ENMU Presenting 'Eccentricities of a Nightingale' – Eastern New Mexico University’s Department of Theatre and Dance will present the first Main Stage production of the season, Tennessee Williams' “Eccentricities of a Nightingale,” on Thursday-Saturday, Feb. 15-17. [view poster] The play, in the University Theatre Center on the Portales campus, begins at 7 p.m. each night. General admission tickets cost $8, seniors 55+ $7, pre-college students $6, and ENMU students $5. Directed by S. K. Buie, assistant professor of theatre at ENMU, the play takes place in Glorious Hill, Miss., shortly before the First World War. Alma Winemiller, a sensitive and lonely young woman, has become increasingly restive and disturbed by the fear that she will remain a spinster. Hemmed in by her stern minister father, and her deranged mother, she makes a final, almost desperate, attempt to win the man of her choice – a young doctor whose social-climbing mother frowns on his attachment to Alma. The play centers on the complex relationship between these two, her touching attempts to sway his emotions, and his uncertainty as to where his heart should lead him. In the end there is to be only one truly beautiful moment between them, for neither can break the ties of family and position which draw them apart and which, inevitably, defeat Alma's hopes for a new and fuller life. Tickets are available at the Box Office from noon-5 p.m. daily, and again at 6 p.m. on performance nights. Prices are: ENMU students $5; pre-college $6; seniors 55+ $6; general admission $8. For more information, call the Department of Theatre and Dance at 562.2711, or the Box Office at 562.2710. Eastern Professor Recovering Well After Fall

Currently, he is recovering at home. He said that he was within five feet of his vehicle where water was coming from the roof which had washed the ice-melting salt away from the ground. Dr. Schroeder added that he is getting stronger by the day. “The support I have received from everyone has been very nice,” he said. “I am deeply appreciative of it and I thank everyone for their concern." Ginger's Safety Tip of the Month It's important that individuals recognize the hazards of slippery surfaces.
Here are helpful hints from winter-safety experts that will reduce the
risk of falling when slippery conditions exist: Walk consciously. Be alert to the possibility that you could quickly slip on an unseen patch of ice. Avoid the temptation to run to catch a bus or beat traffic when crossing a street. Walk cautiously. Your arms help keep you balanced, so keep hands out of pockets and avoid carrying heavy loads that may cause you to become off balance. Walk "small." Avoid an erect, marching posture. Look to see ahead of where you step. When you step on icy areas, take short, shuffling steps, curl your toes under and walk as flatfooted as possible. ENMU Physical Plant employees work very hard to keep the sidewalks free
from ice and snow. But, even though there is ice melt on the sidewalk
(usually blue crystals), the cold wind can refreeze the water turning,
it back to ice. TechTips –
