Subject: Lincoln County Recycling Hits the World Wide Web

Lincoln County Recycling Hits the World Wide Web”

Recycling in Lincoln County has gone global with the launch of a new website, www.greenlincoln.org and creation of a new Lincoln County web group at http//groups.yahoo.com/group/lincolnmfreecycle/. Both sites are now available to assist county residents in diverting usable items such as used furniture, appliances and other household goods from being discarded in the solid waste stream and eventually, into the regional landfill. An Otero County Freecycle web group has been in existence for some time.

Green Lincoln.org is a local creation. The purpose of greenlincoln.org is to provide a place where people can find or provide information on a variety of topics including ‘green construction’, community clean up events and recycling. The site was launched earlier this spring.

Freecycle, a non-profit collection of local groups giving and getting items for free, started in 2003 in Tucson and has expanded to across the United States, since March 2007 including Lincoln County and Otero County, and in 74 other countries. Free cycle is a collection of Yahoo.com membership groups formed to enable people to give away at no charge used, unwanted household or business items. Free Cycle rules include sharing items at no charge, no bartering and xxx. Some 3, 707,975 people now belong to Freecycle including a growing number in Lincoln and Otero Counties. Since its inception Freecycle has also been found to reduce waste, save precious resources and ease the burden on landfills. Individuals can join Free cycle on-line in an easy, several minute  registration process.

In a recent local example, a local Freecycle member offering several hundred used patio pavers to any one on Free cycle across the internet. The offer was seen by a couple from Piñón, in extreme southeastern Sacramento Mountains, who later traveled to Ruidoso to pickup the unused items. The pavers were reused rather than being disposed of as construction waste in the Otero/Lincoln County Landfill or Mesa Verde Construction waste landfill in La Luz.

Several local websites, including www.lcswa.org and www.vor.org/solid waste also offer information on residential and commercial recycling items and locations. The Ruidoso Chamber of Commerce web site, www.ruidosonow.org, is also expanding its coverage of recycling throughout the Ruidoso region in the near future.

Other non-web options for giving away usable items include the Lincoln County Medical Center Auxiliary Thrift Shop and the Lincoln County Humane Society Thrift Shop, now at the “Y’ on Highway 70. Become a recycler.
