Story and photo by Roma Vivas
Communication Services

"I am very passionate about Eastern." Tracy Henderson

tracy henderson

A former student regent at Eastern New Mexico University is the new director for the Office of Student Activities and Organizations. She earned a bachelor’s in communication, with an emphasis in public relations, and has almost completed her master’s in the same area.

”I am very passionate about Eastern; I believe in the education system, the faculty and staff; I could not wait to be back,” Mrs. Henderson said.

“Being the student regent showed me to look at the big picture. It was a life-changing experience.”

Mrs. Henderson tried the corporate world for a couple of years for companies like Frost Sullivan as their Corporate Communication Events Executive. When she saw a job opening at Eastern, she did not hesitate to apply. At the time, she was

living with her husband in San Antonio. “When the opportunity came to move back to the High Plains, we were thrilled.”

The Tucumcari native has three main goals for the office: to keep bringing live entertainment to campus; offer more activities targeted to non-traditional students; and to have more educational forums for students. Another big project the new director has planned is a leadership conference for faculty and small businesses which students will help run.

The new director is so passionate about ENMU that she even bought a little Greyhound hat for her unborn baby girl, Taylor.

“I am excited about the opportunities that we can provide students. I am back to my second family; I am back home!”

"I think that Eastern offers a place for prospective students to get a high-quality education."Misty Morgan

Misty Mogran, the newest recruiter for Enrollment Services, graduated from Hagerman High School (N.M.) in 2002. She received a history degree from Eastern in 2007, then became a recruiter on Aug. 20.

"I have been getting to know the office and learning about my job," says Misty. She is responsible for recruiting in the northwest part of the state, and will also assist with the retention of freshmen.

"So far, I like my job," says Misty. "I think that Eastern offers a place for prospective students to get a high-quality education, a home away from home, and many experiences that they can use after college."

Misty, who likes to read, visit her family and watch movies, says her ultimate career goal is to get a master's degree in museum studies and become a museum curator.

ENMU Receives Nursing Grant
by Wendel Sloan
Communication Services

The New Mexico Higher Education Department has awarded Eastern New Mexico University in Portales $239,000 for the 2007-08 fiscal year for expansion of its nursing program.

In the award letter, the Higher Education Department wrote, "We were impressed with several aspects of the program. We hope that they will serve as a model of best practices for other institutions."

Leslie Paternoster, new director of ENMU's nursing program, says the grant will help Eastern address a critical nursing shortage. "We are preparing associate degree nurses for the baccalaureate degree which the American Nurses Association has been trying to push for years," said Dr. Paternoster. "We are going to be aggressively recruiting nurses from the eastern side of the state, which is an underserved population.

"We are going to develop and advance collaborative partnerships among two- and four-year institutions, hospitals and other private and public sectors to enhance health care delivery throughout New Mexico."

Dr. Paternoster added that some of the grant money will go toward continuing professional development for faculty.

The Legislature provided additional funds this year to institutions with existing nursing programs to supplement faculty and staff salaries. The funds were awarded primarily to focus on supporting faculty recruitment and retention and student success.

For more information, call Dr. Paternoster at 562.2403.

Fall Wellness Contest

Overview: This semester we are having a completely voluntary contest between all the units on campus for participation in the Wellness Course: HPE 268-01. The unit with the highest percentage of participants in this course will win a $500 gift certificate to "Big 5 Sporting Goods" in Clovis. (You may enroll in one or two hours for this course with contest credit/points awarded accordingly.)

Eligibility: For those qualified, it is absolutely free to enroll in this course. Those qualified for free enrollment are: full-time faculty and staff and retired faculty and staff.

Unit "Definition": A unit will be defined as any department, division, college, etc. with at least 20 potential participants. As such, small units (e.g., academic departments) may want to combine with other departments or units. Upon completion of our enrollment period this fall on August 31, it will be the burden of the participating unit to document the numbers participating versus the numbers eligible in that unit.

Other Details: Again, involvement in this contest is strictly voluntary. Next semester this contest will likely be based upon a unit's percentage of returnees to this wellness program. Any questions should be directed to Bob Vartabedian at robert.vartabedian@enmu.edu or at 562.2312, or Mary Drabbs at 562.4344.

1-credit  (You need to accumulate 8 hours of activity sessions.)
2-credits (You need to accumulate 16 hours of activity.)

Beginner and intermediate levels will be available.  Hopefully, there will be enough people that teams will be paired up (mostly mixed-doubles) and partners will rotate on a weekly basis so you can meet a lot of people.  A "fun" tournament will be held on Oct. 20 with appropriate awards.

