to the Portales campus and accept up to 16 transfer hours into the DCA program.

According to Greg Erf, professor of art, "This new degree will place equal importance on academic studies, such as general education, theory, criticism and history, along with the creative production skills necessary for the creation of narrative, animated or experimental film. Our approach is to create the total filmmaker. Students will learn everything from screen and playwriting, to pre-production, production and post-production, as well as acting."

Each student is required to take 14 professional practice hours focused on producing a short film. Freshmen and sophomores will receive credit for working as set designers, actors, editors, animators and writers on the final short films directed by juniors and seniors. "We have created a cyclical filmmaking process for students. As students go through the program, they start out as crew members and finish as directors of their own films," said Erf.

Students choose at least two modules among eight as emphases. The modules include: "directing the story," "animation and media arts," "acting," "elements of theatrical design," "art and sound," "music/sound," "computer graphics, art and design," and "camera and production."

Erf says that after students graduate they will be qualified to direct, act, write, design sets, work in computer graphics, animation or special effects, sound and light, production, etc.

New Mexico governor Bill Richardson has initiated a new plan for economic development called Media Industries Strategic Project (MISP). The goal of MISP is to "create a viable, sustainable cluster of media industries."

Erf said that Eastern's new film major will fit perfectly into the MISP initiative. Plans are in the works for Eastern to build a 3,600-square-foot soundproof soundstage in its new communication building that will be capable of handling productions of professional film and television companies.

A screening room is envisioned at the renovated Yam Theatre in downtown Portales where film or television companies could watch the dailies of their project's progress when shooting productions in the region.

"We want to create a media infrastructure in New Mexico so that when our students graduate they can find jobs anywhere within the state," said Erf. "This will benefit all of New Mexico."

For more information, call Erf at 562.2652, or e-mail greg.erf@enmu.edu.

ENMU Offering Social Work Degree in Several Cities
by Wendel Sloan
Communication Services

With cooperation of New Mexico Highlands University’s BSW program, Eastern New Mexico University is taking over this fall in offering a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree at ENMU-Roswell. The degree will also be offered at ENMU-Portales and ENMU-Ruidoso, as well as at Eastern’s other instructional television sites at Cannon Air Force Base, Clovis Community College, New Mexico Junior College in Hobbs, and Mesalands Community College in Tucumcari.

allen stata

According to Dr. Allen Stata, director of the Social Work program at Eastern, all of the social work courses for the degree can be taken through instructional television combined with Web-based study. This hybrid (ITV +Web) course model means that students can earn their BSW degree without having to travel to the Portales campus.

Students who have already taken the required general education courses, either through Eastern or from other programs, should be able to obtain the BSW in two additional years. Students who have taken social work courses from a Council on Social Work Education-accredited BSW program may also be able transfer those courses into Eastern’s BSW program.

Eastern’s curriculum is designed to prepare students and practitioners for generalist social work practice and eventual licensure.

According to Dr. Stata, for the convenience of non-traditional students, the courses are offered in the late afternoons, evenings and Saturdays.

Dr. Stata says that some of the many fields using social workers include mental health, child and senior welfare, youth services, law enforcement, corrections, hospitals, the military, and many other social service providers.

For more information, call Dr. Stata at 562.2504, or e-mail allen.stata@enmu.edu.

ground zero construction
Construction is underway in the old location of Cafe Down Under for the new Ground Zero.

General contractor Nick Griego and Sons of Clovis is expected to have the renovation complete by the start of the fall semester, according to Ms. James. The bathrooms on the basement floor are also being renovated.

Ms. James noted that once work is complete, the current location of Ground Zero will be turned into meeting rooms.

She said that there will also be two other conveniences for students in the new location. “We are planning a convenience store, where students will be able to pick up basic necessities without having to go into town. There will also be a World of Wings.” World of Wings, a New Orleans-based company, produces buffalo-style wings at reasonable prices, according to Ms. James.

She said that other features of the renovated space will be a stage with built-in sound equipment, a bank of computers for student use, and a fireplace for winter use.

The hours of operation are still under discussion.

For more information, call Ms. James at 562.2632.

Current Location of Ground Zero is Open This Summer – The Ground Zero Coffee Shop downstairs in the Campus Union is open this summer. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. They offer all of their usual varieties of coffees, fountain drinks, and snacks as well as breakfast burritos, cinnamon rolls and donuts. Please drop by and help support their efforts to stay open during the summer.

Beginning of Tall Tale

Safety Officer Tells Little Ones About Big Ones That Didn't Get Away
interview by Wendel Sloan
ginger creighton's fish tales
In the following interview, Safety Officer Ginger Creighton talks about her recent fishing trip to Canada (above with fishing guide Roy Littledeer), and her general philosophies about "Zen and the Art of Fishing. (We believe that James "Photoshop" Chacon may have had something to do with the above shot. Notice how this big baby practically levitates in the air.)

