Eleven ENMU Members Attend MBAA Conference in Chicago
by Dr. Steven Palmer
Assistant Professor of Law

Over Spring Break 11 members of the ENMU community were involved with the Master of Business Administration Association International Conference at The Drake Hotel in Chicago. MBAA International is an association of 13 business discipline-related organizations. Approximately 850 professors attended this year’s conference representing most states and some foreign countries. Attendees came from North America, Europe, Africa and Asia.

Dr. David Hemley, professor of finance, and former ENMU professor of accounting Dr. Donald Morris (now at University of Illinois – Springfield) won the McGraw-Hill/Irwin Distinguished Paper Award for “Corporate Governance and the Ethics of Designated Senior Financial Managers: Tracking Sarbanes-Oxley Code of Ethics Waivers.”

Dr. Steven Palmer, assistant professor of business law/management, and Dr. Lee Weyant, associate professor of management, co-authored “Central City Makes a Promotion – Part C” with Dr. George McNary, assistant professor of business law at Creighton University. The paper won the Best Paper Award for the Business, Society and Government (BSG) Consortium.

This past year Dr. Palmer was vice president and Executive Proceedings Editor for the BSG Consortium. Dr. Palmer was re-elected vice president and named program chair for the 2008 BSG Consortium meeting to be held in conjunction with the 2008 MBAA International Conference. Business graduate student William Pratt was editor of the 2007 BSG Proceedings.

Dr. John Stockmyer, assistant professor of marketing, and Dr. Palmer conducted the panel discussion “Educating Future Business Leaders: Using Technology to Enhance Business Education.” Also participating in the preparation for the panel discussion were Dr. Weyant and business graduate student Teresa Main.

Dr. Janet Roehl, professor of communication, and Dr. Anthony Schroeder, professor of communication, prepared a presentation titled “Educating Business Professionals in Online Communication: Corporate Social Responsibility and Company Web Sites.” Dr. Roehl presented the session in Chicago.

Dr. Etienne Musonera, assistant professor of marketing, presented two papers in the Academy of International Business Midwest conference. The paper, “Spillover Effects on Value Added Activities in Emerging Markets: The Case of Sub-Saharan Africa,” was co-authored with Attila Yaprak and Leslie Monplaisir, both from Wayne State University. Dr. Musonera collaborated with Uzziel Ndagijimana of Campus de Mburabuturo on the paper “A Mixed Economic Integration Model for Africa.” The papers will be published in The Journal of International Business Research and Practice (JIBRP) Proceedings.

Dr. Justin Zhang, assistant professor of computer information systems, presented his paper, “Team Structure, Synergy, and Role of Information Technology,” in the Society for the Advancement of Information Systems meeting. Dr. Zhang was the sole author of the paper.

Three ENMU graduate students were in Chicago to present papers. Mr. Pratt presented three papers. “The Relationship between Bed Count and Net Revenue at Specialty Hospitals” and “Predicting U.S. Congressional Elections” (co-authored with Dr. Hemley) were presented in the BSG Consortium meeting. His paper “Ownership Issues in Specialty Hospitals” was presented in the Business and Health Administration Association meeting and published in the association’s proceedings. Bogdan Stanca, graduate business student, presented “Determinants of CEO Compensation: A Look at the Forbes 500,” a paper that was co-authored with Dr. Hemley. Communication graduate student Michelle L. Lievense presented the paper “Hospital or Zoo? Zoo Recommended: Compliance-Gaining Strategies and Emergency Healthcare Management” to the BSG Consortium.

The two award winning papers were published in the BSG Consortium Proceedings. The BSG Proceedings is a double-blind, peer reviewed publication that accepted for publication only 15 percent the papers presented at the BSG Consortium meeting. Dr. Palmer also had two papers published in the Midwest Academy of Legal Studies in Business Proceedings. The papers were “Is Academic Freedom at Risk?” and “The Delicate Balance: A Federal Human Resource Manager’s Guide to Privacy” (co-author Dr. McNary). The Legal Studies proceedings accepted less than 20 percent of the papers presented as a result of its double-blind, peer review process.

A note of interest, former ENMU assistant professor of business law Robert Sprague (now at the University of Wyoming) was awarded the Best Paper Award by the Midwest Academy of Legal Studies in Business. His paper was titled “Director Privacy and Corporate Governance: 21st Century Standards.”

