Graduate School Dean Retiring to Ruidoso Mountains
(Interview with Dr. Phillip Shelley, Dean of Graduate School)
by Wendel Sloan

phillip shelley

Where were you born, and what did your parents do.

I was born in Las Cruces, New Mexico. My mother was a public school teacher, artist, author, and, in general, a very free thinker.  My father was a retired Lt. Colonel who was a businessman when I was young and later he became an adult probation and parolee officer.  My adopted great-grandfather, grandfather, and my father all served in the horse cavalry and I have spent a large part of my life around the ponies.

What was your life like growing up, activities in school, brothers and sisters, etc.?

I grew up spending my time equally between Las Cruces and on a farm/ranch north of Las Cruces and south of Hatch  (this had been my grandfather's place and my uncles ran

it).  I loved the ranch life and my older cousin and I had intended totake over part of the place when we finished high school, but shortly after graduation my cousin was killed in an automobile accident and with his loss so went my chances of being a chile farmer/ livestock raiser.

My father had never finished high school as he was a war orphan from Serbia. When I decided to try college, he took the GRE and went to college with me. We had several classes together, but he was a much better student than I was.   I played football, basketball, ran track, swum competitively, and boxed as a young man.  I have an older sister and a younger brother who I spent much of my free time pestering.

Tell us about your own family?

I have been married to my lovely wife, Donna, for 39 years. She is from Albuquerque and her grandfather was the editor of the Albuquerque Journal for many years.  We have one son, Matt, who lives with his wife, Ashley, in Albuquerque.  My wife has worked for ENMU off and on over the past 20 years and my son went to ENMU for his first two year of college before transferring to NMSU.  He then went on to the University of Denver where he completed his master's degree in international and intercultural communications.  He has lived and worked in México and Costa Rica.  My family means the world to me and I feel very lucky to have found such a wonderful partner and to have raised such a great son.

Where did you get your degrees from, majors, etc.?

I received my bachelor's degree from NMSU, my master's from the University of Northern Colorado, and my Ph.D. from Washington Sate University – all three degrees in anthropology.  In 1973 I recevied a National Science Foundation Fellowship to study stone tool manufacturing with Don Crabtree of Twin Falls, Idaho. This was a wonderful experience.  Don was a very unassuming man who gave of his knowledge freely.  This started me on my first professional specialty: lithic or stone tool technology.  When I went on to WSU I concentrated on what is known as quaternary studies and developed my second specialty: geoarchaelogy.

Tell us about your hobbies?

I spend my leisure time hunting, fishing, hiking and gardening when the weather is nice, and when it isn't I watch sports, play cards, go to the horse races and read.

Tell us about your interests in sports, personal participation, etc.?

I am a football and boxing fanatic.  One of my life time dreams is to see a world championship boxing match live.  From time to time I play a little golf – badly.

What jobs have you held since graduating from college?

I have had a wide variety of jobs both before and after graduating from college. I worked selling sporting goods, in a hardware store, a lumber company, driving a delivery truck, as a veterinarian's assistant, as a groundskeeper, an archaeologist, a professor, an administrator, and as the New Mexico State Historic Preservation Officer.

Tell us about your jobs at Eastern, and the years you held them?  How did you feel about being dean of the Graduate School?

I came to ENMU in 1977 as a research associate with the Salmon Ruins project.  I was hired to be the director of the Lithics Laboratory.  That project was completed in the early 1980s and when I finished my Ph.D. in 1983, I became a tenure track faculty member here.

I have moved up through the ranks from assistant professor to full professor and have served as a department chair, director of the Honors Program, associate graduate dean, and graduate dean for the past 11 years.  The graduate dean's job is the best job on campus in my mind.  I have a wonderful staff that keeps us running and working with both fellow faculty and graduate students. It is a great reward in itself.

What do you think are Eastern’s strengths?

Several years ago, I served on a state committee and one of the other members of that committee was my ex-college dean from my student days at NMSU.  He was a very imposing individual to me when I was an undergraduate and I found it a real treat to serve on a committee with him.  After the first meeting of the group, I went over to re-introduce myself and I was quite surprised that he remembered me – probably for all the wrong reasons, but that is even a longer story.  As we were finishing catching up he turned to me and said, "ENMU is the finest public liberal arts university in New Mexico and possibly the Southwest. Please share this with your President."

