What Will be in Next Week's Issue is Anybody's Guess Announcements Jack Williamson Receives Another Major Award – Jack Williamson and Greg Bear, two legendary authors of speculative fiction and long-time members of Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America, have been named recipients of the 2006 Robert A. A university setting is no different. One such department at Eastern is
Distance Education and Outreach, formerly known as Extended Learning.
They recently made the name change to update and better inform about their
overall purpose. Roswell-Area Students Invited to Meet with ENMU Transfer Advisors Chaves County residents who have received associate degrees or ENMU-Roswell students who will be receiving associate degrees are invited to take advantage of a special opportunity to continue their education. Instructors and advisors from Eastern New Mexico University in Portales will be on the Roswell campus, Tuesday, July 18, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Instructional Technology Center lobby. Students can get information about pursuing a wide variety of bachelor’s degrees available by transferring to ENMU in Portales. Many of these degrees can be earned on the Roswell campus, without commuting to Portales. Courses are offered online, through instructional television, and by on-site professors. Technical or vocational degrees can also transfer into a Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences (BAAS) or a Bachelor of Occupational Education (BOE). More than 60 upper division and graduate level courses are offered each semester on the Roswell campus. “A priority for higher education institutions in New Mexico is to make the transfer process as simple as possible,” said Dusty Heritage, associate dean of Career and Technical Education at ENMU-Roswell. “ENMU and ENMU-Roswell have gone a step further by offering several baccalaureate programs to students pursuing careers in technical fields where the associate degree used to be a terminal degree. For instance, in the past a welder with an associate degree and industry credentials was at the end of his/her educational career. Now, these professionals are able to pursue the BAAS or BOE, which is very important if they want to teach or move into managerial positions in their trade,” she said. For more information about the ENMU Advising event, contact Dina Jenks at 624.7344. Employee/Alumni Briefs Dr. Phillip Shelley, professor of anthropology and dean of the Graduate School, has recently been reappointed to the New Mexico Cultural Properties Review Committee by Governor Bill Richardson. Dr. Mark Dal Porto, associate professor of music, had his recently completed orchestral work titled “Song of Eternity” performed by the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra on July 13th at the National Radio Studios in Prague under the direction of Robert Ian Winstin. EasyStreet Online Services, Inc., of Portland, Ore., recently named ENMU grad Karen Karger as Marketing Communications Manager. Ms. Karger has an extensive background in marketing high-tech companies, including Compli, Tektronix and Texas Instruments. She earned a B.S. in secondary art education from Eastern. State's Public Universities Eastern New Mexico University will offer a bachelor's degree in film for the first time this fall. Called the Digital Cinema Arts (DCA) Degree, the new bachelor's degree is a cooperative effort between Eastern's Departments of Art, Music, Theatre and Dance, and Communicative Arts and Sciences. It is believed to be the first bachelor's film degree offered among New Mexico's public universities. ENMU-Roswell offers an associate degree in media arts and has developed film technician training classes. The new bachelor's degree at ENMU-Portales will expand the film technician training class to the Portales campus and accept up to 16 transfer hours into the DCA program. According to Greg Erf, professor of art, "This new degree will place equal importance on academic studies, such as general education, theory, criticism and history, along with the creative production skills necessary for the creation of narrative, animated or experimental film. Our approach is to create the total filmmaker. Students will learn everything from screen and playwriting, to pre-production, production and post-production, as well as acting." Each student is required to take 14 professional practice hours focused on producing a short film. Freshmen and sophomores will receive credit for working as set designers, actors, editors, animators and writers on the final short films directed by juniors and seniors. "We have created a cyclical filmmaking process for students. As students go through the program, they start out as crew members and finish as directors of their own films," said Erf. Students choose at least two modules among eight as emphases. The modules include: "directing the story," "animation and media arts," "acting," "elements of theatrical design," "art and sound," "music/sound," "computer graphics, art and design," and "camera and production." Erf says that after students graduate they will be qualified to direct, act, write, design sets, work in computer graphics, animation or special effects, sound and light, production, etc. New Mexico governor Bill Richardson has initiated a new plan for economic development called Media Industries Strategic Project (MISP). The goal of MISP is to "create a viable, sustainable cluster of media industries." Erf said that Eastern's new film major will fit perfectly into the MISP initiative. Plans are in the works for Eastern to build a 3,600-square-foot soundproof soundstage in its new communication building that will be capable of handling productions of professional film and television companies. A screening room is envisioned at the renovated Yam Theatre in downtown Portales where film or television companies could watch the dailies of their project's progress when shooting productions in the region. "We want to create a media infrastructure in New Mexico so that when our students graduate they can find jobs anywhere within the state," said Erf. "This will benefit all of New Mexico." For more information, call Erf at 562.2652, or e-mail greg.erf@enmu.edu. Please Submit Slogan for 'Hardhat Hound' The Hardhat Committee is looking for a short slogan for Hardhat Hound. The slogan should be something positive about how Hardhat Hound is improving the campus through construction projects. An example would be "Building Our Future." The person submitting the winning entry will receive recognition in the Monday Memo. Please submit your slogan to: hardhat.committee@enmu.edu. (If you have trouble with that e-mail address, send to monday.memo@enmu.edu.) Tentative Timeline for Campus Construction Projects - August 15, meeting area complete in The Alley ENMU Offering Social Work Degree in Several
