Jason and Kayla Paulk recently attended the New Mexico Music Educator’s Association’s 2007 All-State and Convention, held in Albuquerque on Jan. 3-6. Kayla served as accompanist for the 2007 New Mexico All-State Chorus, under the direction of Dr. Sandra Snow, Western Michigan University. The choir was comprised of approximately 240 New Mexico high school singers, selected by audition in October 2006, and gave an outstanding performance for a large audience at UNM’s Popejoy Auditorium.

Jason presented an interest session, “Warm-ups with Style,” based on his recently published dissertation topic, with the assistance of a demonstration choir from Sandia Preparatory School in Albuquerque, and members of the ENMU choirs. While at the NMMEA convention, Jason and Kayla joined numerous other music department faculty and administration in meeting and recruiting many talented New Mexico high school musicians.

Additionally, Jason and Kayla have created a musical program geared toward elementary school children titled “The Animal Fair,” and will be giving several presentations locally and in Florida. Their first presentation will be at James Bickley Elementary School in Clovis on Wednesday, Jan. 24, at 8:30 a.m. Wayne Anderson, Music Supervisor for Clovis Schools, will narrate, Jason will sing, and Kayla will play piano.

On Friday, Jan. 26, Jason and Kayla will give four presentations at Paterson Elementary School in Orange Park, Fla., as invited guests of the school’s Guest Fine Artist Series.

Poppy Johnson-Renvall, public services reference librarian at Golden Library, will present the program at the next meeting of the Friends of the Portales Public Library at noon on Thursday, Feb. 1, in the meeting room of the library at 218 South Avenue B.

Ms. Johnson-Renvall will show articles from the Japanese culture, especially kimonos.

A native of British Columbia, Canada, Ms. Johnson-Renvall has traveled extensively, and lived and taught in Japan for a couple of years. Her husband, Brian, is a graduate student in anthropology at Eastern. In addition to sharing information on Japan, Ms. Johnson-Renvall will talk about a Smithsonian exhibit that ENMU Family and Consumer Sciences and Golden Library will sponsor in 2008. It will be an interactive exhibit, and they hope to involve both the entire community and all departments of the university.

public, and new Friends are welcomed.

Human Rights Film Series Presenting 'Reel Bad Arabs' – The Human Rights Film Series will present "Reel Bad Arabs: How Hollywood Vilifies a People" at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 6, in Room 128 of the College of Education Building.

The following information was provided by ENMU professor Doug Morris:

This groundbreaking documentary dissects a slanderous aspect of cinematic history that has run virtually unchallenged from the earliest days of silent film to today's biggest Hollywood blockbusters. Featuring acclaimed author Dr. Jack Shaheen, the film explores a long line of degrading images of Arabs--from Bedouin bandits and submissive maidens to sinister sheikhs and gun-wielding "terrorists"--along the way offering devastating insights into the origin of these stereotypic images, their development at key points in US history, why they matter so much today, and how this powerful form of public education is linked to US violence against Arabs and Muslims in the Middle East.

Shaheen shows how the persistence of these images over time has served to naturalize prejudicial attitudes toward Arabs and Arab culture, in the process reinforcing a narrow view of individual Arabs and the effects of specific US domestic and internationl policies on their lives. By inspiring critical thinking about the social, political and basic human consequences of leaving these Hollywood caricatures unexamined, the film challenges viewers to recognize the urgent need for counter-narratives that do justice to the diversity and humanity of Arab people and the reality and richness of Arab history and culture.

For more information, contact Doug Morris at 562.2207, or e-mail doug.morris@enmu.edu.

General Comments and Compliments

"I saw the article on 'Ralf' the mascot and it made me smile. I remember that era well.

"Dad (Dallan Sanders) had just become the housing director around that time – 1966. I was six and Rob was four. We knew George Ross. I think he and Pat Trembley both might have lived in Eddy Hall the year before when dad was the hall director there.

Anyway, Rob and I loved the fact that we KNEW Ralf. :) Years later, George Ross was the head girls' basketball coach at Clovis High when I was playing basketball at Portales High School. He had a great team. I remember that one of my first games as a varsity player was against his team in the Clovis tournament. It felt kind of strange to look over and see him as a head coach. I still thought of him as 'Ralf.'

"I remember him and those times very fondly." – Penny Sanders

Ginger's Safety Tip of the Month

Cold Weather Protection

Working outdoors poses additional challenges in the winter months. Colder temperatures and wind chill can cause frostbite or hypothermia if workers are not properly prepared. Encourage employees to follow these OSHA-recommended precautions to avoid overexposure to winter weather:
1. Wear several layers of loose clothing with a base layer made of a wicking material to help keep moisture away from the skin. Covering your head and mouth will help protect your lungs and prevent heat loss.
2. Go indoors to a warm, dry area for frequent short breaks.
3. Be sure to stay hydrated with beverages such as sports drinks. Avoid caffeine and alcohol.
4. Train workers to recognize the symptoms of cold-related illnesses and the precautions to avoid them.

For more information about frost bite or hypothermia, please contact the Safety Office at #2796 or by e-mail to ginger.creighton@enmu.edu.

Community Services Center Senior Meal Site

The Community Services Center is a 501(c3) private not-for-profit corporation which has been in existence since 1965. We serve as the sponsoring agency for many programs in our community. These programs include, but are not limited to the following: The Senior Meal Site; Adult Day Care; Foster Grandparent Program; Senior Companion Program; Home Care Programs; Retired Senior Volunteer Program; senior transportation; Food Pantry; Commodities; assistance with gas, wood, or propane through the PNM Good Neighborhood Fund; rent/mortgage and food assistance through the FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency); and water utility assistance through The Salvation Army.

The Senior Meal Site located at the Center prepares and provides hot, nutritious meals in a congregate setting for seniors. These meals are served Monday through Friday from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm. A charge of $4.00 per meal is assessed to those under the age of 60, anyone over the age of 60 is asked to donate $2.00 for each meal. The Senior Meal Site is unique in the sense that it provides hot, nutritious meals to seniors within Roosevelt County in a Congregate Setting. Seniors look forward to this daily outing because it provides an opportunity for them to socialize with other seniors from within the community, while enjoying a well-balanced meal.

Home delivered meals are another service provided through this program. This service is for seniors who are 60 or over who are homebound. In order to qualify for home delivered meals, a home assessment is completed, upon approval the service will commence. As with the Senior Meal Site, these services are provided Monday through Friday, with the meal being delivered between 10:30 am and 12:30 pm. Both of these programs rely heavily on community and individual donations.

If you would like more information about the Senior Meal Site, or any other information about the programs and services offered through the Community Services Center, located at 1100 Community Way in Portales, please call 356.8576.