Q. What do you do at the University and how long have you been here?

A. I have been the Safety Officer at ENMU for 15 years, I even have a pin to prove it! I inspect buildings on campus to make sure they meet fire codes (i.e. check for blocked doors, extension cords across the floor, heaters and candles, just to name a few violations.) So if you see me coming, please blow out your candles and hide your heaters!

I also investigate accidents on campus for faculty, staff, students and visitors to see if something needs to be fixed so the accident won’t happen again. (Being a klutz cannot be fixed.) I do OSHA training, like proper lifting techniques, slips, trips and falls, ladder safety, etc. And my least favorite job is picking up radioactive waste and chemical waste to ship off to disposal sites.

Q. What did you do before coming to Eastern?

A. I was the Assistant Safety Officer at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces. Same job, different location.

ginger creighton's fish tales

Q. How do you feel about your current job, and what are your future plans?

A. I love my job because I don’t have to stay behind a desk. I get out amongst the people at the University. When I come to work I never really know what I will be doing. There might be a fire, or an accident, or something to keep me from doing my building inspections – never a dull moment. I have no future plans; isn’t that sad? I can retire in two years, but don’t think I will.

Q. Tell us about your recent fishing trip to Canada?

A. Gary, my husband, and my father-in-law went fishing in Sioux Lookout in Ontario, Canada. We fished for five straight days. My husband caught the biggest Northern Pike and walleyed, my father-in-law caught the most fish, but I had the most fun!!! The trip lasted 10 days, and that is the longest we have been together in our 25- year-marriage – had he actually lived to tell about it!

Q. Were there any big ones that got away?

A. Actually, I did catch the biggest fish. I have the picture on my desk to prove it (thanks to James Chacon and his magical computer!!!) I took 266 pictures, so if any one wants to see them just come on by!

Q. What extracurricular activities/organizations/hobbies/jobs are you involved in?

A. I am trying to learn to build things out of wood, so carpentry. I love my flowers at home, so flower gardening. Now that I think about it, I really don’t know what I do with my time! Take pictures I guess! HA! As far as organizations, Bench Club, Friends of Eastern, PEO, what do I do with my time?

Q. What do you like about Eastern, and what would you like to see changed?

A. I can honestly say I love my job and the people I work with. There are a couple of whiners, but they can be tolerated.

Q. Where are you from and what was your life like growing up?

A. I am from Artesia, and, yes, I am sick of orange. I have one sister. I grew up in a fun-loving family. We did not have much money but we had a lot of fun. I was a swimmer, tennis player, cheerleader, and practical joker.

ginger creighton's fish tales

Q. Tell us about your own family?

A. I have two children. Curtis is 22 and lives in Las Cruces. He graduated from NMSU with a degree in business and marketing in December 2005 and runs the Horse 'N Hound Feed 'N Supply. My daughter, Oma, is 20 and lives in Portales. She is attending ENMU and majoring in business and marketing. She works for Woody’s Jewelry.

Q. What kind of music do you like and what are some of your favorite songs?

A. I like all kinds of music, even a little rap. My favorite song if “I Hope You Dance” by LeeAnn Womack, but I really like the sound track of Coyote Ugly, that is my favoritest movie also. Maybe I will come back in my second life as a bar dancer! HA!

Q. What are your favorite foods?

A. My favorite all time was a cherry-dipped ice cream cone from Dairy Queen, but they stopped making it. So I guess it would be brownies with nuts, enchiladas, hamburgers, French fries, shall I go on? HA! Maybe that is why I “chunky dunk instead of skinny dip”. HA!

Q. What are your favorite sports?

A. I use to love racquet ball until I blew my knee out. I ride my bike and scooter.

ginger creighton's fish tales

Q. Besides Canada, where would you like to vacation?

A. South Dakota to see the black hills gold, Yellowstone National Park, New Youk City, Niagra Falls, shall I go on? HA!

Q. What are some of your general philosophies or attitudes about life, religion, wars, etc.?

A. My general attitude about life is, “Being Happy does not mean everything is perfect; it means you have decided to see beyond the imperfections.” (I did not make that up. I stole it from somewhere).

People whine too much. Life is too short to be miserable and whine all the time.

Q. What is one thing you'd really like to do before you die?

A. I want to watch my children get married and play with my grandkids.

Q. Other thoughts?

A. I have said to much already!!!! BYE

New Sign to Spruce up Entrance to Campus
by Marc Schoder

The corner of South Avenue K and Highway 70 (West Second Street) at the entrance to Eastern New Mexico University is getting a facelift with the addition of a new “Eastern New Mexico University” sign.