Finally, Dr. Palmer and Dr. McNary presented the paper “Law in Movies: A Guide to Films for Business Law” to the Midwest Academy of Legal Studies in Business. At the conclusion of the presentation, Dr. Palmer was invited by Dr. Robert Bennett, the program chair for the Academy of Legal Studies in Business (ALSB) Conference, to present his paper and be a panel member in a discussion regarding the use of movies in business law classes at the annual conference this August in Indianapolis. ALSB is the national association of business law professors.

Art Professor Creates 'Mace' for Use at Commencements
Long Tradition in War and Academia Gregg Senn (blue shirt), professor of art, recently made this "mace" and its holder from black walnut for use at ENMU commencements. Also present at the presentation were President Gamble, Dean Michael Sitton, and Vice President Robert Vartabedian. The metal head has Eastern's symbol . Academic maces are descended from war clubs carried in medieval times by the bodyguards of civil officers. An academic mace symbolizes the authority invested in the president by a school's governing body. The mace is an integral part of commencement exercises when students are invested of degrees by the lawful authority of the university. Eastern's mace will, most likely, be carried at the front of the commencement procession by a senior faculty member.

Professor Discusses Nine Personality Styles
Story and photo by Roma Vivas
Communication Services
Dr. Kathleen Pittman says there are nine personality styles grouped into three triads.

According to Dr. Kathleen Pittman, associate professor of reading and language arts, personality styles are based on the Enneagram system, which is constituted by nine personality styles. The Enneagram groups these personality styles in three main triads.

The first triad is called the "instinctive" triad constituted by the personality styles of the challenger, the peacemaker and the reformer. The second is the "feeling" triad, which includes the helper, the achiever and the individualist personality style. The last is the "thinking" which has the observer, the loyalist and enthusiast.

According to Dr. Pittman, knowing the concept of personality styles is very helpful because the person gets to know him or herself better and understand how to live with others in harmony.

“When I started studying personality styles, I laughed at myself a lot because I realized that people like me are very hard to live with, but it has helped me a lot in my personal life,” Dr. Pittman said.

She says that she teaches her students, who are teachers themselves, to be aware of the different personalities of their students.

“I want my students acutely aware of the children that they teach, not to label them, but to be aware of their behaviors. I want my students to be more tolerant and observant of their students,” Dr. Pittman said.

For more information on the Enneagram system, and too see which personality style you are, go to http://www.enneagraminstitute.com.

On April 5, Ann Pettigrew from Graham Title presented ENMU president Dr. Steven G. Gamble a $2,500 check on behalf of the New Mexico Land Title Association for the Association's “Chili” Currier Scholarship Fund. This gift builds on their $10,000 donation received in 2004 when the scholarship was established to assist ENMU students.

ENMU Couple Meets 'One Time at Band Camp'
by Marc Schoder
Communications Services

Who would have ever thought that the line “One time at band camp...” from the American Pie movie would hold true for how an ENMU couple met.

Dr. Newton and Belinda Hilliard, married for 24 years, came to Eastern in the fall of 2000, with one of the appeals being that it was close to where they were born and raised in Plainview, Texas.

“We were both very familiar with Eastern’s reputation prior to coming here from the New Orleans area,” said Dr. Hilliard, associate professor of chemistry.

The couple met, ironically, at band camp during high school. “He was a year ahead of me in school,” said Belinda, executive secretary for Planning and Analysis. “We are opposite enough that we complement each other.”

The Hilliards are known for their evening wear.

The couple reflected on their first date and one particular part of it came to mind. “He came to my parents' place and he got to meet not just my parents, but other extended family members,” said Belinda. Dr. Hilliard added jokingly that he “ran the gauntlet that day.” They went to dinner and a show, but which show has long since faded from their memories.

Dr. Hilliard added jokingly that Belinda was the "only one who could put up with me.”

In addition to their jobs, the parents of three teenaged children keep themselves busy away from campus. “I’m the scoutmaster, and she’s my backup” said Dr. Hilliard gesturing toward Belinda.

The couple like to travel in their free time, however, there is one area in which their skillss do not mesh. “I have a brown thumb,” said Belinda. Dr. Hilliard said that he likes to get out in the garden, however, he discourages Belinda from joining him. “Over the years she has killed numerous plants,” he said with a grin.

The couple said that they will continue to call Portales home for many years. “We like the small-town atmosphere,” said Dr. Hilliard. Belinda added that they are able to let their kids play in the yard without worrying about them disappearing.