Meeting dates will be on Saturdays at 9 a.m. on September 8, 15, 22 and 29, and Oct. 6, 13 and 20.  It will not be necessary to attend all seven sessions. Meet at the tennis courts at 9 a.m. beginning Sept. 8 and bring your racquet (balls and water will be provided).

Departments May Order Shirts for 'Eastern Look' Program – Departments may place orders for the "Eastern Look" shirt program from Aug. 27 through Sept. 6. There is a PDF form on the intranet. Please list the employee's name along with the other information needed to place the order. The shirts will cost about $13.50 and will be a cotton and polyester blend.  Shirts are available to try on for sizing purposes.

For more information, call University Relations at ext. 4490.

Details About 'Eastern Look' Program – The main purpose of the "Eastern Look" program is to provide an opportunity for departments to participate in "Eastern Look" Fridays when the University welcomes a large number of campus visitors.

Departments may buy one green shirt per year for each employee with the expectation that employees wear the shirt on Fridays.  The purchase must be made through the “Eastern Look” program.

Employees may buy additional “Eastern Look” shirts to wear at work. These are shirts available in green, black, grey or beige and carry the University wordmark and department name.

Students or staff members wearing an “Eastern Look” shirt should know that they represent the University to others.  Behavior that would negatively impact the University by students or employees wearing their shirts will be addressed with the individual by the employee’s supervisor.

Units that require their employees to wear ENMU logo shirts as their work uniform may request permission to purchase additional shirts. These purchases must be approved by the unit’s vice president.  Also, other shirt styles may be purchased in colors for special events with the unit’s vice president approval.

The supervisor of student employees or student groups wanting to purchase uniform shirts must secure approval from the unit’s vice president. In addition, the vice president should determine if the shirts should be purchased by the individuals or the department.

The “Eastern Look” shirts will be ordered three times a year (July, January and May) through the Office of University Relations. A notice will be posted in the Monday Memo for two weeks when it is time to order. Departments will be directed to an online order form.

Kiwanis Collect Donations for Area Schools

Gathered at ENMU Bookstore – This is the 2nd year the Portales Kiwanis Club has sponsored the School Supply Drive. This year they expanded the drive to include the Dora, Elida, and Floyd school systems along with the Portales Public Schools through Jr. High.

They collected approximately $2,300 in supplies with $2,150 of it being monetary donations. The Clovis-Portales Elks Club presented the Kiwanians with a $1,000 check for the second year in a row. They also received a $1,000 community grant from the Portales Wal-Mart. Portales National Bank contributed along with several private individuals.

All the recipient school principals were greatly appreciative of the donations and felt the supplies would greatly benefit children of lesser means, according to Bobby Brunson of the ENMU Bookstore.

"The Portales Kiwanis Club thanks Clovis-Portales Elks Club #1244, Portales Wal-Mart, Portales National Bank, and all individuals who contributed to the endeavor. It would not have been successful without your generosity," said Brunson.

Pictured from the Kiwanis are, L-R: Bobby Brunson, Elwyn Hulett, Anthony Gennaro, Robin Wells, Milz Bickley, Thomas Smith, Jim Lee (also representing the Elks), and William Wood.

Kayla and Jason Paulk, ENMU student Cheyenne Ott, and Kevin (Cheyenne's boyfriend) on the Disney monorail
Kayla and Jason Paulk recently returned from Walt Disney World's Coronado Springs Resort, where Kayla was serving on the coaching/accompanying faculty of the opera workshop, V.O.I.C.Experience (Vocal Operatic Intensive Creative Experience) for the seventh consecutive year.

Founded in 2000 by famed Metropolitan Opera Verdi baritone Sherrill Milnes, this two-week workshop brings together the best voice teachers, vocal coaches and accompanists from around the world with fifty-five of the most talented young opera singers from the U.S. and abroad.  The program began with two evenings of concerts, appropriately titled Death by Aria, where each singer presented their best operatic aria.  Two evening master classes were given during the program, and Kayla was privileged to be the sole pianist for both.  One was given by Mr. Milnes and the other by Tito Capobianco, famed operatic director and founder of the Juilliard Opera Studio and many of the major U.S. opera houses.

The remainder of the week was filled with voice lessons, coachings, bio and headshot "make-over" sessions with NYC stylists and operatic managers, mock higher education interviews and consultations w/Dean Emeritus Bernie Dobroski, Northwestern University, health discussions with Dr. Michael O'Neal, physician to the Toronto Blue Jays, and mock operatic auditions with agencies from NYC and opera house managers from around the U.S., and six performances in the American Rotunda at Epcot, of which Kayla accompanied the program entitled Divas!  For more information about the workshop, go to:  www.voicexperiencefoundation.com

An additional highlight of the trip was spending part of one day with ENMU vocal music education student Cheyenne Ott, who was working at Walt Disney World this summer.  Following the Epcot performances, Cheyenne hosted the Paulks to a park hop that included Epcot, Disney-MGM Studios, and Magic Kingdom. They finished the evening by attending one of the Death by Aria concerts, where Cheyenne heard many exceptional operatic performances and was introduced to Sherrill Milnes prior to the concert.

