ENMU Receives $5.175 Million in Funding from Legislature and Governor

Eastern New Mexico University has received approximately $5.175 million in new funding from the 2006 New Mexico Legislative Session.

Included in this total is $3.575 million for capital outlay. In House Bill 622, Governor Bill Richardson approved $1.5 million for the renovation of Eastern’s Science Building. This will be added to the $7 million that ENMU received for the Science Building in the 2004 General Obligation Bond. The Governor also approved $400,000 for fiber optic construction on campus.

Eastern also received $1.675 million in other capital outlay projects. The largest of these is $1.1 million for digital equipment for KENW-TV. Other items include $225,000 for a language lab, $100,000 for multimedia classrooms, $75,000 for a KENW-TV mobile unit, and a total of $150,000 for an agricultural lab, athletic training equipment, communication building equipment, and wellness center equipment.

In the Junior Bill (Senate Bill 415), Eastern will receive recurring funds of $77,000 for the Student Success Program and $25,000 for science enhancement.

“We are very pleased with the support we received from Governor Richardson,” said Dr. Steven Gamble, ENMU president. “He has visited Eastern several times, and we believe his support is recognition of the vital role that Eastern plays in New Mexico’s higher education system.

“We are also very grateful to Senator Stuart Ingle. His leadership was critical in our funding, including the $1.1 million we received for the digital conversion of KENW-TV. Senator Ingle has long been one of Eastern’s strongest advocates. Representative Keith Gardner also helped secure funding for Eastern, as did virtually all of the senators and representatives on the eastern side of the state.”

Eastern will also receive an additional $1.5 million in recurring funding to its base formula based on enrollment growth.

If voters approve the November 2006 General Obligation Bond, Eastern will also receive an additional $4.5 million for renovation to its Music Building.

“All in all, Eastern fared well in the Legislative Session,” said Dr. Gamble. “We are in good shape. We really appreciate the support we received from the Governor and the entire Legislature.”

Judy Pekelsma, adjunct art instructor and student advisor at ENMU Ruidoso Branch Community College, has been invited to attend a prestigious event at Harris Manchester College within the University of Oxford system on March 19-24. The Round Table on Women’s Rights will focus on the “identification of factors that create and perpetuate gender inequalities in both public and private sectors.”

The Oxford Round Table is an “invitation only” conference, involving a select group of governmental officials, professors and scholars from around the world. The Round Table was founded in 1989 as an interdisciplinary forum for scholarly consideration of important public policy issues. Participants are invited because of their particular academic expertise and their potential to make significant contributions to the discussions. Round Table membership is limited to approximately 40 persons in order to facilitate productive dialogue both during formal sessions and at other Round Table events.

Ms Pekelsma has been asked to present a paper to a panel of peer academicians to be centered on cultural, social, economic and legal conditions that foster gender discrimination. As a longtime artist and art instructor, she has chosen to research and write about “Women and Art.”

Provost Michael Elrod expressed his pleasure that Ms. Pekelsma has been chosen to represent not only the ENMU-Ruidoso campus but the entire ENMU system. “I know Judy will be a fine delegate and will provide a perspective that will be most valuable to everyone involved.”

Ginger's Safety Tip of the Month

Preventing Stress – To reduce stress and prevent fatigue, it is important to take mini-breaks (not many breaks) throughout the day. If possible, change tasks at least once every two hours. Stretch your arms, neck and legs often if you do the same type of work for long periods of time. Rest your eyes often by closing them or looking at something other than the work at hand. For a quick pick-me-up, breathe deeply several times by inhaling through your nose and exhaling through your mouth. In addition, always try to drink a lot of water throughout the day.

Computing
Word series - Changing the Bullet Type
Word allows you to easily create bulleted lists in your documents. As a default, Word uses a small dot as the bullet. You can change the bullet to any character you desire. You can change the bullets by following these steps:
1. Choose the Bullets and Numbering option from the Format menu. Word displays the Bullets and Numbering dialog box.
2. Make sure the Bulleted tab is selected.
3. Select a bullet style from those shown in the dialog box.
4. If you do not like any of the styles shown, select one of the styles and click on Customize. Word displays the Customize Bulled List dialog box
5. Select one of the six bullet characters available in the dialog box. If you use one of these, you can skip to step 10.
6. If you do not like any of the bullet characters shown, click on the Bullet button. (In Word 2002 and Word 2003, click on the Character button.) Word displays the Symbol dialog box.
7. Select a symbol to use as a bullet from among those shown.
8. You can select a different set of symbols by selecting a different typeface in the Font drop-down list.
9. When you have selected a symbol, click on OK. Word displays the Customize Bulleted List dialog box again.
10. Click on OK to close the dialog box.

PowerPoint series - Save Your Fonts with Your Presentation
If you are preparing a presentation that you plan to distribute to others, be sure that you check this option by clicking on the Tools button in the File/Save As dialog box. This will work for most TrueType fonts on the Windows platform.

DAT file version update – To check that your computer is up-to-date with the most current versions of virusscan software, locate the blue and white shield with a red “V” in it by your system clock on the bottom right side of your screen and click on it with the right mouse button. Then choose “About VirusScan Enterprise” in the pull-down box. There are two things to look for; one is the “Virus Definitions” which should be at 4715 and the other is the “Scan Engine” which should be at 4400. If either one is not displaying the above versions, click on the red “V” again with the right mouse button, then choose “Update Now” in the pull-down box. This will open a dialogue box displaying the status of the update process. Once complete, close the dialogue box and rerun the “About VirusScan Enterprise” option as described above. If the version is not at or greater than the one above, please contact the Helpdesk at 562.4357 for assistance.
