Monday Memo December 2, 2008

Employee Briefs

Dr. Mark Dal Porto, professor of music, was one of two invited guest composers to participate in the California State University, Bakersfield guest composer series for new concert band music.  While there, Dal Porto conducted a rehearsal with the CSUB Concert Band, presented a composition master class, gave a pre-concert lecture, and conducted the ensemble in a performance of his work titled Galactica for Symphonic Wind Ensemble on Nov. 15.  This same work was also performed by the California State University-Stanislaus Wind Ensemble (in Turlock, CA) on Oct. 31.

Ms. Autumn Donner, graduate assistant in the College of Business, and Dr. John Luhman, assistant professor of management, conducted an online survey of the technical needs of U.S. worker cooperatives.  A worker coop is a business where those who perform the work hold legal rights over profits and exercise control over the production process.  In the United States there are over 300 worker coops employing over 4,000 people: the majority in light manufacturing, retail and the service sector.  The respondents to the online survey believed that they were strong in most management techniques, but that they need assistance in the areas of Performance Appraisal and/or Progressive Discipline.  A summary of the findings was submitted last month to the United States Federation of Worker Cooperatives in San Francisco, California.

Dr. Michael F. Shaughnessy and Dr. Cecil R.  Reynolds have a paper accepted for publication in the
International Journal of Creativity and Problem Solving. Dr. Reynolds is professor of educational psychology, professor of neuroscience and Distinguished Research Scholar at Texas A&M.

Wendel Sloan, director of Media Relations, taught ENMU grad Scarlet Smith's fourth-graders in Crockett, Texas, how to write a newspaper story on Nov. 24. Sloan also toured the "King Tut and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs" exhibit at the Dallas Museum of Art on Nov. 26.