Cities With cooperation of New Mexico Highlands University’s BSW program, Eastern New Mexico University is taking over this fall in offering a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree at ENMU-Roswell. The degree will also be offered at ENMU-Portales and ENMU-Ruidoso, as well as at Eastern’s other instructional television sites at Cannon Air Force Base, Clovis Community College, New Mexico Junior College in Hobbs, and Mesalands Community College in Tucumcari. According to Dr. Allen Stata, director of the Social Work program at Eastern, all of the social work courses for the degree can be taken through instructional television combined with Web-based study. This hybrid (ITV +Web) course model means that students can earn their BSW degree without having to travel to the Portales campus. Students who have already taken the required general education courses, either through Eastern or from other programs, should be able to obtain the BSW in two additional years. Students who have taken social work courses from a Council on Social Work Education-accredited BSW program may also be able transfer those courses into Eastern’s BSW program. Eastern’s curriculum is designed to prepare students and practitioners for generalist social work practice and eventual licensure. According to Dr. Stata, for the convenience of non-traditional students, the courses are offered in the late afternoons, evenings and Saturdays. Dr. Stata says that some of the many fields using social workers include mental health, child and senior welfare, youth services, law enforcement, corrections, hospitals, the military, and many other social service providers. For more information, call Dr. Stata at 562.2504, or e-mail allen.stata@enmu.edu. Tutoring Positions Available for Undergraduate Students – [details] ENMU Houses Being Auctioned To make room for a new student housing complex, eight Portales properties
currently owned by the University will be auctioned, according to David
Moon, supervisor of Inventory Control. The auction will be at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 12, in the parking lot north of the Physical Plant and west of the Child Development Center. The eight properties include six houses and two garages. The houses are located at 1508 S. Ave I, 1516 S. Ave I, 1105 W. 15th, 1016 W. 16th, 1512 Ave I, and 1024 W. 17th, and the garages can be found next to 1508 S. Ave I and east of Chavez Hall. Perhaps the best part of the deal is that there is no set price on the houses, so bidding won’t be simply limited to the deep-pocketed. It will be up to the individuals who buy the structures to move them in 30-60 days. The new student housing is being made possible by a $14-million bond.
The bond will be paid back over 30 years from with money received from
rent. Travel Voucher Available on Intranet – The Travel Voucher is now available on the intranet as a PDF form. ENMU-Roswell News Avon Wilson Passes Away – [click here for photo] Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell sadly announces the death of Avon Wilson, Emeritus Director of the Adult Basic Education Program. Wilson passed away at her Roswell home on July 10 following a long and courageous battle with cancer. From 2000-2006, she also served as a State Representative for District 59. Wilson was recently recognized by the Leadership Roswell Alumni Association with a Lifetime Achievement award. “Those of us who were privileged to know and to work with Avon realize how truly deserving that recognition was, for she has made life better for thousands of people in our community and our state,” said Dr. Judy Armstrong, ENMU-Roswell Provost. “We will miss her greatly. Please join me in holding Bill, Avon's sister Roma, and the rest of her family and countless friends in your thoughts and prayers.” Wilson retired as the Director of Adult Basic Education (ABE) at ENMU-Roswell on September 30, 2005. In recognition of her retirement and 19 years of service to the Roswell campus, the ENMU Board of Regents granted Wilson Emeritus Director status. Wilson began working at ENMU-Roswell as an ABE Program Coordinator/Reading and Citizenship instructor in 1986. She was promoted to ABE Program Coordinator in 1987 and was named ABE Director in 1989. The Adult Basic Education program provides free materials and instruction in citizenship, English-as-a-Second Language (ESL), and basic reading, writing, and math skills. Born in Wichita Falls, Texas, Wilson earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish and Education from North Texas State College, and a Master of Education Administration from Eastern New Mexico University. Prior to her employment at ENMU-Roswell, Wilson worked as a public school teacher for 31 years. When she began working in the ABE program, fewer than 300 students were enrolled in all of the combined areas. Under Wilson’s competent, visionary, and caring leadership, the ABE program today serves more than 2500 students. Wilson said she enjoyed sharing in the success of GED graduates at many ABE graduation ceremonies. Wilson’s excellence in the field of Adult Basic Education also earned her honor and distinction in the state of New Mexico and nationally. During her seventeen years as ABE Director at ENMU-Roswell, Wilson received virtually every award given on the Roswell campus, including the NISOD Award for Teaching Excellence and the Spirit of Eastern Award. The ABE Program has also been named the state’s Program of the Year several times, has received multiple year ratings of “Outstanding,” and been used as an exemplary program model for others. At the New Mexico State ABE convention in 2001, Wilson was awarded the coveted Phil Felix Award of Merit and The Mountain Plains Adult Education Association Award of Excellence for her contributions to adult education. A highly acclaimed and much sought-after speaker, Wilson, in 2001, was asked to submit a copy of a presentation she had made to the ERIC Collection (Educational Resources Information Center), a prestigious, national database. Wilson’s numerous community awards included the following: Nancy Lopez Elementary School Reading Program Certificate of Appreciation, 1999-2000; Close-Up Foundation Government Studies Program Attendee, Washington D.C., 1997; Even Start Family Literacy Program Certificate of Appreciation, 2002; City of Roswell Certificate of Appreciation, All America City Winner, 2002; Certificate of Appreciation for presenting at the TEEN Supreme Keystone Conference, Boys and Girls Clubs of New Mexico in Alamogordo, 2003; Character Counts Award for Commitment to Education and Devotion to Character Counts, 2004; City of Roswell Outstanding Citizen Award, 2005; and American Character Counts Awards Banquet Honoree, Adult Character Builder, 2005. Wilson was a member of several professional organizations, including the New Mexico Adult Education Association and the New Mexico Coalition for Literacy. She was also active in the community and served on the Board of Directors of the Friends of the Roswell Public Library and on the City of Roswell Library Foundation Board. She was a member of the Altrusa Club of Roswell and served as President and Vice President of Altrusa, in addition to a term as Literacy Committee Chair and two terms as District Ten Literacy Committee Chair.
