Betsy Chavez Featured in Portales News-Tribune
by Karl Terry
Portales News-Tribune

One was looking for a voice and found it at Eastern New Mexico University. Another became the voice of ENMU.

Paul Hahn and Betsy Chavez represent two different ends of the spectrum for the 368 students who graduated from the college Saturday morning...

She originally majored in human resources management, but changed to psychology with a minor in business. Chavez said she had a desire to work in the Federal Emergency Management Agency and figured each area of study would help.

Though both Hahn and Chavez ended up in different areas of the college, they each found direction with jobs they picked up at the university.

Chavez took a job in 1999 at the information desk, and became the first person callers would hear when they dialed the university’s main number — 562.1011.

Diana Cordova Featured in Clovis News-Journal

(photos by Wendel Sloan)

Diana Cordova, in pinkish shirt, is pictured with her husband, kids, mother, brother and sister-in-law. The latter three came from the Canary Islands and Spain, respectively, for the Saturday celebration in Clovis of Diana's son's high school graduation.

Diana Cordova’s idea of a perfect Mother’s Day would be to spend it with her two children, her husband and her parents, on a beach in the Canary Islands where her mother lives.

Unfortunately, Cordova will instead spend this Mother’s Day cleaning out her husband’s construction company shop, getting it in tiptop shape for her son Derrick’s high school graduation party Saturday.

“That’s how good of a mother I am,” Cordova jokingly said. “I am doing all of this for my son.”

Like many of today’s mothers, Cordova juggles her time among home, raising her children and working full-time at Eastern New Mexico University, University, which
requires her to commute weekdays from Clovis to Portales. And like many of

today’s mothers, Cordova spends a lot of time away from her family, and that makes “family time” even more precious. [the rest of the story]

Upward Bound Re-Funded at ENMU-Portales

The Upward Bound Program at ENMU in Portales has been re-funded for five years. The University has received notification from the Department of Education that the grant proposal was approved to receive $348,146 for each year, totaling over $1.7 million dollars. Susan Cramp, director of the Upward Bound Program at Eastern, said, “The program, now in its fortieth year at ENMU-Portales, has assisted about 3,000 to 4,000 area high school students."

Upward Bound is one of the TRiO programs, funded by the Department of Education. The TRiO programs were originally established by the federal government in 1965 to ensure equal educational opportunity for all Americans, regardless of race, ethnic background or economic circumstance. In many communities, the TRiO programs are some of the only ones available that help students overcome the class, social, academic and cultural barriers to higher education, said Ms. Cramp.

According to Ms. Cramp, all Upward Bound projects must provide instruction in math, laboratory science, composition, literature, and foreign language. Students, who take the six-week summer academic component on local college campuses, may obtain college credit while still in high school. Upward bound also organizes tours of college campuses throughout the state and surrounding states. “A typical Upward Bound student, if involved from ninth to twelth grade, will visit 15 or more campuses,” according to Ms. Cramp.

Upward Bound services continue all year; students participate in bi-weekly Saturday meetings, tutoring throughout the school year, and other conferences, workshops, community service projects and trips.

Effective, Sept. 1, the ENMU Upward Bound program will recruit and serve eligible freshman and sophomore level students at Clovis, Texico, Portales, Dora, Elida, Floyd and Melrose. A student can remain in the program until they graduate from high school.

For more information, or to refer a student to Upward Bound at Eastern, call Ms. Cramp at 562.2452, or e-mail susan.cramp@enmu.edu.

Information from Webmaster About Updating Pages on ENMU's New Site – To make things easier on all of you, we're trying to handle more of the page updates through our office than before. As we demonstrated at the Back to School meetings and several places since then, every page will have a link at the bottom that says "Suggest a Change to This Page." We are asking everyone to try to use this link now.

This should make your lives easier because you can tell us exactly what changes your department needs without having to learn how to use Dreamweaver. We would prefer it if most of the departments used this method. Of course you can always print the page, mark up the changes and send it to us to update. That has always (and will always) be an option.

