Employees and Students Attend Education Conference in Taos
Story and photos by Roma Vivas
Communication Services

Several Eastern New Mexico University employees and students attended The Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE) Fifteenth Annual Action Research Conference in Taos on June 7-9. A total of 99 people from around New Mexico and the country attended the conference.

Topics included: “Youth Action Research for Sustainable Agriculture in a Zuni Schoolyard,” “Another View: Alternate Ways of Seeing a Struggling Student,” “Arts Integration: Just Fun or Real Learning,” “Picturing Great Writing,” and many others.

L-R: Drs. Harmon, Galligan, Hurtado de Vivas, Pittman, Hazelrigg, Wells, Dr. Davis, Dr. Whitney, Dr. Waggoner and Dr. Everhart.

Attending from ENMU were (in alphabetical order): Maria Beene, Loretta Bridwell, Dr. Rebecca Davis, Dr. Jerry Everhart, Dr. Elizabeth Galligan, Dr. Jerry Harmon, Dr. Amy Hazelrigg, Dr. Elwyn Hulett, Dr. Romelia Hurtado de Vivas, Amberlynn Mauldin, Sherie Montoya, David Moore, Tammy Moore, Dr. Kathleen Pittman, Dr. Charles Waggoner, Dr. Robin Wells and Dr. Patricia Whitney.

“The Conference was a total success,” said Dr. Elwyn Hulett, director of the CTE (located on the ENMU campus).

First-time attendee Dr. Patricia Whitney, associate professor of reading, agrees with Dr. Hulett. “I have been to many conferences, but never as organized and non-stressful as the Center for Teaching Excellence Conference,” Dr. Whitney said. She also confirmed that next year she will be on the West Coast and will make a special trip to the land of enchantment to attend the conference.

The main purpose of the conference was to present the results of grants given by the Center to professionals who conducted different studies in the classroom. The conference encourages the dissemination of these research projects with the hope of expanding knowledge in those areas.
Another purpose of the conference was to make teachers aware of how education theories can be applied in their real-world classrooms. An example of this is Candice Lansford, Amanda Arnold and Dixie Van from ENMU-Roswell. The trio have been inseparable since they met a couple of years ago while getting their bachelor’s degree in education from ENMU on the Roswell campus. Their teacher, Dr. Kathleen Pittman, associate professor of reading and language arts who is located on the Roswell campus, encouraged them to apply for a scholarship to attend the conference.

"Teacher Trio" – (L-R): Amanda Arnold, Dixie Van and Candice Lansford

“I feel that I learned a lot of techniques that I can implement in the room,” said Ms. Arnold.

One peculiar fact about the conference is that since it was first started the host city has been Taos. According to Dr. Hulett, a few years ago there was a proposal to change the venue of the conference to Ruidoso, but most were opposed to the idea.

“The nice cool breeze, the friendly Taos people, and the diverse activities around the town give attendees something to look forward every year,” said Dr. Hulett.

"The Brains Behind the Conference" – (L-R): David Moore, Tammy Moore, Dr. Elwyn Hulett and Loretta Bridwell.

"The Morning Throwdown” show on KSEL radio (95.3 FM) in Portales, hosted by Eastern New Mexico University alum Kevin Robbins (1999) and Dr. Donald Elder III, professor of history at ENMU, were recently awarded the “DJ Personality Air Check” award by the New Mexico Broadcasters Association. The award honors the best on-air talent in different size markets. The show airs weekdays from 6:30-9 a.m.

The dynamic duo has being together for about five years invading the morning airwaves, and over two years with “The Morning Throwdown,” on the popular country radio station.

According to Dr. Elder (known on the air as Doc), the brain and creator of the show is Mr. Robbins.

A former student of Doc’s, Mr. Robbins started in radio because he did not like his old job, and is honored to be acknowledged by his peers.

“I thought it was fantastic this time around; it’s not the first time I’ve received an award but it is the first time the show has been recognized,” said Mr. Robbins.

Dr. Elder, an 11-year radio veteran, is grateful for the award.

“It’s an honor that the New Mexico Broadcasters Association says that you are the best; it’s not just based on ratings, but based on the quality of the material that you submit. It’s an incredible feeling,” Dr. Elder said.

He added, “We are not your typical DJ’s; we talk about bizarre stories that Kevin throws at me and I just give my opinion; 'The Morning Throwdown' is like hanging out with Doc and Kevin.”

The two and one-half hour show is filled with peculiar stories, sports, weather forecasts, occasional political discussions and entertainment news with Lisa Schmidt, who adds a feminine touch. Ms. Schmidt is also an ENMU alumna (1987).

Choir Camp Concert Enthralls Audience

One hundred and three (103) high school students who participated in the recent ENMU choir camp. Under the direction of Dr. Jason Paulk, assistant professor of music, the choir camp included students in grades 9-12 students from Albuquerque, Hobbs, Ruidoso, Clovis, Portales, Capitan, Lovington, West Las Vegas and others.

Eastern's choir camp has a 17-year history. The camp prepares students for the next year's all-state auditions. In addition, students have the opportunity to learn solo vocal repertoire, improve sight-reading and ear training, as well as sing in a great mass choir.

The choral music is selected from the following year's New Mexico Music Educators Association's All-State Convention repertoire. The music is classical, including works in English, Latin and German.

“We offered private voice lessons, group voice classes, master classes, sight-reading and ear training classes, conducting classes, mass choir rehearsals, a talent show and recreational activities,” said Paulk.

