ENMU Professors Help Revive Bosque Redondo History
Story and photos by Roma Vivas
Communication Services

"Learn from the past... Transform the Future"

Faculty members from Eastern New Mexico University helped plan a memorial site at Bosque Redondo State Monument near Ft. Sumner, which tells the story of how 10,000 Navajos and hundreds of Mescalero Apaches were forced to move to the Indian reservation during the 1860s, with deadly consequences.

Dr. Elizabeth Galligan, assistant professor of bilingual education; Dr. Gerald Gies, chair of History, Humanities, and Social Services; Dr. Linda Gies, history professor, and Dr. Donald Elder, history professor, volunteered for the project.

In 2003, the New Mexico Legislature appropriated funds for a memorial at Bosque Redondo State Monument and asked universities to become partners in the effort. ENMU’s faculty volunteers stepped forward with the support of Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Robert Vartabedian.

In 2006, state legislators funded a symposium at the Bosque Redondo to help teachers gain a better grasp of how to incorporate the site’s history in their classrooms. Project Director Yolanda Nava of the New Mexico State Monuments Office held a number of meetings in New Mexico and Arizona to plan the symposium. Drs. Galligan, Gies and Elder were involved in the planning.

The symposium was held Saturday, June 23 at Fort Sumner High School and Bosque Redondo. The symposium included several workshops about the Mescalero Apache and Navajo cultures. For some tribal participants, the symposium was especially moving. Both the Navajo and Mescalero Apache consider the site sacred ground because hundreds of tribal members died there.

For more information on the Bosque Redondo State Monument go to: www.nmmonuments.org.

Inside the memorial there are different displays where visitors can read about the history of Bosque Redondo
Shrine, where some tribal members have brought stones from sacred places to commemorate those who died

Spanish Immersion Institute 2007

The Spanish Immersion Institute for 2007 ended successfully last week after eight days of intense classes. This year the institute had nine students who ate, slept and studied together with the guidance
of Dr. Vitelio Contreras, associate professor of Spanish, and Geni Flores, instructor of bilingual education.

“The goal of the institute is to help bilingual teachers who need to pass the State of New Mexico Competency
Spanish Exam,” Ms. Flores says. “Nonetheless, over the years many have joined the Institute to polish their Spanish skills.”

Typically, the students’ day began at 7 a.m. when Dr. Contreras and Ms. Flores joined them for breakfast. The rest of the day was filled with intense Spanish classes. But students enjoyed a variety of entertainment, such as dancers, musicians and even a magician. They also had the opportunity to learn about different Spanish-speaking countries from native citizens.

During the eight days, the students and professors can speak only Spanish and anyone caught speaking English has to pay a fine of 25 cents per word.

Some attendees had to wait in line to get their hands on a delicious hamburger, others decided to stay cool under the shade.
Entertainment was provided by the Kene Terry Band
Everyone was having such a good time that some decided to dance and even join the band up on stage
Is it the Lockness Monster? Leviathan? Sponge Bob? No! It’s Professor of Art, Greg Senn, scuba diving. Attendees also had the opportunity to cool down in the pool.

General Comments and Compliments

"I thought that you might enjoy this article about the class that we taught the past two weeks. Thanks to all of you for helping make it such a success. I think that it reflected very favorably upon Eastern New Mexico University, and hopefully the participants will help direct their students’ attention our way when it comes to choosing a college. I would also like to commend my colleagues Alex, Mike, and Jerry, who all did a superb job of instructing. The feedback that I have received from the participants about them has been very positive." – Dr. Donald Elder (Professor of History and Interim Chair of Communicative Arts and Sciences) [click here to see photo from article printed in "DeBaca County News"]

Symptoms of Heat Stroke:
* Dry, hot skin with no sweating, mental confusion or losing consciousness.
