David Moon Shares Squirrelly Story of Wild Animal Rescue
(tale and photos by David Moon)
Thanks to the dedication of the staff of the Purchasing Department, a wild animal was recently trapped humanely, and released back into the wild kingdom of Eastern's campus. The little guy enjoyed the comforts of the department's copier room until he decided to munch on dry oats and grass.

The Purchasing Department and Sir Squirrel wish to thank Dr. Anthony Gennaro for his expert advice, and Ginger Creighton and James Chacon for furnishing a means to capture the little fellow.
Rebecca Ingram, summer work-study for Purchasing, drove and then released the escapee from squirrel stew into the ENMU wilds.

Interview with David Baca: Master's Student and Church Volunteer
interview and photo by Wendel Sloan
Communication Services

Q. What is your major at Eastern and when do you expect to graduate?

A. My major at ENMU is a master's degree in counseling. I should graduate in the year 2010. I also work on campus for Information Technology Services.

Q. Where did you grow up, and tell us about your family?

A. I grew up in Clovis. After getting a degree in retail marketing, I moved around – Lubbock, Texas, and and Colorado. Then I received a degree in sound tech from South Plains College in Levelland, Texas.

I have an older brother, Frankie Baca, who is an artist, and my little sister, Lara Garcia, works for Homeland Security in Phoenix, Ariz. My mother, Josie Sena, is working on her master's degree at ENMU in bilingual education and should complete her degree within a year.

Q. What brought you to Eastern?

A. I liked ENMU and wanted to get an education here, since I lived In Clovis.

Q. Tell us about your counseling work and the church you do it for?

A. The purpose of Faith Christian Family Church's Celebrate Recovery program is for fellowship to celebrate God's healing power in our lives through eight recovery principles and the Christ-centered 12 steps. This experience allows us to be changed. By working the steps and applying their Biblical principles, we begin to grow spiritually. We become free from our addictive, compulsive and dysfunctional behaviors. This freedom creates peace, serenity, joy, and, most importantly, a stronger personal relationship with God and others. I volunteer every Tuesday night to help all those in need.

Our theme is "Helping Hurting People!" We meet every Tuesday at 7pm. in the 180 Building of Faith Christian Family Church at 3401 N Norris in Clovis. The pastors are Dr. Melissa and Steve Watkins.

Q. What are your thoughts about the group of guys and gals you play noon-time basketball with?

A. Basketball in the highlight of my day. I enjoy it all and the people I play with.

Q. What are your future plans?

A. My plans are to finish my education and work with those who need help in anyway. I would like to become the best person I can become and help others to do the same.

President Gamble and Regent President Gurley Speak at Roswell Dedication

President Gamble and and (far right) Board of Regents president Jay Gurley spoke on Thursday at the ENMU-Roswell re-naming ceremony of the Occupational Technology Center to the (center) Lawrence C. Harris Occupational Technology Center. (second from left) ENMU-Roswell provost Judy Armstrong also spoke.
(story and photos by Donna Oracion)

For the first time in campus history, a building at Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell has been named in honor of an individual. That individual is Lawrence C. Harris. On Thursday campus and community leaders gathered in a ceremony to officially rename the Occupational Technology Center the Lawrence C. Harris Occupational Technology Center and dedicate the building in Harris’s honor.

Harris, celebrating his 89th birthday, attended the ceremony with a number of family members. He said he was grateful for the recognition. “I’ve worked with many people over the years who deserve a lot of the credit, but it’s gratifying to be involved with this institution and its growth,” Harris thanked Dr. Steve Gamble, ENMU President, for his support of the Roswell campus and said there are now new opportunities for growth.

A prominent Roswell oilman for over 50 years, Harris has been a strong supporter of the ENMU-Roswell campus for more than 30 of those years. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Oilfield Training Program and in the construction of the Oilfield Training Center, which was later renamed the Occupational Technology Center (OTC). He served on the Community College Board for ten years and on the Community Advisory Council for eight years. He served as chairman of the first bond issue campaign committee for ENMU-Roswell in 1981 and he served as chairman of the mill levy campaign required by the legislature in 1987. He was co-chairman of the OTC Advisory Board and served on the Board of Directors of the OTC Foundation. Earlier this year, Harris was named an Emeritus member of the ENMU-Roswell Foundation.

Harris also has a long history of financial contributions to education bond campaigns, student educational trips, the College Access Program Scholarships (CAPS), and matching grant programs. He has received numerous awards for his generosity, dedication and community service. In 2002, Harris was selected to receive the first ‘Distinguished Service to ENMU-Roswell’ award presented by the ENMU-Roswell Foundation. That award is now called the ‘Harris Award for Distinguished Service to ENMU-Roswell.’

In her comments during the renaming ceremony, Dr. Judy Armstrong, Provost said while the process to name a university building after a person is not easy, Harris was a logical and more-than-worthy person to recognize. “If ever anyone devoted a lifetime to giving – money, time, talent, it is Larry Harris,” she said. “It is a privilege and a blessing to know and work with Larry. His tireless efforts on behalf of ENMU-Roswell and our community have helped countless numbers of people. I can think of no one more deserving of this recognition.

Travel Voucher Available on Intranet – The Travel Voucher is now available on the intranet as a PDF form. You will need to make a copy for your records before submitting the original to the Business Office.

The Requisition is also available on the intranet as a PDF form. A requisition number will automatically be assigned when the form is opened. You will need to keep a copy of the requisition before sending it to the Business Office. If you need to prepare a second requisition, use the back key on the browser to go back to the menu and select Requisition again. When you go back in, the form will have another number. For this reason it is not recommended to "view" the form.

To access the Travel Voucher and Requisition, go into the intranet [http://inside.enmu.edu/] or go to ENMU home page, click on Faculty and Staff]; click on Forms; click on Business Office and then click on either Travel Voucher or Requisition.

The Business Office will have a supply of Travel Vouchers and Requisitions until depleted.

Please contact the Business Office at 562.2611 if you have any questions.

Absence Report Form Available Online—The Report of Absence for Exempt Employees professional and at-will form is now available on the intranet under Personnel forms. If you have any questions, contact Personnel Services at 562.2115.

Please Help Save Energy—As many of you are aware, the University is experiencing major increases in utility costs. The electric bill through March is approximately $230,000 higher than last year. Please help to conserve electricity by shutting off lights in classrooms, dorm rooms, offices and other areas when not in use. Thank you.
