Student Affairs Vice President Retiring to Colorado Mountains
Story and photo by Wendel Sloan
Communication Services

“Someone once told me life is for real and there are no dress rehearsals."Dr. Gary Musgrave

After serving Eastern as vice president for Student Affairs since July 1, 1999, Dr. Gary Musgrave will retire this fall.

"We were very fortunate to have Dr. Musgrave directing Student Affairs since 1999. Under his leadership, Eastern has had a very dynamic and progressive student life. We wish him a very enjoyable retirement," said Dr. Steven Gamble, ENMU president.

Dr. Musgrave's 40-year career in student affairs began “by accident.”

After graduating from Indianola High School in Indianola Neb., he went to Northwest Missouri State University to play sports, but his grades did not match his athletic ability. “Asked to leave,” he returned a couple years later

married and more mature. After the vice president for Business Affairs gave him a job washing university cars, his work ethic led to a position as a residence hall director.

He later attended the National Student Affairs Association Conference in Denver, Colo., where he was interviewed for student activities director at Mississippi State University by the vice president for Student Affairs. At a conference cocktail party, his future boss – pointing to Gary – announced loudly, “There is my new student activities director.”

After being director of Student Activities at Mississippi State, Dr. Musgrave served as director of Student Development at Hastings College in Nebraska, and as vice president for Student Affairs at Buena Vista University in Iowa, and at Chadron State College in Nebraska, before arriving at Eastern. “What a beautiful ride I have had; I’ve been blessed,” he says. "I have had forty years in student affairs and 26 years as a vice president. I could not ask for more."

Rhonda Garcia, who worked at Eastern from 1977-2006 and served as Dr. Musgrave's secretary from 1999-2006, said from her Colorado retirement home, “When Gary came to Eastern, he recognized my abilities and went to bat for me. He was a breath of fresh air. He brought a new style and fresh ideas. He wasn’t a micro-manager, but trusted people and they responded. People became more relaxed. He was laid back, and that was an effective style. I truly enjoyed working for him.”

Dr. Musgrave earned a bachelor’s in education and master’s in counseling and guidance from Northwest Missouri, and a doctorate in college student personnel, counseling and cognate in management from Mississippi State.

Born and raised in southwest Nebraska in the faming community of Indianola, Dr. Musgrave’s father farmed and his mother worked for many years as the bookkeeper for a local oil company. His mother passed away 10 years ago and his father 40 years ago on the same day in September.

Dr. Musgrave’s three brothers and one sister are retired: two from education, one from business and the other from farming and ranching.

In high school Dr. Musgrave participated in football, basketball, track and field, baseball, plays, music and more. “I was a typical boy in small-town America,” he says. “The kids and families did everything together. I threw the discus and played football in college, but my throws were not anything to brag about and I became a blocking tight end before it became fashionable.”

He will have been married to Jonel (Jo) Leffler, an elementary teacher, 40 years in December. They have two grown children: Kitren who is married to Ryan Magley and they have a son Braxton; and Brock who is married to Brandi. All live in the Denver area

“My work at Eastern has been a gift, a joy,” he says. “There are so many good people at this university and in this community. I have been blessed to have wonderful people working with me to help students. I will miss the students and my staff.

“I am indebted to Dr. Everett Frost for giving me this administrative opportunity and to Dr. Steven Gamble for giving me support to continue doing some beautiful things with faculty, staff and students. The challenges were only opportunities and the enjoyments are too many to count, but all involved people.”

Dr. Musgrave, leaning reflectively back in his office chair in the Student Academic Services Building, said he believes Eastern’s strengths are people--faculty, staff and students--wonderful facilities, excellent academic programs, competitive athletic programs and the people of Portales.

What will he miss most about Eastern? “I will miss the perceived crisis, the laughter and kindness of my staff, the joy of making the first cup of coffee for the folks in SAS, the varied athletic contests, kids telling me they did this or that and needing a pat on the back. I will miss Eastern, but I will never forget this beautiful place.”

