“I teach communication-centered writing across curriculum-based courses; I am interested in how one can create a program that helps students’ writing in all disciplines,” Dr. Dvorske said. Another part of the job Dr. Dvorske finds appealing is instructing graduate assistants how to teach. One of his philosophies is that teachers should know the reason why they are doing something. “There is a reason for everything; in teaching, you should have a reason for everything. You have to be aware of why you are doing something; if you don’t know why then you cannot be sure of the purpose or outcome,” said the Kansas native. As director, Dr. Dvorske and others are trying to make the writing program more linear. “We’re looking at making a clearer progression from 100-104, so it seems like a more coherent sequence to students. It will reinforce the essential skills and enable them to build from basic experiences in the process towards higher levels of thinking and research,” Dr. Dvorske said. While he has enjoyed the students and the job very much, Dr. Dvorske says that the one thing that bothers him is the different aromas in the area. “This is the most odoriferous area of the country; feed, cattle, oil, silos and ethanol are a buffet of stinking odors making this the smelliest place on earth, or at least where I have ever lived,” Dr. Dvorske said. His favorite type of writing is poetry because it is the most natural, according to Dr. Dvorske. “Good poetry should get you out of yourself and return you to yourself fully restored,” said Dr. Dvorske, who is expecting a baby with his wife, Tiffany. They will know the baby’s gender in a few weeks. Eastern was also a good fit for Dr. Dvorske and his family because of its mascot. He and his wife love greyhounds. “We adopt elderly greyhounds; we’ve had five greyhounds that have passed, and have our sixth now. If anyone has greyhounds, especially older ones they can’t take care of anymore, they should let us know,” Dr. Dvorske said. Employee Briefs Dr. Amy C. Hazelrigg, assistant professor of Curriculum and Instruction, presented a paper in late September at the Arizona-TESOL conference in Chinle Ariz., on the Navajo Nation. The title of the paper was "Help for the Struggling Second Language Reader: An Innovative Reading Comprehension Strategy." Dr. Mark Dal Porto, associate professor of music, had his work “Peace Resounds” performed at the 2007 Ithaca College Choral Composition Festival in Ithaca, New York on November 10. The festival was sponsored by Ithaca College and Theodore Presser Publishing Company. Dal Porto’s work was performed by the Westborough High School Concert Choir (from Westborough, Massachusetts) directed by Joseph Stillitano. The composer had the opportunity to work with the choir earlier in the day prior to the performance that evening.
Dr. Zhiming Liu, associate profesor of biology, and his graduate student, Mr. Johnny Sena, have recently submitted the DNA sequences of two new genes to GenBank. The two genes they discovered are prostaglandin receptor A and B which are important for regulation of ovarian functions (ovulation) in Xenopus laevis. The accession numbers to the GenBank are bankit1038196 EU290602 and bankit1038200 EU290603. Dr. Zhiming Liu, associate profesor of biology, and his collaborators (Dr. Su Xiu-Rong, Dr. Lv Zhen-Ming, Dr. Li Tai-Wu) in Ningbo University, China, and Dr. Paul K. Chien in San Francisco University, USA, have recently published a paper in Chinese Journal of Agricultural Biotechnology. The title of the paper is “Analysis of isozymes related to energy metabolism of adult Tegillarca granosa,” (2007) 4:163-166. Cambridge University Press.

Registration begins on Tuesday, Dec. 11 at 9 a.m. [listing of 2008 springl classes] Ginger's Safety Tip of the Month for December Fire Safety Tips for the Christmas Holidays Here are some guidelines when decorating the office for the holiday season: 1. The best locations for decorations include reception areas, lobbies, foyers, and break rooms. Please do NOT block exit corridors, nor place in such a manner as to obstruct the view of exit signs, fire alarm pull stations, fire extinguishers, or hose cabinets. 2. Always check Christmas lights whether they are old or fresh out of the box. Examine them carefully for broken or frayed wires or loose connections. If you find any of these conditions, do not attempt to repair it. Discard the lights. 3. No open flames and candles in state owned buildings. No live cut Christmas trees allowed in state owned buildings. 4. Use of extension cords is discouraged; but if they are used, make sure they are in good condition. Make sure the extension cord is large enough to carry the intended load. (The thicker the cord, the greater the load it should be able to carry without overheating.) Never staple an extension cord to the wall or woodwork. It could damage the cord and present a fire hazard. Don't run cords through doorways or under rugs. The insulation on the cords can become damaged if the door closes on the cord, or if people step on it under the rug, causing a potential fire and/or shock hazard. 6. Turn decorative lights on only when you are at work. Never leave lights on when the office is unoccupied. Update from the New Mexico Higher Education Department – [click here] Help Soldiers Come Home for the Holidays – Many of our soldiers are facing yet another holiday away from home and loved ones. These courageous men and women have put themselves in harm's way to serve this country. Whether or not you agree with the war, this is the time of year for giving. Instead of Christmas giving gifts to each other this year, Bill and Gillian Andersen are donating some of their Merit Pay to bring a soldier home from special training for a four day pass so that he can see his wife and young children before he leaves for Iraq for yet a third tour (with a scheduled return date of December, 2008). The Air Force will not pay for soldier's ticket home because they do not pay for transportation to cover furloughs. I am sure many of us want to help, but do not know how. You may start with the USO at http://www.uso.org It is not important to give anything expensive, but there are multiple opportunities to give in ways that can make this time away from home easier for these young men and women. I am struck by the reality that some may never come home, so let us show them our love and generosity this season. Gillian F. Andersen, 505-562-2335. CSC Food Pantry: Donations Needed The Community Services Center is looking for individuals and organizations to help collect canned food for the Food Pantry. With the holidays quickly approaching, there will be many less fortunate families in the community that will be in need of assistance. We depend upon community support to help us keep the Food Pantry furnished, especially during the winter months and holiday season! The CSC Food Pantry provides these families with two bags of canned foods up to twice a year to help supplement where their may be shortfalls. If you, or your organization is willing to sponsor a canned food drive, or donate to the CSC Food Pantry, please contact the Community Services Center at 356.8576. We appreciate your support. Portales Band Booster Club Raising Money for Trip to Disneyland– The Band Booster Club is having a raffle to raise money to help send our high school band to Disneyland, where they have been invited to perform. We want to make sure that all of our kids get the opportunity to go –regardless of their financial circumstances. Golden Farms has generously made a donation that will allow us to raffle off two sides of beef, complete with processing. Each $5 ticket will give you two chances to win and all proceeds will go to support our local kids as they represent Portales at a national venue. The drawing will take place at the band’s Dec. 9 Christmas Concert. If you are interested in purchasing tickets for this raffle, please contact: Amanda Burnett at 760.4317.