The five-day camp is the highlight of the summer for most of the students. Dr. Paulk said, “Students have the opportunity to perform with many other like-minded musicians and don't often get to perform with such a large and talented group of singers.”

ENMU choir camp concert was highlighted with pieces of famous classical composers such as Alessandro Scarlatti, George Handel and Felix Mendelssohn.

The concert was conducted by Dr. Paulk, and accompanied by Mrs. Kayla Paulk, ENMU; Mr. Brian Uerling, Clovis High School; and Mrs. Peggy Brady, Clovis High School.

The concert began with each section of the choir sing a piece. The opening “Sento Nel Core” was sang by the tenor voice class. The bass class sang “The Vagabond,” alto class sang “Nymphs and Shepherds,” and soprano sang “Sure On This Shining Night.” The choral portion of the concert featured two motets (sacred unaccompanied works), a spiritual “Beautiful City” by Dr. Andre Thomas, and even a selection by a native New Mexican composer from Lovington: “Omnia Sol,” by Z. Randall Stroope.

Other pieces included: “Ubi Caritas” (Maurice Durufle); “Come, Mighty Father” (George Handel); “Frohlocket Ihr Volker auf Erden” (Felix Mendelssohn) and “The Moon is Distant from the Sea” (David Childs).

The students also gained a taste of college life, including staying in dorms. “It gives them a preview of the collegiate perspective that most of them will have within a few years,” said Dr. Paulk.

They also make lasting friendships. “Many students comment that the relationships they make at choir camp are a highly significant aspect of the experience and will last a lifetime.”

Asked which he likes the best, the Choir Camp or ENMU Choir, Dr. Paulk said, “I couldn't choose which ensemble I ‘like the best.’ For me, every opportunity to make music with people is a very special experience, a gift of sorts. To share something as incredible as music making is to share a gift from God.”

Dr. Paulk just completed his second year at ENMU. He has many hobbies in his spare time, including blacksmithing, fishing, tennis, ping-pong, card games, mountain biking, hiking, skiing, lifting weights, painting (mostly watercolors), etc.

Dr. Paulk said, “A desire to become a better singer and musician is all you need to attend the camp.”

Dr. Paulk is going to lead the ENMU Choir to Beijing, China, this summer, taking part in an international choral festival including Chinese and American Choirs. The ENMU Choir will perform with a mass choir of about 300 people, conducted by Dr. Andre Thomas (the “Beautiful City” composer) from Florida State University.

Dr. Paulk said, “There will be several concerts in some really wonderful venues in Beijing, including the Forbidden City Concert Hall, at which few, if any, American choirs have performed.”

In addition, Dr. Paulk will present a lecture to Chinese choral directors at the first annual Chinese Choral Directors Association Convention in Beijing.

Man behind the scenes

Adam with his wife, Paulette, also an ENMU graduate, and two-year-old twin boys

Message from Adam Vance About His TV Experiences

Having left ENMU nearly 10 years ago, I took a lot of what I learned and applied it in my everyday life. I was hired by another ENMU alumni, Carey Moots, and began my professional life two days after graduating from ENMU in Albuquerque, N.M., at KOB-TV (NBC).

Then, a year later, I was offered a much better deal at KOAT-TV (ABC) where I worked for nearly two and one-half. While there, I covered many huge stories, many may remember: Cerro Grande fire, mass graves in Juarez, as well as the Indy 500. While in Albuquerque, I remained with my high school sweetheart, Paulette (Davis) Vance ('98) and married her in the summer of 1998 in Las Vegas, Nev.

Right after 9-11, I was called by a television station in Tampa, Fla., WFTS-TV (ABC) and offered a position. We took the position and moved across the country to embark on a new adventure. Shortly after arriving, I experienced a media frenzy many folks would recall, first was the Tampa Bay Buccaneers winning the Superbowl in San Diego, then, when the Space Shuttle Columbia did not return to Cape Canaveral, I was really put to the test. I was sent in to interview the grieving families of the seven astronauts, as well as an entire community stricken by this tragedy.

I have since moved to the CBS affiliate WTSP-TV and have been here for over four years. I have continued to cover many major events, both personally as well as professionally. Personally, Paulette and I have recently celebrated the 2nd birthday of our twin boys, Bryce and Connor.

I feel had it not been for ENMU, I would not be where I am today. The experiences and hands-on training I received truly prepared me for what I experience everyday. If any prospective student would be interested in doing an internship at my station, please have them contact me at: abcflorida@gmail.com.

Ginger's Safety Tip of the Month

During a lightning storm:

1. Avoid contact with corded phones
2. Avoid contact with electrical equipment or cords. If you plan to unplug electrical equipment do so well before the storm arrives.
3. Avoid contact with plumbing. Do not wash hands, take a shower, wash dishes or do laundry.
4. Stay away from windows and doors, and stay off porches.
5. Do not lie on concrete floors, and do not lean against concrete walls.
6. do not stand under trees for shelter.
7. Avoid being out doors. No place is safe outdoors near a thunderstorm.
8., A house or other fully enclosed substantially constructed building, offers your best protection against lighting.
9. A car with metal roof and sides is your second best protection against lightning. Just don't touch any conducting paths leading to the outside. It's the metal shell that protects you not the rubber tires.

As dramatic and exciting as it is to see, remember that lighting has potential to cause serious injury or death even with in the relative safety of indoors. The best thing you can do to avoid lighting danger is learn and practice good lighting safety.