The land, donated by Wells Fargo Bank in 2004, sat undeveloped until the end of the spring semester.

“The project is supposed to be completed by the end of July. There was a delay in obtaining the brick from the manufacturer and that slowed down the project,” said Lewis Reeves, director of the Physical Plant.

“All of the brick has arrived so work can resume. When the masons finish, the Physical, Plant, along with help from a local landscape company, will add some finishing touches," said Mr. Reeves.

According to Mr. Reeves, the glass artwork that will be a part of the project has not yet been commissioned.

Mr. Reeves added that the new sign will be a great addition to the campus.

“It will be an attractive entrance piece when visitors arrive on the campus, and will announce our university very positively.”

Former ENMU Media Services Director Enjoying Second Career in Real Estate
Story and photo by Marc Schoder
Communication Services

Wanda Graham, former director of Media Services at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, is enjoying a second career in real estate after her retirement from ENMU, in June of 2005.

wanda graham

"I have had my real estate license since 2001 and everything has been going very well for me," said Graham, now owner of Kiva Realty in Portales. "I am now fulfilling one of my lifelong dreams by owning my own business."

Ms. Graham added that a lot of prayer has helped her get to the point where she is now.

"I saw the building that I now have my office in and thought at first that I could just rent it out," she said.

Ms. Graham noted since she had her broker's license, she would go into business for herself.

"A lot of conversations with the Lord gave me confidence to take the next step."

She said with the Defense Department announcing a new mission for nearby Cannon Air Force Base, the Clovis/Portales microplex will be growing and the need for housing will be on the increase.

"The addition of the new ethanol plant will also be extremely positive for the entire area," she said.

The real estate agent added that making the transition from working a regular job to working for herself in real estate was easy.

"I was selling part time since I got my real estate license in 2001," said Ms. Graham

"I was told by many that it would take three to five years for my business to be successful. Now that I am into my seventh month, I do see what they mean, but I am confident that it will be worth the effort."

When reflecting on her 25 years at Eastern, Ms. Graham added that she was very thankful for the time she spent there.

"Because of Eastern, I am able to pursue my second career and enjoy what I am doing by helping people find their dream home," says Ms. Graham. "I can help people find the home that they will truly be happy with, without having to push to get the sale."

General Comments and Compliments

Dear ENMU,

Just wanted to send a well deserved Thank You to ENMU for being an event sponsor for the “2006 Kid Fest.” We have heard nothing but great things from the parents and children of Clovis and the surrounding areas who attended the event. Many of those parents also wanted us to thank the event sponsors on a job well done on their behalf.

The kids loved playing football with the “famous football players” and I know that those kids will cherish the time they spent with those football players from ENMU. We at the Clovis News-Journal and all the participants at Kid Fest know we could not have done it without you!

Thanks again for all your support,

Jenni Gee

ENMU Selling Houses to Make Room
for New Student Housing

by Ezra Paul Mann

With Eastern New Mexico University enrollment growing at an impressive rate, the need for more facilities is increasing. Not only is the campus constructing new academic buildings, they are also planning new accommodations for students.

To make room for a new student housing complex, eight Portales properties currently owned by the University will be auctioned, according to David Moon, supervisor of Inventory Control.

The older student housing on campus will be gradually weaned out. "This is necessary because some dorms are at least 40 years old,” Mr. Moon said. "Eastern also wants to get out of the rental business."

The auction will be at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 12, in the parking lot north of the Physical Plant and west of the Child Development Center. The eight properties include six houses and two garages. The houses are located at 1508 S. Ave I, 1516 S. Ave I, 1105 W. 15th, 1016 W. 16th, 1512 Ave I, and 1024 W. 17th, and the garages can be found next to 1508 S. Ave I and east of Chavez Hall.

Perhaps the best part of the deal is that there is no set price on the houses, so bidding won’t be simply limited to the deep-pocketed. It will be up to the individuals who buy the structures to move them in 30-60 days.

The new student housing is being made possible by a $14-million bond. The bond will be paid back over 30 years from with money received from rent.

According to Stephanie McClary, director of Housing, there will be 90 one-, two- and four-bedroom apartments, and will accommodate up to 270 students. Residents will be able to enjoy many amenities, including a swimming pool, study room, computer lab and access to a club fitness center.

The new housing is expected to be open to students as early as August of 2007. Rental Rates have not been finalized.

ENMU Helps Offer Classes at New Mexico Women’s Correctional Facility
by Kathleen O'Connor
Cibola County Beacon

GRANTS - Occasionally you meet someone who stands out in a crowd - as a leader, a humanitarian and someone who works for the good of all people and the community.

