Flat Country Novel Experience for New Student Affairs Vice President
Story and photos by Erin Griffith
Communication Services

"It would be very arrogant of me, after a month, to come in and say, 'We will do these five things.’ I want to listen to the students."

judith haislett

Dr. Judith Haislett, the new vice president for Student Affairs, came from Black Hills State University. After 13 years in the black hills of South Dakota, she was ready for a change of scenery.

“I began work here on the 15th of August, but it isn’t really work. I had looked in the Chronicle of Higher Education and a few other professional job listings and saw the ad for Eastern. I went to the Web site and thought, ‘Gosh that looks wonderful.’ I really liked the international and Hispanic flavor of the area, so I applied here and was lucky enough to be invited,” Dr. Haislett said.

Originally from Wilmington, Del., and growing up in South Carolina, New Mexico has been a different experience.

“I had never been to the Southwest; it’s beautiful. I love the birds and the openness. I had never lived anywhere flat before; even in South Carolina, I lived in the western part.”

While she heads up many different departments, such as residence life, student activities, the career center, financial aid, the registrar’s, TRiO, Upward Bound, health services and food services, for Dr. Haislett it is the students that make her job worthwhile.

“I’m here for the students. If I had to sum my job up in one sentence, that would be it. I want to make sure that they have access to all of the services and support available to succeed in the classroom and in their goals,” Dr. Haislett said.

Since her arrival at Eastern, she has been very impressed with the students. “They have a quality of gentleness I have not seen everywhere; they are fun loving and enjoy each other, but they are also serious about their education. They will leave this school and go out to make a difference in the world,” Dr. Haislett expounded.

She is also grateful to her colleagues for making her feel welcome and is delighted by her staff's dedication.

“The Student Affairs staff is there 100 percent; they are professional, caring and involved. I have not met anyone who does not genuinely care about doing what’s best for the students at Eastern; they reach out above and beyond and do what they can,” Dr. Haislett said.

Often joining her staff in attending Eastern events, she understands that it is important to know what students are thinking.

“My door is always open. I actually wish my office were in the CUB so that students would be around all the time, but they come in here a lot too and I love meeting them. I try to go to as many events as I can. It is fun to relax with students after hours and meet new people,” Dr. Haislett said.

Despite the fact that she is settling in at her job, Dr. Haislett has not been able to settle into a home in Portales since her house in South Dakota has not sold.

“I am waiting for it to sell any day now. There are so many pretty homes here and I would like to be permanently settled so that I can have people over. In South Dakota my home was almost like a second student center; I miss that,” Dr. Haislett said wistfully.

The graduate of the University of Virginia loves social events; but there is one hobby that stands out.

“I have a daughter, Robin, who is my hobby. She’ll be out here this spring to do her graduate work. She is finishing her bachelor’s in mass communication at Black Hills. I also like to do quilting and any social event you can imagine I will enjoy,” Dr. Haislett said.

Regarding goals for the department, Dr. Haislett says she is not ready to set them yet.

“I’m still in the listening stages. It would be very arrogant of me, after a month, to come in and say, 'We will do these five things.’ I want to listen to the students. The people in Student Affairs listen carefully already; we have lots of ears to try and find out what students want and how we can improve.”

Eastern Opens New Language Lab
by Marc Schoder

Currently, a good portion of the students who use the lab are exchange students from China.

language lab Thanks to help from Capital Outlay Funds from the State of New Mexico, Eastern has opened a new language lab in Room 109 of the Jack Williamson Liberal Arts Building. “We received $225,000 that we were able to put toward the equipment and other needs for the lab,” said Dr. J. Vitelio Contreras, associate professor of Spanish.

Dr. Contreras said the lab is completely state-of-the-art and Eastern is very lucky to have such a new facility for students, as well as the community.

“One of the biggest provisos for this money is that we have an open-door policy to the community, which we are extremely happy to do,” he said.

Dr. Contreras said that the Clovis and Portales micro-plex needs this type of service.

Currently, a good portion of the students who use the lab are exchange students from China.

For now, Spanish and English are the two languages the community and the students can fully practice in the lab, according to Dr. Contreras. For Spanish, software includes "Tell Me More" and "Rosetta Stone." For English, the program is called "Ellis."

Dr. Contreras said, “In the two weeks we have had this lab open, we have received a very good response.”

language lab

He noted that the instructor’s computer controls a lot of different functions.

“As an instructor, they are able to have complete control over the smart classroom environment,” he said.

For example, “Sanako” allows the instructor to see what students are doing on their screens without getting up from their desks.

“If a student is supposed to be working in a language program and they are not, the instructor has the ability to close what they are doing and even shut down the computer.”

Dr. Contreras said this control enriches the learning environment.