Computing
Word series – Adding Diagonal Borders
Word has allowed you to add borders to paragraphs, text boxes, and tables for quite some time. Beginning with the introduction of Word 2000, you can also add diagonal borders to your table cells. This means that a border can appear from the top-left to the lower-right corners of a cell, or from the top-right to the lower-left. To take advantage of this type of border, follow these steps:

  • Create your table as you normally would.
  • Select the cell you want to have the diagonal border.
  • Choose the Borders and Shading option from the Format menu. Word displays the Borders and Shading dialog box.
  • Make sure the Borders tab is selected.
  • At the bottom left and right corners of the Preview area of the dialog box, you should see buttons that have diagonal lines on them. Click the line that represents the type of diagonal border you want to use.
  • Click on OK.

Excel series – Display Formulas in Excel Workshop
When creating Microsoft Excel worksheets formula results are shown in the worksheet NOT the formula. There may be times when it would be helpful if you could SEE the formula in the worksheet.
To display formulas:

  • Select Tools from the pull-down menu
  • Choose Formula Auditing
  • Choose Formula Auditing Mode

To resume seeing the results of the formula, just repeat the above steps.  Or you can use the shortcut keys for toggling formula auditing mode on and off: Ctrl+`.

DAT file version update – To check that your computer is up-to-date with the most current versions of virusscan software, locate the red and white shield with a red “M” by your system clock on the bottom right side of your screen and click on it with the right mouse button.  Choose “VirusScan Enterprise” in the pull-down box.  Then choose “About VirusScan Enterprise” in the pull-down box.  There are two things to look for; one is the “Virus Definitions” which should be at 5100 and the other is the “Scan Engine” which should be at 5200.  If either one is not displaying the above versions, click on the red “M” again with the right mouse button, then choose “Update Now” in the pull-down box.  This will open a dialogue box displaying the status of the update process.  Once complete, close the dialogue box and rerun the “About VirusScan Enterprise” option as described above.  If the version is not at or greater than the one above, please contact the Helpdesk at 562.4357 for assistance.

Telephony - Customer Service:  Some tips for good customer service:

  • Answer the phone by the third ring.
  • Smile when you answer the phone; it does make a difference.
  • Identify yourself and your department

Ginger's Safety Tip of the Month

OSHA has developed the MSDS form as part of the Hazard Communication Standard, or Right to Know regulation. They wanted to make sure you had one easy reference for every sort of information on a hazardous substance:

What it is.
Who makes or sells it.
Where the substance is located.
Why it’s hazardous.
How you can be exposed to the hazard.
What conditions could increase the hazard.
How to handle the substance safely.
What protection to use while working with it.
What to do if you are exposed.
What to do if there is a spill or emergency.

The material Safety Data Sheet was created and required by law as part or your "Right to Know" about on-the-job hazards.

Your employer goes to a lot of trouble to keep them on file for you-as your personal safety guide to the hazardous substances you work with.

Check the MSDS before you start any job using a hazardous chemical. That way you’ll know exactly what the risks are, and how to do the job safely. Then follow procedures and use recommended safety equipment. That way hazards won’t be so hazardous after all.

My Name is Joseph M.
I am: 15 years old
I am in: 9th Grade
My favorite things to do: Listen to music, hang out with friends, learn about earth science, and take care of animals!
My favorite foods: Pizza, most Mexican food, and hamburgers

Joseph M is 16.  He is described as a polite, intelligent and engaging young man who enjoys playing sports but has not been doing so recently.  In terms of job and career interests, Joseph enjoys carpentry and loves to work on cars.  In his current placement, Joseph helps his foster parents care for their livestock, which he seems to enjoy, as he is good with animals.  Presently Joseph feels somewhat isolated in terms of where he lives, and there are few readily available activities for him.  Joseph is behind in school and would benefit from a placement where academics and social activities are encouraged and supported.  Joseph wants many of the things typical teenagers want such as a cell phone and to obtain his driver’s license.  Joseph has several siblings currently living in the Albuquerque area he will need to maintain contact with.  While somewhat ambivalent about adoption, he is open to the idea of being adopted as long as he can maintain contact with his siblings. Joseph would likely benefit best from a placement with either a single male or a two-person family with a strong male role model who can offer unconditional support and encouragement, as Joseph has stated he often feels as if no one notices the good things he does.  ST