Bill Snodgrass has served as Grants Chief of Police, Mayor of Grants and most recently as warden for the New Mexico Women’s Correctional Facility. Now, he has decided to retire after 30-plus years in the criminal justice system.

The Grants resident first hired on at the Women’s Correctional Facility as chief of security 13-and-a-half years ago, then served seven years as warden.

During the 1980s, when he was chief of police, Snodgrass introduced a task force for domestic violence, helped research and draft the domestic violence statutes, and spearheaded a proactive arrest record.

Another of Snodgrass’s accomplishments, in his position as warden, was the creation of the Corrections Certification Academy. With the assistance of the Department of Corrections, he was able to start a program that allows individuals to complete their certification in Grants instead of traveling to Santa Fe. “This training is a 10-week course.” Said Snodgrass. “People who are single parents or have families to care for, had a difficult time getting to the training up in Santa Fe. Now they can remain here with their families.

“It has opened up opportunities for people that did not exist before,” added Snodgrass. “Steve Bell is the administrator of the academy, and it allows us greater recruitment ability.”

The warden was also able to add college classes for inmates at the women’s facility. “Through a federal grant, and the help of Eastern New Mexico University, we were able to get computers and online classes for the women inmates,” he said. “Now we have the ability to provide education and skills to the women so that they have a better chance to succeed. These programs give the women opportunities to change their lives for the better.”

ENMU Professor Publishes Book of Ghost Stories
by Ezra Paul Mann
Communication Services

ghosts scene

Some of the best stories come about when they are left to write themselves. This advice has been offered by Stephen King, one of the most successful horror writers of all time.

This is also what Dr. Antony Oldknow, professor of English at Eastern New Mexico University, believes. Of course, this is a belief that Dr. Oldknow acquired in more recent years. He hopes that this will make his first ghost story collection a success among fans of the bizarre. Welcome to “The Passion Play and Other Ghost Stories.”

About seven years ago, Dr. Oldknow began writing these stories, then submitting them successfully to literary magazines such as “All Hallows” (Canada) and “Supernatural Tales” (England). Each story acts as a different and unconnected tale which includes a mixture of conscious and unconscious thought caught in a tangled web of fear. Dr. Oldknow is extremely excited that the book has finally come out. “This is really big for me,” he said.

Dr. Oldknow wrote these 10 stories in a similar style to that of M. R. James, whose work has influenced a great many major authors, including H. P. Lovecraft, Ruth Rendell and Stephen King. Dr. Oldknow says he tries to stay clear of some traits exhibited by currently popular movies. “My work is in no way dominated by raw blood-and-guts horror,” he said. Dr. Oldknow prefers other ways of keeping readers on the edge of their seats while being pleasantly entertained.

Dr. Oldknow has enjoyed a great deal of success reading his stories to classes in the United States and, recently, repeated that success in a trip to his native town, Peterborough, England. He’s always pleased at the reaction of the audience and remembers how shocked some readers and listeners have been. “Some actually screamed,” he said.

ghost scene

Two of the stories that appear in the collection, “Quintinshill” and "Harrow," deal respectively with the two deadliest train crashes to have occurred in Oldknow's native Britain. Other of Dr. Oldknow's stories incorporate events he has himself experienced, some during his childhood.

“I had a Latin master, Mr. Vigor, who said that if we successfully finished a term's compulsory Latin assignments ahead of time, he would read us M. R. James ghost stories,” Dr. Oldknow said. The result was that many of the students, including Dr. Oldknow, became hooked on the stories; the teacher himself appears in one of Dr. Oldknow’s stories, though with a slight name change – a tribute from the author for having been his initial inspiration.

Dr. Oldknow recommends his stories to readers who enjoy getting a thrill from reading subtle horror.

His book, published in Canada at the end of May by British Columbia's Ash Tree Press (which is associated with The Ghost Story Society), can be purchased through online retailers such as The Ash Tree Press at http://www.ash-tree.bc.ca/atp120the%20passion%20play.htm or Shocklines at http://shocklines.stores.yahoo.net/paplandotghs.html. The book cost around $46 for first-print copies.

Ginger's Safety Tip of the Month

Bug Safety

Don't use scented soaps, perfumes or hair sprays.

Avoid areas where insects nest or congregate, such as stagnant pools of water, uncovered foods and gardens where flowers are in bloom.

To remove a visible stinger from skin, gently scrape it off horizontally with a credit card or your fingernail.
Insect repellents containing DEET are the most effective.

The concentration of DEET varies significantly from product to product, so read the label of any product you purchase. Remember DEET should not be used on children under two months of age.
