Seventy-eight administrators and staff members from all three campuses in Portales, Roswell, and Ruidoso recently received notification from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)/Emergency Management Institute of the successful completion of two introductory courses: National Incident Management System (NIMS) 100 and Incident Command System (ICS) 700. NIMS is a comprehensive, national approach to incident management that is applicable to all jurisdictional levels and across functional disciplines. NIMS is designed to apply to a full spectrum of potential incidents and hazard scenarios, regardless of size or complexity. NIMS is also intended to improve coordination and cooperation between public and private entities in a variety of domestic incident management activities. ICS is a standardized, on-scene, all-hazard incident management concept. ICS allows its users to adopt an integrated organizational structure to match the complexities and demands of single or multiple incidents without being hindered by jurisdictional boundaries. According to Attila Hertelendy, ENMU assistant professor of Health Care Management and director of the EMS Management Program, staff training will be provided on a continuing basis in order to build on these introductory courses. “Eastern is a leading institution in this endeavor,” said Hertelendy. “At a recent Emergency Preparedness Summit for Campus Executives that I attended at New Mexico Tech in Socorro, officials from the Department of Homeland Security commended us on our having so many trained in NIMS.” Student Research Conference Set for April 8 The 34th Annual Student Research Conference (SRC) is scheduled for Tuesday, April 8, from 1-3 p.m. in the College of Business. The associate professor of physics at Oakland University will speak on teleportation in “Jumper,” the book and movie, at 10 a.m. in the Sandia Room of the CUB. Dr. Rojo will discuss the scientific concepts behind the recent film that was based on the novel by author Steven Gould, this year’s Lectureship Guest of Honor. In the soon-to-be-released article on teleportation, Dr. Rojo focuses on the scientific concepts behind the premise of the film: among them, quantum mechanics, entanglement, elementary particles, and the conversion of matter into energy. As Dr. Rojo observes, because of the incredibly small scales of quantum teleportation experiments conducted since 1997, “With teleportation the situation is different: it is an improbability rather than an impossibility, insinuating a communicating pathway below the divide that separates science and fiction.” In addition to being a segue to author Steven Gould’s presentations throughout the day, Dr. Rojo's talk is a timely opportunity to link popular culture to current scientific topics. It gives participants the chance to explore both literature and science, as Gould’s protagonist does in his novel. The presentation is free and open to the public. 'Jumper' Author Steven Gould is Williamson Lectureship Guest on April 11 The annual Williamson Lectureship Luncheon is set for 11:45 a.m. on Friday, April 11 with special guest of honor Steven Gould and ENMU professor Christopher Stasheff.
