140 High School Juniors on Campus for Boys State This Week – 140 high school juniors are on campus this week through Friday for Boys State. According to the Boys State web site, the program adheres to the basic concept of teaching government from the township to the state level.

"Participants are exposed to the rights and privileges, the duties and the responsibilities of a franchised citizen. The training is objective and practical with city, county and state governments operated by the students elected to the various offices. Activities include legislative sessions, court proceedings, law enforcement presentations, assemblies, bands, chorus and recreational programs.

"High school juniors are selected by local American Legion Posts to attend the program. In most cases, expenses associated with attending this program are paid by a sponsoring American Legion Post, a local business or another community-based organization."

Communication Service

Eastern New Mexico University has welcomed Sheryl Holmes, 25, as the new data technician in Human Resources.

Coming from Hershey, Pa., Ms. Holmes has been in the area for six months with her husband, living at Cannon Air Force Base in Clovis.

"My husband works in the communication squadron with ground radio," she explains.

"I am about to graduate with my bachelor's degree in business administration and I always wanted a career in human resources. Eastern had a nice entry-level position opened."

Ms. Holmes will receive her degree from Elizabethtown College in Pennsylvania. This is her first job in human resources.

"I took the job because it's an entry-level job; I am hoping it will give me the experience to get on track to make a career," she says.

Ms. Holmes is excited about her new position. "Yesterday (Wednesday) was my first day. I like it; seems there are a lot of nice people here." When asked about the office ladies she works with, she says, "Yeah, they're nice!"

Most of Ms. Holmes's family is in Pennsylvania. She says, "I have a little bit of family in Colorado, and a little bit in Alaska.”

About her future, she says, "I don't know exactly how long will I work here; I’ll only live in this area as long as my husband works at the base."

In describing her job, Ms. Holmes says, "They just created my position, and I handle a lot of paperwork regarding applications."

"Hopefully, I will move up to the next level," she says.

Chinese Student Receives Award in Poster Competition
Story and photo by Mini Tian
Communication Services

Yang Peng, a Chinese graduate student at Eastern New Mexico University, received the 2nd place award in the recent student poster competition at the 6th Annual New Mexico IDeA Networks of Biomedical Research Excellence Symposium in Albuquerque.

Coming from the Sichuan province of China, Peng came to Eastern 21 months ago to work on his master in science, with a major in Microbiology. He is working in the Microbiology and Molecular Biology laboratories. Peng has finished his courses, and is working on his thesis. "Hopefully, I will get it done by this summer, but you never know."

Peng's poster addresses transporter protein, an issue that he's been working on.

Transporter proteins assist in the movement of substances through cell membranes.

"I have been working on this for a long time, probably at least a year. You have to show people the data, and how much you have learned about your project," he said.

There were 60 entries in Peng's category.

New 'Mr. President' in Student Government
Story and photo by Mini Tian
ENMU Communication Services

Mario Eduardo Cabrera Jr., senior criminal justice major, is the new student body president at Eastern New Mexico University. Originally from Texico, N.M., this "Mr. President" has been at ENMU "for awhile."

After graduating from Clovis High School, he received a scholarship for choir and cross country to Eastern (he ran cross country at ENMU for two years). Cabrera first went to ENMU as a vocal performance major five years ago, but then he figured out music was not his strength, so he dove into criminal justice.

Since coming to Eastern, he has been involved with student government and the Kappa Sigma fraternity. "I always got involved in student government, helping set up different events like the mud volleyball tournament when it first started. I help create the Safe Ride program (to provide a safe ride to ENMU students under any circumstance)," Cabrera said.

Asked why he wanted to be the student body president, he said, "I've worked in the Student Government office since I started at Eastern, and I've been a senate assistant and senator, and helped with elections. I know how the Student Government office works and I just thought that I should give back to the University."

