Listen [here] Letter-to-the-Editor from President Gamble About Bond B (Editor's Note: This letter-to-the-editor from President Gamble was recently published in yesterday's Portales News-Tribune.) Dear Editor: Bond B passed statewide with about 55 percent approval, and 62.6 percent approval in Roosevelt County-the fourth-highest approval in the state. We are very grateful to Roosevelt County voters for approving Bond B. We have a wonderful music department. Now our faculty will be able to train students in a facility that more closely matches the amazing job they do. And the public will be able to enjoy the fruits of this labor in professional caliber performances by our students and faculty. In addition to voters, we also thank all the volunteers, too numerous to single out, who worked tirelessly in promoting Bond B. This support will soon translate into a tangible structure that will pay intangible benefits to Roosevelt County and New Mexico for years to come. Once again to the citizens of Roosevelt County, thank you. Steven Gamble Thanksgiving Break Begins Thursday – The Thanksgiving Break for Eastern begins Thursday morning. Next Monday Memo on Tuesday, November 28 – Due to the Thanksgiving break, the next Monday Memo will appear on Tuesday, Nov. 28. The deadline to submit items will be at noon on Monday, Nov. 27. Freshman Seminar Students Throwing Pizza Party
for Elementary Students One group of freshmen at Eastern New Mexico University has gotten into the spirit of giving. Dr. Donald (Doc) Elder III’s University 101 class is conducting a canned food drive through today, Nov. 20, in conjunction with Valencia Elementary School in Portales. Initially, Dr. Suzanne Balch-Lindsey and Dr. Cheryl Pachak-Brooks, who run the freshman seminar program, had the idea that classes should perform a community service project. Dr. Elder’s class had a competition to choose the best service project and the winning idea was a canned food drive with Valencia. “For the class at Valencia that collects the most food, my freshman seminar class will throw them a pizza party. My 22 students will bring them pizza, fruit drinks and we’ll have a party together,” Dr. Elder said. Students at Valencia collect the cans, then the students from Dr. Elder’s class pick them up and deliver them to the Roosevelt County Food Bank. “Todd Morris, the principal at Valencia, stresses that helping others is a great thing, and he loved the idea of working with my class,” said Dr. Elder. So far, the project has been a success; as of Nov. 10, one class at Valencia had already collected over 200 cans. “One girl took the money that she had saved and went out and bought food. She was so touched by the idea of people going without that she bought $50 worth of canned food,” Dr. Elder said. Only two students in Dr. Elder’s class are from Portales; the rest are from other areas. Dr. Elder finds it refreshing that students who come to ENMU care so much about the community. “These kids understand what it means to give to the community and
relate well to people from different parts of the country. Projects like
this get kids to see the world differently and make a difference; I definitely
have hope for the future,” said Dr. Elder. Top Ten Scholar Reception Set for This Afternoon – Attached is the list of students who have been invited to attend the Top Ten Scholars reception at 3 p.m. today, Nov. 20, in the Sandia Room of the CUB. This event emphasizes and highlights students' academic achievement. Everyone is welcome. Remember, you can't affect change if you don't participate in the evaluation process. Annual Student Health Fair is This Evening – The annual ENMU Student Health Fair will be held in the CUB Ballroom Monday, Nov. 20, from 5-7:30 p.m. Snacks, mock-tails, and interactive games and activities will be provided. Message from Hardhat Hound – Construction has started on the campus District Energy modifications and it will be necessary to shut down the campus cooling loop to accomplish this work. There may be occasions when your room temperature is above normal but please be patient while these improvements are being made. The latest dates for changes to the loop system are as follows. Work will begin Monday, Nov. 20, behind the University Theater Center, the southeast corner of JWLA, and the north side of the Education Building. Please contact Physical Plant at 2511 if you need special accommodations while this work is in progress. Green and Silver View a Success – The University had approximately 300 students and parents at the inaugural ENMU Preview Day. This is an extraordinary start to what will become an annual event. For those that were not involved, Preview Day is a Saturday on which we invite high school students (juniors and seniors) to campus to learn about Eastern's programs and services. It is important to the University that we present a positive appearance anytime we have visitors on campus, and Preview Day brings perhaps the largest number of prospective students to campus of any of our events. I am convinced that virtually all of last Saturday's attendees left Eastern feeling positive about the University. An event like Preview Day takes a lot of hard work, planning and coordination. Each of the deans and the faculty of the colleges did a great job in presenting ENMU's academic programs, and the academic support areas and student organizations were exceptional. I want to especially thank the Enrollment Services folks and President's Ambassadors for their planning and execution of the event. I thank all who made the Green and Silver Preview Day a success. Your good work is appreciated.