Needless to say, I was very surprised and quite pleased and I shared his sentiments with President Frost.  I still think this is true and I am very proud to have been part of the institution for over 30 years.

What will you miss most about Eastern?

I will miss so many people here that it would take all the space you have for this story to name them. After 30 years I believe I know almost everyone on campus and will miss seeing them.

phillip shelley working in the field

From a professional standpoint, what are your passions?

My professional passion is in preserving, protecting and promoting the prehistoric and historic past of our beautiful state.  I have driven every paved road in the state and most of the dirt ones, and I have made a few of my own.

What are some of the things you find most fascinating about anthropology?

Anthropology provides a holistic scientific view of the world we live in through time and space.  We were the first academicians to embrace evolutionary thinking , cultural relativity and ethnocentrism.  Studying how people have managed to survive and thrive in all of their various ways, in lush and hostile environments, provides insights into our species that cannot be gained any other way.

What are your plans for retirement?

We plan to relocate to Ruidoso.  Both Donna and I love the mountains. The Ruidoso area has been the focus of my archaeological research for the past 15 or so years.  I am going to open up a consulting business and continue to do archaeology and historic preservation-related work.  I also want to finish a few projects that I have never found the time to complete and spend as much time as I can with my family and friends.

What are your thoughts about life in general, and what gives your life meaning?

The Big question: love gives life meaning in my opinion. Sharing with others is the greatest reward I know.   I believe individuals need to be responsible for their own actions and not blame someone else or something else for their failure or successes.  I have never found anything or anyone to be absolutely correct and I am not a big believer in the truth with a capital "T". Clearly, there are many truths and we all select the ones we wish to believe in.

Retiring Criminal Justice Prof Following Bluegrass Trail
Story and photo by Marc Schoder

melissa blevins

Dr. Melissa Blevins, professor of criminal justice, is getting ready to embark on the next phase of her life.

“Simply put, we are going to enjoy the rewards that have come from working hard and investing in ourselves,” she said.

She added that she and her husband, Ron, look forward to taking their time getting from point A to point B. “Stopping, studying, observing, feeling, reflecting on the marvelous landscapes and peoples in our travels,” she said.

Tthe husband and wife duo will take in Alaska sometime this year, followed by the Canadian Maritimes next year. Also planned are trips to Ireland, New Zealand., and all across the United States.

They are both big bluegrass fans, playing guitar and mandolin, respectively, and will follow a trail of bluegrass festivals.

"There is a bluegrass song called “Prisoner of the Highway.”  That describes Ron and me so well.  We love the open road, meeting people who have similar interests as we do and fine, fine music."

Dr. Blevins said that she will miss the interaction with students. “I have considered myself an advocate for students for positive curriculum and program change that would serve to develop their competencies to compete successfully within their career field,” she said. She also enjoyed advising students on career choices in the criminal justice system and offering support to non-traditional students as they struggled with balancing responsibilities of their families, work, and school.

“They were as much an inspiration to me as many said I was to them,” Dr. Blevins said.

As a result of here advising role, Delta Mu and the Criminal Justice Association raised a fairly substantial amount of money scholarships. “As a result of their hard work, there will be yearly criminal justice scholarships available for the next 8 years,” she said.

Dr. Blevins will also miss the colleagues who encouraged her efforts to move the criminal justice program online.

Although she does not want to think back, only forward, she did reflect on her accomplishments.

“If I am so fortunate to leave an impression at ENMU, I hope it will be one that embraces my core values of hard work, being open and honest with my colleagues, and being an advocate for student learning and success. A wonderful thing about being a teacher is that you do touch the lives of many students. It is a joy if I have positively contributed to another's life."

When asked if she is ready for retirement, she beams, "Let's get it on!"

At press time, there had been 355 applications for spring graduation.

“Dr. Armstrong has done a remarkable job,” said President Gamble.  “She took over a campus that was already good and made it even better.  She has kept ENMU-Roswell on the cutting edge of vocational and academic programs that serve the community, state and nation.  Dr. Armstrong has set an incredibly high standard for her successor.  We also greatly appreciate her willingness to stay on until the next provost is in place.”