Diana Cordova, director of Multicultural Affairs, said that Dr. Musgrave was more than a boss and a leader. "He has been a caring person and attentive listener. He is the kind of person who gives you confidence and believes in you – with a stern voice if necessary. Work is never drudgery around Dr. Musgrave, but exciting. He is always interested in our families and what we have to say and offer. I would like to tell Dr. Musgrave that he is in trouble now, because the trouble with retirement is that you never get a day off."

Dr. Musgrave and Jo will not be bored in retirement. They like to read, take long walks and play in the Colorado mountains. They are building a new home near Winter Park, Colo. “Jo is the social one of our family and she generally gets us involved in many things outside the home. I love any kind of sport and watch too much on TV. We have one beautiful grandchild who is the present focus of our attention and we look forward to spoiling him,” says Dr. Musgrave.

“Our kids have some business ideas involving importing, and we would like to help them in some ways. We also enjoy cruising, and plan to travel to places off the beaten track.”

As he prepares to enter a new phase of life, Dr. Musgrave contemplated time's fleetingness. “Someone once told me life is for real and there are no dress rehearsals. How true. When I was younger, I always thought there were many tomorrows and plenty of time to do things. I know now how precious each moment is and the people who I love.”

He adds that many years ago one of his mentors told him to "always go out and make it a great day for the kids. Jo and I plan to continue making it a great day for the ‘kids’ because it brings us purpose for our lives.

“We trust we have made a difference in people's lives and have not made too many mistakes along the way.”

ENMU Choir Returns from China
(photos provided by Jason and Kayla Paulk)

The ENMU Choirs are safely home from China, having flown both in and out of the typhoon in Tokyo, as well as a quick departure from Tokyo just before the earthquake which registered 6.9 on the Richter scale.

We had a blast in China, even with our 24-hour delay arriving home and having been re-routed to Vancouver overnight (tough gig, but someone's gotta do it). The choral performances went well, the food was great, our Sichuan Conservatory students helped us translate and bargain shop all week, and we made many memories in some of the most historic locations in the world. – Kayla Paulk

Portales Wal-Mart Donates $1,000 to KENW-TV
To Help with Programming Recently accepting a $1,000 check from Wal-Mart in Portales on behalf of KENW-TV are: (L-R) Duane Ryan, director of broadcasting for KENW-TV/FM, Wendy Sharpe of Wal-Mart, Sheryl Borden, director of marketing for KENW-TV and coordinator for the annual auction, Dr. Steven Gamble, president of Eastern New Mexico University, and Susi Moore and Bill Marlin of Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart Foundation Gives to KENW-TV
by Sheryl Borden
KENW-TV

KENW-TV, the public television station serving Eastern New Mexico and West Texas, recently completed its first online auction. Monies raised during the annual auction go toward the purchase of programming. Thanks to the generous support from all of the participating businesses, as well as the Wal-Mart stores in Portales and in Ruidoso Downs, KENW, located on the ENMU campus, raised over $45,000.

Store manager Bill Marlin says, “Our culture is to contribute back to the communities, and Wal-Mart in Portales was pleased to be a part of this public television event.”

Susi Moore, assistant manager, voiced similar comments, “Wal-Mart is happy to be a part of the communities as a whole, and our associates are pleased as well. Our motto says it all, ‘Our people and our customers truly make a difference.’”

Wendy Sharpe, personnel manager for the Portales Wal-Mart store, indicated that the Portales Wal-Mart donates over $30,000 annually to the community, the schools, fire department, and area organizations and is glad the store is here in order to assist.

According to Ryan, the annual auction provides KENW with funds to help purchase the outstanding programs that viewers in Eastern New Mexico and West Texas enjoy. The auction is the largest of the station’s fundraisers, and this year’s efforts to conduct the Auction online not only saved the station thousands of dollars in production costs, salaries, and other expenses, it provided an outlet for everyone who wanted to support KENW to participate in the fundraiser.

Borden says she first contacted Marlin about donating gift cards to the auction, which the store has done for many years. During the conversation, applying for a Wal-Mart grant was discussed. The application was prepared and submitted to Ms. Sharpe, who said she was very pleased to be able to notify KENW that they had been approved. The Wal-Mart store in Ruidoso Downs has provided a $1,000 grant for the last five years.

