ENMU Employee Hosting Golf Tournament to Honor Mother
by Wendel Sloan
Communication Services

Justin Liles, systems operation manager for Information Technology Services at Eastern, is organizing a benefit golf tournament in memory of his mother on Saturday, Aug. 16, at the Tucumcari Municipal Golf Course.  The “Bonnie Liles Memorial Golf Tournament,” a four-person scramble, will begin with a luncheon at 11:30 a.m., followed by a shotgun start of 12:30 p.m.

The first 40 pre-paid players will receive commemorative t-shirts. The entry fee is $50 per player, and reservations are requested by Aug. 12.

Prizes will be awarded to the winning teams, as well as for closest to the pin and longest drive.  Mulligans (for taking shots over) will be available for $5 each, and gift bags will be provided.

Bonnie Liles was 49 when she passed away on Aug. 17, 1988, only months after being diagnosed with a brain tumor.  It was also her 31st wedding anniversary with her husband, John.  Justin Liles, also 49, is donating all profits from the tournament, scheduled almost exactly 20 years from the day his mother died, to the American Cancer Society.

“Mom was a very kind person.  She was widely known for her sewing ability," said Justin.  "She made lots of wedding dresses, prom dresses and cheerleader dresses.  She either sold the dresses at cost, or gave them away.  She even made my wife’s wedding dress and all of her bridesmaids’ dresses.”

According to Justin, his mother was the long-time postmaster of the now-defunct post office in the town of Bard, east of San Jon.  She lived most of her life in the Porter area, halfway between San Jon and Logan.

“The tournament is just my way of honoring what she meant to me and everyone who knew her,” said Justin.  “Cancer took her way too early, and I and my father would like to do our small part to help others not lose so many good years with their loved ones.”

Those who cannot play in the tournament but would like to donate may make checks payable (with "Bonnie Liles" in the memo section) to American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 1856, Clovis, NM 88101.

To sign up for the tournament, contact Rex Maddaford at the Tucumcari golf course at 575.461.1849, or Charlie Maciel at the Clovis Municipal Golf course at 575.769.7871.

For more information, call Justin Liles at 575.693.3809 or John Liles at 575.461.3680.

Golden Library Web Site Receives National Recognition
by Wendel Sloan
Communication Services

The Golden Library website has been selected as the "College Library Website of the Month" for August 2008 by the Communications Committee of Academic College and Research Libraries (ACRL).

According to Pete Gilbert, chair of the ACRL Communications Committee, "The College Libraries Section recognizes that a library's website, in addition to enhancing access to a library's resources and services, serves as a major means of communicating with users.

"The Communications Committee would like to extend our congratulations to all of those who have worked to build and maintain Eastern New Mexico University's outstanding site."

Once selected, the sites are listed on the College Libraries Section's site along with a brief summary outlining the reasons for their selection.  Gilbert said, "Beyond simple recognition, it is hoped that by highlighting these Web pages we are providing the library community with a convenient listing of sites that can be used by others to gain insights and inspiration to enhance their own library's online presence."

The "Site of the Month" page is at http://www.ala.org/ala/acrlbucket/cls/websiteofthemonth/.

According to Minh Tran, ENMU Webmaster, "The criteria for the award include ease of access, content, currency, design and navigation. The staff at the library are working really hard to keep the content of this site up-to-date and useful for our students."

Melveta Walker, Golden Library director, said that Lilah Gainey, public services librarian, has been instrumental in maintaining ENMU's award-winning site.

Employees Invited to Become Mentors to Sophomores – Many of our sophomores are faced with doubts which tend to contribute to the “Sophomore Slump”.  Fortunately, ENMU’s newly developed program, The Sophomore Experience:  Directions to Your Success has been designed to help students.  By focusing a series of workshops on self motivation, self responsibility for happiness and productivity, and offering tools for building a life direction, we will guide our students through life changing questions.

Four workshops will help them develop mission, passion, and vision for their future and for right now.  In between these workshops our students will be meeting with success mentors to ensure they are on the right path and assist them with any needs.  We are asking for your participation as one of these success mentors.  The workshops will take place every two weeks in the early evening on the following Wednesdays:  September 17, October 1, October 15, and October 29.  You are welcome to attend these workshops if you would like but your expertise as a mentor would be needed as follows:

September 10, Kick Off Picnic
September 18-30 one meeting any time in that period with your student(s)
October 2-14 one meeting any time in that period with your student(s)

Ginger's Safety Tip of the Month

"Your own personal safety depends on how you practice safety for others."

Thank you to Mike Nuckols for this safety tip!

DON'T SLOUCH!
While the term "good posture" might conjure up images of Southern debutantes carrying books on their heads, holding the head high and the shoulder back can do everyone some good.  At work good posture-whether you are standing or sitting - helps prevent discomfort and body fatigue.  Here's what you can do.
At your workstation remember to change positions frequently, and keep your body in what is called the neutral posture:
·         Body is relaxed, with arms hanging loosely at sides.
·         Wrists are neutral.
·         Shoulders are relaxed.
·         Elbows are close to the body.

Check that your working surfaces and seats are designed to eliminate the need to work in an awkward position for an extended period of time.  If you are exposed to any of the following circumstances for long periods at a time, and are uncomfortable, have your supervisor investigate the problem:

·         Bend your neck forward more than 15 degrees.
·         Lean forward or twist sideways.
·         Crouch over your work.
·         Work with arms above you head or out, away from your body.
·         Use awkward wrist positions, especially if work is repetitive or requires forceful movements.