The lab caters to learning levels from beginning to to advanced. For more information, call Dr. Contreras at 562.2149.

ENMU Junior Wins Constitution Day Essay Contest
by Erin Griffith
Communication Services

Junior Desiree Harbuck, a 1999 graduate of Portales High School and a communicative disorders major at ENMU, won a recent Constitution Day essay contest at Eastern about what the Constitution means to her.

Desiree, says, “I love to write, I love essays, I'm a bit competitive, but more than that, I really do love my country.  I think it's disheartening that being patriotic has become something of a stigma with our generation, while so many other countries are fiercely patriotic.  I truly believe in our country, not despite the way I personally feel about numerous recent political decisions, but because of them.

" I love that I have the right to be appalled, to be outspoken, and to have a soapbox all because of the foresight of the founding fathers. I genuinely feel that we will find the right answers, and I have perpetual hope in every vote.  I love the phrase...'pursuit of happiness', and I love that justice is blind.  I think that the Constitution embodies a great deal of the American spirit, and it is inspiring to read a document that was written so long ago and yet directly applies to my life,” Ms. Harbuck said.

The following is Ms. Harbuck's essay:

Freedom of Criticism

This past Sunday I had C-SPAN on and rather than the customary book talk I had expected, what aired instead were two televised rallies that had been recently held, both concerning America’s role in Iraq today.  The first rally was formed by patriotic Americans who were vehemently protesting the perpetuation of the war.  That is not to say that the rally members were protesting the soldiers themselves; there were impassioned pleas to bring out noble warriors home where the protesters insisted they belong.  One of our youngest, most controversial American poets, Michelle Malkin, performed at the rally demanding attention to the gathering with her words, her speech. 505 Area Code Officially Changed on October 7 –The 575 area code change in our region is now in effect. Numbers that are programmed into cellular telephones, fax machines, computer modems and other auto dialing systems will need to be changed to reflect the change. The grace period to be able to use the 505 and the 575 area codes interchangeably will end on Oct. 8, 2008.

Steve Blakeley, director of Printing Services, suggests that when individuals and departments run out of letterhead, business cards, forms, stationery, etc., they have new materials printed with the new area code. He reminds everyone that the old materials will be good until October of 2008.

Ginger's Safety Tip of the Month

OCTOBER IS NATIONAL FIRE SAFETY MONTH

Common Fire Hazards and Their Control

Heating Equipment - Improperly installed, operated or maintained furnaces and other heating equipment can lead to a fire.
* Equipment should be installed and serviced annually by a licensed technician.
* Combustible material should never be kept in furnace rooms.
* Temporary heating units should not generally be used in public buildings.

Electrical - Misused, damaged, improperly maintained or overloaded electrical equipment is a common cause of fire.
* Extension cords should only be used for temporary power to equipment that is being used by someone "now."
* Cords should never be left coiled up while plugged in. Inductive heating can be caused resulting in insulation damage.
* Circuit breakers should be turned off and on every six months to ensure they are functioning properly.

Mechanical Friction - Equipment that is not properly maintained or cleaned can lead to fires.
* Bearings on ventilation equipment and conveyors should be kept properly aligned and lubricated.
* Loaders and forklifts should be kept cleaned and free of combustible material.

Proximity Hazards - Hazards outside of buildings can expose them to the risk of fire.
* Fuel tanks near buildings should be installed to current codes and protected from vehicle collisions by a barricade.
* Dumpsters should be at least 30 feet from buildings.
* Weeds/brush/grass should be kept mowed back at least 30 feet from building.

Despite all the precautions, fires do happen so be prepared. Remember the Fire Defense Triad: 1. Detection/Notification - discovering the fire and alerting the fire department 2. Emergency Egress - well-marked safe ways to leave the building 3. Incipient Suppression - sprinkler systems, fire hoses and portable extinguishers.

My Name is Jonah
I am: 15 years old
I am in: 10th Grade
My favorite things to do: go to movies and hang out with my friends
My favorite foods: Mexican food like chile rellenos and posole

We are searching for an adoptive home for Jonah and her twin brother. Though we are looking for a home for both kids together, Jonah's brother is not comfortable with public recruitment at this time.

Jonah is an outgoing girl whose worker describes her as energetic and funny. She struggles in school but is currently at grade level in regular education. She needs a lot of support in reaching her academic potential. Jonah historically has had conflictual relationships with authority figures but is making gains in this area. She does well when given a lot of structure. Jonah tends to relate better to adults than to other children. She requires a loving, patient family with specific and clear rules and boundaries. In addition to her brother, Jonah has an older sister with whom she'd like to keep some level of contact. Please contact us for more information on this sib group. EZ