For those few of you who make daily or almost-daily changes to your pages, we can still help you with Dreamweaver and give you access to those pages, but because this is a new site, there are a few changes in how the pages need to be updated. You will need to go through the new training to show you how to work with the new style sheets and also give you some pointers on writing for the Web. Please let me (adam.morrison@enmu.edu) know if you are interested in taking this training to continue using Dreamweaver to update your pages.

If you have any other questions or concerns, please let me know. – Adam Morrison, 562.2123

Professors from Different Disciplines Meet to Discuss Philosophy – An average of six professors from different disciplines at Eastern have been meeting once every other week to study philosophy this school year. The Philosophy Club has been studying "Lectures on Philosophy" by the twentieth-century woman philosopher Simone Weil. The book consists of notes from her girl students in an introductory philosophy course Weil taught in a girls' high school in France in the 1930's. The main purpose of the Philosphy Club is for scholars from different disciplines to get together for conversation across the lines of their specialties. The club plans on meeting again next academic year for cofee and conversation. Don Holladay, Wesley Foundation director and assistant professor of religion, is the convenor. For more information, call Dr. Holladay at 356.6721, or e-mail don.holladay@enmu.edu.

Message from Information Technology Services About Security Patches – It is important to keep university data secure by installing critical security windows patches to computers. When a critical security patch is released, IT will download the patch and make it available to users. A gold shield will appear on your toolbar indicating a patch must be installed. Click on the icon and install the update.

You will have a two-week time period to install the patch. After the two-week period, IT will automatically install the patch to all computers on the ENMU network which have not installed the particular patch. While the patch is being installed, you may experience slowness to your computer; however, you may continue to use your computer. If a reboot is required, you will be prompted to reboot.

This process has been approved by core staff and implementation will begin May 14.

Ginger's Safety Tip of the Month

May is Electric Safety Month

If you have to use extension cords keep all cords out of traffic areas. Check the cords to make sure they are in good condition—not frayed or cracked. Never nail or staple cords to the wall or other objects. Do not place cords under carpets or rugs. Make sure cords are not overloaded. Only use extension cords temporarily; they are not intended as permanent wiring. Outlets: Check for outlets that have loose-fitting plugs, which can overheat and lead to fire. Make sure there are safety covers on all unused outlets that are accessible to children.

Plugs: Make sure your plugs fit your outlets - NEVER FORCE A PLUG INTO AN OUTLET IF IT DOESN'T FIT. Never remove the ground pin (the third prong) to make a three-prong fit a two-conductor outlet. Do not overload outlets with too many appliances.

Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters: GFCIs can help prevent electrocution. They should be used in any area where water and electricity may come into contact. When a GFCI senses current leakage in an electrical circuit, it assumes a ground fault has occurred. The power is quickly interrupted to help prevent serious injury from electrical shock. Water and Electricity Don't Mix. Call Physical Plant if needed. Don't leave plugged-in appliances where they might fall in contact with water. If a plugged-in appliance falls into water, NEVER reach in to pull it out—even if it's turned off. First turn off the power source at the panel board and then unplug the appliance. If you have an appliance that has gotten wet, don't use it until it has been checked by a qualified repair person.
Appliances: If an appliance repeatedly blows a fuse, trips a circuit breaker or if it has given you a shock, unplug it and have it repaired or replaced.

Entertainment/Computer Equipment: Check to see that the equipment is in good condition and working properly. Look for cracks or damage in wiring, plugs and connectors. Use a surge protector bearing the seal of a nationally recognized certification agency.

Halogen floor lamps operate at much higher temperatures than a standard incandescent light bulb. Never place a halogen floor lamp where it could come in contact with draperies, clothing or other combustible materials. Consider using cooler fluorescent floor lamps. The Safety Office does not recommend the use of halogen lamps. They are a fire hazard and use a lot of electricity.

