We generated 44,522 semester credit hours compared to 44,710 last year. Given our demographic conditions, this is a minor miracle. We will have details in the coming weeks. According to RCCDC board member and Eastern New Mexico University finance professor David Hemley, the purpose of the job fair is to attract interested students that are seeking part-time employment. “This will allow students to have an opportunity to meet with a representative from a local business to discuss employment opportunities,” said Hemley. He added that the idea came from a meeting with David Shelton, the President/CEO of Western Dairy Transport, who came to speak with the group about employment needs with his company. According to a letter sent to possible participants at the employment fair, Steven Gamble, president of Eastern, confirmed in a meeting with Hemley and Portales City Manager Debi Lee that there was a potentially large number of students who could use part-time jobs. “We are under the belief that this job fair will provide at least a partial solution to some of the employment needs in Roosevelt County,” Hemley said. The church was very supportive, providing breakfast and lunch for the day of rehearsals. This is the first time that the ENMU Choirs have had their choral retreat at FUMC; the last two years having been hosted by First Baptist Church. It was actually a two-day event. The Choir rehearsed in the fellowship hall, sanctuary, and choir room of FUMC on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The retreat is an opportunity for University Singers and Chamber Singers to rehearse their joint repertoire together and for each member of the choirs to get to know each other more fully. It's a great social and musical learning time for all the ensemble members, according to Jason Pauk, choir director. The worship service was opened by Combined Choirs’ “Brethren We Have Met to Worship,” a processional prelude. Several hymns were sung by the congregation, including “To God Be the Glory”, “Because He Lives” and “I Surrender All.” ENMU Chamber Singers performed an offertory, “Cantate Domino.” The FUMC Chancel Choir and ENMU Choirs performed John Carter's "How Can I Keep From Singing" together during the service. There were as many singers in the choir loft as congregants in the sanctuary. Both pieces are going to be performed for ENMU Fall Concert, which will be titled "How Can I Keep from Singing." The choral benediction was performed by the Choir and the audience together, singing “The Lord Bless and Keep You.” The service was closed Kayla Paulk with a postlude “To God be the Glory.” This retreat marks the third year the ENMU Choirs have hosted choral retreat. Conductor Jason Paulk says, “I feel that it is important for the singers to be in a new environment – away from school – so that they can get to know each other better.” Dr. Paulk also mentioned that it was quite imperative that musicians understand various musical styles of worship. “I think it is highly beneficial for our singers to have the experience of "leading" in a Methodist worship service through performance of an anthem, special music during offertory, and hymn singing,” Mr. Paulk said, “This is learning that cannot be taught in the classroom, but only understood fully in its context during a worship service. The experience is not about proselytization (selling religion), but about musical education. "The Saturday retreat focuses on learning repertoire for the remainder of the fall semester. Sunday's performance was just a bonus activity in which we were able to sing with the FUMC Chancel Choir.” A fall concert of ENMU Choir will be presented on Thursday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. in Buchanan Hall. Accounting Club Reports on Past and Future Speakers – [report] Human Rights Film Series Presents 'The Wind that Shakes the Barley' – Illegal occupation, colonial repression, torture, civil war, mass violence, religious conflict, and resistance. Iraq in 2007? No, Ireland in the 1920s.
The following information was provided by Dr. Doug Morris: Ken Loach’s film won of the Palme d'Or at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival, considered the most prestigious film award in the world. This gripping drama by Ken Loach (Bread and Roses, Land and Freedom) is set during the early days of the Irish Republican Army, when British occupation politically radicalized many citizens and led to various forms of resistance to occupation, including violence. Cillian Murphy plays Damien, a medical student on his way to London when he witnesses atrocities committed by British occupation troops. Instead of becoming a doctor, he turns into a leading and respected figure in an IRA division led by his brother, Teddy (Padraic Delaney). The film provides some fascinating historical insight into the complexities of the Irish resistance movement, and Loach brilliantly and searingly conveys the profound emotional transition young men had to make to become saboteurs and killers in the face of colonial occupation, repression and brutality. Loach's realistic style is absolutely mesmerizing, with many scenes built around the dynamics of large groups: contentious meetings, torture sessions, battles, celebrations, and struggles over when and if violence can ever be justified. The film is also an investigation in the formation of belief systems and how historical conditions shape and often challenge fundamental beliefs and values. Tensions are explored as violence, in the course of struggling for freedom from occupation, drives various wedges between people who appear to be fighting for the same cause, even within families. The film very powerfully explores how externally imposed violence can produce internal violence among and between people who have known one another and lived together their entire lives, and it asks challenging questions about social and political responsibility for violence during periods of colonial occupation and aggression. While rooted in the 1920s, the film’s themes are as relevant as today’s headlines. Is this too heavy for me to lift and carry alone? After assessing the situation, you can determine if you're able to lift the object on your own or if you should ask for help. At work, contact your supervisor or another employee; at home, ask a friend, family member, or neighbor. Once you've determined that an object is safe for you to lift by yourself, keep the following lifting precautions in mind and make a habit to use them: *Use slow and smooth movements. Do not use hurried or jerky movements. *Keep your body facing the object while you lift it. Do not twist your back. *Keep the load close to your body. Do not reach out to lift or raise object above your head. *Never carry a load that blocks your vision. *Grip the object with your entire hand, rather than just your fingers. *Draw the object close to you, holding your elbows close to your body to keep the load and your body weight centered. *Let your legs do the work. Bend at the legs and push up from the waist. *Keep your back straight and tighten your stomach muscles. *Use dollies, carts, or other mechanical equipment whenever possible. *Point your feet in the direction you want to move. This will prevent you from twisting your body. *Set the load down by squatting while maintaining the natural curve of your spine. *The best level to lift an object is between your knees to your shoulders. If possible, store materials at knee level. *Reduce the weight and size of the load whenever this is an option. *Don't overdo it! If you have to strain to carry the load, it's too heavy! You can also reduce the risk of a back injury by keeping your back and abdominal muscles strong and flexible through exercise. Remember also to eat healthy, drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration, and get plenty of sleep. Avoid sleeping on your stomach; this can also cause back strain. This Safety Tip is brought to you by the National Safety Council. Student News Attention Fall 2007 graduates – Apply to graduate today. Your form may be faxed to us or dropped by our office.
