Flat Country Novel Experience for New Student Affairs Vice President
Story and photos by Erin Griffith
Communication Services

"It would be very arrogant of me, after a month, to come in and say, 'We will do these five things.’ I want to listen to the students."

judith haislett

Dr. Judith Haislett, the new vice president for Student Affairs, came from Black Hills State University. After 13 years in the black hills of South Dakota, she was ready for a change of scenery.

“I began work here on the 15th of August, but it isn’t really work. I had looked in the Chronicle of Higher Education and a few other professional job listings and saw the ad for Eastern. I went to the Web site and thought, ‘Gosh that looks wonderful.’ I really liked the international and Hispanic flavor of the area, so I applied here and was lucky enough to be invited,” Dr. Haislett said.

Originally from Wilmington, Del., and growing up in South Carolina, New Mexico has been a different experience.

Dr. Judith Haislett reported for duty on Aug. 15.

“I had never been to the Southwest; it’s beautiful. I love the birds and the openness. I had never lived anywhere flat before; even in South Carolina, I lived in the western part.”

While she heads up many different departments, such as residence life, student activities, the career center, financial aid, the registrar’s, TRiO, Upward Bound, health services and food services, for Dr. Haislett it is the students that make her job worthwhile.

“I’m here for the students. If I had to sum my job up in one sentence, that would be it. I want to make sure that they have access to all of the services and support available to succeed in the classroom and in their goals,” Dr. Haislett said.

Since her arrival at Eastern, she has been very impressed with the students. “They have a quality of gentleness I have not seen everywhere; they are fun loving and enjoy each other, but they are also serious about their education. They will leave this school and go out to make a difference in the world,” Dr. Haislett expounded.

She is also grateful to her colleagues for making her feel welcome and is delighted by her staff's dedication.

“The Student Affairs staff is there 100 percent; they are professional, caring and involved. I have not met anyone who does not genuinely care about doing what’s best for the students at Eastern; they reach out above and beyond and do what they can,” Dr. Haislett said.

Often joining her staff in attending Eastern events, she understands that it is important to know what students are thinking.

“My door is always open. I actually wish my office were in the CUB so that students would be around all the time, but they come in here a lot too and I love meeting them. I try to go to as many events as I can. It is fun to relax with students after hours and meet new people,” Dr. Haislett said.

student affairs office staffDr. Judith Haislett with her office staff: XXXX and Tammi Gardner, executive secretary for Student Affairs.

Despite the fact that she is settling in at her job, Dr. Haislett has not been able to settle into a home in Portales since her house in South Dakota has not sold.

“I am waiting for it to sell any day now. There are so many pretty homes here and I would like to be permanently settled so that I can have people over. In South Dakota my home was almost like a second student center; I miss that,” Dr. Haislett said wistfully.

The graduate of the University of Virginia loves social events; but there is one hobby that stands out.

“I have a daughter, Robin, who is my hobby. She’ll be out here this spring to do her graduate work. She is finishing her bachelor’s in mass communication at Black Hills. I also like to do quilting and any social event you can imagine I will enjoy,” Dr. Haislett said.

Regarding goals for the department, Dr. Haislett says she is not ready to set them yet.

“I’m still in the listening stages. It would be very arrogant of me, after a month, to come in and say, 'We will do these five things.’ I want to listen to the students. The people in Student Affairs listen carefully already; we have lots of ears to try and find out what students want and how we can improve.”

Eastern Opens New Language Lab
by Marc Schoder
Communication Services

Thanks to help from Capital Outlay Funds from the State of New Mexico, Eastern has opened a new language lab in Room 109 of the Jack Williamson Liberal Arts Building. “We received $225,000 that we were able to put toward the equipment and other needs for the lab,” said Dr. J. Vitelio Contreras, associate professor of Spanish.

Contreras said the lab is completely state-of-the-art and Eastern is very lucky to have such a new facility for students, as well as the community.

“One of the biggest provisos for this money is that we have an open-door policy to the community, which we are extremely happy to do,” he said.

Contreras said that the Clovis and Portales micro-plex needs this type of service.

Currently, a good portion of the students who are using the lab are exchange students from China.

For now, Spanish and English are the two languages the community and the students can fully practice in the lab, according to Dr. Contreras. For Spanish, software includes "Tell Me More" and "Rosetta Stone." For English, the program is called "Ellis."

Dr. Contreras said, “In the two weeks we have had this lab open, we have received a very good response.”

He noted that the instructor’s computer controls a lot of different functions.

“As an instructor, they are able to have complete control over the smart classroom environment,” he said.

For example, “Sanako” allows the instructor to see what students are doing on their screens without getting up from their desks.

“If a student is supposed to be working in a language program and they are not, the instructor has the ability to close what they are doing and even shut down the computer.”

Dr. Contreras said this control enriches the learning environment.

The lab caters to learning levels from beginning to to advanced. For more information, call Dr. Contreras at 505.562.2149.
