ENMU Presenting 'Eccentricities of a Nightingale' – Eastern New Mexico University’s Department of Theatre and Dance will present the first Main Stage production of the season, Tennessee Williams' “Eccentricities of a Nightingale,” on Thursday-Saturday, Feb. 15-17. [view poster]

The play, in the University Theatre Center on the Portales campus, begins at 7 p.m. each night. General admission tickets cost $8, seniors 55+ $7, pre-college students $6, and ENMU students $5.

Directed by S. K. Buie, assistant professor of theatre at ENMU, the play takes place in Glorious Hill, Miss., shortly before the First World War. Alma Winemiller, a sensitive and lonely young woman, has become increasingly restive and disturbed by the fear that she will remain a spinster. Hemmed in by her stern minister father, and her deranged mother, she makes a final, almost desperate, attempt to win the man of her choice – a young doctor whose social-climbing mother frowns on his attachment to Alma.

The play centers on the complex relationship between these two, her touching attempts to sway his emotions, and his uncertainty as to where his heart should lead him. In the end there is to be only one truly beautiful moment between them, for neither can break the ties of family and position which draw them apart and which, inevitably, defeat Alma's hopes for a new and fuller life.

Tickets are available at the Box Office from noon-5 p.m. daily, and again at 6 p.m. on performance nights. Prices are: ENMU students $5; pre-college $6; seniors 55+ $6; general admission $8.

For more information, call the Department of Theatre and Dance at 562.2711, or the Box Office at 562.2710.

Eastern New Mexico University professor of communication Dr. Anthony Schroeder is recovering well in his Portales home after falling on the ice in front of the Communication Center on campus on Jan. 29.

“Eastern personnel responded immediately and treated me very well,” said Dr. Schroeder. “911 was called and I was on my way to the hospital within 15 minutes; I can’t complain.”

Dr. Schroeder said that for the next few weeks his classes have been moved onto Webct. The professor added that there were a few problems at first getting the classes up and going, however, they were quickly solved due the talent and concern of Ellen Gardiner.

Dr. Schroeder had his hip, which was fractured in two places, operated on at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock the day following the accident.

“They pinned and screwed my hip back together,” he said. Currently, he is recovering at home.

He said that he was within five feet of his vehicle where water was coming from the roof which had washed the ice-melting salt away from the ground. Dr. Schroeder said before he knew it he was on the ground and in pain. “I am going to physical therapy and doing exercises three times a day,” he said. Dr. Schroeder added that he is getting stronger by the day.

“The support I have received from everyone has been very nice,” he said. “I am deeply appreciative of it and I thank everyone for their concern."

(Dr. Schroeder is also organizing the State High School Speech and Debate Tournament, and noted that volunteer judges are needed.)

Ginger's Safety Tip of the Month

Walking on Ice

It's important that individuals recognize the hazards of slippery surfaces. Here are helpful hints from winter-safety experts that will reduce the risk of falling when slippery conditions exist:

Wear boots or overshoes with soles. Avoid walking in shoes that have smooth surfaces, which increase the risk of slipping. Do not wear slick soled shoes or high heels. Wear safe walking shoes and carry your work shoes.

Walk consciously. Be alert to the possibility that you could quickly slip on an unseen patch of ice. Avoid the temptation to run to catch a bus or beat traffic when crossing a street.

Walk cautiously. Your arms help keep you balanced, so keep hands out of pockets and avoid carrying heavy loads that may cause you to become off balance.

Walk "small." Avoid an erect, marching posture. Look to see ahead of where you step. When you step on icy areas, take short, shuffling steps, curl your toes under and walk as flatfooted as possible.

ENMU Physical Plant employees work very hard to keep the sidewalks free from ice and snow. But, even though there is ice melt on the sidewalk (usually blue crystals), the cold wind can refreeze the water turning, it back to ice.

SO WALK CAREFULLY AT ALL TIMES! Remember, the life (or broken bones) you save may be your own!

Over the past five years, the ENMU community has lost an unprecedented number of students, faculty and staff. Students have faced mourning the loss of their friends and family members while at the same time attempting to achieve academic success despite their grief.

In response to this grief, Counseling and Career Services will hold a weekly grief support group on Mondays from 7-8 p.m. in their conference room (SAS 214). If you would like further information, contact Susan Larsen at 562.2211 or e-mail her at susan.larsen@enmu.edu.

Everyone is welcome, so please feel free to join us. Remember, grief is not an enemy to be vanquished, nor is expressing grief a sign of weakness. It is a sign of being human.