Other things the couple like about Portales are the sunsets and the 300-plus days of sunshine a year.
“I can walk out my back door and see the Milky Way,” said Dr. Hilliard. He added that he loves Portales so much, he wants to be buried here.

The couple also enjoys working for Eastern. “Since we both work here, we can just walk across campus to each other's office if we need something or just want to have lunch together,” said Belinda. “The kids also know where to find us if they need us,” added Dr. Hilliard.

The couple noted that the University takes care of its employees. “When Belinda was in the hospital, the president of the university called to check up on her,” Dr. Hilliard said. “You don’t get that at a large university.”

The couple believes that one of the biggest strengths of the University is its small class sizes and the personal attention given to each student. “At most universities, you are sitting in large classrooms and the professor doesn’t even know you are there,” said Dr. Hilliard.

He noted that in the sciences, the department is receiving a facility and equipment that most small schools don’t get. “This is almost unprecedented for a small school,” said Dr. Hilliard. “It only helps build on Eastern’s great reputation.”

Belinda summed up the couple's Eastern experience: "Eastern treats us like family, and gives us the support we need to remain here as a family."

She added that the internship would give her an opportunity to gain some experience outside of the lab, as well as an opportunity to see another part
of the country.

She said she hopes to experience the "scientific world" outside of the laboratory, as well as making great contacts. Ms. Jones said being in the Washington, D.C., area will be a tremendously exciting experience in itself.

Ginger's Safety Tip of the Month

Everyday Office Ergonomics

Good ergonomics fits the task to you rather than forcing you to adapt to the task. That means you work in a comfortable, natural position and avoid straining, overreaching and awkward movements that can lead to painful conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, neck tension, tendonitis and upper body aches and pains.

· When sitting at your workstation, your feet are flat on the floor. Your seat does not press against the back of your knees or lower legs.

· Your monitor is at eye level, straight ahead and at a distance at which you can read the screen without leaning forward or backward.

· When you type, your elbows are comfortably at your sides, each elbow at a right angle, and your forearms are parallel to the floor.

· Your work materials are within easy reach.

· Your keyboard is positioned so that key stroking can be performed with your wrists, hands, knuckles and fingers in a relaxed, natural or neutral position.

· You type gently.

· Your armrests do not interfere with your movement.

· You maintain good posture.

· When possible, vary your work activities to break from repetitive motions and constant work positions.

Computing
Word series – changing the default font for things like page numbers, headers, footers, footnotes, and endnotes.
You can change the attributes of any style for the current document or for all documents based on the current template. If the current template is the Normal template and you select the Add to template option below, all of your ordinary new documents will reflect the style changes that you make.
• Choose Styles and Formatting from the Format menu.
• In the task pane on the right side of the screen, choose all styles from the Show: list.
• Right-click name of the style you want to change (the style names are fairly intuitive), then select Modify.
• Click Format, and then select the attribute of the style you want to modify (Font, Paragraph, etc.).
• Make the desired changes.
• Click OK.
• Click the Add to template checkbox, if you want the modified style to be added to the template. If you don't check this box, the modified style will affect only the document you are working on.
• Click OK.

Excel series – Linking Cells to a Textbox or Object
• From the Drawing toolbar, select Text Box.
• Add a text box to the worksheet.
• Select the Text Box, and press F2.
• In the Formula bar, create a link to a cell by typing = and then selecting the cell.
• The contents of the cell are displayed in the Text Box.

DAT file version update – To check that your computer is up-to-date with the most current versions of virusscan software, locate the red and white shield with a red “M” by your system clock on the bottom right side of your screen and click on it with the right mouse button. Choose “VirusScan Enterprise” in the pull-down box. Then choose “About VirusScan Enterprise” in the pull-down box. There are two things to look for; one is the “Virus Definitions” which should be at 5003 and the other is the “Scan Engine” which should be at 5100. If either one is not displaying the above versions, click on the red “M” again with the right mouse button, then choose “Update Now” in the pull-down box. This will open a dialogue box displaying the status of the update process. Once complete, close the dialogue box and rerun the “About VirusScan Enterprise” option as described above. If the version is not at or greater than the one above, please contact the Helpdesk at 562.4357 for assistance.

Telephony- Replying to a voicemail message
To send a reply:
• During or at the end of the message press 1 7
• Record reply and then press #
• Send by pressing #

To reply by calling the sender:
• During or at the end of the message, press 1 4