Dr. Armstrong said, “I considered it a privilege to serve the citizens of Chaves County as Provost of ENMU-Roswell

and I appreciate the outstanding team of faculty, staff, and administrators who worked with me at the Roswell campus to carry on

the fine tradition of superior student learning, extraordinary customer service, and commitment to economic development,” said Dr. Armstrong. “I appreciate the support that Dr. Gamble has shown to our campus and to our community. I’m confident that my successor will continue the progress we’ve made and will lead the campus in exciting new directions for the benefit of our future students,” she said.

Since Dr. Armstrong became provost, enrollment reached new highs, surpassing the 4,200 mark in the fall of 2005. More than 150 online courses are now offered each semester. New partnerships have been forged with a number of institutions, like New Mexico Highlands University, New Mexico Military Institute, New Mexico State University, and the University of New Mexico.

The campus also partnered with other community and national entities to bring the International Law Enforcement Academy, New Mexico Youth Challenge, New Mexico MESA, and the Flight Safety Training Center to the Roswell campus. Armstrong also worked with Eastern New Mexico University to bring in additional instructional television courses and new degree programs to better serve Chaves County residents wanting to pursue bachelor’s and master’s degrees without leaving Roswell.

Communication Services

Eastern New Mexico University junior Erin Griffith will intern in the Washington press department of New Mexico Sen. Jeff Bingaman this summer.  The Albuquerque native is one of eight New Mexican interns working for the senator during her session from June 28 through Aug. 2.

“Since this internship is related to what I want to do as a career, I thought it would be an amazing opportunity to see if this type of work and environment is really compatible with my goals,” said Ms. Griffith.

She added that by being a double major in communication and political science, she hopes she knows the needs of a press office and has a firm understanding of the political questions.

Ms. Griffith said that she looks forward to seeing how Congress truly works and how the representative and constituent relationship unfolds.

“I will also be happy to see real public transportation and the free museums that the area has to offer,” she said.

ENMU Offers In-State Tuition Rates for Texas Nurses

All nurses with associate degrees who live with 135 miles of Eastern New Mexico University, or are taking six or fewer hours, can earn Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degrees by taking online courses from ENMU at New Mexico in-state tuition rates.

The BSN Completion Program is available to associate degree registered nurses and diploma RNs who take junior- and senior-level online courses from ENMU.

“It isn’t realistic these days to ask a nurse who has worked 50 hours a week to sit in a classroom another six hours every week.  So we transformed the program into a user-friendly online one, “said Dr. Leslie Paternoster, director of nursing.

The tuition waiver for Texas residents who live within 135 miles of ENMU means that nursing students will only pay $131.50 per credit hour.

Registered nurses may enroll at the beginning of any semester, summer, fall or spring.  The summer session begins June 2.

More information  about the degree can be found at www.enmu.edu/nursing, or by calling the nursing admissions office at 575.562.2833.

Heather  says, “ Overall, my education here at Eastern in the  art  department has been great ;, the teachers really help you show your style through your work, whether it be a print design or a wood sculpture. Everyone has a great attitude because we all get to do what we love everyday.”

Melanie Lucero, who is graduating with an emphasis in graphic design, will show work that ranges from postcards and brochures to logos and posters. Ginger's Safety Tip of the Month

Back Safety

Proper Lifting Techniques

1.  Get close to the object.
2.  Stand with a wide stance: put one foot forward and to the side of the object.
3.  Keep your back straight, push your buttocks out, and use your legs and hips to lower yourself down to the object.
4.  Move the load as close to you as possible.
5.  If the box has handles, grasp the handles firmly and go to step 9.
6.  Put the hand (that is on the same side of your body as the forward foot) on the side of the object furthest from you.
7.  Put the other hand on the side of the object closest to you.  Your hands should be on opposite corners of the object.
8.  Grasp the object firmly with both hands.
9.  Prepare for the lift: look forward.
10. Lift upwards following your head and shoulders.  Hold the load close to your body.  Lift by extending your legs with your back straight, your buttocks out, and breathe out as you lift.

This safety tip is brought to you by the Safety Office.  The next safety meeting will be on proper lifting and back safety on April 9 or 10.  For more information, contact the safety office at #2796.