TechTips – Helpful Hints for using ENMU Technology
(courtesy of Ron Obenhaus at ITS Computing)

Computing
Outlook series
- To open a multiple windows in Outlook.
• Click once to highlight the folder to be in the new window e.g. Inbox + Calendar, Contacts, Tasks, etc. Press the RIGHT mouse button, and Select “Open In New Window”
• Press ALT-F1 to remove the navigation pane (it’s already open in the INBOX window)
• Do this for each item. e.g. Calendar, Contacts.
• Using the mouse size and move the windows so each is slightly visible. This makes dragging and dropping to each window a breeze. When you drag and drop with the LEFT mouse button, you will always be asked to confirm details. e.g. date and time on appointments or contact information.
Note: It is not necessary to close each program when shutting down the computer. One reason not to: When you leave Outlook running and shut down the computer next time you start Outlook the windows return back to the same exact place and size you had when you setup.

PowerPoint series - Create Bitmap Images from PowerPoint
Want a quick way to send a single PowerPoint slide to someone? Try this: Convert the slide into a bitmap image. You can resize, crop and paste it into an e-mail message or a Word document. Here's how:
• Open the slide you want use as an image.
• On the View menu, click Notes Page. The slide will appear on the notes page as an image.
• Right-click the slide image then click Copy on the shortcut menu.
The image is now stored on your Clipboard, and you can paste it as a resizable object into any Office document.

DAT file version update – To check that your computer is up-to-date with the most current versions of virusscan software, locate the red and white shield with a red “M” by your system clock on the bottom right side of your screen and click on it with the right mouse button. Choose “VirusScan Enterprise” in the pull-down box. Then choose “About VirusScan Enterprise” in the pull-down box. There are two things to look for; one is the “Virus Definitions” which should be at 5024 and the other is the “Scan Engine” which should be at 5100. If either one is not displaying the above versions, click on the red “M” again with the right mouse button, then choose “Update Now” in the pull-down box. This will open a dialogue box displaying the status of the update process. Once complete, close the dialogue box and rerun the “About VirusScan Enterprise” option as described above. If the version is not at or greater than the one above, please contact the Helpdesk at 562.4357 for assistance.

Telephony- Muting a call:
This will allow you to hear the other party but they cannot hear your side of the conversation.
To activate: Press the “Mute” key.
To cancel: Press the “Mute” key again.

The self-study needs to be as accurate and valuable as possible.

Calendar Items Being Accepted – University Relations is accepting calendar items for the online 2006-2007 University calendar. Calendaring your department's events helps everyone to be aware of what's happening around the University, and it helps your department when scheduling dates for new events. Take advantage of the easy, online process by sending all your calendar requests to calendar@enmu.edu. Please direct questions to Betsy Chavez at betsy.chavez@enmu.edu or call 562.2134.

Travel Voucher Available on Intranet – The Travel Voucher is now available on the intranet as a PDF form. You will need to make a copy for your records before submitting the original to the Business Office.

The Requisition is also available on the intranet as a PDF form. A requisition number will automatically be assigned when the form is opened. You will need to keep a copy of the requisition before sending it to the Business Office. If you need to prepare a second requisition, use the back key on the browser to go back to the menu and select Requisition again. When you go back in, the form will have another number. For this reason it is not recommended to "view" the form.

To access the Travel Voucher and Requisition, go into the intranet [http://inside.enmu.edu/] or go to ENMU home page, click on Faculty and Staff]; click on Forms; click on Business Office and then click on either Travel Voucher or Requisition.

The Business Office will have a supply of Travel Vouchers and Requisitions until depleted.

Please contact the Business Office at 562.2611 if you have any questions.

Absence Report Form Available Online—The Report of Absence for Exempt Employees professional and at-will form is now available on the intranet under Personnel forms. If you have any questions, contact Personnel Services at 562.2115.

Please Help Save Energy—As many of you are aware, the University is experiencing major increases in utility costs. The electric bill through March is approximately $230,000 higher than last year. Please help to conserve electricity by shutting off lights in classrooms, dorm rooms, offices and other areas when not in use. Thank you.