Note of Appreciation – My family and I would like to express our sincere appreciation to all of you who extended your hearts to us during the past few months while dealing with Robert’s illness and death, as well as helping us cope with life afterwards. The visits, cards, calls, e-mails, texts, flowers, food, financial support and, most assuredly, the prayers have been a tremendous help to us. I cannot even begin to imagine how we would have managed this ordeal without all of the love, support, and encouragement shown by friends and family. Thank you! – Martie, Tatiana and Holli Watson; Jamie, Jason, and James Blocker; Tabatha and John Potter

ENMU-Roswell and ENMU-Ruidoso News

The ENMU-Roswell Special Services Occupational Training Program for students with disabilities held its Twentieth Annual Graduation Ceremony on Thursday, July 26 in the Performing Arts Center on campus. The featured speaker was Dr. Mary Beresford, Director of the New Mexico Governor’s Commission on Disability. Fifty-five students graduated from ten different programs in a number of areas, including Auto Mechanics, Child Care, Office Skills, Nursing Assistant, Veterinary Assistant, and Food Services.

The student speakers were Amy Garcia from Westminster, Colorado, and Brooke Hohfeld from Wichita Falls, Texas. Garcia received a certificate in Food Services. She thanked the cafeteria staff and her teachers and parents for believing in her and said she was grateful for the support she received through the program. Hohfeld received a certificate in Child Care. She plans to pursue another certificate in Office Skills and also possibly obtain an associate degree. Through tears, she said she was told when she was younger that she could do nothing. But with the training she’s received and with the help of her family, friends and church family, she can now do her own laundry, ride the city bus, and shop in local stores.

In her remarks, Beresford, who had polio as a child, said in the past society assumed people with disabilities were broken and needed to be fixed. But she said times have changed and attitudes have changed, so opportunities are now available. She said disability is a way of life. “We do not have to change who we are to make society accept us. I love my wheel chair. It’s who I am.” Beresford told graduates that going to college and being on their own is not easy. “You have opportunities now. You just have to take them. You are my heroes.”

Denise McGhee, Director of the Special Services Program, recognized the parents, campus administrators, staff, and instructors for their support of the students. She also thanked the many local businesses for serving as practicum sites and giving students valuable job experience. The Occupational Training Program provides training and appropriate services to students with disabilities so they can participate in the university community and obtain employment.

The Burdine family and foundation members, ENMU-Ruidoso staff and other community members joined together in a special celebration at the Kokopelli Country Club last Friday. As announced earlier last week, a new ENMU-Ruidoso scholarship is being established with the generous donation of $27,000 from the Gene Burdine Foundation. Funds derived from the annual Gene Burdine Foundation golf tournament are being earmarked for establishing the scholarship for the direct benefit of our students! The Burdine family and foundation members pledged their continued support and future proceeds from their annual golf tournament for the purpose of assisting local students wishing to enroll in the new ENMU-Ruidoso Hospitality and Tourism program.

The golf tournament is scheduled for Aug. 27 at Kokopelli CC. If you or someone you know is interested in sponsoring the event or wishing to play, you may pick up a registration form at the college, at the Kokopelli pro-shop or go to their website for more information. http://www.kokopellicountryclub.com.

He attaches well to strong-nurturing females while looking for a strong male role model to emulate. He enjoys having pets; his favorite pets are goats, dogs and small birds. Jerry is searching for a family that emulates loving parents that will provide him positive guidance and support. He would like to live in a healthy loving home environment. CO

Get the scoop on foster/adoptive parenting with the New Mexico Children, Youth and Families Department (CYFD) at a free ice cream social on Thursday, Aug. 2.

The social will be from 5:30-6:30 p.m. or so at the Clovis CYFD office at 221 W. Llano Estacado. Please join us for free ice cream with all the fixings. For the children, there will also be fun games, water balloons, bubbles and more. CYFD staff will be available to answer questions about foster/adoptive parenting.

Foster and adoptive parenting offers the chance to make a difference in the life of a New Mexico child. In Curry County, there are currently more than 89 children in protective custody with CYFD due to abuse and neglect in their home. Locally, there is an urgent need for more foster homes.

Statewide, there are more than 2,200 children in protective custody with CYFD. Nationwide, there are more than 500,000 children in foster care and there are foster parent shortages throughout the country.