Cabrera used his rich experience at Eastern to win the Student Government presidency. "I am pretty outgoing; I have the personality to go out there and talk to the students. Since I've been here for five years, I know the good and bad aspects of ENMU, you know, so from that experience, I could help out the students," he said.

Cabrera said it was a pretty tough campaign, even though his votes were actually double the number of his competitor (426-235).

"It was pretty tough actually; the girl who ran against me was the student body vice president at that time." Speaking of his competitor, Cabrera said she is an awesome student leader and perceived her as a hard worker. "She did a great job as the student body vice president, so it was tough to run against her," Cabrera said.

Cabrera's campaign staffs and friends, especially his fraternity brothers gave him a ton of help. Cabrera said, "I've been a leader in my fraternity, and I was the past president in the fraternity.

"My main job is to look at the students' needs. I am in charge of the Student Senate, in which each college has representatives based on the number of enrollment of that college. And I am in charge of putting together committees, speaking on behalf of the student body, and putting
together the student fees board. We distribute the fees to different student organizations," Cabrera explained. Last year they gave out $1.5 million dollars to student organizations.

The former student body president, Steven Frost, was also a Kappa Sigma. "Well, Steven Frost is one of my fraternity brothers, and he did a great job and he was a hard worker. Hopefully, I can surpass everything that he did. I want to work hard, and be a dependable
person, which I'm pretty sure that I am and help out the students to the best of my ability. Like I said, I love Eastern and I want to give back to the University," Cabrera said.

In his hometown of Texico, Cabrera has a big and close family. "We're always doing stuff together, but for the past couple of years, I haven't had the chance to hang out with my family as much as I would like, but they understand," he said.

In summing up his new position, Cabrera said, "We try to improve student life at Eastern. But to my family, I'm just Mario."

Ginger's Safety Tip of the Month

During a lightning storm:

1. Avoid contact with corded phones
2. Avoid contact with electrical equipment or cords. If you plan to unplug electrical equipment do so well before the storm arrives.
3. Avoid contact with plumbing. Do not wash hands, take a shower, wash dishes or do laundry.
4. Stay away from windows and doors, and stay off porches.
5. Do not lie on concrete floors, and do not lean against concrete walls.
6. do not stand under trees for shelter.
7. Avoid being out doors. No place is safe outdoors near a thunderstorm.
8., A house or other fully enclosed substantially constructed building, offers your best protection against lighting.
9. A car with metal roof and sides is your second best protection against lightning. Just don't touch any conducting paths leading to the outside. It's the metal shell that protects you not the rubber tires.

As dramatic and exciting as it is to see, remember that lighting has potential to cause serious injury or death even with in the relative safety of indoors. The best thing you can do to avoid lighting danger is learn and practice good lighting safety.

Computing
Outlook series
- To open a multiple windows in Outlook.
• Click once to highlight the folder to be in the new window e.g. Inbox + Calendar, Contacts, Tasks, etc. Press the RIGHT mouse button, and Select “Open In New Window”
• Press ALT-F1 to remove the navigation pane (it’s already open in the INBOX window)
• Do this for each item. e.g. Calendar, Contacts.
• Using the mouse size and move the windows so each is slightly visible. This makes dragging and dropping to each window a breeze. When you drag and drop with the LEFT mouse button, you will always be asked to confirm details. e.g. date and time on appointments or contact information.
Note: It is not necessary to close each program when shutting down the computer. One reason not to: When you leave Outlook running and shut down the computer next time you start Outlook the windows return back to the same exact place and size you had when you setup.

Choose “VirusScan Enterprise” in the pull-down box. Then choose “About VirusScan Enterprise” in the pull-down box. There are two things to look for; one is the “Virus Definitions” which should be at 5024 and the other is the “Scan Engine” which should be at 5100. If either one is not displaying the above versions, click on the red “M” again with the right mouse button, then choose “Update Now” in the pull-down box. This will open a dialogue box displaying the status of the update process. Once complete, close the dialogue box and rerun the “About VirusScan Enterprise” option as described above.
